25. Patrol Has It's Ups And Downs
(This one's a little shorter than other chapters, but I wanted to get you guys something, so you didn't think I was dead. I already got a chunk of the next chapter ready so the wait shouldn't be *reads date of last chapter* Fuck, sorry. Yeah it won't be that long.)
-Y/n’s POV-
After having a light breakfast Burnin told me where to meet the guy I was going on patrol with and told me a little bit about him. Apparently they started at Endeavor's agency at around the same time. Whenever they went on patrol in the same area he would always complain that no one would be paying attention to them, or how people would always stop them with what he called "petty little nobody problem". I can start to see why I've never heard of this guy before.
What did pique my interest was his quirk. Apparently his quirk lets him hear clearly through solid objects he puts his ear to. That sounds amazing for recon types of things like heros that work closely with the police but because that stuff doesn't pay very much he trained to throw objects like blunted axes and batons with accuracy to fight on the streets.
I went to the meeting spot in the plaza outside. I asked Burnin why not meet in the lobby and apparently Native doesn't like coming into the agency much apart from the room he uses. I sat down at a table outside a cafe and waited, but because I was in my hero costume I drew a small bit of attention. A few people who recognized me from the sports festival came up to me. I got up to talk to them and after about close to an hour a small crowd started forming. I noticed some blond girl in a brown outfit seemed to be looking at me from across the plaza, but before I could look at her someone grabbed my shoulder.
“You Golem?” The guy asked as I turned to look at him.
He was a few inches shorter than me and had an average build. He had slightly shaggy brown hair that went down to about his chin and a green and red headband with a feather in it. His suit was a brown leather material with darker brown gloves and a light fur cape with a pale yellow sash going around his waist. He looks like how Burnin told me, this must be Native so I nodded my head.
“Alright let’s go, you’re following me.” Native said as he started brushing the people away. “What was that about anyway?” He asked as he started walking to the station to go to our patrol route.
“Those people were asking me about the sports festival and U.A. in general.” I answered him as I waved to a little girl that asked to take a picture with me.
“I was ranked pretty high in my school's sports festival too so don’t worry, the hype doesn't last that long.” He said as we went to the line to Hosu. Burnin told me he didn’t go to one of the bigger hero schools. I don’t mean to sound elitist, but I doubt many even watched his school’s festival.
“By the way, did something come up? Burnin told me we were to meet at 9, it’s almost 10 now.” I said as I looked at my phone.
“None of your business, either way I’m here now.” He said with a bit of annoyance and continued walking.
We got to Hosu around 1 in the afternoon after a rather uneventful train ride. Native had said nothing to me the whole time and took a nap. I know I’m an intern, but this dude really drops the ball on being hero-like. As we were patrolling around the city it didn’t really seem like Native was following any kind of route, just going to the biggest crowd from the next and standing around waiting for something to happen.
As we were walking I pulled my phone out and to see how Izuku was doing with his internship with Grand Torino. He says that Gran Torino is really weird, but really powerful at the same time. As I’m about to reply I heard some shouting happening and looked to see a group of kids no older than early middle school age crowding around something. I stop walking and turn to Native.
“Should we go see what's going on over there?” I ask, gesturing at the kids. He looks where I’m pointing and just shrugs.
“Doesn’t look like there’s a villain over there so why bother?” As he says this, I just shake my head as I’ve had enough of this guy. As I started walking over he shouted after me. “Where do you think you’re going?!”
As I got to the kids I saw it was five boys who had circled around two slightly younger looking kids, sandwiching the two between them and the building. The boys were shouting insults and throwing trash at them. The boys themselves had no real outstanding features and looked completely average. The ones they were picking on however, were rather different. In the front of the pair looked like a rather lackey looking boy with short black hair, blood red skin, and soild bright yellow eyes. He had flat nubs on his forehead that were reminiscent of horns. If that wasn’t enough his right hand up the entire forearm looked like what looked like a large stone gauntlet that was the same color as his skin and many times larger than the rest of him that he was using to shield them from the thrown trash. He had on a beige button up shirt with brown slacks.
Behind him was a very pale skinned shorter girl crying and trying to hide behind his back. She had medium-length, messy, light blue hair and vivid orange eyes. One strand of hair was standing straight up against the rest of it similar to All Might. She had literal bird legs and talons instead of feet and feathered wings instead of arms that were the same color as her hair. Her wings looked like they were as big as she was tall. She was wearing jean shorts that went down to her knees and black tank top.
“Why can’t you freaks and your family leave our neighborhood already, no one wants to see you! I bet yours already left you for how weird you look!” One said as he pointed at the boy they were picking on.
“Yeah! And tell your bird brain mom to stay away from my dad! My mom keeps yelling at him cause of her!” As the boy threw that insult the red ones faced morphed with rage, but he stay in front on the girl.
