Chapter 49 - The Truth
Tobias
I head up toward the train around six fifty to catch the seven o'clock train with whoever is going to this meeting.
There is probably around seven or eight people already outside the stop. Josh and some other leaders were going earlier, so they aren't here. I do recognize some ambassadors, Control Room people and other leaders. There's also some other people that don't even work in or near the Main Building, but they probably heard from the word getting around as like I spread it with my friends.
"Four!" I hear a feminine voice call my name. I turn around and see Zeke, Christina and... my mother?
"Mom? What are you doing?" I ask trying to not be rude. I'm just being curious.
"I figured I'd tag along for the trip, if that's okay." She says chuckling.
I just laugh lightly in reply.
I see that George and Amar now walking down the hallway toward us, hand in hand laughing at something that Amar had said. It's so nice that they are accepted here no matter that they are married.
It is truly free here.
"Hey. What's up?" Zeke says once they get closer.
"Word got around about the meeting, se we decided to tag along. Plus, I'd like to fight to get my sister back as well." George says chuckling at the last part.
I had completely forgot that I haven't seen him since everyone was told who is in that building from what we found.
Zeke pulls out his phone. "The train should be here any minute now. It's almost seven." He says, then puts his phone back in his pocket.
A few minutes later the train whistle blows signaling that it is coming. We all get up to the platform and get ready to start running.
The train starts charging by and we all start to run. I am last of the group. My mother is infront of me, and Chris is infront of her. I don't really know the order infront of her.
Chris grabs onto the train and throws herself in with ease. My mother knows how to get on and off of trains from when the factionless use to use them from time to time. She gets her arm on the door and gets in the train with ease. Then I get myself in to get out of the way for others behind me.
The ride to the Hub is around fifteen minutes.
* * *
We all file into the Hub and follow the wave of around thirty Dauntless up the stairs.
I'd imagine that we are probably going to the twenty-second floor because that's usually where most of the important meetings are held.
I just can't help but wonder how many people are actually going to be at this meeting from all of the factions.
I mean, Dauntless only has like a little more then ten leaders, and there's like thirty of us going.
Hopefully they have a big room for us all, or else we are going to be pretty smushed. It also could be hard for your voice to be heard if there's so many people. Also me being claustrophobic would not enjoy that too much...
Everyone stops at the nineteenth floor. I guess I was wrong about what floor we would be on. We all file through the door into this huge room.
When I say huge, I mean huge. They have certain areas with a ton of chairs blocked off for certain factions, and there's a huge table in the center off the room without chairs around it. All of the leaders that are already here are around the table with papers laid out all around it.
We all head over and grab seats in the area marked off for the Dauntless and chat for a little while. I'm kind of nervous for this meeting and what could happen after it.
This determines if we can actually save everyone.
If I will be able to save Tris.
"Hey, Four!" Josh calls me.
"Hey." I get up and go over to him.
"Glad you made it, and brought others!" He says laughing a little. I had never really paid attention to how much taller he is than me. He's probably a few inches taller than me and has lighter brown hair with hazelish eyes. I know that he was in the initiation class two years before mine.
"Do you have any idea how this is going to work out? I mean, it's already pretty crowded and I can guarantee that there's going to be more people that show up later." I question, wondering if he knows anything.
"I'll be honest, I have no clue how this is going to work... It seems like a recipe for disaster. Who knows how it will lay out. People will probably end up shouting things and yelling. No ones voice will be heard then. What they should do is have a certain spot or time for certain people to talk and stuff. But that defiantly won't happen, so who knows!" Josh says seeming rather pissed off at the whole thing.
"Aside from all of that, we need some leaders up in the front row. Could you join?" He asks.
"Sure, why not." I say shrugging my shoulders.
* * *
It's like seven thirty before all of the main leaders of the factions are in the middle of the big room getting the meeting started.
"Good evening everyone and thank you all for coming out! We are already behind schedule and have a ton of stuff and then some to do so let's not waste time." A woman in black and white greets everyone. I'm assuming she's either the leader of Candor, or someone representing Candor.
"We have two groups here from Erudite that worked on this project that we named project 36. First off is group 1236; a group of our best dectectives. The other is group 2836 which was our people from our Technology Room joint with the people from Dauntless' Control Room. We have representatives from each group to share the information that they have gathered with you all." The leader of Erudite says sounding more professional than everyone else.
A man in blue I don't recognize walks up by the rest of the leaders and starts to speak into one of the various microphones.
