Chapter 1 - Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility

The first incident was in Qing Qing City, China, where the first ever individual to be born and registered to have what is known as a Quirk. That baby was born with an extraordinary ability to radiate light. After that, reports of people having super powers popped up across the globe. No one really knew what was causing this Quirks to pop up out of thin air. However before long, the supernatural became the normality, dreams becoming a reality.

The world as we knew it became a superhuman society, where currently, 80% of the world's inhabitants has a Quirk, while you have the lower 20% who don't possess any of these uncanny abilities. Our cities looked like scenes from comic books, cities swirling with chaos and confusion, a newer profession dominated our collective consciousness. It is the age of Heroes.

With the rise of superpowers, came an explosive increase in criminal activity. While governments were trying to figure out how to reform laws with Quirks in mind, courageous people started performing heroic acts to keep our cities safe, protecting us against Villains who abuse their powers for evil. With overwhelming public support, Heroes found an official place as peacekeepers overseen by the governments. Those who perform the best were paid the most and got all the fame and glory. Their careers depended on their ability to stay in the spotlight.

Though while Heroes became an official profession through the years, the people who didn't possess any of these uncanny abilities would be dubbed as Quirkless. They couldn't participate in this particular profession as they would become mistreated for simply being different when it used to be the other way around. However, there were times when individuals decide to take matters into their own hands, whether it was an act of heroism or not, Vigilantes began to rise from the shadows to make a difference.

While Vigilantism could be seen as a form of crime, public opinion about them was always a mixed batch. It could be moments where they saved many others better than some Heroes at times, which can give a positive image or light about them. Or it could be times where it was negative, where they couldn't do better than the Heroes, but also cause more problems than good, which they then get labelled as Villains instead. There's always a fine line when it comes to acts of heroism, and the acts of villainy. The main importance of it all, is opening the eyes to the truth.

However, certain parts of the world have their Heroes and Villains, even organizations that could be part of the Criminal Underground. They all get by in their own ways, whether it be through legal or illegal means. As mentioned before, there is a fine line that doesn't make them all too different from one another.

Musutafu, a city located within Japan as it was like any other city that was located within Japan. Busy streets, some Villain activity sometimes, Heroes keeping the peace and good images. Many would get the gist of it as most would rather let the Heroes do their job and overly rely on them to incredible degrees. As for this particular Vigilante, that isn't completely the case.

On top of one of the buildings, wearing a dark black suit that has golden accessories, along with a golden hood, this Vigilante is commonly known as the Spider Vigilante, Spider Man. Most would refer to him as that mainly because of the symbol located on his chest in the shape of a spider.

He was currently looking patiently over the city as he could admire the view from where he stood. The buildings themselves didn't feel too tall, while they had a unique vibe when it came to their sizes. Some buildings were smaller than others, while some were taller than others, it added a layer of interest to when it came to architecture for cities over all. Most of the buildings could be confused as apartment complexes or perhaps some stores that were under some of the apartments themselves.

The Spider Vigilante couldn't help but admire this particular day as it was bright out. The sun sitting well over the horizon while the clouds added like small thin blankets in the sky. Though suddenly, he heard subtle radio sounds coming from his phone as he had a listen in.

Radio: "A group of armed thugs are getting away in a vehicle. Suspects are armed and heading southbound. Be advised to send them more northward towards the nearby Heroes."

He then turned his phone off for the time being as he readied himself.

Spider Man: "Alrighty then. Armed suspects in a car, probably stolen or owned by them. Police chasing them to lure them towards some Heroes. I think that'll be too much of a hassle for these guys. Time to get to work!"

He then leaped off of the building as he outstretched his right hand, firing a string of web that attached to a nearby building as he begun swinging himself higher into the air. He continued a routine of swinging from building to building, utilizing gadgets that are invisible on his wrists. He would mostly call them Web Shooters as the webbing is made out of some compounds he concocted together to create the similar thing.

After a few moments of swinging, he could hear the sounds of police sirens as he used his momentum to swing himself on top of a building to leap off and provide more momentum towards the situation. From above in the sky, he could see a black coloured vehicle as they were speeding away from three police cars. Though straight ahead of the runaway car, he could notice that some of the civilians were trying to get out of the way. However from what Spider Man could calculate in the moment, there's a high chance that they won't be able to make it in time.

He decides to take it into his own hands as he applied more momentum with his swinging in the air, doing an aerial flip as he shot webbing from both of his Web Shooters. He prepared himself like a slingshot as he fired himself towards the speeding vehicle. Upon landing on the hood of the car, the force making the car flip into the air. As Spider Man landed on the ground, he caught the car with his strength as he grunted a bit, needing to put the vehicle down as he put it back on its wheels.

Once he set the car down, he looked at the suspects in the vehicle, noticing them to be nothing but petty criminals as he sighed.

