20. Old friends
"It is time for a conversation mr Morningstar." Lieutenant Powell put a hand on Lucifer's shoulder.
This occurred a couple of days later.
The archangel Michael had offered a feather of his own to heal the bleeding Lucifer on the balcony of his villa but then with a gust of air had disappeared. Lucifer had huffed indignantly but the sister had pushed him back on a chair while telling him to man up and then with a bright light had fixed his wound in the same manner Lucifer had healed Chloe.
The amorous mood had turned into a family reunion instead, something that Chloe had actually enjoyed. The supernatural entity had somehow not shocked her like you might believe, but she had revelled in the human relationship between the angels.
A couple of days had passed since then and here in the precinct Lucifer had followed the Lieutenant into her office. He sat down in the visitors chair in the her office. His legs were crossed and his hands rested on his knee. For a moment he noticed how the woman across the desk studied the ring on his finger, but then shook it off and seemed to put a mask up, finishing it up with a smile. "So mr Morningstar, how come you became a civilian consultant to the LAPD?"
The question surprised him and before he answered, he took his time to study the woman on the other side of the desk. There was some sense of familiarity with the woman in front of him though he was certain that she wasn't any former sexual partner of his. He took pride in remembering every human he had been doing the dirty with.
He told her the story of Delilah who had been shot and how he had been part of finding the guilty. Swiftly he left out his threatening part in solving the case, and also how the bullets had bounced off him. While getting to know Chloe he had learned how much honesty humans needed and how much they could take before rationalizing it off.
The blonde woman studied him as if she had the ability to detect honesty. "I just had to look into you since your record states that Lucifer Morningstar didn't exist more that five or so years ago."
"On the earthly plane no," was his obvious answer.
"I will look into your past mr Morningstar."
"Be my guest," he answered with a smile. "I might surprise you." This conversation was going nowhere and to his own surprise he wasn't in the mood to find out the woman's desire. "If there is nothing more, I'd like to continue with the homicide at hand Lieutenant,"
She excused him and with a sense of vexation he left her office.

It was in the car heading out of town with Chloe next to him that he came to think of the conversation with the Lieutenant again. "When you found out that I had no records beyond those odd five years back, what did you do," he asked Chloe with an honest curiosity.
"Are you back in the conversation with the Lieutenant?"
"Hmm, it vexes me."
Chloe smiled and leaned back. "I fabricated a past for you."
"You did what?"
"Well, not until I knew everything, but then I filled in a plausible past for you." She shrugged and gave the surprised devil a smile. "In case anyone as her would look into you." She knew it was the wrong thing to do and his scutinizing look just now made her reconsider it. "I have contacts," she defended herself with. The intrusion in his records had been discrete and not easily found.
He kept her in his sight. "I don't know if I'm supposed to be abhorred or impressed."
"Be grateful," she teased.
"I most certainly am."
The request for Chloe and Lucifer to attend the police conference in San Diego had surprised them both. For two days they were assigned to stay together here and it felt like far from punishment. Two hotel rooms were exchanged into one where they wouldn't be disturbed. Hadn't it been the lack of time, they had thoroughly enjoyed that. Instead they walked to a conference room just a few stairs down.
A woman welcomed them and handed them each a folder with the program, a notepad and pen and a few other necessities.
"Chloe Decker?"
Chloe turned towards the woman who had called her out.
"Jessica," Chloe said surprised while finding an old schoolmate standing there with a big smile on her face. They had never been friends, but far from enemies. "What are you doing here?"
"I have-" she stopped and turned her gaze on Lucifer. Somehow she managed to snap out of it and return to the current conversation. "I am one of the guest speakers." Again she turned her attention towards Lucifer.
"Guest speaker huh?" Chloe felt very annoyed by the woman's interest in her partner. "So, which is your post then?" She flipped through the program. Chloe wasn't interested in anything but catching her attention.
"Err... Toxicologi past and present," she answered distracted.
"We'll be listening attentive, so we better get us really good seats." Lucifer offered Chloe his arm and she wasn't late to take it.
"It was nice to meet you Jessica." That was not completely true, but she did not want the woman drooling over Lucifer, annoying both of them, so they fled. Quickly they left the area without looking like they where criminals followed by a complete department of polices.
"Ew," Lucifer made an accordingly guttural sound effect. "Sometimes I wish I could turn this off." He gestured along the suit jacket and Chloe pressed her brows together in confusion. "The carnal appeal," he exclaimed annoyed. "Not that it affects you, freak." He gestured to one of the chairs in the back of the auditorium and took his seat next to her.
Chloe laughed. "Oh you affect me, but in a deeper way."
His brows raised upwards while a pleased smile widened on his face.
"Now, who's the freak?"
"She is!" Lucifer pointed over his shoulder. "Meeting old friends isn't always the blissful reunion we wish."

After the conference the two partners took their exit swiftly and found a nearby restaurant.
There were a few things that had caught their attention at the conference and even if Lucifer rather discuss personal matters when they had a few days away from every day work.
Chloe liked the carefree Devil she had in front of her. He was joking while flipping through the menu. "Oh look, they have Devil-may-care ice-cream, let's take some back to the hotel," he suggested while wiggling his eyebrows very uncharacteristic. Chloe laughed. "Or some Devils food cake which is, dare I say devilishly delicious," he joked Chloe's amusement.
The waiter stopped by and they placed their order and sipped on the red wine in their glasses.
"Hi Chloe." The couple startled as a chair was pulled out by their table and Chloe's old friend plopped down on it.
Chloe's head turned slowly towards Lucifer, "Oh look, it's Jessica," she exclaimed with a tone that tried to sound enthusiastic, followed with a smile that didn't manage to fool anyone either. Anyone but Jessica that is.
"So I heard that you got Evelyn Powell as a new Lieutenant," the old friend of Chloe's said, unfazed by their lack of enthusiasm.
That got both Chloe and Lucifer's attention. "Do you know her," Chloe asked curious.
"I thought with everything going on in LA they would go for a woman with better leader skills."
"What do you mean?"
"Yeah, I worked with her after she turned Lieutenant and I don't know, she's meek." The woman distracted kept trying to get Lucifer's attention but he kept avoid eye contact. "She's shy and a bit timid in my opinion." She frowned.
"Shy," Chloe questioned surprised, that was far from the impression she had got from the new lieutenant and without much thought she said so.
"Yes, Eve, Evelyn," she corrected, "has never been a leader kind of girl, so I was surprised when she got her first lieutenant position in LA of all places." Jessica continued telling them anecdotes from high school about a shy and careful girl that was hard to picture.
Just as the waiter arrived with their dinner Chloe pulled her phone out, feigning a text message. "Oh no," she said out loud.
"What is it?" Lucifer felt worried.
"It's from Ella," she lied. She had planned on blaining the unaware Dan for the interruption, but decided on Ella. "She calls to remind us of the videoconference in fifteen minutes." She turned towards the waiter. "Is it possible to have this to go?"
The waiter murmured something but returned with the plates to the kitchen.
"It was so nice to see you again, we have a double homicide that needs our attention," she lied swiftly to the disappointed old friend.
Chloe got to her feet and Lucifer followed suit. They received their take-out dinner, paid with a generous tip and then got out of there.
