Chapter 1
"Dad, are you serious," I huff as he misses the 3rd rabbit this week.
"I'm sorry sweetie," he says lowering his gun as birds fly out of the trees and the rabbit hops away. My stomach growled, only causing the frown on my dads face to become bigger.
"No, I'm sorry dad. I know it's been hard to focus lately," I whisper looking into his sorrowful eyes. The memories flood my brain. I try pushing them away, trying to forget everything. A single tear slides down my cheek, to my chin, and falls onto my shirt, where the dirty cloth soaks in the salty water drop. My dad embraces me in a hug. His chin was well above my head, as I was 5'2 and he was 5'10. I obviously got my height from my mom, giving I was 14 and pretty much done growing. He let's go of me and looks up to the sky.
"It's getting dark," he says using his hands to determine the time. The sun was starting to set and it was getting chilly out. We headed toward the old country house that was down the gravel road. It wasn't quite large, but it'd do. I opened the ripped screen door, then the wooden door behind it. The scent of old furniture filled my nostrils as I stepped inside, my father following me. I slipped off my dirty boots and threw them against the living room wall. I plopped onto the chair that was also known as my bed. The kitchen and living room were connected without a wall to separate them, so the room seemed larger than it was. My dad grabbed the bag from behind the old tv stand and sat down on the couch. He pulled open the bag and grabbed a nature valley granola bar. He tossed it to me as I happily caught it and ripped it open. I eagerly took a bite of it as he opened his own granola bar. I saved the other half of the granola bar, setting it on the table beside me.
"Thanks dad," I say. He lights the kerosene lamp and sets it in the kitchen. I lay my head back and slide the cover around my waist with my legs hanging off the edge of the chair. I shut my eyes and relaxed, hoping I'd get to sleep at least one night this week.
"I won again," I laughed as I put my last uno card down.
"You totally cheated," my mom smiled collecting the cards, "another round?"
"Yea, I'm going to go grab a bottle of water real quick, can you shuffle again," I asked innocently. She jokingly sighed and rolled her eyes. I went over the cooler that was under the tree to keep it cool, and grabbed one of the few bottles of water left. I started off toward the tree stump we were playing cards at, counting my steps so I wouldn't get lost. I turned the tree to see my mother with a dead walker next to her.
"Well, that's one less we have to deal with," I joked, "have you even shuffled yet?" She brought her hands up from her waist, and they were covered in blood. "Mom," I asked. I crawled around the stump to see her t-shirt was torn open and a bite had been taken out of her flesh.
"Autumn," my mom smiled, "I was the real winner." Her eyes fluttered shut, and her body went limp. One tear slipped down my cheek, two tears, three, and they just kept on flowing down like a river. Thoughts swirled in my head. Emotions overwhelmed me. Sadness, anger, regret. Everything seemed to be colliding and slowly destroying me. I couldn't breathe. My words were hitched in the back of my throat.
"Mom," I asked, "mom?" The walkers started surrounding me, one grabbed my shoulders and started shaking me, snarling and biting at my face. He continued to shake and shake me.
"Autumn," my dad was shaking me awake, "c'mon." My vision was still somewhat blurry and I was drowsy. It was dawn outside, and a cool breeze blew threw the door. Wait, why was the door open? I rubbed my eyes to clear my vision then turned around.
"Hello," the stranger at the kitchen table nodded at me.
