12. The Obstacle Course

-Y/n's POV-

It was the morning of the sports festival. I woke up in my apartment, much to the behest of Mrs. Midoriya, I spent the last few days alone and training by myself. I just really didn't feel like talking to anyone. Izuku tried his best to lighten my mood, but he didn't push it because he knew the reason behind it. I got out of bed and put on the best face I could before getting ready. As I was getting all of my things together and watering my plants my phone went off. It was wishes of good luck from my aunt and other things.

I stepped out and walked over to meet Izuku at his door. It opened as I walked up and soon I was showered with Mrs. Midoriya's wishes of good luck as well. We walked to the station in relative silence because I didn't feel like talking and Izuku didn't know what to talk about.

When we got to UA all I could see were the huge crowds and smoke fireworks. We had to enter the school through a side entrance because the front was hounded by reporters and spectators for the festival.

We were ushered into a waiting room after we changed into our PE uniforms. Everyone was talking probably to calm their nerves. I wasn't in Izuku's shoes, I didn't really need to advertise myself for the pros. Primarily because of my aunt I was guaranteed at least a few offers, but if I'm going to be a pro I need to show the world who I am. I was just leaning against the wall by the door with my arms crossed, just lost in thought. Jiro was chatting away with Yaoyorozu when she noticed me. She came up and waved a hand in front of my face getting my attention.

Jiro: "Too nervous to chat, huh?" she said leaning against the wall next to me.

Y/n: "*sigh* No, just got a lot on my mind right now." I said absentmindedly as I pulled out some gum and put a piece in my mouth before offering her some. She looked like she wanted to to push the subject further, but Iida came in before she could.

Iida: "Everyone be ready! We will be entering soon!" He yelled, getting everyone's attention. As we were all getting ready to go Todoroki walked up to Izuku,

Todoroki: "Midoriya."

Midoriya: "...Todoroki? What is it?" he asked, trying not to let his nervousness show and failing. The whole class stopped to listen to their conversation.

Todoroki: "Looking at things objectively, I think I'm stronger than you." he said plainly. "But...All Might has his eye on you, doesn't he?" he asked, making Izuku and I jump slightly. "I'm not trying to pry about that. But I'm going to beat you." he stated, making Izuku's eyes go wide.

Kaminari: "Oh? Is this the best in the class making a declaration of war?" he asked, trying to break the tension. Kirishima got up to diffuse the situation, but I was in the middle of it before he was.

Y/n: "That's a little uncalled for right now, isn't it?" I asked, putting a hand on Todoroki's shoulder. I put a little bit of pressure behind to drive my point home to him.

Todoroki: "We're not here to make friends." he said shaking my hand off and walking away. "So what does it matter."

Y/n: "It doesn't matter." I said, making him stop. "Well.. you don't at least." after I said that he turned gave me a glare, one I was happy to repay. "You can go brood and gripe all you want, just don't try to take other people down into your little game of pride..." I said to him.

Midoriya: "Todoroki, I don't know what you're thinking when you say you'll beat me, but of course you're better than me." he said as all eyes went to him. "I think you're more capable than most people...Looking at it objectively."

Kirishima: "Midoriya, you probably shouldn't talk so negatively..." he tried to go and console him, but I stopped him by putting my arm in front of him and shaking my head.

Midoriya: "But, everyone--The students from the other courses are aiming for the top with everything they've got!" he said as he looked like he was remembering something. "I can't afford to fall behind. I'll be going for it with everything I have, too." he said as he steeled his gaze. After that we all silently walked to the stadium entrance tunnel and waited to be called out by class. As we waited I heard Present Mic start the announcements.

Present Mic: "Hey!" he said getting the crowd excited. "Pay attention, audience! Swarm, mass media! This year's high school rodeo of adolescence that you all love, the UA sports festival, is about to begin! Everybody, are you ready?!" he yelled to the crowd. "It's time for the first year students to take the stage!" That was our queue. We started walking out of the dark tunnel into the arena with determined looks on our faces. "The UA sports festival! The huge battle where fledgling heroes sharpen their swords once a year! Anyway these are the guys, right? The miraculous new star who overcame enemy attacks with their hearts of steel!" he said, hyping up the crowd. "Hero course, Class 1-A!" he said as we filled the field.