Spider Man *Thoughts*: "Wasted my time for these petty criminals? They seem like first time heisters..."

The criminals were visibly disorientated as they didn't know what happened. Though when they came to their senses, they tried to exit the vehicle, only for Spider Man to simply seal the doors shut with his webs.

Spider Man: "Sorry! It appears you got yourselves in a sticky situation!"

Spider Man then sighed to himself.

Spider Man *Thoughts*: "Yeah... I think I need to come up with newer lines..."

The police cars then came to a halt as the police exited their vehicles to approach the car. One of the officers clearly noticed Spider Man as he had a small smile on his face.

Officer: "Thanks for the help again Spider Man. We would've preferred sending you behind bars for doing this but..."

Spider Man: "Oh I know officer. I'm just simply helping the people. Need some help getting them unstuck?"

The officer gladly accepted the help considering that the webbing was becoming a bit of an issue for the other officers trying to remove it. So Spider Man walked up to the car, carefully forcing the door open as the officers quickly went in to arrest the criminals. One by one, the criminals were brought out in cuffs as all Spider Man could do was watch with his arms crossed. He honestly admired his own heroics at times.

While he wasn't really a pure Hero fanboy, he felt like he could accomplish things without too much trouble as long as he understood what he was up against. Though he knew he wasn't always like this as he felt like he got extremely lucky. About two years ago, he was simply a Quirkless kid who simply started in his Support Course Studies, only to end up being bitten by some sort of spider that granted him these capabilities.

Allowing him to have comparable strength to that of a spider, being able to crawl up walls, good reflexes, even a unique thing known as his Spider-Sense. He was able to get into crime fighting in no time whatsoever. It has been what he could describe as two whole years since then, and he has begun to make a name for himself. Though he isn't the type to express how he truly feels about his motivations, he knows that he is at least doing good for Japan, even if it is through Vigilantism. Some of the police treat him like a Hero due to him making their lives easier at times.

Though while watching over the criminals being taken into the back of police cars, he felt like he needed to leave. However, before he could, he heard a familiar sound that he could only describe as somebody moving at incredible speeds. As the sound suddenly came to a halt, dust settled around the area as when the dust completely dissipated, a man with cladded white armour and a black suit stood before the officers and the Spider Vigilante. Though Spider Man recognized him as the Turbo Hero, Ingenium. Though with enough research, he managed to uncover that this guy's real name is Tensei Iida of the prestigious Iida family who is part of a lineage of Heroes.

Ingenium: "Ah, Spider Man! I should've known it was you who took these ones down."

Ingenium said in a happy tone as his helmet made his voice sound somewhat muffled, but Spider Man clearly understood him.

Spider Man: "It was no issue at all Ingenium. Glad I could help out, but I thought you were busy as usual in Hosu?"

Ingenium: "I was honestly exploring Musutafu for some Villain activity as I was called in to take another Hero's place for a little while. I'll be returning to Hosu as soon as the other Hero is able to get back on duty. Now you should get going before the authorities arrive. You know how other Heroes are Spider Man."

Spider Man then chuckled a bit, appreciating the help from Ingenium.

Spider Man: "Thanks again Ingenium. You're honestly a lifesaver through and through! I got other businesses to attend to, so see ya around Turbo Hero!"

He then began to use his webs to swing away as he lifted himself into the air to get a move on. Underneath the mask, he had an honest smirk. Mainly because of the fact that when he did start his Vigilante gig, Ingenium was one of the first Heroes he got to work alongside with, and he was by far one of the best Heroes he could've asked for. As far he knew, Ingenium didn't mind helping out not just Heroes, but Vigilantes as well. The two had been working together side by side ever since Spider Man could remember as he was glad to have a close friend like him out on the field.

However, within a dark laboratory, a figure could be seen watching the camera footage of Spider Man stopping the car with his technique and strength, re-watching the footage carefully at points. While his figure couldn't be properly seen, he was analysing everything he could about the Vigilante as other screens showed still images of other moments when Spider Man does his heroism.

???: "Interesting... He decided to act out during the day this time..."

One of the many monitors then switched to a screen of another figure on the screen, though this was a live call. The call's picture remained anonymous.

??? *Caller*: "How goes the research Doctor?"

???: "Better than I would've hoped. Spider Man seems to be acting out on his own accord at times, whether it be during the night where he mostly does his things, or during the day at random points. Yet there's always one simple pattern. If he does appear during the day, it's always in Musutafu..."

??? *Caller*: "Impressive Doctor. However, will it be enough for the little science project yet?"

???: "No. I would need to study even more on how he operates in order to understand his patterns better. I would also need a blood sample to figure out his very own DNA, whether his Quirk could be rather... useful or not."

