21. Pick A Name, Any Name
(Just a heads up, I'm no longer comfortable having 21 students in 1-A so with a (not so) heavy heart I am removing Koda. Let's face it folks, he did nothing substantial.)
-Y/n's POV-
The next day I slept in bed all day just like I was going to before and later I got up and joined Izuku and his mom for dinner. Mrs. Midoriya was hounding me because I was looking much happier than I was a few days ago. I thought back and pushed down a blush after thinking about all the effort Mina went through for me and told Mrs. Midoriya I had no idea what she was talking about. I was up a little later than I should have been thinking about what happened before I finally passed out.
The next day we had to go back to school and I was about to call in sick if Izuku didn't let himself in and wake me up. Bastard. It was pouring rain out as we left so I slipped a pullover hoodie on, I hate carrying an umbrella. As we got to the station I saw some highlights from the festival playing on the news screens. One of them was of me whipping around Bakugo after I went Juggernaut on him. I cringed as I saw the slams, I may have gotten carried away.
As we were on the train I was trying not to fall asleep standing up and Izuku was looking at his phone.
"Excuse me...Excuse me." Someone was whispering. "Midoriya from the hero class!" They said a little louder, getting multiple people's attention. Izuku turned to see a guy in a suit give him a thumbs up and praise for his performance at the sports festival. As the other commuters gave their praise, I put up my hood before I was recognized too and turned away. I did not need that kind of attention this early in the morning. As the train stopped Izuku scrambled out of the car, so I slipped out to catch up.
"W-Why didn't you help me back there?!" He stuttered out as he was trying to calm down.
"Too tired..." I groaned out.
"That's not really an excuse...." He said with a sigh. "It's still morning and I'm already tired now from that, too."
"L/n! Midoriya! Good morning!" I heard a familiar call out as they ran up behind us.
"Uugh, speaking of tiring encounters." I said as Iida was jogging in place next to me. He was wearing a bright green poncho and rain boots.
"Why are you two walking so slow, you are going to be late!" He said as he took off again.
"B-But we still have five minutes before the first bell?!" Izuku worriedly asked as he started running with Iida. I definitely wasn't running to them.
"U.A. students should always arrive ten minutes early!" Iida said as they got farther away. Fuck that. I'm not moving any fast then this.
As I finally got to the building I slipped my warm hoodie off and threw it over my shoulder. Iida and Izuku had already gone to the classroom by the time I caught up.
I came into the class through the door towards the back because it's closer to my seat. As I came into the room everyone was talking about being noticed on the street after all of the news stations were playing reels. I heard Sero say something about some elementary schoolers trying to cheer him up and I chuckled to myself as I put my head on my desk. Iida immediately turned to me the second I sat down.
"L/n, do you know how close you are to being late!?" he asked.
"Aizawa isn't here yet, so I'm fine." I grumbled.
"Actually he is." Tokoyami said to my left, as he pointed to the yellow sleeping bag behind the teacher's desk.
"Is he awake?" I asked, peeking up from my desk.
"I don't believe so, no." Iida answered.
"Then there you have it." I waved off as I put my head back down. Sadly the bell rang as I did so, waking up Aizawa too.
"Morning." He said as he kicked off his sleeping bag.
"Mr. Aizawa, your bandages are gone. I'm glad." Tsu commented as he walked in. The bandages are indeed gone, but there is a nasty scar under his left eye.
"The old lady went overboard with her treatment." He said as he scratched his face. "More importantly, we're having a special hero informatics class today." Oh come on, really?! A quiz after a small break AND when I'm exhausted. Juuust great. "Code names. You'll be coming up with hero names." Everyone got excited about this, I even woke up a little more. I've been waiting for this! Aizawa activated his quirk and the class quickly calmed down. "This is related to the pro hero draft picks I mentioned the other day. The drafts begin in earnest in the second and third years, after students have gained experience and can become immediate assets to the pros. In other words, for them to extend offers to first years like you shows that they are interested in your future potential. These offers have often been cancelled if that interest dies down by graduation."