"Hello. My name is Richard. I am one of the nine members and the leader of group 1236 for this project. Group 1236 spent our time searching cameras and traces of the mysterious deaths of Caleb and Cara Prior. We investigated people, close friends, anyone who would have seen or been near them the day they disappeared. We found nothing until one day a dauntless man by the name of Greg got caught in some simulation that we found out was placed in his water bottle the day before. The sim made him go and try to hurt the people of group 2836. Thanks by the help of the other dauntless leader who was part of 2836; Four, we got him unconscious and to the hospital for further research. People that were in the room at the time when he came tumbling in as if he was drunk said that eventually he started yelling things like 'He's going to find you, all of you.' and many various things along those lines. We managed to copy the serum that was put into his water bottle and that he had consumed earlier that day. Because of his divergence, he should've been able to resist the serum. That immediately put up a red flag for all of us. The serum was a high tech, much stronger one than we have ever seen or had in our hands within the city. Then we joint together with group 2836 and ended up finding out that the computer DNA that was inside the serum and controlling Greg was also the same computer in this building outside the fence."
The man moves aside and I'm surprised when Diane, the woman I worked side by side with during this walks up to the microphone in his place.
"Hello. My name is Diane. I am one of eighteen members of group 2836; six of them being Dauntless. Group 2836 spent its time trying to get our way somehow into this building outside the fence. This project originated by Caleb Prior, but ended when he was as we were told, 'killed' but we came to find out that he was more or less miraculously kidnapped along with ninety seven other people in this building. We spent our time trying to find any kind of evidence of threat or harm through any technology in the building by trying to find any form of a technological signal or anything that we could hack into to see what was going on. It wasn't easy, but we did find a computer that was hooked up to over two hundred cameras in and around the building. That same computer also held the code and data that was in the serum that ended up in Greg. The cameras we found inside revealed many untold futures for many people. We found that almost all of the people that are being held captive in that building were the people that were so called 'killed' during the war. These people are being fed do little, beaten, shot, and basically living hell right now. Some of them may not make it. We have declared that all of them are from right here in Chicago, and that they once did live here but were taken from our city against their will. These people all will die if we don't do something! We all could end up next, just like Greg had said when he made an attempt to kill me while under a sim. We need to take a stand before its too late!" She yells the last part.
Now all of the crowds are in uproar about if we save the people or not.
"We can't risk loosing more people if we try to help them! They can fend for themselves in that building!"
"They are from our city! How would you feel if you were in their situation?!"
"If we stay uninvolved, the problem will just go away! Who cares about the building!"
"The people there will just die and then the problem will be gone! Who cares about tend anyway?! I mean, they've been gone for this long, who cares so much now?!"
"Why is this even a question? It's sick to not save them! They are our people!"
I lean over to Josh who holds his head in his hand as the volume of the room seems to go up by ten.
"How much trouble would I get in if I went up to the mic and spoke a little bit?" I ask teasingly.
I would get agreement and hate no matter what I did, and I feel that many of these people really don't understand. I stand up and walk over to the mic infront of the leaders. It may be my imagination, but it seems as if the crowd gets a little bit softer.
When the crowd gets almost completely silent, I begin to speak.
"Hi. I'm Four." My voice echos through the room because of the microphone. "And I'm here to tell you the truth behind all of these deaths."
I stop for a minute and think about what to say next.
"You see, we all want to think that everyone in that building will be okay, and that they are okay; that we are and will be safe if we just ignore the problem. But that's just not the truth. The truth is that we will be next, these people won't survive and then they will take more people and more people. Look at Caleb and Cara, just two erudite doing their jobs as a civil faction member and starting a family. She was four or five months pregnant when they kidnapped her, and Caleb was trying to save those people in that building. The truth is that family is still alive in there. We were told that they were dead, and here they are, alive but on the verge of death. The truth is that these are our people and they didn't choose for this to happen. None of them got up one day and wanted to be held captive. Most of them were fighting for freedom and/ or their own safety but then only ended up getting more hurt. The truth is that if we want to save these people and get them out alive, we need to stop questioning the truth and save them as soon as possible." I start to yell only to hide the fear and anger and anxiety for them to understand bubbling in my stomach and about to explode.