??? *Caller*: "Whether it be a Quirk or not, I expect results Doctor."

???: "Of course sir. You'll get your results soon enough..."

We then cut to the streets of Musutafu as we see a particular individual on a red and black motorbike. His hair being a red as his eyes give off a similar red colouration. His attire consisting of a black and red jacket with a red hood, a black t-shirt, black fingerless gloves with red accents, a black belt, red pants and black shoes. He currently had his hood up at the moment as he didn't want to draw attention to himself, pretending like as if he had a motorbike helmet on at the moment. This individual is none other than an 18 year old boy named Kurt Washington, a Third Year Support Course Student at the prestigious Hero School known as UA.

He in truth is actually the Vigilante known as Spider Man. However, he has been keeping this a secret from practically everybody, even his own mother as he doesn't want to worry anybody at all. He was also sure that if the people at UA knew, he would've probably been in serious trouble. Yet he couldn't just sit back and let people get hurt, it just wasn't in his nature.

However, due to him originally being born Quirkless, he would have to keep up the act as much as possible if it meant to hide his identity to the world. How was he supposed to explain that a simple spider bite gave him his powers in the first place? Many could call him crazy because of it, but he simply preferred to see it at face value as a truth. He knew that he can't get others involved in his gig, as it would simply endanger them unnecessarily.

He had spent the two years trying to research on how that spider bite gave him his capabilities, but he always ended up empty handed. He wanted to investigate Oscorp as it was the main company that he visited during his first year at UA two years ago. However, if he went to investigate directly, as himself, he would've been rather suspicious. If he went as Spider Man, it could be seen as a criminal act as he could end up labelled as a Villain. Both of those situations isn't exactly something he wants in the first place.

After a few minutes of riding around on his motorbike, he eventually reached the top of a particular hill that had an overlook of the entirety of Musutafu. As he came to a halt, he stood in front of the incredibly large gates of UA High. Considered as the number one high school for heroics, it's also considered as the Top Hero Academy in all of Japan. Although it has the typical Hero Course, it also has a Support Course, General Course and a Management Course. While Kurt mainly was part of the Support Course, he was familiar with some of the other Courses, as well as some of the promising future Heroes in the making.

Although he was excited to get back to his usual routine of just being himself, he forgot that he didn't have his UA Uniform with him today.

Kurt: "Oh crap! Did I forget my uniform at home again?!"

He quickly checked his school bag as he couldn't find the uniform he was looking for, making him sigh in defeat.

Kurt: "Oh boy... Teach is clearly going to be upset with me isn't he...?"

He knew who he was talking about as he quickly parked his motorbike nearby, making sure that it was in a safe place. He didn't want to have his motorbike get stolen while he was in class as then he wouldn't have a way of getting back home. So once he got off of the bike, he immediately slung his bag over his shoulder, strap resting tightly as he quickly began to make his way inside.

One thing he really despised from time to time was navigating his way around the campus. With the campus being rather large, obviously to fit all their students into their classes, he could understand the demand to fit all the necessities. However, apparently while other students of the Support Course's Third Years gets to go on with their usual studies, Kurt apparently was chosen to stick by the Support Course's Teacher known as Power Loader.

It sounds a bit rough, studying the usual work, while also becoming like an assistant to Power Loader. However, there was a particular rule that UA had that made it different in comparison to some other Hero Schools. This school doesn't adhere to traditional school methods, which allows the teachers to teach anyway they'd like. So the situation that Kurt falls into, is practically a teaching thing from the teachers' side.

Kurt at the moment was frantically looking around, trying to find who he was looking for as he knew he was fairly late.

Kurt *Thoughts*: "Come on come on! Where is he?! I know I was late, but am I really that late right now?!"

???: "Washington!"

Kurt immediately came to a halt as he turned around, only to look at the teacher he was thinking about this whole time. He knew him as the Excavation Hero, Power Loader. Although his real name is Higari Maijima, most of the teachers in this school prefer to be called by their Hero names. From what Kurt could see at the moment, from the expression that his lower half was making, it was clear that Power Loader was upset with him.

Kurt: "Oh... Hey Teach... I was actually looking for you..."

Power Loader: "You're late Washington. I've heard many great things about you and yet you somehow end up late when you're not usually late?"

Kurt: "Teach... I can explain... I had to help my mother early this morning and I got held up in traffic..."

Power Loader then sighed as he rubbed the back of his head a bit.

Power Loader: "Listen Washington. I know you're a bright kid and you probably have your own responsibilities, but I expect you to behave like a Third Year got it? School already started a week ago, and you're pulling stunts like this?"

Kurt: "I'm sorry Teach... I promise it won't happen again! I swear it!"

Power Loader: "It's alright kid... Just make sure you arrive on time, and not end up about an hour or two later. Got it?"

