15. Acid and Rubble
I wasn't in awe of his power, impressive as it was. No, I was in awe of how careless he was with his power. I was in awe of how he just released that power onto half the crowd. There are children in there dammit! I snapped my head to look at the damage, but was relieved to see the ice had narrowly avoided the crowd. Whether it was dumb luck or Todoroki's control, that was inexcusable.
"Sero is immobilized, Todoroki is the winner." Nemuri said as she started chipping the ice that formed off of her. The crowd didn't cheer, they were simply too in shock of the power. Soon however the crowd was giving well wishes to Sero for the utter defeat.
As they did so Todoroki walked up to Sero and began to heat up the ice to get him out. I looked at Todoroki as he did so and he looked like a shell. It wasn't his normal calm and collected attitude, but just a simply emotionless one. The anger I felt slipped and was replaced with sympathy. Maybe he didn't mean to put that much power into it or maybe he did, either way the look on his face was one I understood. Regret.

-Y/n’s POV-
“Everybody, sorry for the long wait!” Present Mic apologized because of the break that was needed to clean up the amount of ice Todoroki made in the stadium. “The stage that was frozen in the second match is finally dry, so onto the next match!” He announced as the participants walked up. “The assassin from Class B! Pretty things have thorns, you know! From the hero course, it’s Ibara Shiozaki!”
As she walked up I got a good look at her. She’s a rather cute girl of medium height with green, thorn-covered vines for hair, one set wrapped around her forehead a couple of times that she keeps at a reasonably manageable length: just above her waist. Her eyes are squinted and dark green with long lower eyelashes. She has a very refined attitude simply by the way she walks.
“Versus--Sparking Killing Boy! From the hero course it’s Denki Kaminari!”
“Sparking Killing Boy?” I questioned out loud. “Why does that sound like something you would call him?” I asked Jiro as I turned around in my seat to look at her, to which she simply shrugged.
“Now, we’ll have a super flashy battle this time too--” Present Mic got into it, but was interrupted.
“Um excuse me? What did you mean by ‘assassin’?” Shiozaki asked, raising her hand to speak as the other was over her heart. “I have only come to find victory, not to take my opponent’s life.”
“I-I’m sorry!” Present Mic stuttered out an apology to the girl. Meanwhile I was confused as hell about how her rather quiet voice carried so well in the stadium for Mic to hear her up in the booth.
“In the first place, I wished to enter UA High School not for wicked reasons, but for the salvation of others…” Shiozaki preached as if she was in church.
“I said, I’m sorry!” Present Mic interrupted her speech. “My bad, okay?!”
“Thank you for understanding!” Shiozaki thanked with a bow and then walked back to the center.
“A-Anyway, Start!” Mic yelled beginning the match.
The match itself was nothing spectacular, honestly. It was over in a flash quite literally. Kaminari started the match by spouting some nonsense and using his strongest move, from what Jiro and Yaoyorozu have told me of their experience at the USJ, by discharging a large wave of electricity at Shiozaki. She countered this easily by turning around and making a large wall of vines stick out of the arena, effectively making a grounded barrier. After seeing that Kaminari was in some kind of dumbed down state Shiozaki took advantage of this by using her vines to restrain him, ending the match especially quickly.
“What’s that? Didn’t he say he'd settle this in a second?” Monoma mocked over the barrier between Class A and Class B’s seats. “That’s strange, he was defeated in a second, wasn’t he? Class A is supposed to be better than Class B, so isn’t that weird? Hahahaha--!” His rant was interrupted from behind by a chopping sound as he fell.
“Sorry!” Kendo said as she quickly popped over the divider. What the hell is that guy's problem?
After the match Iida got up to go prepare for his fight as the stage was being reset. I noticed Uraraka looking at Izuku with a shocked look, I turned my head to see he had gone into analysis mode again. As Izuku's mumbling continued the whole class was looking at him like he just grew a second head. Getting annoyed by his muttering, I got up from my seat and snatched the burnt book from his hands then smacked him upside the head with it.
“Ah!” Izuku cried out as he snapped out of it, I simply shook my head and placed the book back in his hand.
“You just finished your fight, but you’re already thinking about countermeasures, huh?” Uraraka asked Izuku as he was rubbing the bump on his head.
“Oh, no!” He cried realizing he was geeking out in public again. “Uhm, It’s just, I mean, this is pretty much my hobby…” Izuku quickly explained. “It’s not every day I get a chance to see amazing quirks outside of those in our class. Oh, right! I’ve been putting these together for everyone in Class A, too. For your Zero Gravity, too!” He said as he held up a detailed sketch of her hero suit.