I looked around and saw all the people in the stands cheering. One part of me wanted to mop up the attention, but another part of me was shaking in terror of all the people here. Guess with one was portrayed on my face.

Jiro: "I thought you said you weren't nervous?" she asked in a teasing tone as we walked.

Y/n: "I-I'm not nervous, who's nervous, me? No!" I said trying to calm my now unsteady nerves. I was so caught up in my head lately it didn't even register till now how many eyes would be on me.

Jiro: "Ah don't worry about it big guy, they'll love ya!" she said condescendingly and patting me on the back.

Y/n: "It's not they're opinions of me I'm worried about." I said under my breath.

Present Mic: "They haven't been getting as much airtime, but this class is also full of talent! Hero course, Class 1-B!" he yelled over the microphone. "Next up, general studies Classes C, D, and E!" he said, not bothering with separate introductions. "Support course, Classes F, G,and H are here, too! And business courses, Classes I, J, and K!" he said as the crowd cheered. "All of UA's first years are here now!" making the crowd go wild.

As everyone was walking to the center I could feel the eyes of the other classes land on us. I get why a lot of them won't try very hard, but it wouldn't be much of a sports festival if it was only the hero courses duking it out now would it? As everyone participating got to the center the official referee for the festival walked up. My face went pale seeing who it was. It was the R-Rated Hero: Midnight. A close friend of my aunt's.

She was a tall, curvaceous woman with sky blue eyes, which tilt downwards in the center; framed by a set of rather long eyelashes. She had abundant spiky dark purple hair that is made up of layers of varying lengths, the longest ones reaching down below her waist. Her chin-length bangs were split into three sections; two swept to the sides and one over her face, going diagonally down to the left between her eyes. She also has a small mole under her left eye, as well as red-painted nails. Her hero costume was very similar to one of a traditional dominatrix. She wore a black leather breastless leotard over a white bodysuit, which emphasizes her breasts, body, and legs, the leotard possessing red gemstone-like accessories in a vertical pattern from the collar to the midriff. She also wore translucent black thigh-high stockings that are connected to her utility belt and black knee-boots. She had a small, red mask outlining her eyes, a handcuff on each wrist, and a red utility belt decorated with gold studs around her hips, a matching pentagonal buckle in its center. She was even carrying a flogger-style whip.

Midnight: "Time for the player pledge!" she called out. You could hear the men in the crowd cheer louder.

Kirishima: "What is Ms. Midnight wearing?" he asked with a light blush on his face.

Kaminari: "That's the R-rated hero for you." he said with a straight face.

Tokoyami: "Is it okay for her to be at a high school?" he asked, not seeming affected.

Midnight: "Quiet everyone! Representing the students is Katsuki Bakugo from Class 1-A!" she said, calling him up there on the stage.

Midoriya: "What? It's Kacchan?" he asked, completely surprised.

Sero: "That guy did finish first in the entrance exam." he tried to reason, too, which a girl from general studies piped up.

Female student: "In the hero course." she said, sounding annoyed while another student glared over her shoulder at us.

Sero: "It's obvious she hates us." he said in a whisper.

Kaminari: "Yeah and it's all Bakugo's fault." he said as Bakugo took the stage. Bakugo just stood there for a few seconds before saying anything. What he said though really makes me wish he had kept his mouth shut.

Bakugo: "I pledge--" he started "That I'll be number one." he said in a very bored tone causing all of the first years to nearly riot.

Iida: "Why are you doing something so disgraceful?!" he yelled at Bakugo as he stepped forward out of the crowd.

Bakugo: "At least become a nice bouncy step for me to jump off of." he said turning back to the students yelling at him and giving a thumbs down at them, making them even more pissed.