"Adults are so selfish!" Mineta said as he hit his desk.
"So we'll have to prove ourselves once we get picked, huh?" Hagakure asked Aizawa.
"Correct. Also here is the total for those with offers." Aizawa said as he clicked a remote and the totals started displaying on the blackboard that is also a screen? I don't even know anymore. I think UA just likes to flex its tech. As the chart filled in I grabbed my water bottle out of my bag and took a drink from it.
Class A No. of Offers
Shoto Todoroki - 4,123
Katsuki Bakugou - 3,556
Y/n L/n - 1,867
Fumikage Tokoyami - 360
Tenya Iida - 301
Denki Kaminari - 272
Momo Yaoyorozu - 108
Eijiro Kirishima - 68
Ochako Uraraka - 20
Hanta Sero - 14
As I read the list I quickly started choking on my water as I saw the amount of offers I got. What the fuck?! That has to be a mistake!
"In other years, it's been more spread out, but all eyes were on these three this year. So blame them." Aizawa said as he pointed his thumb at the board.
"Gah, there's such a big difference!" Kaminari said as he threw his head back in exasperation.
"Those pros don't know a good thing when they see one!" Aoyama said in annoyance.
"Todoroki's first, and Bakugo's second...?" Jiro questioned.
"Yeah, It's the opposite of their placement in the sports festival." Kirishima commented. "The only one towards the top that's in the same place is L/n."
"Why the hell did I get so many offers?! I got my ass handed to me in my last fight..." I said out loud to no one in particular.
"You out-classed all of your opponents until then and demonstrated aptitude with your quirk at almost every moment." Tokoyami spoke up.
"...Why is it you don't say much, but when you do it sounds really smart and or edgy?" I asked him with a deadpan look on my face. My only answer was a quick shrug of his shoulders.
"Wow, we got offers!" Uraraka cheered as she was shaking Iida by his shoulders.
"Keeping these results in mind, whether or not anyone asked for you, you will be participating in internships with pros. At USJ, you already got to experience combat with real villains--" As Aizawa said that my hand traced over the scar on my side. "--but it will be meaningful training for you to see pros at work firsthand."
"So that explains the hero names!" Sato realized.
"Things are suddenly getting a lot more fun!" Uraraka commented.
"Please don't say that bad things happen around here when someone calls something fun." I turned to her and said.
"Well, those hero names are still temporary, but if you're not serious about it--" Aizawa was saying as the door opened.
"--You'll have hell to pay later!" Nemuri said as she walked in. I turned to Uraraka with a glare and whispered.
"This is your fault." To which she rubbed the back of her head with a nervous smile.
"A lot of hero names used by students become recognized by society, and they end up becoming professional hero names!" She said as she walked in with her hands above her head, she knows damn well what she's doing. Most of the guys in the class turned their heads and watched her strut in.
"Well, that's how it is." Aizawa commented. "So Midnight will be making sure your names are okay. I can't do stuff like that." He said as he grabbed his sleeping bag. "When you have your hero name you get a more concrete image of what you want to be in the future, and you can get closer to it. This is what it means when they say, 'Names and natures do often agree.' Like 'All Might' for example." Aizawa handed out stacks of small white boards to pass back and then curled up in the corner in his sleeping bag.
As I got mine I started giving it more thought. Should I use my mom's old name, Terra Nova, would people even make the connection either? No, I don't want to be compared to someone I never even met. Avalanche? No. Rockslide? Nah. Geo-Force? Definitely not. As I was trying to think of ideas I remembered something my father told me years ago.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was back in our old apartment, my father was putting me to bed before he went to his office to work all night to make another deadline. As he turned on the duck shaped night light I spoke up.
"Daaad~ I'm not tired. I wanna help you work."
"Thanks, but you're young so you need to get your sleep to grow big and strong, just like pops here!" He said as he flexed his rather average muscles.
"I am big and strong!" I said as I sat up and copied his pose.
"Heh, are you sure? The vegetables I found scraped into the plant bowl say otherwise." He said with a knowing smirk as he crossed his arms.