Kurt: "Of course. I'll try to be more responsible."

Power Loader: "Good. Now come with me, I need your help with something."

Power Loader then started to lead the way as Kurt could tell that Power Loader was rather strict. He could honestly respect that as some students do tend to misbehave and you would want what's best out of any student, even if it means to punish them accordingly. Though he doesn't really know why he is being asked to help when he probably could've asked anybody else. Though when they got to the main door of the Support Course room, Kurt was going to open the door when he felt a strange sensation in his head.

A sudden sense that he knew as the Spider-Sense as it mainly alerts him to whenever he is in danger. Yet it confused him on why his own brain decided to warn him now out of all times. He decided to shrug it off this time as he knows that UA is rather safe, so he opened the door, only for an explosion to occur from within the Development Studio. Smoke covered the entire doorway as Power Loader then had an annoyed expression as he couldn't believe that this one student did it again.

However as for Kurt, he felt like he hit his head against the concrete floor as he rubbed his head a bit, wincing a little in pain.

Kurt: "Ow..."

As he wanted to get up, he felt that something was on top of him, or to be specific, someone. When the smoke cleared better, he could finally see who was on top of him as he technically blushed at the position she was in on top of him. Considering that she was pressed tightly against him, as if he was used as a landing pad, he was trying his best not to have any naughty thoughts.

She seems to be a reasonably short girl with quite a mature body build, having salmon pink hair that is shoulder-length at best, as her hair is styled in thick dreadlocks. Her eyes are wide and sloped upwards with some notably long upper eyelashes, their irises green-yellow with a cross in the centre, making them look somewhat like scope lenses. Though for some reason, she seems to not be wearing the usual UA female uniform as she has a black tank top, a pair of gloves and even a pair of goggles, as her jacket appears to be tied around her waist.

She clearly had a happy expression on her face as she seemed to not mind this at all. She seemed to be rather happy about how her little mishap technically meant progress.

???: "Oh hi there! What are you doing down there?"

Kurt: "I was going to question why you're on top of me..."

Power Loader: "Hatsume! You need to get off of Washington right now! And what did I say about causing problems in my environment?"

The girl then blinked a few times, realizing what he meant as she immediately got up, not even bothering to dust herself off as she explained herself.

???: "I was working on a new baby! I might've accidentally mixed a few compounds that probably wasn't meant to mix..."

Power Loader: "That must've been the explosion then?"

???: "Yep! If there's no explosion, there's no progress!"

Power Loader: "This was the third time since you got in Hatsume!"

???: "I thought I told you to call me Mei? It's more simplistic and I don't have to go for honorifics.

She had a confident smile plastered on her face as Power Loader honestly questions how this girl has been on his nerves for what he could consider nearly two whole weeks. Though Kurt quickly got up, dusting himself off as he cleared his throat, trying to get their attention.

Kurt: "I apologize for interrupting, but what exactly happened here?"

Power Loader: "Oh right! Kurt Washington, meet Mei Hatsume. A First Year that started since last week in the Support Course. While I do appreciate her genius, she can be quite a handful..."

Mei: "Hey there Kurt! I heard from Power Loader that you are a Third Year here in the Support Course! Do you want to make babies together?!"

She immediately showed excitement in her eyes as Kurt immediately took that out of context, being incredibly confused and flustered.

Kurt: "W-What?!"

Power Loader: "She means making different inventions together. She tends to call her inventions her babies..."

Kurt: "Oh... Wait, why was I called here again Teach?"

Power Loader: "You see Washington, I brought you here as I figured you could help me keep Hatsume here in check."

Kurt then blinked a few times, looking at the excited Mei who was uncomfortably close to his face, making him feel quite awkward.

Kurt *Thoughts*: "Was I randomly given an entirely new responsibility because a Hero couldn't handle one person...?"

Kurt: "So, I was called in to assist you in keeping an eye on her...?"

Power Loader: "That's correct. I know she's about as bright as you. While she may have her quirks, she just needs the right guidance. So what do you say Washington?

Kurt: "Well..."

He could tell that Mei was incredibly excited to have a lab partner so to speak. He didn't want to upset anybody, nor did he want to cause any trouble. So the only choice he really had in this situation was to accept it as he smiled lightly.

Kurt: "Sure... I'll help her out..."

Mei's eyes immediately lit up like stars as she hugged him tightly, glad to have an assistant in making her inventions. Kurt was not really used to another girl suddenly hugging him, but he simply didn't do anything as he looked at Power Loader, who simply had a smile on his face.

Kurt *Thoughts*: "So is this what my father meant before...? With great power, comes great responsibility...? I don't feel the power part, but the responsibility is going to kill me, isn't it...?"

For some reason, Kurt felt like he might actually regret this decision he has made....