Y/n: "...He would have treated this whole thing like a joke before..." I thought to myself. "You're actually taking something seriously huh?" I asked him with a smirk on my face as he walked by, all I got was a glare as he kept walking.

As I watched him walk away I suddenly felt a chill go up my spine and before I could turn around Midnight had me in a headlock, giving me a noogie. As long as I've known her shes treated me more of a little brother then anything else. Even after I was a few inches taller she always knew how to screw with me. It would be endearing if she wasn't so annoying about it.

Midnight: "Hey, squirt how ya been?!" she asked while I tried and failed to fight her off. "You don't text or call anymore! What's up with that?" she demanded to know as she released me.

Y/n: "The last time I called you on the phone Nemuri, it was in the middle of one of your dates and you said and I quote 'Shut up punk! I'm trying to get laid!'." I said giving air quotes after busting off my shoulder.

Midnight: "And I would've too, but nooo someone had 'an emergency'!" she said in a mocking tone.

Y/n: "You were supposed to be babysitting me and there was a fire in the kitchen!" I yelled waving my hands around.

Midnight: "You were fine!" she yelled in reply.

Y/n: "I was 10!" I yelled back. She tried to say something back, but couldn't think of anything. "Yeah that's what I thought." I grumbled as I crossed my arms.

Kaminari: "U-Um...L/n? How do you know Midnight?" he asked as his voice cracked every time his eyes darted to her.

Y/n: "*sigh* She and my aunt are friends, she used to babysit me for her when I was a kid..." I grumbled out as I pinched the bridge of my nose, ignoring Mineta screaming about something being unfair.

Midnight: "Yep! I've known this brat since he was in diapers." she said putting an arm around my shoulder.

Y/n: "You've only known me since I was 6!" I yelled back somehow even more annoyed than before.

Midnight: "Well you whined like you were a baby..." she said with a sly grin on her face. This made most of my classmates try to hold back laughs. "Oh! I still have pictures from back then! Who wants to see?!" she said as she pulled out her phone from her belt.

Mina: "*gasp* You have pictures of little Y/n! I have to see!" she squealed as she and Hagakure rushed off to look. Yaoyorozu peeked over Midnight's shoulder as well pretending not to be interested with a blush on her face. I just crouched down and sulked in embarrassment as Izuku patted me on the back. After about a minute of this, Nemuri put her phone away to start the festival.

Midnight: "Alright squirt, good luck out there!" she said as she walked back over to the stage to kick this off. "Now let's get started right away." said into a microphone. "This first game is what you'd call a qualifier! Every year, many drink their tears here! Now for the fateful first game!" she said with a flare of her whip as a bright blue and green hologram popped up behind her and spun like a slot machine in a casino. "This year, it's...this!" she said as it stopped on an obstacle race.

Midoriya: "An obstacle course race?" Izuku mumbled.

Midnight: "All 11 classes will participate in this race." she explained. "The course will be the outer circumference of this stadium--about four kilometres! Our school's selling point is freedom!" she said as she licked her and side eyed all of us first years. "As long as you stay on the course, it doesn't matter what you do! Now, take your places everyone!"

As she said this she gestured to the side where a bright red gate lit up with three green lights flashing on. Beyond the gate had inward sloped walls quite literally making a bottle neck out of the gate leading into a cramped tunnel, this must be the first obstacle. Everyone lined up ready to fight for first.

Y/n: "I need to do this." I said in my head as one of the three lights turned off. "I need to show I'm more than a disaster waiting to happen." the second light turned off. "I need to prove myself." I thought in my head. Who it was I needed to prove myself too, I don't really know anymore. The last light turned off.

Midnight: "START!" as she yelled that there was a mad scramble through the hallway.