"W-Wonder how that happened..." I said as I turned away and hid with the blanket.
"Ha Ha!" He laughed at my denial. "How about I read you a story from one of your mother's books?" He asked. I quickly tumbled out of the bed with my blanket to the small recliner in the corner. My father just shook his head and walked to the bookshelf to grab a book. He skimmed the shelf as he made his selection. "Ah ha!" He said as he pulled a smaller blue colored book out. He sat down and I scrambled into his lap for him to read. "Comfy?" He asked me to which I nodded my head. "Alright." He said as flipped to a certain page. "This one was one of my favorites. It's called Good Timber."
"The tree that never had to fight
For sun and sky and air and light,
But stood out in the open plain
And always got its share of rain,
Never became a forest king
But lived and died a scrubby thing.
The man who never had to toil
To gain and farm his patch of soil,
Who never had to win his share
Of sun and sky and light and air,
Never became a manly man
But lived and died as he began.
Good timber does not grow with ease:
The stronger wind, the stronger trees;
The further sky, the greater length;
The more the storm, the more the strength.
By sun and cold, by rain and snow,
In trees and men good timbers grow."
"...Hey Dad, what does that mean?" I sleepily asked as I looked up at him with my eyes half open.
"It means to grow strong people need to live, and to live means you'll struggle."
"But why do *yawn* do people need to struggle?"
"Because you need to grow and work hard for what you have so that you can protect it." He said as he looked out the window. "Does that make sense?" He asked as he looked back down at me. I was struggling to keep my eyes open at this point.
"...I...guess..." Was all I answered before I fell asleep.
The perfect name came to mind as I scribbled it down on the board. When I was done everyone was cheering "Froppy" for some reason.
"I was zoned out, what's a Froppy?" I leaned over and asked Iida.
"That is Asui's chosen hero name." He informed me.
"I said call me Tsu." Tsu said as she sat back down in front of Iida.
"Alright, who's next?" Nemuri asked the class. I raised my hand. "That punk!"
"Stop calling me a punk, Nemuri!" I shouted as I got up and walked to the front.
"Stop calling me Nemuri when I'm on duty." She said as she crossed her arms. I ignored her and stood at the podium.
"Alright, I want my name to reflect what I stand for. I want to-- No I'm going be the hero that everyone can depend on. The hero that no matter what, everyone knows I'll still be standing!" I said as I turned the board around and read it out loud. "The Undaunted Hero: Golem!"
"I like it! Though I am honestly surprised you didn't use your mom's old name." Nemuri said.
"It didn't feel right, I want my name to stand out on it's own."
"...What's a golem?" I heard Mineta quietly ask.
"I like it! It's absolutely manly!" Kirishima yelled.
"Yeah it is, but don't you think that's a big promise there?" Ojiro asked.
"Are you kidding me? Look at me." I said jokingly, my voice dripping with fake confidence. Some of the class quietly snickered, while the rest groaned at the joke. I then got a paper ball thrown at my head.
"Boo, get off the stage before your big head collapses it!" Jiro jokingly chastised. I grumbled and threw the paper right back at her. She dodged it and it hit Sero, who was sitting behind her.
"Alright! I'm next!" Kirishima said as I walked away from the podium. "Sturdy Hero: Red Riot!"
"Red Riot?" Nemuri repeated. "You're paying homage to the Chivalrous Hero: Crimson Riot, right?" she asked.
"Yeah. It's pretty old-fashioned, but the image I'm going for is for Crimson himself." He explained.
"Hmm. If you're bearing a name you admire, it'll come with that much more pressure." Nemuri warned.
"I'm prepared for that!" Kirishima said with confidence. As they were talking about his name I let out a yawn and closed my eyes for a minute. I got a few more minutes of rest, but was rather short lived when Bakugo started yelling.
"Why not?!"
"Because 'King Explosion Murder' is just rather untasteful." Nemuri explained.
"It should be 'Explosion Boy'!" Kirishima laughed.
"Shut up, Weird Hair!" Bakugo yelled back.
