23. Hotheaded Training

The inside of the building was buzzing with activity. The first floor was a lobby of enormous proportions, clearly designed to make anyone visiting awestruck. Sidekicks and other staff were passing to and from the rows of elevators, and the intercom was crackling with announcements.

"Squad A prepare for deployment in four minutes..."

"We have a situation in the Miho shopping district, who's the closest to respond?"

"Where's Burnin? I've got a message for-"

I was overwhelmed as we walked into the heart of the lobby. Todoroki kept going, ignoring greetings and well-wishes as he marched past the crowd and rows of secretary desks towards the largest of the elevators.

I, on the other hand, wasn't able to make such a good time through the busy lobby, slowly navigating my bulk through the crowd while trying to avoid bumping into anyone. Just as I thought I was in the clear, I bumped into someone, knocking them down.

"Hey, watch where you're going, man! What's your ID?!" The sidekick yelled as he got up. He was shorter, even compared to someone of average height. He had on a blue jumpsuit with gold boots and gauntlets. Gold lines ran up the arms and legs of the suit connecting to three gold circles on his chest. His helmet was gold with a red star on his forehead.

"Uh, I don't work he -" I tried to say before he interrupted me.

"I'll have your head for this! Don't you know who I a-"

"Shut up, bucket head!" He was cut off by a female voice. "You just got your license a week ago; you have no weight built up yet to throw around!" As the woman walked up, I remember seeing her at a hero event years ago next to Endeavor. It was Burnin.

She had big red-orange eyes and pointy teeth. Her most distinguishable feature was her long, flaming yellowish-green hair with two bangs on each side and a wider bang going from the center of her forehead to the right.

She is wearing a light-gray double-breasted mini dress with orange and black lining and slits on both sides of the skirt. Her collar, belt, and wrist guards are black with a smaller orange line, and the silver buttons resemble flat-headed screws. She also wears a belt with a temperature gauge on the front and a fire extinguisher on the back, black knee-high socks, and short black boots.

"I mean come on, you can't just haze a new face just because you don't wanna be the new guy!" She chastised him.

"He made me drop my memos fo-"

"What's going on here?" Todoroki said standing next to me. I need to put a bell on this guy.

"Shoto!" Burnin shouted. "Haven't seen you around recently, congrats on second in the Sports Festival!"

"Hmm." That was all he replied before turning to me. "Let's go L/n. My father is waiting for us."

"I'm supposed to be there too, but I gotta get this one in order." She said pointing to "Bucket Head". I hope that isn't his actual hero name.

After the commotion, the bustling slowed and parted as I walked behind Todoroki. We came to an elevator that automatically slid open as we walked up. The walls were all glass, looking out onto the city. When the doors closed Todoroki pulled out an ID badge and held it up to a scanner on the button console. After he did the buttons lit up and a large red E flashed.

"The IDs let you access the elevator and different clearances let you go to different floors. You will most likely be issued one soon." Todoroki said as he pocketed the ID.

As we got to the top of the building I started to get a little nervous because of my track record with Endeavor. He is a professional, but still. I adjusted my costume case in my hands before the doors opened. We walked out to see a small lobby with a seating area to the left and a secretary desk next to the large set of very dark wood doors. The woman at the desk had bright blue eyes, a visor with two large blue-tinted lenses, and straight blonde hair with a brown patch stemming from her roots.

She wore a form-fitting royal blue suit with a wide opening in the chest area, with the space being taken up by a high-collared white dress shirt. The suit had a dark magenta zipper going down the middle, and both of its short sleeves have the agency logo.

"Good morning, Shoto. You're earlier than expected." She said without looking up from the computer she was typing away. Her voice was rather monotone but professional. "Ah and this must be Y/n L/n. A pleasure to meet you, my name is Clair Voyance. I am Endeavor's head secretary." She said as she turned to look at me, al the while she kept the same typing speed.

"Uh, likewise Ms. Clair." I said, a little weirded out by her display of dexterity on the keyboard. She gave a small smile before pressing a button on her earpiece.

"Endeavor, your son and Y/n L/n are here." She waited for a response for a moment. "He's ready for you." Todoroki just walked towards the doors and pushed them open effortlessly. Either he is stronger than I thought or those doors are crazy balanced. As we walked in I saw Endeavor sitting at a large wooden desk, everything wooden in here is made of the same dark wood as the doors, the office itself takes up the rest of this floor I'm guessing by the size of it.

