"How much trouble are you in?" Chanyeol asked the moment Baekhyun stepped out of the principal's office.
Baekhyun sighed and wound his arm around Chanyeol's waist as he replied, "I have detention. Same as you after school."
Chanyeol sighed. "Oh my god, I'm so relieved. And I'm sorry again for getting you into trouble," Chanyeol muttered.
"Don't worry about it," Baekhyun muttered. "Besides, we only have twenty minutes before school ends and I for one don't feel much like going to class . . . How about you, Channie?"
A shiver traveled the length of Chanyeol's spine at the new nickname, a slow mischievous smile curved the corner of his lips as he whispered, "Didn't we just get into trouble for doing exactly what we're thinking?"
Baekhyun laughed and grabbed Chanyeol's hand as he replied, "Yes. But this time we won't get caught," Baekhyun singsonged as he dragged Chanyeol from the office behind him.
Chanyeol laughed. "So devious!"
Their detention lasted for an hour, and sooner than a pin could drop, they were climbing into Baekhyun's car and going home together. When Baekhyun pulled into the driveway, he noticed that every single car was accounted for.
He bit his bottom lip nervously and mumbled, "Shit. This probably won't be good."
"What do you mean?" Chanyeol asked, who was unaccustomed to the full driveway significance that always inevitably lead to a grounding.
Baekhyun sighed. "The whole family's home. Surely you remember what that means . . .?"
Chanyeol cringed and nodded as he replied, "Lots of yelling."
Baekhyun nodded. "Yup. Maybe if you come in with me they won't yell? Sorry, I know that sounds like I'm using you but . . . that's because I kinda am," Baekhyun muttered sheepishly. "Do you mind?"
Chanyeol chuckled humorlessly and leaned forward to quickly kiss Baekhyun's cheek. "Not at all," he said before climbing out of the car.
Baekhyun smiled before climbing out too. He playfully ran around his car and hopped into Chanyeol's arms as he grinned and said, "Come on, baby, be my metaphorical shield."
Chanyeol laughed as Baekhyun lead him towards the house. When they walked inside, the living room looked like an intervention with Baekhyun's parents sitting beside each other with their hands clasped together. Sehun was there too, along with Luhan . . . Hurt stabbed at Baekhyun's heart as he realized how his parents had found out so quickly.
Baekhyun's father stood up when they entered the room, his face closed off as he gestured to the only vacant chair and quietly muttered, "Baekhyun, please, sit down."
"What is this about?" Baekhyun asked but already knowing.
"We'll discuss it in a moment. Chanyeol, you can sit beside Luhan," his father said.
Baekhyun bristled and he quickly sprung from his seat as he half-yelled, "No he will not!" Before he reached for Chanyeol's wrist and forced him into the chair. Baekhyun planted himself half on Chanyeol's lap as he said, "There. Now we can start."
Baekhyun's mother sighed. "Baekhyun, sweetheart, do you realize why we're here?"
Baekhyun laughed humorlessly and rolled his eyes before replying, "Of course, I do, mother. My ex-best friend ratted me out!" Baekhyun yelled as his temper quickly rose.
Chanyeol furrowed his brow and touched Baekhyun's back, trying his best to calm him down. "You shouldn't yell at your mom," Chanyeol whispered.
Baekhyun sighed. "I know . . . I'm sorry, mom. I'm just upset. And I know what we did was inappropriate but as I already told the principal, I won't take it back. I love what I have with Chanyeol and every moment no matter where it happens is special to me. So if your going to ground me, that's okay, just don't take Chanyeol anyway from me . . ." Baekhyun whispered.
His parents exchanged glances before looking at Baekhyun. "Son," his father said. "We won't make you stop seeing Chanyeol, but if you continue to act recklessly we'll have no choice. You are grounded though for a week and you'll only be able to go to school and straight home. Understood?"
Baekhyun bit his bottom lip and glanced over his shoulder at Chanyeol, tears slowly filled his eyes as he turned back around to his parents and whispered, "Please? C–can you wait to ground me? Please?"
His parents exchanged glances once again before his mother sighed and softly replied, "Okay. But we mean it, Baekhyun, no more getting into trouble."
Baekhyun nodded. "I won't!" Then he stood up and grabbed Chanyeol's hand, before he went upstairs though, he shot a harsh glare Luhan's way before running up the stairs.
"I can't believe Luhan did that to me!" Baekhyun cried the moment the door had closed behind them.
