chapter one

"Did Romeo ever call you back?" Nia asked, glancing over at me as we walked through the campus doors. The sound of chattering people was heard immediately, the scent of strong coffee filling the air around us.

I sighed, rolling my eyes as we stepped into the room, "No, that idiot has gotten mamá so worried, I hate him,"

"He's your brother," Nia replied, sitting back and giving me a look, "You love him more than anyone in this world."

I sighed once again and slid into the seat beside her, "Doesn't mean I don't hate him right now,"

To make my day even worse, the boys from the club last night walked in and sat in the seats in front of us. I closed my eyes tightly and exhaled, feeling the blood boil inside me. Of course, they had to ruin the one class that I actually enjoyed.

"Since when are they in this class?" I hissed to Nia, glaring at the back of their heads.

"Since forever Nova," she hissed back, "But you're too busy paying attention to the dumbass professor."

Before I had the chance to say anything back, the same green-eyed boy turned back to face us. Just staring at him made my temper rise, everything from his perfectly styled hair to his expensive looking denim jacket. He even smelled expensive.

I'm only jealous cause he has money, my conscious revealed bitterly.

"Damn, criminals in a criminal law class?" he snickered, "How very ironic."

I clenched my jaw tightly before smiling sweetly at him, "Damn, you got me there. However, does mommy know you're here? Golly, don't wanna get involved with any criminals now do we?"

The cocky smile on his face immediately dropped and he glared viciously at me, making me grin triumphantly.  Funny how he seemed so confident here rather than last night.

Nia began cackling, "Damn bitch,"

"Dakota just leave it," the same boy who was getting it on with Nia yesterday said, sparing a quick glance at Nia. Ah, so he has a name. Dakota.

He rolled his eyes and shot me another death glare before turning back around.

"Putas," I muttered under my breath, blowing a piece of hair out of my face.

. . .

"Hey, I saw the way Dakota was speaking to you and that totally wasn't cool," one of Dakota's chicks, said sympathetically, "But to make up to it, you should come to my birthday party!"

Good God, not another one. I could practically smell the lies from her tone. She handed me a sparkly purple envelope, "Oh and feel free to bring your friend as well!"

She put her hand on my shoulder and I immediately scowled at it, "Please come, we'd love to have you!"

I looked behind her to see the whole rich kid's clique laughing to themselves while staring at us. Part of me wanted to rip up her invite, throw it in her face, and tell her to suck it but I resisted.

"Thank you, uh," I trailed off awkwardly, looking at her.

She looked slightly offended, before replying dryly, "Name's Holly,"

With that, she sashayed away, ignoring our confused looks.

"Damn it, they're just fucking with us," I mumbled angrily, "They're probably gonna pull some big stunt on us when we go."

Nia chewed her gum obnoxiously before saying, "We should go there and show them who they wanna fuck with,"

"They already think that we're lowlife criminals, why make them believe it more," I said, before tossing the invite on the ground.

"Nova!" she demanded, her brows furrowing together, "Come on where's that rebellious woman I know and love?"

"There's a difference in rebellious and plain stupid Nia," I asserted, rolling my eyes.

Nia bent down and picked up the invite and blowing off the dust, "Well, I'm going and you don't have to come,"

She very well knew that if she went, I would more than happily follow. I would never let her go out by herself.

"I like actually hate you," I mumbled, before snatching the invite from her and opening it up. I scanned through the elegant designs.

"Holly Montgomery's 19th Birthday Party," I mocked in a sweet tone, "Please bring your best swimsuit and no boxed gifts please!"

I rolled my eyes once again, "Jesus a pool party, how original,"

Nia smirked, raising her eyebrows, "Even better,"

I sighed before smiling at her, I knew I was making a mistake. One that I would probably end up regretting forever. I was expecting the worst case scenario out of this.

The sinking feeling in my gut only increased as I caught eyes with Dakota once more before he walked away.