“...Deku, you’re been amazing since I met you, but the sports festival is making me think you’re amazing all over again.” She said to him surprised at the detailed notes after only seeing her quirk in action very little so far.

As the fourth match started, it was between Iida and Hatsume. The entire thing was both hilarious and sad to watch. Apparently Hatsume had talked Iida into using some of her gadgets for their match. The first one was some form of leg braces that helped the wearer’s movement. As Hatsume dodged Iida easily with her support items she explained them as if it was an infomercial. Hatsume wasn’t even fighting back as she went on talking about her ‘babies’. I was confused until I realized why she was doing this. Hatsume had absolutely nothing to prove to the hero’s watching, she was putting on a show for the Support companies. Shit, that’s smart.
As she tripped up Iida, Hatsume demonstrated the other tech he was wearing. Apparently, if you tripped or lost your balance it would right you with the air jets on it. I was feeling sorry for Iida because he really was trying his best out there, but Hatsume had him wrapped right around her finger. After 10 solid minutes of this Hatsume forfeited the match, letting Iida win without ever landing a single hit on her.
As Iida’s ‘match’ ended I got up for mine. As I got up Uraraka stood up too and walked the other way. She had a very serious look on her face, but who could blame her, she was up against the angry bottle of piss flavored gatorade himself for her match.

As I made my way out of the entrance tunnel to the field I was attempting the best confidant face I could pull off. I know what you're thinking and I definitely don't have stage fright, fuck off. As Mina and I made our way to our spots on the arena Present Mic started.
“We’re gonna keep right on going with the fifth match! Is something going to come out of those horns? Well? From the hero course it’s Mina Ashido!” Present Mic introduced her as she was stretching. “Verses--The not so gentle giant of the first years! From the hero course it’s Y/n L/n!” Not so gentle? Okay brushing that off I tried to give the crowd the best smile I could, but I was a nervous wreck right now being in front of all of these people. As we got into our stances I could have sworn I heard someone yell about beating someone else's clothes off. “Fifth match, start!”
“Hey remember, no hard feelings!” I shouted as I immediately threw a baseball sized stone directly at Mina.
“Whoops!” She yelped as she jumped over it doing the splits in the air. As she landed she started sliding around on her acid like ice skates.
I tied lobbing a few more stones while leading the shot, but she would either jump or dodge the projectiles and go right back to sliding. As she circled me Mina would take her own shots with her acid. She grazed me a few times, putting some holes in my uniform, but nothing big. She even hit a few of my stones in the air, dissolving them rather quickly.
“Gonna have to do better than that! Hehehe!” Mina snickered as she circled me again, dodging my shots better than I thought she would.
“Ooh, she’s skating circles around him. Literally! Hope he can keep up.” Present Mic commantated.
“With L/n’s constant attacks and Ashido’s quick reflexes, they’re at a stalemate as it stands until one of them makes a bold move.” Aizawa added on.
“Alright that’s enough of that!” I grunted as I brought my right foot forward and up in a sharp kicking motion, making a knee high jagged stone jet up in Mina’s path. The plan was either she stops, giving me an opening, or she kisses her knees goodbye.
Mina looked ahead and smirked as she picked up speed before she leaped forward. Using the momentum she had she did a handspring off of the speed block towards me. As she was in the air she formed a large wad of acid in her hand.
“Now!” She yelled as she threw the acid at me, with how close it was I couldn’t dodge it. I had an idea. A bad idea because I had no clue if it would work or not, but bad plans were my specialty. I quickly brought my arms up to cover my face and formed a medium sized shield to block my upper body. As I formed the shield I closed my eyes and concentrated on the mineral the shield was made of, hoping for the best. As I heard a splash I opened my eyes to see the acid dripping down and dissolving the ground in front of me as well as my shoes. Damnit I really liked this pair.
“Ha!” I laughed seeing that it worked. Holy shit, thank god that it actually worked. The rock wasn’t the typical slate gray that I usually formed by default, but was a lighter grey with spots of white and very light brown in it. Soapstone, nearly chemically inert. I quickly looked up at Mina, who was still in the air, as she had a look of shock on her face and I threw the rock I used as a shield at her like a discus. It hit her right in the stomach and knocked her out of the air landing right over the boundary line.
“Ashido is over the line, L/n wins the match!” Nemuri announced with a smile on her face. As the crowd cheered I noticed Mina was having trouble getting up. I must have knocked the wind out of her. I jogged over to her and offered her a hand up, she gladly accepted as the crowd seemed to cheer louder at the good sportsmanship.