"*yawn* Why not Epicenter or something like that?" I recommend.
"Because you came up with it, so it's dumb!" Bakugo turned to yell at me. I just gave him a rude gesture back and leaned in my chair.
"Okay, my turn..." Uraraka said nervously as she got up. "This is what I thought of: "Uravity"."
"Sounds stylish!" Nemuri praised, much to Uraraka's relief. "Choosing hero names is going more smoothly that I thought it would! All that's left is Bakugo, who needs to rethink his, aaannnd-" she said as she looked around the room. "Iida and uh Midoriya, right? How about you go, Midoriya?"
"Y-Yes!" Izuku said as he got up. As he got to the podium and showed his board the class went quiet. Deku. If that's what he wants I guess.
"Are you really okay with that?" Kaminari asked him.
"You might be called that forever, you know." Kirishima warned Izuku.
"Yeah. I didn't like this name until now." Izuku started explaining. "But someone changed the meaning of it, and that had a huge impact on me. It made me really happy. This is my hero name!" He proudly said. After that Iida just used his name which really surprised me because I thought for sure he'd use his families name.
"Now that everyone's decided on their hero names, we'll go back to talking about the internships." Aizawa started the next period with. "They will last for a week. As for where you'll have them, those who had offers from pros will be given your own lists, so you can choose from them yourself. Those of you who didn't have offers will choose from around forty agencies around the country that are partnered with U.A. that will vary in place and specialties."
"For example, Thirteen would be focused on rescues from the accidents and disasters more than fighting villains." Nemuri elaborated.
"Think carefully before you choose." Aizawa said as he passed out the sheets.
"I wanna fight crime in urban areas!" Kirishima said.
"I hope I can intern at a place with floods. I wonder if there are any?" Tsu asked out loud.
"Turn in your choices before the weekend." Aizawa said as the bell rang.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the bell for lunch rang I was at my desk looking at the packet of offers I got. Almost 2,000 offers. It was in alphabetical order and I just finished the C's. I don't even know who 90 percent of the people are and the small description on each is not helping any.
"Hey guys, have you decided what pro agency you're going to yet?" Mina asked out loud to everyone.
"I'm going to Mt. Lady!" Mineta said.
"You're thinking something perverted, aren't you?" Tsu said as she walked by him.
"Am not!" he said nervously.
"One, we know exactly why you did. Two, isn't Kamui Woods at the same agency?" I asked as I leaned back in my seat.
"Doesn't matter! Mt. Lady is there!" Mineta said excitedly.
"Ashido, you made it pretty far in the festival right? It's weird that you didn't get many offers." Ojiro said as he walked up to her desk.
"You said it!" Mina whined.
"Deku, have you decided yet?" Uraraka turned and asked. Unfortunately he was in another muttering storm about his options. I threw a paper ball to get his attention.
"Huh?! Oh, sorry! I was lost in thought..." He said as he realized he was being talked to. "You're really thinking carefully about this, huh?" Tsu asked him.
"Actually, I've already decided!" Uraraka said.
"Really?" Mina replied.
"Battle Hero: Gunhead's agency." She said.
"Woah, ain't Gunhead one of the more known battle types?" I asked as I got up and still skimmed through my list.
"Yup! I got an offer from them!" Uraraka said as she punched the air.
"Really? I totally thought you were trying to be like Thirteen." Izuku said.
"Ultimately, yeah. But fighting Bakugo at the sports festival made me think--" She said as she made another fighting pose. "The stronger I get, the more possibilities I have! If I only do what I want, I'll have a narrower perspective!"
As I walked over to them I noticed something during Uraraka's explanation.
"Izuku."
"Hmm?" He hummed as he turned to me.
"Why are you trembling?" I asked him as I tapped his shoulder.
"Oh, this? It's an air chair exercise." He explained as I then noticed he wasn't actually sitting in his chair, but slightly above it.
"Don't tell me you were doing that all through class?" Uraraka asked as she was surprised.
I stopped paying attention when I finished the D section and saw the first name on E.
Endeavour Hero Agency.
