31. The Truth
Days passed one after the other and Vijay become quite busy with his work since some renovation work is being done in the Hotel and he has to look after that. I am passing my days peacefully doing what I am want to do, reading books, and wondering what might have happened to my parents. Ever since this thought came to my mind, I can't put myself out of it.
I thought that there's a possibility that maybe I am even a north Indian, or anywhere from the southern states and so on. So then Vijay took the first step and called Sharath's mom and she said that she doesn't know anything about my parents but still having the adoption certificate. Vijay said he will get that after finishing his work.
Even I didn't realize it until Vijay gave this point that maybe they are having it to show to me if I ask them any kind of share from the properties. I believe that point which he said.
There will be a stage in your life where you will see all the truthness around you. When I don't know the truth, I never imagined they would all change this way. I never thought those whom I considered as my family will act like they never know me because I believed everything is true, but every truth will turn into a lie after a certain point.
I am not surprised because even siblings will no longer share the bond forever then how can I expect them to act as actual relatives. You can never say a person will remain the same, they want you one day and if you're not needed they will never think a single moment before dumping you. They never wanted me and that's why they have cut all ties and so I did the same, they are not needed to me anymore, I thought heaving a sigh in relief.
That time, I got a call from Vijay, it's already late and thought why he's calling instead of coming home. Vijay informed me that he's stuck in traffic and asked me to have dinner. I agreed and sat on the dining chair. I had the tablets after the dinner and rested my head on the dining table looking at the open door.
After we had a checkup in the hospital, we found that I am pregnant with twins. The happiness I had at the moment can't be explained in words. For the first time, I cried just because I am too happy. This has never happened to me. As we grow up, we are not only facing new situations but also new emotions which we never felt while growing up. I am happy that my life is teaching me a different type of lesson which I refused to accept before. When I was young I thought being bold and stubborn are cool but now I think being calm and forgiving is cool too.
My father's demise made me realize this simple thing that, nobody in this world escapes alive, we are predestined to stay here for some time and when the moment comes you can't avoid your fate. As you grow old, people who are close to you starts to fade away, then one day you will be there too, just like a season. In this, You can't hold anything as your even your emotions.
From there, I learned to forget the worst things and to be quiet in the places where you should express your anger. There's no use in showing too many emotions, maybe I am turning like Vijay, but I like this way. There are so many things in life to feel happy about and I chose to feel gratitude for whatever I am having. If this isn't great then I don't know what will be?
I drowsed with a smile having this thought, and I opened my eyes when the calling bell rang. It's Vijay when I opened the door. "Am I disturbed your sleep?" he asked when I left a big yawn.
"No, I was just taking a nap," I smiled.
His hands carried some cover and I was so eager whether he bought that certificate.
"Go and sleep, I will lock the door," he said.
"Wait, did you bought that certificate?" I asked.
"Here it is," he gave me the cover. I immediately opened it and saw the details in excitement. My father has adopted me from a government hospital in Coimbatore. I was just two years old at that time, but as I guessed there are not many details about my biological parents.
"The only way we can find is by going there, tomorrow," Vijay said when I am looking at it.
"Tomorrow?" I exclaimed because compared to me he's so eager. He's a man of his words.
"Yeah, then how can we find them?" "Are you coming?" he asked.
"Yes, of course," I smiled.
"Go and sleep now," he patted my cheeks.
I felt excited and I couldn't sleep. I asked Vijay, "What if both them are death like in disease or accident or whatever?"
"Then pay your last respect and forget about them," he said looking at me.
"What if they are alive?"
"Well, here comes the problem," "We have to look in two ways, whether they are guilt for abandoning you or not."
"What if they are guilty? What you will do?"
"Hmm, if I was in your position, I would never search them because they are absent in the major part of my life and their sudden presence is not going to affect me in any way," he said.
"But they are your parents right," I asked and for that, he laughed.
"They are not my parents," he said.
"I know, I am just asking you," I corrected to get an answer from him because I don't know what I have to do if I suddenly going to meet them. As much I am angry with them, I can't show it if they are guilty.
Heaving a sigh, Vijay looked in my eyes, "If they are guilty, maybe you can try to mend the bond. If their reasons are genuine then just forgive, because you're not experienced anything bad because of them," he told and I was so surprised by what he said. Forgive? Even Vijay can utter those words. Oh god! This is what his actual character. He's been acting like he doesn't have any more meticulous feelings but he's such a good man.
"Am I right?" he asked and sifted back to our conversation.
"Yes, but what if they are not guilty?"
His eyes narrowed, "Kill them" he said.
My eyes widened in shock, "What?"
He laughed, "I am just joking. I don't know what should I do, I will get angry for sure and it's too hard for me to walk out of the situation without reacting," he said and I nodded.