“Thanks.” Mina said as she stood up. However as soon as she was on her feet she jabbed me in the side. “You cheated, you weren’t supposed to block my acid!” She said with a pout.
“Uh, sorry?” I uncertainly apologized not really knowing how to respond to that.
“Hmmm, fine.” She said in mock anger, but after a few seconds she was laughing it off and waving to the crowd with a smile. I joined her in waving as we walked off the field to our individual entrances.

After the match my stomach decided it was time to eat again so I made my way to one of the snack shops around the stadium. I found a stand that was selling different kinds of french fries so I got a few orders of the indisputable best option, chili cheese fries, and went back to the seats.
As I made it back to the seats I had finished one of the plates and saw I had missed the beginning of the next match with Kirishima and Tetsutetsu. It looked like they were just having an all out slug fest.
“Yo, I miss anything good?” I asked Izuku as I sat down, I also noticed Uraraka was gone too and Iida wasn'tback yet.
“Huh? Oh hi Y/n and not so far no, Kirishima and Tetsutetsu seem pretty evenly matched.” He said.
“Hmm.” I hummed in thought as I put some fries in my mouth. “Wasn’t Yaoyorozu and Tokoyami’s match supposed to be after mine?” I asked through the food in my mouth.
“It was, but it was over so quickly you probably missed it while you were getting you're food.” Ojiro answered from behind.
"*ack* Wait, really! *cough* Who won?" I asked as I choke on some fries after hearing that.
"Tokoyami won after keeping Yaoyorozu on the defensive by immediately attacking with Dark Shadow and pushed her back into the boundary because of Dark Shadow's…" Izuku filled me in, but quickly devolved into muttering. I really feel bad for Yaoyorozu, she didn’t get any time to show off to the pros.
As I was lost in thought I didn’t realize Izuku had gotten up and left. Wow, okay just ditch me like that I guess. I had no idea where everyone went so I decided to stay and watch the fight.
It was dull with the quirk match up, but seeing both of the go back and forth with such passion was definitely something. The fight ended in a draw when they both knocked the other out.
Next up was Uraraka and Bakugo’s fight and I wasn’t sure how to feel about it. Listening to my classmates, I apparently wasn’t the only one.
“Next up is the most disturbing match-up.” Tsu said with worry in her voice.
“I almost don’t want to watch…” Jiro shared the same thought. As they were talking Iida and Izuku both came back.
“Where the hell were you guys?” I asked them as they sat down. They both looked worried about the match as well.
“We were giving Uraraka words of encouragement and attempted to help her devise a plan against Bakugo, but she denied the offer.” Iida told me. Huh, that’s weird. Either she has no hope of winning or she already has a plan. If so then what is it?
“The eighth and last match of the first round! He was kind of famous in middle school! That isn’t the face of a regular person!” Present Mic called out after seeing the scowl of Bakugo’s face. “From the hero course, it’s Katsuki Bakugo!-- Verses! She's the one I’m rooting for! From the hero course, it’s Ochako Uraraka!” After he gave her an intro, I saw Uraraka’s face and she looked like she was focused on whatever she had up her sleeve.
"Midoriya, what was that strategy you were going to tell Uraraka earlier for her to use against Bakugo?" Iida asked before the match started.
"It isn't much, really." He said holding up his notebook. "Kachan's strong. In a real close combat fight he has almost no openings, and the more he moves, the more he sweats, making his Explosion quirk stronger." He explained from memory. "He can use the blasts from his explosions to move around in the air, but if Uraraka touches Kacchan and uses her quirk to make him float, then she may have the upper hand...That's why the first thing Uraraka should do is…" Izuku paused.
"Start!" Present Mic yelled out.
"...a swift attack!" He finished as Uraraka made a dash at Bakugo.
"...No offense Izuku, but that wouldn't work." I said swallowing the last of my fries. "Uraraka’s quirk takes away an object's gravity, she doesn't control it as far as I know." I elaborated.
"But why does that make Midoriya's plan flawed? It seems rather good if I say so myself." Iida asked.
"It's because of Bakugo’s quirk itself. If Uraraka removed Bakugo's gravity he would quickly realize he could just use his explosions as a type of thruster in the air, giving him more mobility." I explained. "If she was against someone else maybe, hell even I would be at a loss...But against Bakugo she has very little advantage whatsoever…" I finished as I continued to look at the match. Both Iida and Izuku looked back at the fight with more concern now.
