Chapter 3
What Andi Saw

ANDI LEE forgot the two most important things for a detective to carry during a night of trick or treat, her magnifying glass to spot the bright houses in Sacramento, and her jack-o-lantern bucket to fill up with Halloween candy.

Andi's eyes suddenly widened.

"Wait! I almost forgot!" Andi called out to the two girls behind her. She sat down on the floor, kicking off her leather boots and red breakfast-themed socks.

"Oh, fudge sticks." She whispered to herself as she fixed the buttons on her long brown coat and bravely put up her collar. Andi gulped at the thought of her closet and took the largest breath.

"Not the closet." She groaned.

She lifted herself up from the floor and began to put a closed fist up.

"On count of three, Andi, we're gonna run up those stairs, get that magnifying glass and jack-o-lantern and run back safe from that closet."

"O-one." Andi's knees began to tremble. She raised a finger even though she could not properly utter the word one.

"T-t-two."

"Three!"

She braced herself, hugging every inch of her own body as tightly as her small fingers could bear.

Andi ran with lightning speed up the hollow wooden staircase. Her bare feet nervously swept the dust on each step as she climbed before she pulled her feet to a hard stop.

She was facing the door that led up to her dark and tiny room. It was a white wooden door with a bright silver metal knob.

She hesitated at first.

Andi knew that in any moment she could be in danger.

But soon enough the girl moved forward. Andi slowly tried to pull it with the least force, no more than her small pointer finger.

And like the sinister wind had preferred to accompany Andi inside her room, the door creaked like a dying soul and swung open.

She tiptoed one step at a time as she entered the room, making sure of her every move, and there it was, at the farthest side from her front door: her closet.

Andi continued to walk as silently as possible towards the closet. She had met halfway until the little girl fought the urge to screech in pain.

Her heart had vigorously pounded inside her little chest as her right foot had felt like it had been stung underneath her.

"Ouch. It hurts." She cried.

Andi looked down on the floor to see what had caused her small foot to throb so badly.

And placed on the letter A of her rubber mats was a green lego brick.

The legos themselves seemed harmless, they were nothing but a pain in the foot. But the more she thought of it, the more it seemed unusual.

Right, Andi never played with her legos.

She looked around her room, before noticing that the toy blocks were scattered across the whole floor.

Andi closed her eyes shut. The scene had seemed eerily familiar, more than a hundred times over. It was pitch black, but most of all it was dead quiet.

It was a horrifying sight for twelve-year-old Andi, knowing that the only thing the little girl could see was the light that broke through her painted glass window and the only thing she could hear was the sound of her own breathing.

Still, Andi thought that there was no use asking for help, she knew she had to make a decision.

Andi put her pained foot down and swiftly raced to her desk beside her closet, aimlessly stepping on the legos that sat in her way and picked up her magnifying glass and jack-o-lantern.

Then, she turned around. Andi pushed back on the wall and made a run for it, hurriedly closing the door to her room.

Andi flicked all the light switches beside the hall hoping it would buy her time. She had almost tripped as she ran down the steps of their wooden staircase.

"C'mon Sam! Let's go. C'mon!"She screamed immediately for Sam to get all of their attention.

She didn't know what it was, all Andi Lee knew was that whatever was in her closet didn't like the light.

Who put the legos in Andi's room?