As we ran I heard Present Mic start commentating, but honestly with the adrenaline I was on I didn't even hear what he was saying. As expected as everyone entered the hall it was a madhouse with elbows and shoulders being sent everywhere. Normally given my size I would try and not throw my weight around when trying to get out of a crowd, but in this circumstance I just planned to plow straight through the herd like a crazed bulldozer.

As I steadily waded through the mosh pit I saw Todoroki side eye me through the crowd. I immediately had an idea what he was planning to do the second I felt a chill on my ankles. As suddenly as I lifted a small stone pillar a few feet off the ground, sending a couple of students that were next to me flying, a wave of ice quickly locked most of the students in the tunnel down.

Y/n: "That trick didn't work the first time Todoroki!" I yelled after him as I leaped from my pillar to chase after him as he took the lead.

Right behind me were Bakugo, Yaoyorozu, and Aoyama as it appeared they reacted just as quickly as I had. As I landed I started following the path of ice Todoroki made by forming cleat-like spikes on the bottom of my shoes that I opted to use for the festival. I looked over my shoulder to see that all of my class had made it out of the gate unscathed.

As I was tailing Todoroki, by somehow Mineta overtook me by throwing his ball-like things and using them as hopping stones.

Y/n: "Holy shit, you're NOT useless!" I yelled in a shocked tone as I ran.

As he went to attack Todoroki with some move a giant metal hand swiped him out of the air and sent him flying back. I stopped dead in my tracks to see in front of us was a hoard of the faux villains. As suddenly as they popped up Present Mic's voice was heard.

Present Mic: "Obstacles have appeared! Starting with the first barrier! The Robo-inferno!" he said as there were at least ten of the One-pointers blocking the way. The student caught up to us as the barricade popped up and were in shock at the opponents that were in front of us.

As they were in shock I took initiative and bolted forward. These things were slow and they were only an obstacle all I needed to do was get past. As I tried running underneath one of them it reacted far faster than they did in the entrance exam. It punched the ground in front of me narrowly missing, as it brought it's fist up I latched onto it to get some height advantage. As it took its arm up quickly to wipe me off it threw me into the air, as I was up in the air it reared its arm back to slap me out of the shy. I braced myself by forming rock on my arms and legs to try and tank the hit, but as I fell a blast of cold air hit me icing over my front. As I broke the ice on me I looked down to see not just the robot I was dealing with, but a handful of them were frozen.

Y/n: "Was...was that Todoroki?" I gaped in my head. As I realized I was about to hit the frozen bot an idea came to mind and I smirked. This would be bad ass if it worked.

I angled myself to the robot's back as I came down and turned the spikes on my shoes into singular blades on each foot. I have never ice skated before, but hell 'there's a time for anything, right?'. As I came down hard I realized these things are about as stable as an asylum patient. I tried to stable myself with my hands by leaning back and pivoting off the ground, but it wasn't enough so I jumped to another bot that was going down. I saw a path to the other side and by some miracle I didn't eat it and made it out right behind Todoroki.

Y/n: "A little overkill don't you think!" I yelled at him as we were neck and neck. He said nothing as he threw a blast of ice my way. "Fair enough!" I yelled as I backed up.

We ran for a few minutes after that until we came to what I assumed was the second obstacle. It was a deep pit that I couldn't see the bottom of with pillars coming up that were connected in a spider web of tight ropes. This was something I honestly was afraid of seeing, it was something that took finesse to run the tight ropes or you could just go straight over the pit. I could probably hop from pillar to pillar but that will really slow me down and Todoroki will take the lead even further, but I had no other choice.

Todoroki didn't waste a beat and immediately started skating like he was before by freezing over the rope as he went. Before I got to the edge I covered my legs and leaped from one pillar to the next. I got about halfway through before everyone else caught up. Bakugo raged past me in the air and I looked back and noticed Tsu just charging over the ropes faster than me or Todoroki were with everyone else still at the cliff. As I was looking back I didn't gauge my next jump right and missed, but as I went down a steel cable shot right by my head and impaled itself in the rock. Without hesitating I reached for the line and climbed back up onto the pillar as a pink haired blur flew past my head. I saw Hatsume as she gave me a smile and a thumbs up and I noticed . I saw that a decent amount of people had passed me after that and continued to the last leg of the race to try and close the gap.