Uraraka looked like she was banking off of Izuku’s observation that Bakugou usually starts with a right hook and was going for that opening, but Bakugo went for a feint and suddenly brought his right hand down into a sweep and released an explosion point blank at her.
"Uraraka!" Iida, Izuku, and I shouted.
"Even though you're fighting a girl, you have no mercy, do you, Bakugo?" Tsu asked out loud.
The only advantage Uraraka had at the moment was the cloud of smoke that was kicked up. Seeing movement in the smoke to his side, Bakugo sent another explosive swing. As the smoke cleared it was revealed it was only Uraraka’s PE jacket. Using the distraction Uraraka jumped out of the smoke behind Bakugo and attempted to get his back. However Bakugo’s reaction was too quick for her as he swung his right hand on the ground like a matchstick, sending a line of explosions at Uraraka hitting her head on.
"He moved after he saw?" Sero asked, surprised.
"With that reaction time, it doesn't matter if there's a smokescreen or not." Kaminari said. "With Uraraka not being able to activate her quirk unless she touches him, she's at a complete disadvantage with Bakugo’s reflexes."
As Uraraka ran at Bakugo again he sent a larger explosion to head her off, throwing debris over the stage and using the smoke again she tried the same strategy as before. However she yelled this time, getting Bakugo’s attention and took another hit.
What the hell is she doing? It's like she purposefully runs in to get him to attack.
As she came out of the smoke again I noticed something. Where the hell is all of the debris on the stage? There were holes and gashes from Bakugo’s previous attacks, but where was the rubble he kicked up?
"Uraraka keeps attacking without rest, but...this is…" Present mic worriedly commantated.
As he said that I finally saw it. This whole match Uraraka has been staying low to the ground making Bakugo take low swipes to hit her. She wanted him to be swinging indiscriminately at the ground, but wh--! my eyes went wide with surprise when it clicked.
As I was trying to wrap my head around Uraraka's strategy in the match I remembered the one she used in the battle trial, when she used the debris Izuku made as a ranged attack to distract Iida. As soon as I realized this I looked up and couldn't keep a smirk off of my face as I watched the match.
It was at this point people in the stands started berating how brutal Bakugo was being to Uraraka. A handful of pros even said something. Dumbasses, the lot of them.
"There's booing from part of the crowd…But honestly I feel the sa--!" Present Mic tried to say before it sound like he was hit.
"Was that a pro saying he's playing around?" Aizawa asked the crowd. "How many years have you been a pro? If you're saying that with a straight face, there's no point in you watching anymore, so go home!" Aizawa scolded. "Go home, and look into changing careers! Bakugo is being careful because he acknowledges the strength of his opponent who has made it this far." He explained. "It's because he's doing everything he can to win that he can't go easy on her or let his guard down."
"It can't be helped, but it's embarrassing for a pro in the stands to start booing without noticing. She kept her body low as she advanced, concentrating Bakugo’s attacks on the ground, storing up weapons." I heard Monoma say over the divider. "And then, she narrowed his field of vision with relentless attacks to keep him from noticing."
"Ha. I'll have to agree with you on it being embarrassing." I said loader over the barrier.
"Like I care what you Class A bums think!" He yelled back.
"*sigh* And there it is…" I sighed out.
"L/n what do you two mean?" Yaoyorozu asked. I only answered by pointing and looking up. She followed where I was pointing and I saw her eyes go wide.
Uraraka put her finger tips together and the cloud of floating debris above the stage came falling down. She started running at Bakugo hoping her assault would make at least one opening. As she got close Bakugo calmly raised his left hand into the air and released a high powered blast. In one move he destroyed her attack, sent her flying, and made the whole stadium feel the blast.
As the smoke cleared Bakugo was standing unharmed and Uraraka was on the ground. Even with her plan thrown away so easily, she still stood up to fight. Respectable, and judging by Bakugo's face he thought so too.
As Bakugo charged her she turned to give it one last shot, but her body had other plans it appeared. As she turned she collapsed from how much she pushed herself for the match. Even as she was on the ground she still tried to crawl and continue the fight. Nemuri then ran in to check on her and called the fight there giving Bakugo the victory.
(A/n: Hey Artillery here, I know this one seems shorter then the other chapters so far and that's cause I wanted to get this one out soon. My computer died on me so I'm having to type and edit on my phone and it is a pain in the ass I'll tell ya. I know I need to work on my action descriptions, but other then that let me know what you guys thought!)
(A/n mark-II: So question for yall. Should I leave this a reader insert or form this point on write Y/n as an OC? Name, favorite colors, all that stuff would be more static and set, what are your opinions on that?)
