Chapter 12

"So anyway, did you hear about Angie last night, she was so making out with Aaron."

"I was not! We were having a conversation!"

            "That involved kissing?"

            "I was drunk, okay!"

"At least you got back to the dorm before curfew. I had to say at the Cheshire manor all night. They deduct final grade points when you stay out after curfew you know."

"Good thing I got back last night in one piece." I finally add in to the conversation. I had been sitting here with a bored expression on my face most of this morning. I added in a word or two whenever I thought that they would start to get suspicious if I didn't say something.

After last night most of the upper class was still in their dorms, trying to sleep off their hangovers. I was hanging out with the minority of the popular kids that hadn't gone to the party, or didn't get drunk at the party. There was me, Max, Lauren, and three other kids who hadn't gone last night. If you ask me, I wish I'd stayed at the dorms like these kids.

I was still tired to be honest. I could've stayed in the dorms like the rest of the Junior and Senior classes, but even gossip could turn out to be valuable information.

I snuggled a little closer to Max and tried to stop my eyes from drooping too far. After last night, we had an agreement, we would act like a couple in front of the others, but when we were alone we would just be friends. And I deceived a plan for whenever we had to go on dates. I would sneak in Simon and leave them alone whenever I was supposed to be with him.

"So, who do you think slept with who last night?" Angie asks. She was a sophomore, but she tried to hang out with us to give her more street cred. This question did pike my interest though. I wondered if anyone else saw Lilly and Jonathon.

"Oh, I definitely walked in on Max and Ashley last night. They were having a really good time." Lauren puts in. I assumed that she was either making this up, or she walked in on Simon and Max and was just too drunk to realize it. She was weird like that, she didn't really have hangovers.

"Ooh, do tell us all the details." Alex, a guy who stayed at the dorms because he had gotten detention with multiple teachers that day, tells Lauren.

"I was walking down the hall, and I opened the closet. They were getting it on in the closet!" Yep, she was making it up.

"No we weren't!" I add. I do not want people to believe that I did it in a closet.

"Anyway, who do you think Lilly was with last night? I heard that she didn't make it back in time for curfew." Lauren changed the topic, seeing that I was uncomfortable with the current topic of discussion. But she didn't know that this topic was something I was also very uncomfortable with.

"I'm goanna go back to my dorm room." I take an excuse to get out of the new conversation topic. I didn't feel comfortable telling anyone else but Julia what I had seen. I wouldn't want to learn from gossip and rumors that my boyfriend slept with one of my best friends.

I walked back up the stairs to the second floor. We'd been hanging around the first floor, wandering aimlessly around the empty halls. By this time of day most of the kids had gone out to town or were held up in their rooms. I heard Julia speaking on the phone, so I put my ear up to the door.

"Really? You were first place? That's amazing! No, I didn't know that. Amazing. You did! Okay, you can give the phone back to mom. Oh, she is? Okay. I'll talk to you later. Bye!" I heard the click of the end of the phone call. I was guessing that was her little sister, Bella.

I opened the door and saw her laid out on the bed. Her face was covered by her pink fluffy pillows. I silently closed the doors. I tiptoed over to her bed and sat next to her.

            "You okay?"

"Oh god!" She was startled and almost fell off the bed. I laughed at her, I guess sometimes I am too quiet for my own good.

"Sorry." I laugh more at her. She was giving me the unhappy pout. But I knew she was only joking around with me, like a real best friend would.

"Your like a cat or something! I can't see you coming! You could be, like, the best spy in the world!" Haha, if only you knew.

            "Haha." I nervously laugh.

"I just got a call from my little sister, Bella." She sits with her legs crossed, holding the fluffy pink pillow that had been covering her face earlier.

            "Really?"

"Yeah. She's a beauty pageant girl. She just finished her latest pageant winning first place. She's the best the best!"

            "Wow, that's cool."

"Yeah, I was one myself, you know. I won almost every pageant I was in. I stopped after some girl broke my arm in a fight over the crown at nationals. You can't win the talent portions with a broken arm. I miss it sometimes. It was always so much fun."