As one of the boys picked up a rock to throw he brought it over his head, but when he went to throw it it wouldn’t move.
“What the hell!” He said as he struggled to move the rock in the air. Suddenly the rock flew towards me and the kid fell as he tried to hold on.
“Alright you little urchins that’s enough!” I said as I walked to the two and crouched down to eye level. “You alright kid?” He just nods and looks to the girl behind him.
“You alright, Papi?” He asks as the girl dries her eyes.
“I’m okay…” She says to him and looks up at me. “Thank yo-'' suddenly a glass bottle flies past me at the girl, but the boy pushes her out of the way and it nails him right in the head, shattering and making him fall over. “Kanta!” she yells and rushes to him.
“Hey!” I shout as I whip around to see the other boys running away and disappearing into the crowd. “*Sigh* Little bastards.” I mumble as I pull some bandage wrap I have in case the ones on my hands tear. I go back over to the boy to see the damage as he sits up. As I get close the girl blocks my path with her wings defensively. “Oh woah, calm down.” I hold up the bandages. “I just wanna help.”
Thankfully she slowly pulls her wing back and I get closer to take a look. Damn that bottle got him good and there’s some blood down the side of his head that’s hard to see as it’s almost the same color as his skin.
“What happened here?” Native finally decides to help. I saw he had an unopened bottle of water and snatched it from him. “Hey!” I use the water to wash most of the blood away and start wrapping his head.
“Okay, so this might need stitches so I’m gonna get your two to the nearest hospital. Okay?” They both just nod. I look to Native. “Where’s the closest one?”
“How should I know?!” He replies incredulously.
“Christ man, you’re supposed to be a damn pro!” I ridicule as I pull out my phone and look for the closest medical service. “There’s a clinic two blocks around the corner. Let’s go.” I say as I help the boy up. Damn he's heavy to the one side.
We get to the clinic and as they look over the boy, Kanta, the lady at the front desk asks the girl, Papi, for the number she can call for a parent or guardian. I decided to sit with Papi and wait at the clinic with the kids for their mother to arrive.
I asked what happened and she explained that they were boys from their neighborhood and started ganging up on them when they were out getting things for dinner as they’re mom usually works late.
After some time their mother, Iris, showed up. She didn't look much older than her late 20's. She was similar to Papi with claws and wings, but she had much more tanned skin and her hair and wings were a dark green. She had on an apron and a pink sweater with the sleeves trimmed down for her wings and a matching dress skirt.
"Thank you so much for helping my children!" She thanked Native, sounding both relieved and stressed at the same time.
"Just another day in this line of work ma'am. If you really wanna thank me though how about you let me take you out to dinn-"
"He wasn't the one who helped Kanta!" Papi cut Native off. "It was Mr. Big Guy!" She exclaimed, pointing at me behind Native with her claw.
"Really?" Her mother asked, receiving a nod from Papi. Iris walked up to me and brushed past Native, who was sputtering indignantly and left the room Kanta got his stitches in. "Thank you so much!" She bowed, Papi saw this and quickly followed her mother's lead.
"It was no problem really." I said with a nervous smile, waving off the praise. "I do have to ask you something. From what Papi was telling me, this kinda thing isn't rare is it." I worriedly asked.
"*sigh* No it's not…" She dejectedly answered. "Ever since Papi and I moved here 3 years ago the neighbors didn't exactly given us the warmest welcome, and it definitely didn't help their attitudes when we took in Kanta." She explained as she took a seat in the chair next to the examination table Kanta was sitting on. "At first I thought they just needed to get used to us, but…I later found out they steered clear of us because of our extreme mutant type quirks." Tears started forming in her eyes. "But it's never gotten to this point before!" As she cried Papi quickly jumped up and hugged her and Kanta looked down into his lap angrily. It was the same anger in his eyes when those boys were attacking them.
My heart went out to them. No one should be treated like that just because of their quirk. I silently walked up to Kanta and put my hand on his head.
"And even through all of that, you didn't fight back and protected Papi. That takes some real guts kid." I praised him with a smile. He could easily have messed those kids up with that arm of his.
As he looked up at me I used my quirk to copy his arm. His yellow eyes darted to it in awe. "And I gotta say this is pretty badass if you ask me." I said with a smirk. I reached out my fist towards him, he looked at it and then met it with his. "Don't let em get to ya. They're just jealous. Anyway I hope you guys have a better night, I have to get back on patrol with Native now." Which will be boring as hell probably. As I got out to the front room Native was put down his phone.
"About time, I just got a call from Endeavor, there's something going on downtown and wants me over there." He said as walked out of the clinic, I thanked the woman at the counter and followed behind him. "GPS says we take a shortcut through here." He said, leading us down an alley. As I followed him I couldn't shake the feeling of someone watching us as we entered.