"There you are. We will begin immediately. You will be staying with us for the rest of the week: all necessary accommodations have been taken care of." Endeavor said, before leaning forward and placing his hands on the desk, causing a slight creak. "While here, everything you say and do acts as a reflection upon the Agency and myself. While at UA you may have gotten used to a more relaxed atmosphere, but here we expect discipline, rigor, and excellence in all aspects. You will conduct yourself appropriately. Is that clear?" I have a feeling that was more directed at me than his son.

"Crystal."

"The correct response is 'Yes, Sir.' Do not forget that." He corrected me. And I'm already regretting this decision.

"...Yes, Sir."

"Shoto, you will go with me on patrol for the time being. Burnin' will see how well L/has actually been trained." Endeavor said as he stood up from the desk and walked towards the elevator. "Wait here for Burnin. Shoto follow me." Todoroki waited as Endeavor passed him and followed. As the elevator closed I took a seat on the couch in the foyer by the elevators as I waited. I was about to take my phone out , but the other elevator opened and Burnin walked out before I could.

"Hey! Where'd Endeavor go?!" Burnin asked, seeing the office empty.

"As soon as Shoto showed up Endeavor left with him on patrol." Clair Voyance said not looking up from her computer.

"Well why was I supposed to be in there when they came in if they were just leaving?" Burnin complained.

"Because Endeavor wants you to evaluate him." Clair Voyance said, pointing a pencil at me. Burnin quickly turned around and as soon as she saw me she had a giant grin on her face. I didn't like the look and I soon found out for a good reason.