"I wish my parents had let me do that when I was little." I really didn't.

"I know right? It's so much fun." Actually it isn't. I had this thing about those stupid pageants. I hated the fact that those girls grew up thinking that they had to wear makeup and dress in slutty outfits to be pretty. Some of those girls even sleep in corsets so they can achieve a figure that they wouldn't get till puberty. Their parents put them on restricted diets and they never did real kid stuff. I know that I must be rambling beyond control, but it's true. I was glad that she had gotten out of the pageant game before she grew up, it would've ruined her view on the world even more greatly.

"Have you heard from your parents lately?" I change the subject. I see her face fall a little when I attempt to talk about her parents.

"They're busy with a trip to Rome for some new movie. I think they'll be back in time for thanksgiving break though." I watch as she talks about them. I can tell that she probably doesn't get to spend as much time with them as she wished. "They're always traveling for their different movies and gigs. But I'm sure they'll come back in time for me." I see her look down for a while. I would be sad too if my parents never really had any real connection to me. I bet she grew up being raised by the nanny.

"Yeah, I bet they will." I was starting to see that maybe she wasn't the all preppy spoiled brat that I thought she was. I guess we all had our own problems that we all had to face in our lives.

"Anyway, now that my hangover has pretty much cleared up, we should go out to town and visit that great little coffee shop that I told you about. We can invite the others too."

"Okay, let's go get them." I say. We head out of the dorm and down to where I last saw everyone else at.

By the time we get to where the other were, Lilly, Jonathon and some others were with them. Julia  was able to separate Lilly and Lauren from the crowd and we snuck out to the front lawn. We didn't want everyone to come with us.

"Ugh, last night was horrible." Lilly spits out. My eyes go wide and I turn to her, maybe she actually regrets sleeping with Jonathon and I won't have to tell Julia myself.

            "How so?" Lauren asks.

"I was so drunk, I couldn't even remember what I did. It was like It never happened." She exclaims. She turns to me and I know that she's lying straight to Julia's face. She wasn't drunk at all last night. She knew that I knew, didn't she?

"Awful." Julia sympathizes with her. If only she knew.

"How about you Ashley?" Lilly challenges me. She was seeing if I would come clean and tell Julia the truth. Me and her both new that if I told her know that she wouldn't believe me.

"Yeah, I can't remember much either." I say in defeat.

By now we had reached town and were walking into the crowded little coffee shop. I noticed that most of the booths were taken by other kid from school. We managed to find a nice little booth by the window, one that overlooked the rest of town. I wondered if their coffee would help me out of my putrid mood.

"What would you wonderful ladies like today?" the waiter asks us. I look up and I have to swallow my scream. It was Jake. Jake, the techie who I toured around the agency. Yeah, that Jake.

"The number four and two number sixes. Ashley?" Julia tells him their order while asking for mine.

"Umm, what do you recommend?" I ask Jake.

"The number one." He smirks at me. He must be the other agent that they sent in to help Jackson. Oh god, why did they have to send a techie in?

            "Okay, I'll have that."

I watch as he gives the orders to the counter lady and walks back into the hallway that was labeled staff only. I had to talk to him, now.

"Umm, excuse me for a second." I excuse myself from the table and fast walk over to the hallway. I make sure that no one can see me before I duck in the hall. I take a left and open the still swinging door that was labeled Storage.

"Awe, Samantha!" Jake hugs me from behind.

"I- please let me go." I say, seeing as I was in process of being turned into a human pancake. He lets me go and I take a huge breath of air.

"This is amazing, isn't it? They wanted me to go out to the field and help you. And plus, I get to keep the tips." He smiles and pulls out a dollar.

"Yeah, that's nice. Do you have anything to show me?" I ask,

"Oh, yeah!" He pulls me further into the room and to a table in the back with a box on it. It looked recently opened, and it had one of those fragile signs on it.

            "What is this?"

"Gadgets." He says, smiling like an idiot. " The agency let me make some for you, just in case of capture or if you need help."

"Okay, let's see them, now shall we?"

I open the box and smile like an idiot.
