Chapter Twelve

You can imagine that having a giant hole open up from beneath your feet would be the strangest thing that would happen throughout your day. I would have thought that. I think most people would have thought that. I know Drew definitely thought that, as he was in the same state of bewilderment as me once we ventured down the steps in to the underground place. Lola was stupefied of course, however, she was acting as if she was a child in an amusement park, wide eyes glittering at everything she saw. I wish I had that excitement, but I was too aware of our surroundings, and how unnatural it all seemed to be. It wasn't just an underground cave which is what I was expecting, that, I could have understood. If it was all concrete, dripping with mould and damp, that would have been fine with me. However, it was the total opposite.

As soon as we all took our last step down in to the underground, the opening which we came through suddenly closed, much quicker than what it had opened. We were in total darkness for a split second, before the world around us lit up like a Christmas tree. There was no inkling as to our being underground, as there did not seem to be a ceiling above us. There were bright, orange glowing lights strung around every post, every pillar and every building - which there were a lot of. The space we had walked in to was infinite. It was as if this was a world of it's own, a whole new continent which was entirely under ours. It looked like a carnival was in progress, as there were feather boas scattered in every window, Venetian masks littered around the floor and even pictures of clowns juggling brightly coloured balls hanging from every lamppost. I was in awe.

"Where... Where are we?" Lola managed to mutter, with her eager, emerald eyes still locked to a new sight every ten seconds.

"We are u-" Drew began, before I cut him off with a short and sharp,

"Don't. "

He stopped short of his blatantly obvious conclusion and pursed his lips as he took a long look around us, drinking in the beauty of the place.

"I don't know where we are exactly," I began, with as much confidence as I could muster. "Nonetheless, we did come here for a reason," I took a long breathe before continuing. "To find him."

"Hey, Ron," Drew began in his overly nice tone which he uses when he is telling me I am making a bad decision. Usually it is regarding men, or ordering three times as much food as I can actually eat from a takeaway. This time though, I thought it wise to let him continue with his scorning. "I know that guy creeped you out and was practically harassing you. Don't get me wrong, I would knock his lights out if I got half the chance-" With this, the spell of Lola was broken and she burst out laughing at Drew's suggestion. Drew was over 6ft and well built, but he was the most gentle giant ever known to man.

"You? Knock his lights out?" Lola spat out through her hysterics. I brushed it off and gave Lola a smile, acknowledging her very valid point, but wanting Drew to continue.

"Yes, as I was saying..." Drew said through gritted teeth. "I know this guy is weird and we came here for a purpose, but..." He paused briefly, like he was trying to chose the right words for his thoughts. "Doesn't this seem a little... Odd, to you? I mean, is this really worth it?" He finally got his words out and looked sort of guilty for saying that, even though I was sure he knew I was thinking the same.

"Listen guys," Lola began, very authoritatively. It came out of nowhere, a few seconds ago she was staring lovingly at some fairy lights, then she was giggling at Drew's dreadful choice of words and now, now she was acting as if she was a sergeant and we were her troops. Drew and I just looked at her with sceptical eyes. "We have come this far, I mean, look at this place!" With this, she flung her arms up high as if she was revealing the whole area to us for the first time. "We got the address, we came to said address, now we are here. It is a well lit area," she showed this through again, motioning towards the lights which mesmerised her prior, "there are no people here, so what could possibly go wrong? We just need to find this guy and once we do, we tell him to leave our Ronnie alone, grab a stick of that candy floss over there and go home." She finished her triumphant speech with a big grin and her chin up high, as if we simply could not argue her logic.

There was a moments silence as Drew and I debated our options. I knew Drew would not like the idea much more than me, however, I did agree that we had come this far, so may as well continue. There was something that Lola said that struck me as odd though, something which I hadn't quite noticed before she had mentioned it. There were no people here. None. It was like a city, every light was on, but there were no people in sight for as far as I could see, and thanks to the place being like a circus version of Blackpool illuminations, I could see a fair way. There were definitely houses amongst the business buildings; I could see chimneys with smoke coming out of them which surely meant that people did exist.

But where was everyone?