"I get to break in the newbie. Perfect."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Soon Burnin took me down to one of the training gyms that they had in the building. Burnin said we were going to the biggest one that was below the building. She pointed me to the guy's changing room and had me change into my hero costume so we could get right to it. As I put on my fixed custom I immediately noticed the fabric feels much more resilient than at the battle trials, maybe it'll hold up now. After the thing with Todoroki's ice I had them make a pair of matching shoes and then I had to deal with Izuku's smug face because he recommended them to begin with. As I came out of the changing room I took in the training room, and suffice to say I was impressed. The ceiling was pretty high up, looking like this room took up at least two stories of the building itself. Half of the room was filled with equipment like the advanced stuff at the school, I could see a lot of side kicks using the equipment. The other half looked like an indoor track field. In the middle of the field in a patch of faux turf, Burnin was standing to the side by a set of benches. She was watching something on a tablet. As I walked up it looked like a highlight reel of me from the Festival and the battle trials, I'm guessing the school provided it for Endeavor.
"Ah, okay kid, you better get ready! We gotta see if you're up to snuff!" She said as she put the tablet down.
"So what are you looking for anyway?" I asked as I put my things on the ground next to the bench. "All Endeavor said was to see if I've quote 'actually been trai-" my question was cut off as I turned my head to Burnin, only to see a bright green fireball hit me right in the face. It had more force behind it than the heat of a flame. It felt like someone punched me with the opening of an oven. As I recovered from the hit another one hit me in the side, on my scar, knocking me down and let out a hiss of pain.
"We're starting with speed!" Burnin said as she reached into her hair and pulled out another fireball and threw it. I had enough time to roll to the side to not get hit. "All you gotta do is hit me one time for every five I land on you! You're starting at two already, so three more hits from me and we add another!" She instructed.
"A little warning would have been nice..." I growled as I stood up.
"No warning! No hesitation! You think you get that luxury out there against some criminal!" Burnin yelled passionately as she threw more. I started running to the side and circling her. One of them curved and hit my leg.
"Two more!"
She isn't leaving much of an opening here. Okay, think, she's a ranged fighter with an open field. I need to close the distance fast. I stopped and brought up a wall of rock to give me cover for a second.
"No! No! No!" Burnin yelled. "No stopping! You need to think and react NOW!" She yelled, sounding very close now. I didn't realize until a large green light from above me lit up that she was standing on my barricade. She had a large fireball held in both hands and brought it down as I looked up, it destroyed the barricade and threw me a few feet away. As the dust settled I coughed as I got up and saw her shaking her head at me. "If this was out there, you'd be dead! You need to treat this training seriously, kid!"
"I am taking this seriously, and last I checked I did pretty well against some actual villains not too long ago." I said as I walked over to the bench and sat for a second.
"Oh yeah, when you were injured so badly they had to do emergency surgery on you cause you bit off more than you could chew?" I looked up at her in shock, that wasn't public knowledge. "Yeah I know about it, the agency is partnered with the school. So most info can be requested, stuff like files on their students that we take in." She said as she pulled a smaller device out of her coat. "Let's see here, Y/n L/n, age 17. Quirk: Geogeneration, type: Emitter. Son of now-deceased pro, Terra Nova, but raised by his aunt and legal guardian, Ryuko Tsuchikawa after the death of his father, Mirai L/n." Burnin read off.
"Hey!" I got up because she's reading into some pretty personal stuff now out loud.
"Medical History: After watching the death of his father and the incident of his quirk manifesting, was diagnosed with childhood psychosis at the age of 6."
"That's enough!" I tried to grab the device from her, but she dodged out of the way and in the same motion she threw a fireball right in my face.
"After diagnosis, heavily medicated until age of 8 because mental instability caused quirk to cause localized fault line activity."
"I said-!" Stone climbed my arm as I swung at her, but again she jumped back. "-stop!" This time however on the downswing of my arm the stone shot out in a straight line at her. I grabbed the device and crushed it, to both mine and Burnin's shock. Just as quickly as it happened the extension to the appendage crumbled and hit the ground.
"That! That's what we're talking about! Instinct and quick action!" She said with a smile of pride. "Sorry about that by the way, Endeavor left a memo to do that if you weren't kicking it into gear fast enough."
"Bring up that stuff? Yeah sounds like him..." I grumbled. "Why the hell is all of that in my record anyway?" I asked as I grabbed my towel.
"Some of that stuff is important to hero work believe it or not." Burnin said as she sat stood in front of me. "Sometimes past traumas prevent you from moving forward and focusing. And losing focus out there will cost lives."
"What are you, a shrink? I thought you were a sidekick." I spat, still a little annoyed.
"Associates in psychology actually." She said with a cocky grin. "Knowing how to treat trauma is a good way to help prevent it too. Remember that!" She said with a wink. "Okay now that that got out of the way onto the next thing the boss left to do!" She said as she pulled out another device.
"How many of those things do you have?" I asked in a deadpan tone.
"As many as I want! The agency covers these things! Okay, says here to train you on your quirk techniques. Is it true that your quirk is the same as your mom's?" Burnin asked, pulling something out of her belt pocket.
"As far as I've been told it's pretty much a carbon copy. Why?"
"Good, so the notes Endeavor left are accurate. Okay well that thing you did against that acid girl with that shield, let me ask, why didn't it melt too?" She asked, but it sounded like she knew the answer already.
"Because it wasn't the normal stone I make, I changed as it came out as a form of soapstone." I answered.
"Well what else can you make?"