"How can you be sure it was Luhan?" Chanyeol asked.
Baekhyun bit his bottom lip and sighed before muttering, "I can't, but it seems kinda obvious. Don't you think?"
"Then don't start throwing blame until you know for sure," Chanyeol responded.
Baekhyun nodded. "Okay. I'll just have to talk to him tomorrow then . . ."
Chanyeol reached out and clasped Baekhyun's waist, his lips brushing across his jaw as he muttered, "Sounds like a plan . . ."
Baekhyun grinned and wound his arms around Chanyeol's neck as he kissed him, both of them falling back onto the bed.
* * *
The next morning at school Baekhyun was in the photography room waiting to ambush Luhan. Photography wasn't his first class, but it was his favorite and life long ambition and love. And Baekhyun knew he started everyday with his hands on a film strip.
A few people came and went, never staying for too long. They threw curious looks Baekhyun's way, probably finding it odd that he as laying on his back on a desk with his legs crossed in the air and using his backpack as a pillow. But Baekhyun ignored them all as he focused on what he was going to say to Luhan —- both his arguments involving tears.
The next time the door opened Baekhyun peeked his eyes open. It was Luhan. He uncrossed his legs, the motion drawing Luhan's attention as Baekhyun sat up.
Luhan gasped and covered his hand over his heart, his breathing uneven with surprise. "Jesus, Baek! You just rose up like the dead!"
"Was it you who ratted me out yesterday?" Baekhyun demanded as he cut straight to the point.
Luhan shrugged off his bag and crossed his arms. "No. It wasn't me."
"But you were there at the pool! And then you were at my house waiting to ambush me!"
"Oh! You mean like you did just now!" Luhan yelled back. He took a breath, his eyes closing and his fist clenching and unclenching before he calmly muttered, "And no, it wasn't me who told your parents."
Baekhyun pursed his lips. "Then who?"
"Who do you think?" Luhan muttered.
"I . . . Mom and dad were the only people there. And Sehun but he . . ." Baekhyun's eyes widened as the realization sunk in. "He didn't!"
Luhan furrowed his brow and crossed his arms. "He did, Baek. He's mad at you or something. He told me he was tired of your shit," Luhan said.
"What have I done to him!"
Luhan shrugged and held up his hands as he said, "Sorry. I'm just the messenger. But maybe you should talk to him . . ."
"Yeah. Right after I punch his fucking face . . ." Baekhyun trailed off as he grabbed his backpack. "Sorry, Lu!" Baekhyun called before the door closed behind him.
Baekhyun walked briskly towards the lunchroom as his face practically screamed for people to get out of his way. They watched curiously as he walked by, never before have they seen their usually mellow and level headed student body president spit fire from his eyes.
They were actually seeing a lot of new things from Baekhyun. Although people knew he liked to go into the football locker room before games and party with friends, this Baekhyun they saw before them now was completely new. This new Baekhyun was someone who had sex in the craziest of places; who cheated on his boyfriend with a childhood friend; who fought with his best friend; who freaked out when his lover collapsed in libraries; who defied adults. This new Byun Baekhyun was unpredictable and free.
Baekhyun spotted Sehun sitting at their lunch table and his hand shot out to his shoulder, jerking him around on his chair as he yelled, "Why did you rat me out to Mom and Dad!? It wasn't your place to tell them!"
Sehun smacked Baekhyun's hand away and quickly stood up as he shot back, "Because you've been stupid and reckless ever since Chanyeol came back! It's like you plan on dying with him!"
Smack!
"Don't talk about him like that!" Baekhyun screamed, his hand burning from the impact of smacking his brother across the face.
Sehun gasped and stumbled back from the impact, his face twisted in pain as he clutched his cheek and jaw. Baekhyun could easily see the hurt in his eyes, but he didn't regret hitting his brother —- not in the moment at least.
Sehun's hand fell away from his face as he began to speak. "See. That's exactly what I mean . . ." Sehun quietly muttered. "You're not yourself Baek. You cheated on Daehyun, who you've been close friends with since you were a freshman when just this year it became more and you started dating. You cut class and disappear for hours and come home either happy or in tears. You're erratic and impulsive and the only thing that seems to matter to you anymore is Chanyeol. You're selfish...." Sehun trailed off.
"And I don't want to talk to you until the old Baekhyun returns," Sehun said before walking away, leaving Baekhyun standing in the middle of the cafeteria with everyone staring at him.
