21. The Runaway
Arlo had given Cillian his time to explain to her why he snuck into her bedroom. Her heart skipped at his words because he told her Owen had called him and left him a clue. He said that after he recollected himself, he gathered his senses and began searching for the man that Owen told him about, Phillip Riley. He was connected in some way to Owen's disappearance and his name might hold the key to finding his best friend who was clearly still alive.
The man was known as a notorious mobster who seemed to have been associated with the mob that Cassandra Anthony was allegedly said to be in connection with. Cillian said that the man's face was familiar and that he's seen him before at the precinct, he looked as though he was there on business, but Cillian couldn't seem to understand what could possibly lead to him being connected to Owen's alleged kidnap.
"What are you going to do?" she asked.
"I can't tell Cassandra. She'd tell me to stay low and to not do anything reckless that would cause a spectacle."
"She's right, but if you're not gonna tell her, then what are you going to do?"
His eyes were serious and she was nervous. "Do you trust me, Arlo?"
"If I say yes, will I regret it?"
"Yes." He didn't sugarcoat it and she didn't mind. He was being truthful and straight to the point.
She rested her hand on top of his. "What are we going to do?"
"We're going to leave town." She squeezed it, her eyes burning with worry. "We need to find Owen. No one will listen to me or you, so, are you in?" Arlo was about to do something stupid because at that moment when he asked her if she would run with him, she saw him for who he truly was, a lost boy trying to rescue his own life before he fell too deep. She nodded and stood up. "I'll pack a bag, did you drive?"
His eyes filled with water and he cleared his throat before he spoke. "Yeah, three houses down. We need to hurry, have you ever scaled a building before?"
"No, but I'm about to learn." She grabbed a backpack from her closet and began stuffing light clothes and underwear inside, she took her wallet, charger, cell, Taser and a leather jacket and cap, then turned to face Cillian—the boy she was about to run off with to find the real truth to Owen Klum's disappearance and to hopefully save a life. She sighed and stood up. "Let's go." He smiled and walked over to the window. They looked down and Arlo took a deep breath, her vision blurring slightly. "I'll understand if you can't do it." She glanced at him. "I'll be fine. We have to find Owen." A small smile took his lips and he bent and pressed a kiss to her forehead. "Come on then, take your time, use the side of the house here to make your way down." She stepped out of the window and without incident they made it to the ground and then the teens made their way towards Cillian's car, making sure to look as non-suspicious as possible. Once they got to the car they got in and put her bag on the back seat. She grabbed his sleeve. "We need Taro."
"What?" he couldn't believe her words?
"Taro's dad is a locksmith, she's good at picking locks, and she's resourceful. Please, Cillian." He took a moment to consider it then gave in when he looked back into her soft brown eyes.
"Alright, but we can't have her ruin the plan okay."
"Deal, turn down here." she dialed her number as Cillian drove to the address Arlo gave him. Taro was momentarily surprised by the new turn of the leaf by her friend, but she agreed to come along and got a bag ready to escape with her friends. "Thank you so much for coming Ro."
"No problem Lo—besides, do you really think that Owen is still alive?" she asked leaning forward between the front seats.
Cillian shrugged. "We can only hope so. I recorded the phone call and it was his voice and he sounded like he was in danger. I couldn't sit around and do nothing while everyone in town kept accusing me of killing my best friend. I need to save him and bring him home."
"To clear your name?" Taro asked, eyes focused on him.
He shook his head. "He's my best friend. I don't care what they do to me. You don't understand what it's like to have the one person who's always believed in you just taken away... when he called, he sounded scared and hurt and I just wanna bring him back home. Someone took him for a reason and for that, I'm truly scared for his life." Taro nodded in understanding.
"I'm sorry Cillian." She said after a few seconds of silence.
"It's fine."
"Hey Cillian, where are you taking us?" Arlo was looking out before them as they went off the main road onto a dirt road where the path was clearly worn indicating frequent usage. "This is where Owen's parents moved to after he went missing."
"That's strange... why?" he shrugged.
"No clue, we barely spoke after he went missing."
"Um, not to sound like I'm against this, but you do know what time it is, right?" Taro pointed out, "They're probably asleep, it's after one in the morning."
"I bet, they're not. I need to ask them a few questions before we get going so please bear with me." The girls exchanged a look and nodded as they sat back. The tall grass parted into a bright opening where a flock of wooden houses stood in a circular formation, almost like it was a private community hidden away from the regular society. It made Arlo and Taro suspicious of what lay ahead. Cillian pulled up infront of a decent looking house, that looked as if it held only one bedroom and could accommodate only two or one persons. Cillian turned off the car then turned towards them. "This is where the Klum's moved to." He turned to Arlo, "can you please get in the backseat and keep your heads down. I don't want them to know that I'm with anyone else. Is that okay?"
She nodded. "Yeah, I got you." She did as told and climbed into the back from the front seat and sat next to Taro, where they lowered themselves. He handed Arlo the keys. "Just in case, hold onto these. If I don't come back out in ten minutes' drive off and call the cops. If those lights go off, then get out of here as soon as possible, you hear?"
Arlo grabbed his arm, eyes in a panic which mimicked Taro's. "Cillian, just how dangerous are they?"
"Owen's father isn't happy about his disappearance, and I haven't seen them for a very long time, so please, just do as I said okay." He kissed her gently then took her hand off of his arm.
"Okay, please be careful." Cillian got out of the car with a smile and Arlo locked it.
"How much do you trust him?"
"Enough to know that he isn't the suspect here. Owen called him and he told him a name that belonged to a mobster and he sounded frantic. He records all of his phone calls. He played back the phone call of Owen and it was heartbreaking, he sounded so scared, Taro." Her eyes were glassy at the memory of hearing him scramble about and talk in a hurry as if he were being chased. "I trust that Cillian wouldn't betray me."
Taro sighed softly. "I only came because I trusted your judgment and I know you aren't the person who'd do this kind of thing... that and I wanted to make sure that you were protected. I can fight, you can't." The girls giggled and Arlo gave Taro a side hug. "Thank you. I believe that he's innocent, his eyes don't say that he's guilty—no, my heart isn't leading me, my head is. Owen is still missing, and no one is looking for him, they're all too busy trying to convict Cillian."
"I believe you, Lo."
"Thank you, Ro."
Cillian walked up to the house with his fist hesitating to knock the door. He swallowed hard then rapped three times at the door.