"I don't really know, so far it's that soapstone. And maybe the crystal too when my adrenaline gets going, but that's not as sturdy as my stone." I thought about it, as I showed it by covering one hand stone and the other with soapstone mixed in. "I haven't really had time to test out anything else yet. I only really had the soapstone in my head because that's what most lab countertops are made of in schools and hospitals. I thought about something that would take the acid and it came out. It was really a hail-mary."
"Okay well this is what's next." Burnin said as she held up a jet black stone that fit in the palm of her hand and tossed it to me. "That right there is obsidian, a type of volcanic glass. It forms when real thick lava is rapidly cooled."
"Okaaay? And what am I supposed to do with it?" I asked as I turned it around in my hand.
"Make some." She said like it was obvious.
"I'm sorry what?" I look up at her and see her usual smirk.
"That's today's training!" She declared loudly. "You're going to be training the part of your quirk that lets you make different types until it's second nature!"
"I'm not even totally sure how I did it the first time, but alright..." I said as I turned my focus to the rock in my hand.
I spent some time turning the material over in my hand multiple times to get a better feel for it. I really only knew the composition of soapstone, not very much else so it wasn't perfect when I made it before so it only took the acid and then broke after I threw it. This stone was shaped like a triangular prism, curiously it seemed incredibly sharp at every edge. Ow. Just cut myself. It looks like it has layers on the flat sides of it. Like it was poured into a mold and set. As I was observing it in one hand I started trying to make it in the other and focused on the shifting feeling I had when I changed it before. The stone that came to be in my hand started as a small pebble. I gotta think of what this stuff is made of. I put the obsidian down and tried to pull out my phone only to realize I left it in my school clothes.
"Hey can those things look up stuff online?" I ask Burnin and she nods. "Mind if I use one?" Then she just threw the thing at me without a second thought and pulled out another one...I'm just gonna ignore that.
So obsidian is made of about 70 percent or more non-crystallized silica dioxide or quarts. Okay my regular crystals are made of the same stuff. Then it says the rest of it is igneous material, just like my regular stone. So I should be able to mix my stone and crystal to make something like obsidian. This also says it is chemically similar to granite and rhyolite, which also were originally molten. Granite is more or less limestone that formed deeper underground. So I need to add pressure too? Jeez this is a lot more than I thought. I put the PDA down and focused on making this.
If I can make crystals when my adrenaline is going then I should be able to just do it, right? Maybe if I think of things that made me mad? Okay, Endeavor insulting my parents, yep. Uh, that time in the entrance exam when Uraraka was in danger...The Nomu thing from the USJ. As I thought of that experience a crystal shard quickly jetted out from the stone towards my face, cutting me above the eye and making me drop it.
"Fuck!" I cursed as my hand shot up to wipe my forehead. "Shit...Hey you got any bandages?" I called out toward Burnin.
"What the hell was that kid?" She asked as she rooted through her bag and walked over.
"I lost focus..." I said as Burnin crouched down next to me and looked at my head. I looked at my hand as I started making what looked like scales of crystal down my hand. When they got to my fingers they came to points like claws except on my thumb. That's cool I guess.
"Well good news it looks like you're making progress. Bad news you may need stitches." She said as she stood up. "How sharp are these things?" she asked as she picked the broken shard.
"I think I'm on the right track." I said as I went back to it.
I just gotta do that again, but mix it with stone. I put my hands in front of me a few inches apart and focused on the feeling again. A small stone ball started forming in between my hands. It ended up looking like a golf ball made of stone with some crystal pointing out of it. I kept at this for like 2 more hours before I decided to try and maybe add pressure, but when I did once it reached a certain size it would start to spin in my hand and fly in a random direction. When one of them nailed Burnin in the head she called it for today and we left the gym.
Burnin took me to their personal infirmary and she was right. I needed a small stitch, the nurse said it should be fine to take out by the end of the week. Burnin then gave me a tour of the agency and showed me where to get food, definitely not as good as the school's, and where I was sleeping. I was being given a room for the week at the agency. The rooms were apparently a standard for sidekicks that chose to stay here like an apartment. They are in a connected building off the main lobby.
The room was very stark. The bed took a solid forth of the floor space, but it was larger so it has that. The walls are blank white with lights built into them. There was a bathroom too. It was just as barren. Apart from the bed it looked like an expensive hotel room for someone half the normal size, but it was free for me.
"Alright kid, we grab breakfast at 9 am and then we get back to training!" She said as I walked in.
"9 am? I'm not complaining, but I would've thought you were the kind of person to get up with the sun." I said as I put my bag down on the bed.
"Anyone up that early is a terrible sleeper and a liar if they say otherwise." She grumbled under her breath. "Get some rest kid. You'll need it.~" I said as the door slid closed.
Why did I not like the way she said that?
Nevermind, I'm too tired.
After I took a shower and flopped into the bed I grabbed my phone and decided to text Mina because she asked me too at the station
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey, how'd your day go over there?
Uugh! I thought this would be more fun! All this
guy does is sit and watch video of the real action!
That bad huh?
I mean we did train a little with controlling
acid, but I could focus because this guy's acid
or whatever comes out of his mouth!
What really?
Gross
I know right!
Anyway, what about you?
Eeh it's not as bad as I thought it'd be.
Endeavor pawned me off to his sidekick
Burnin before doing whatever
with Todoroki. We did some training.
Ohh sounds more fun then
this guy.
Anything else happen?
I cut myself in the face with my own
crystal like a dumbass.
Oh no! Not the cute face!
What?
Don't change the subject!
Promise me you will try to be
more careful! You seem to
end up with bandages everytime
I look away.
I promise to try.
Good. Now get some sleep dummy.
You too
Good night
Good night
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I put my phone on the charger and rolled over. She said my face is cute. She may need glasses.