"THE TRUTH IS THAT THESE PEOPLE NEVER DIED! THESE PEOPLE WE CALL OUR FAMILY OR FRIENDS OR GIRLFRIENDS OR BOYFRIENDS, OUR HUSBANDS AND WIVES, THE MEMBERS OF OUR FACTIONS; THEY ARE ALL ALIVE! BUT WHO KNOWS IF IN A MONTH THEY STILL WILL BE BECAUSE WE ARE QUESTIONING THE TRUTH!" I yell, almost scream. Then my voice gets quieter. "Why are questioning the truth behind all of these deaths? Why? It doesn't make sense. I know I'm close with at least a dozen people in that building and I know even more that I'm not tight with; I picked them out on the camera footage when I was in Erudite working with 2836. I found my friend's brother and his brother's girlfriend. I found a man that worked with my girlfriend while, believe it or not, they worked together while climbing between buildings. I found my girlfriend's best friend's boyfriend. I found the woman that helped me hide my divergence when I first took my aptitude test. I found Caleb and Cara Prior, along with my girlfriend's family. And you know what? I found my girlfriend. These people and all of the others in this building all have something in common. We were told that they were all dead. You see, these people are just some of the ninety seven people in that building that I knew personally. Some of them I didn't even know, but I knew people who knew them."
Quiet murmurs spread like wildfire across the room and I look over at my friends and mother who are sitting in the chunk of dauntless. Christina's eyes meet my gaze and she smiles; a small and sad yet strong and encouraging smile. I don't move my eyes from her's because out of all of the people in this room right now, she probably the only one who will actually relate to what I'm about to say.
"When I first saw my girlfriend, Beatrice Prior on that camera footage that 2836 found, the only thing that made me recognize her was her eyes. That dull yet bright blue was the only characteristic that hadn't changed of her. Out of all of the people in that building that we found, she is in the worst condition with her mother being second to worst. The two are in two totally different situations. Her mother has been raped various times and has been pregnant we think four times. Beatrice, Tris," my voice cracks on her name. "She has been shot over five times in her left calf leg area and could die any second from blood loss. The one part of information Diane didn't share with you earlier was the name of the man who is causing hell on not only those two people, but everyone in this building. I knew him as a form of dictator when I first left the fence and found refugee at the city that he was in control over. He was the leader of The Bureau of Genetic Welfare and his first name we know is David. He is the reason for all of this. He is the one we should be questioning. He is the one that has hid the truth from us for the past three to four years. He's the enemy, not the people in the building, but he and his workers in the building, they are the enemies." I take a deep breath as I get that off my shoulders. Murmurs of the realization of those who knew David spread through the room. I hadn't taken my eyes off of Christina, who now has a few silent tears streaming down her face.
"I know that it seems like a shock to some, and obvious to others, but that is the truth. I just ask of you to take what I've said into consideration and maybe have the truth wake you up a little bit." I start to conclude. I notice that Josh gets up and walks over to the group of leaders that are to the left of me.
"The truth is that none of these people actually died." I conclude and walk back to my seat.
It's silent for a few seconds, but then a few people start to clap, then a few more, then a ton of people are standing up and shouting while clapping. The dauntless of course are the loudest. There is a select few that continue to sit with their arms crossed in a bored like manner. I guess I didn't convince them, or they maybe don't want to admit that I'm right.
The leader of Candor walks up to the microphone. "We need all leaders from all factions to come forward to take a vote on this right here, right now."
I head up with the few other leaders from Dauntless to the group of probably twenty leaders. I stand next to Josh and he claps me on the back. "That was great." He says then walks up with the rest of the head leaders to the front of the group.
"Okay. Lest get this done with. Majority rules so when we ask just say 'I' and raise your hand. We'll take a count and then have our answer. Only vote once and yeah." The leader of Amity says.
"All in favor of going to the building and saving these people say 'I' and raise your hand." The Candor leader says.
"I." I raise my my hand along with a huge chunk of the group. Could it be everybody? I notice that all of the head leaders are raising their hands except for the leader of Candor. He hesitates when he sees the huge amount of hands, but then puts his hand up.
"Let's make this easier, all who disagree, raise your hand and say 'I'." The leader of Abnegation finally says something for once.
About eight or nine people raise their hands, and I feel my heart sink for a second.
But then I remember.
Majority rules.
Does that mean--?
"Well, it looks like we will be rescuing the people from that building." The Erudite leader says into the microphone.
The shouts of glee and anger swarm the room at once.
The truth is that all of these people are infact alive,
And now, we are going to save them.
I feel myself truly smile for the first time in years.
A/N-
Hi humans!
So hense the name with this chapter. What'd you think?! I personally take a lot of pride in this chapter for it being the first huge climax of the story.
I'm dogsitting my grandmas fat Shitzu today at my house. She's just snoring at me while she's wide awake looking at me right now. So yeah...
Idk when next update will be, hopefully soon but I have an idea but don't have much of an idea how to write it with my style. (For the next Tris POV) But I'll hopefully update once again before break.
