Chapter Ten
"So..." Rory, Lola's genius brother began. "You're trying to track this number, because..?" He had only been at the restaurant with us for ten minutes, yet he had already managed to begin tracing the origin of the number on his laptop, and has begun asking questions to pass the time.
"It's really none of your business. I'm buying you food for this, shouldn't that be enough?" Lola sighed in frustration at the overly curious Rory, one of the only things they had in common. I elbowed Lola in the arm at her bluntness, gaining a roll of the eyes from Lola.
"It's just a guy at my work. He's been sending me weird messages and we just wanted to spook him into quitting it." I said to Rory, with a small smile playing on my lips. He knew me well enough to know I wasn't being entirely honest, but he accepted it and nodded silently, pursing his lips together to restrain from asking further questions.
I had already briefed Drew on what was going on once he arrived, and he has kept sternly quiet ever since. Any time that he would usually make a witty comment or joke, he has been utterly silent, just staring down at his glass with empty eyes, tapping the table with his fingers rhythmically. I knew he was feeling uncomfortable about this; I didn't blame him; it was pretty ridiculous what we were doing... But I agreed with Lola that we needed to find out what kind of guy we were dealing with.
Drew knew all of this, and being the genuine, caring guy that he was, he agreed to go along with us to make sure we were safe. He had reason to want to find out who the Ringmaster was too, especially after hearing how he came to see me the other night (that really infuriated him), but he felt the same unease around him as I did, so he knew that it wasn't going to be simple.
Rory put his hand thought his strawberry blonde hair, holding onto the short strands with his fingertips as he stared at the screen intently. The light shining from the screen illuminated his bright green eyes, as suddenly they grew wider as he sat up and clasped his hands together in success.
"Here we go guys, the address that thou seeks is..." Rory said tantalisingly, trying to build the suspense. I wanted to say he needn't bother with the dramatics, as we were all tense enough as it was. But he was enjoying this, and it was lovely to see him happy whilst helping us.
His eyes continued to stare at the screen, pausing before finishing his sentence.
"What is it?" I asked hastily. I could tell my eyes were burning a hole in him with how badly I was glaring at him, but he was too engulfed in the screen to notice.
"Okay, so... It's not quite an address as such. The number isn't associated with a house, or a single residence." He stated. "It seems to be linked with an industrial estate though. No unit numbers, but the entire estate. And you won't believe where it is!" He continued, as he began to sound excited at what he had uncovered.
"Oh come on, Dory, spit it out!" Lola piped in harshly towards her brother, using the nickname she always used when mocking him.
"Shut up, Doh-Doh!" Rory spat back bitterly. They loved each other dearly, but they bickered like an old married couple, calling each other names and using the lamest of insults you could think of. It was usually quite amusing watching them quarrel, but right now I had more important things to concentrate on.
"Alright you two, settle down." Drew said calmly, as he held a hand up in the air, like a father trying to tame his children.
"Sorry..." Both Lola and Rory said in unison, as they glared at each other, before giggling over what had just happened.
"Rory, where is the industrial estate?" I asked, beginning to lose my patience.
"It seems to be somewhere by that river that's just down the road. But I know there is no built up areas around there. None. So the only logical explanation would be that it's underground somewhere." He explained, as we all began to look to each other perplexed. There was a short silence as we all tried to take this in and make sense of it.
"Underground... As in... Like the underground tube stations?" Lola questioned hesitantly.
"That would be my best guess, dear sister, yes." Rory said deadpan, letting out a deep breath as he shut the lid of his laptop delicately.
The tension around the table suddenly grew thick enough that it was almost visible in the air.
I was half expecting this Ringmaster to be someone who lived nearby, just trying to have a bit of fun and toy with people. Or even someone who thought he was a clairvoyant, trying to make his career big with his eerie presence and attitude. But no. He just so happens to be living in an industrial estate, which just so happens to be underground near the river which I grew up swimming in. How does something like that go unnoticed?
I wiped a couple stray blonde hairs out of my face and continued to drag my hand across my cheek and rest my chin on my palm, thinking about how this was going to pan out.
"So, are we doing this, or..?" I said, letting my question linger in the atmosphere for anyone to answer. I knew it was stupid, but I kind of wanted to go still, even knowing how weird it seemed.
"Looks like we're going underground guys!" Lola belted out, shocking a few people who were scattered on tables around us by this point. She nodded in a silent attempt at an apology, then looked at Drew and I for confirmation.
I gave her a grin which she knew too well. Drew saw my face and sighed in defeat.
"Fine. But if he turn out to be a murderer, I'm not wasting my cross country skills. You guys will need to keep up." Drew said sarcastically.
"Great, I'll bring my oyster card, we might get a discount!" I joked as I nudged his arm, earning a genuine laugh from him.
The river wasn't far from the restaurant we were at. Nothing was too far away in this town, so we knew where we were going.
But we had no idea what we would be entering into once we got there.