"Whatever they are, just remember you have me, maybe you're not required for all those people, but for me, you're so much needed and our kids want a wonderful person like you," he told and kissed my forehead and I smiled having happy tears.
There's nothing I am going to lose in this, I never had them and even if I don't have them in the future I am not going to be sad. As Vijay said, I have him and that's enough.
The next morning, we got ready to go to that hospital. After having breakfast, I prayed to God to give me the mental strength to accept everything which I am going to find out.
Locking the door behind, I went to the car. Before I get in, Vijay held my hand, "Do you want to do this?"
I looked him in confusion, "We don't know what is on the other side, we might find out something that we won't like so think for one last time,"
"Yes, let's try," I smiled, 'Nothing is going to break me."
He accepted my answer and started the car. We went to the hospital and I was quite nervous about whether we will get an answer or not. When we asked where we can get the details to one of the people that Vijay knows in the hospital, we headed to the registration department.
Vijay told him about why we came here and showed the adoption certificate to a middle-aged attendant but he said that he cannot do it now and asked us to come after a month. I was upset, it's just a data which they probably know where it will be.
Vijay asked me to wait in the car as he spends a few thousand to get the details when the attendant asked for some commission. He came to me with an address and with a big smile.
"This man, he's the one who left you in this hospital," he said pointing the name in the document in which he has taken a photo.
"Selvaraj," I spelled and saw the address which is somewhat near to our house.
"He mentioned that your parents are dead,"
"Oh," I was quite uncomfortable to hear that.
"But we should go there and ask him what happened," Vijay said and I gave a nod.
He drove to that address and I don't have any faith that he will be still here. Vijay went to that house which is newly built and I know we are not going to get anything. The house honor was a young man and when Vijay said that we are here for a man named Selvaraj, he doesn't have any idea what we are talking about. Then he went inside to bring his father to answer our questions because previously this house along with few other houses was left for rent for more than twenty years. Recently they have rebuilt the houses as a single home.
I prayed that he should know about this man Selvaraj when Vijay asked about that... "Yes, I know Selvaraj. He lived along with his family here and he's a distant relative to me,"
Vijay smiled at me that we have successfully neared them.
"He mentioned this address while leaving me in the hospital and I want to find out about my parents," I said to that old man.
"Oh, you're that child. I remember when Selvaraj bought you here. He said that you're a relative's daughter and then I never heard about you," he said.
"When they left this place?" Vijay asked.
"It's ten or twelve years back after Selvaraj died his wife and son left to Madurai which is their native,"
"What he died?" Vijay asked.
"Yes, he died in an accident, it's so sad that he's not too old to die," that old man said.
"Do you know where his wife?" Vijay asked before I could.
"Yes, I know well," that positive answer made us smile.
After getting the address, Vijay and I came out of the house after saying a big thank you.
"I think this lady knows about your parents," Vijay said driving home.
"Yes, I think the same,"
"Why did my parents gave me to this Selvaraj?"
"We should find out that,"
"So we are going to Madurai?"
"Yes, even if you don't want to, I have to find it," he smiled, "Because this is so interesting."
I chuckled, "So when we are going?"
"Tomorrow," he answered.
"Tomorrow!"
"Yeah, do you have any other important business than this?"
"Okay," I agreed.
That night again I couldn't sleep because it doesn't let me. I don't know whether it is fear or excitement or nervousness, all I wish is this shouldn't hurt me.
We got ready early in the morning so that we can reach the place within the afternoon, Vijay drove the car and he used to do this a lot of times whenever he wants to visit his Madurai branch so he knows all short cuts and the good thing is he owns a house there.
We took some break in the middle and also talked about what must have happened to them. Though it's not good for me to travel at this time I have to do this and I can never sit in the house when I know they must be here.
It's almost evening when we reached that address, everybody in that area knows Irudayarani as she owns a small farm there. She's a Christian and I thought whether my parents are Christians too?
As soon as I saw that lady I felt something strange inside me, that resemblance. And she had the same confused face when she saw me.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"I... I" I couldn't speak and my eyes welled in tears and Vijay only told everything and hearing that she started crying hugging me. I can't help but cry too because I think she's someone close to me. The people who are near the house where all seeing us and her daughter in law came out in surprise.
"Are you my mother?" I asked her pulling out from the hug.
"No, you're my sister's daughter," she cried.
"Now where is she?" I asked but she refused answer while being so emotional.
"Is she dead?" I asked and she nodded, yes.
"How? What happened to her?"
She finally stopped crying and said, "How could I tell you this, let's go inside and talk," she told and I went with her deeming there must be an awful past which I shouldn't have chosen to know in the first place.