By the time I made it to the last obstacle both Todoroki and Bakugo were halfway through what looked like a minefield from how some people were exploding and sent flying in pink puffs of smoke. They were taking shots at each other so that bought me some time. I only had one option to at least catch up now.

-No One's Pov-

Present Mic: "And now, we've got someone new in the lead! Rejoice, mass media! It's the kind of development you guys love!" he yelled over the crowd as Bakugo overtook Todoroki. "Wait what's this?" he asked as something caught his eye. It was Y/n L/n standing at the beginning of the minefield. "Has L/n given up, even after being at the front of the pack most of the race? That's a bummer!" as he said that Aizawa looked like he had finally taken an interest in things.

Aizawa: "What are you doing, kid?" he wondered as he stared at the screen.

As Y/n stood there as his demeanor changed and he got a sharp look in his eye. He closed his eyes and took a sprinter's stance, but as he did a very thick layer of rock climbed up his arms and legs covering his entire body stopping just before his head at the bottom of his chin. He opened his eyes and brought his head up as the camera zoned in on his face, the look he had even intimidated some of the pros watching. He stared straight ahead as the layer of rock formed over his head leaving only his eyes showing.

Once the "armor" was complete Y/n broke into a dead sprint straight though the field. He wasn't dogdeing or avoiding any of the mines in his path. He was simply powering through them as he picked up speed like a crazed bull charging some idiot that jumped into its pen. The armor took damage with each mine, but he didn't slow down. He rushed past those in front of him as he closed the gap drastically with the lead.

As he reached the end of the field the last mine blew up right in his face shattering the top portion of the armor and making him stagger a moment, but he recovered quickly. Anyone watching could see how much the move took out of him just by the look of sudden exhaustion on his face as he tried to close the gap, but was obviously low on steam.

As Y/n caught up to Todoroki and Bakugo, who were still taking shots at each other, there was a giant explosion and bright pink light from the back of the field. All three stopped to look to see it was Midoriya flying over them on a piece of the robots from before. Bakugo launched up in a rage after him.

Bakugo: "Deku! Don't you dare go ahead of me!" he yelled as he chased the greenette.

Todoroki forgoed his hesitation to freeze over the field and make a path for others so he could catch up. Y/n grunted at this development and powered forward with a second wind.

All four were neck and neck as Midoriya was about to land, but as he did he flipped around and using the shard of metal slammed on the ground in front of the three setting off a mine propelling himself forward and dazing his pursuers as he took the lead. The three charged out of the smoke all focused on taking first.

Present Mic: "Aizawa your class is amazing! What're you teaching them?!" he asked in amazement.

Aizawa: "I didn't do anything. They got each other fired up on their own." he said as all four were in a dead sprint they came into the tunnel.

Present Mic: "UA sports festival, first-year stage!-"

Aizawa: "Not even listening!"

Present Mic: "Who could've predicted the developments at the beginning or this conclusion? Right now, the first person back in the stadium is that man..." he said as he looked to see who came in first "Izuku Midoriya's made a huge splash!" he yelled over the mic and the crowd erupted. "Followed my Bakugo in second, Todoroki in third, And L/n in forth!"

-Y/n's Pov-

As I collapsed into the fake grass of the stadium gasping for breath I heard the crowd roaring and I looked up to see Izuku standing there with a tear filled smile on his face along with the scoreboard on the big screen.

Y/n: "First? Not bad, bud. Not bad at all." I thought with a smile on my face as I looked back at Izuku with pride.

A/N: I know I said I was going to put the whole sports festival in one chapter, but I had a lot of stuff come up as I was trying to write this chapter. So to give yall something to read before ya forget about lil' ol' me, here ya go. Just like always remember to let me know what you think and sorry again about the wait! Have a good one!
