Chapter 6: Gods playing with fire
Here is where things start to get tasty. I really hope I get to cause the intrigue I hoped for this chapter to cause. Enjoy!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was night time already and I woke up besides Luna when Chiron banged his wooden staff on the floor. We both opened our eyes in surprise to find out we fell asleep and our hands were touching. We quickly got up, with both of our faces Rudolph red and Chiron helped by interrupting. "You two should come already to the dinning pavilion else you will have to hold your hunger until next morning."
We walked in silence and Luna and I were too embarrassed as to look at each other but I could see her from the corner of my eye getting closer until she was grabbing my sleeve again. I didn't want to go over the line but I wanted to hold her hand so, I did it. She didn't seem to react in any way and my mind was worried of scaring her but I was too late to turn back now so I just hoped for the best.
Once we got to the pavilion we both slowly let go of each other's hand. We continued walking toward the center as some campers looked at us with curiosity. The rumor's got around very quick in this place I could hear some saying something about special quest, mysterious, scary, and other things I got out of context. When we were up front, Chiron made took his bronze cup and hit it gently with a fork in sign of silence for all the campers. He then spoke. "Good evening everyone. I hope your trainings are going well and I hope all of those who just began are learning well from their cabin mates. Now, talking about new campers, I come to present to you two of our newest campers, Luna and Gabriel. For the moment, they haven't been claimed so as protocol, Hermes cabin, take good care of them until then. Don't tease them too much.
As I was saying. This two arrived today as they were expected to 16 years ago on the quest of an Athena cabin member many of you must have heard in the stories of a nightmare duo between the Ares cabin and Athena cabin. That same heroic, intense young girl gave up everything for her quest and she delivered perfectly. Tonight, we'll toast for her. Also, the fact that she was sent on this mission for these two children most mean something, I don't know whether it will be good or bad but I hope you can all help them and take good care of them until we find out. That's all for tonight. I want you all to raise your cups for the Athena cabin member Kika." One line of tables yelled in amusement and happiness and then everybody did as Chiron said. "May you all have a pleasant rest of the night," He finished and then turned at us. "Go sit with the line of tables over there where they all are playing and eating at the same time."
We did as he said and as soon as we sat down we were surrounded. They asked us a ton of questions to which we could barely answer little by little. Chiron gave a menacing glance towards them and things calmed a bit more. One of them then said, "Oh you guys don't know how this works. Think of what you want to eat the most. It can be anything as well as the drink except for any alcoholic drinks of course. Leave as much as you wish to leave to aside and when you are finished make a tribute to the gods with the food you chose to leave aside."
We did so and we were amazed even after all we had seen that day. The drink and food magically were brought to us. While we were eating Luna gave a little sound that showed surprise. When I asked her what happened she whispered to me, "I know that girl." She carefully pointed to the end of the table where a girl with black hair, and little rays of blue and white in each side of her hair. She wore a Totoro jacket on top of her camp shirt and her eyes were brown and partly narrow. I was surprised Luna knew another half-blood so I asked her where from. She told me she met her at a acting program that she was in a couple of years ago. I found it interesting but before I could comment, I saw that weird, Michu girl looking at me from the other row with intense eyes and she made the "I'm watching you" sign which I didn't know how to respond but by letting Luna know she was there. Then that guy who we told us about the food thing made the worst question ever. "Are you guys a couple?"
I choked in the pasta I was eating and the attention went to me but I managed to shake my hands to say no while Luna did the same. "We are just friends," she said. "He's just been very kind to me in this whole new situation and I guess that's brought us close." The guy which I hadn't put much attention until now looked at us with a mischievous grin. I could tell he didn't believe us and was now interested in making us accept that we were a couple. Now that I saw him closely, He was tall and dark skinned. He had short dark hair and glasses on. He wore a brown leather jacket with the words, "Bad Wolf" written on it and dark jeans. He was very charismatic but it wasn't very comfortable when he brought couple topics on purpose.
I finished my plate and left a big juicy piece of meat to the side and half a glass of Pepsi to the tribute. I went directly to the fire and I silently spoke to whoever would be my parent, "Umm... I hope you have a taste similar to mine. Whoever you are, if you get time to tell me how I ended up with my parents, where I come from, or really anything about who I really am... I would be extremely grateful. Anyway, I hope you like it," I said as I tossed the food to the fire. As soon as I did the fire turned vivid blue and black. I rose nearly 6 feet above me and then redirected towards me. I yelled and guarded with just my hands but it didn't burn me. It circled on top of me.
The fire started to take form of a weird indigenous symbol I didn't recognize. It was a long cross that opened in two in a moon like figure with pointy endings and a circle in the middle of the opening. It looked like a human worshiping something. But while the fire was still taking form, and stayed blurry, it turned like a coin. From the strange figure it turned into a trident. The flames looked like they were fighting for territory. Some turned black and dark green while the other side was bright green with light blue. While the flames fought for which shape and color was the dominant voices began to ounce on my head and they just got louder and louder.
"Why did you come?" said one voice. "You should not be here! We made sure of that," said a second voice. "The kid was your mistake and I was a fool. We have no choice but to take responsibility." "This is work of Athena! I'm sure. She gave the tip to the oracle of two demigods down there. Depending on who's the other child's parent, we might get a clue." "You are right. YOU, kid, I'm sorry but just like we helped you, we'll need your help. If you don't settle this soon, Olympus will be in uproar and someone will have to come forward for your appearance in camp half-blood. Zeus must be pissed... if my head wasn't in the way I would be making popcorn. We can explain your existence, but not the awakening of our blessings." "Things will be tight here for a while. Soon I suppose you'll go on a quest boy. We'll do our job here and we have big expectations on you. You carry both our blessings after all. Don't fail us young half-blood. We do prefer not getting apprehended for this. Good luck." "Mostly with her, hahahaha," said the second voice.
The voices stopped and the excruciating pain knocked me out. The last few things I was able to see while I fell unconscious were all the campers looking at me with their faces in terror and Luna coming towards me before I hit the ground.
It was still dark when I woke up, but fire lightened the room. It took me some time to fully recover my vision from the blur but when I was able to completely distinguish perfectly I saw Chiron sitting by my side reading a pile of books in his right. Hand he was in a wheel chair in a human size aspect. He looked at me with his worrying eyes and waited to see if I had anything to say. When he saw I didn't, he lacked the words himself. It took us a moment for the tense air to diminish, then he continued with his intrigue on the matter of what had just happened.
"I hope you are feeling better. I wish I could tell you you'll be okay but I honestly don't know what you... what just—"
"You don't know what I am..."I interrupted.
"No demigod has two god parents that would mean instant immortality and... Hades and Poseidon..." A chuckle left his mouth. "Not exactly a direction of theirs if you get me." His grin disappeared and he became serious again. "You don't happen to know anything do you?" I shook my head, but then remembered what happened while I lost conscious in the dinning pavilion. I told him every word except for the last part, of course. He looked down with a relaxed expression. "So it's nothing out of common. You might as well be a very scary surprise but none out of common. The gods screw up once again. At least we can rest assured nothing too bad will happen. I'm afraid you will have to carry an unwanted burden when the time comes, but we'll make sure you are ready. For now rest a bit more, at first light you should find that girl... Luna was it? I had to insist for her to go to sleep. She didn't want to leave your side. You have quite a keeper there." I wanted to tell him she wasn't my girlfriend but he waved his hand in front of me with a very calm and warm expression and I fell asleep again.
