I hadn't realized I had fallen asleep. When my eyes opened up, I saw a slideshow of houses out the window. Every house looked nice and clean, and the yards were even green and well-kept. I looked at the clock, still slightly dazed. It was 2:17pm, around the time for our estimated arrival.
"So how long have you lived here?" I asked, as I tried stretching with the little space I had.
David had flinched when I spoke, not realizing I was awake again. I giggled at the fact that I had man a grown man jump with my feminine voice.
When he looked over at me smiling, he smiled with me.
"Actually barely even three weeks. Before here, I lived in an apartment for one. But once I planned on having you live with me, I had to get a new place first. I had been saving money for the past four years, making sure the place I decided on would be acceptable for you and me, but mostly you." He explained.
I was really starting to appreciate David's efforts. Maybe he was just trying to kiss-ass, but either way he was trying and I was noticing.
"I don't mean to be 'that kid', but are we almost there? I haven't felt my legs since I woke up."
"No we're not almost there," David smirked when he looked over at my puzzled expression, "We're here."
Not even a minute later we were turning into a paved driveway and I found us sitting parked in front of a giant marble and stone mansion!
Not really. This isn't 'Annie'.
It was a nice house though. Single story, but decent size with a two car garage, which made me excited to think I'd possibly have a car to park inside it.
David turned to me again, "I've got a lot planned for us, not saying we have to squeeze it all in one day. But there's so much I want to do for you, with you." He smiled warmly at me.
Before opening my door I smiled back at him, "David, I can honestly say I'm excited."
It was as if anything I said made this guy's smile grow wider than the Grand Canyon.
We finally exited the vehicle, and my heart beat faster the closer we got to the front door. I wasn't sure if I was nervous about living in an actual house for the first time, or the fact that I was getting closer to the talk I needed to have with David. I really needed to calm my nerves so I decided to stop thinking about everything at once and start taking in the new life one thing at a time.
New thing number one; new house.
I let David walk in front of me to unlock the door. He carried my bag with him as he used his keys to unlock the door.
As the lock clicked, David muttered under his breath, barely loud enough for me to hear, "I hope you like it..."
The door was opened and we walked inside, entering the living room right after the entrance. The room had limited furniture: a couch, one coffee table, and a TV on the wall. Continuing past the living room was the hallway I assumed leading to the bath and bedrooms. And straight across from the living room was the kitchen and dining area. Which was the place I walked to first.
There were a plethora of wooden cabinets and counters made of granite. The appliances were all stainless steel and my curiosity led me to the fridge first. Opening it though was only a disappointment, for there was nothing inside but some eggs, milk, and grape jelly.
Still in the living room, David called over to me, "I wanted to wait to go big grocery shopping till I had you to help me pick stuff. Didn't want to risk getting stuff you didn't like."
Nodding my head, I pointed toward the hallway, "My room back there?"
Once again David smiled, "Uh yeah, it is. The one at the end and on the left. Across from you is me, and don't worry, we have our own bathrooms."
My own bathroom? Definitely the best thing I've heard all day. Back at the foster home, it could take up to a half hour waiting for a vacant bathroom. We only had five in the whole building.
Still, thinking of the foster home made me miss the kids. Especially James, I was hoping I'd be able to call him soon.
David walked me back to my new bedroom, he opened the door and like he said when he picked me up, there wasn't much inside. The walls were white and the only furniture was a black dresser and a queen bed with black covers.
New thing number two; new bedroom.
My mind was already racing with the ideas and possibilities I could bring to life in this room.
"We can get whatever furniture and decor you want. And I've got a buddy who's a carpenter, so if we can't find something you like, we can build it." He suggested.
I shrugged, "I mean I don't think I'll need anything special. I'm a pretty simplistic girl." Even though I knew there was no way I would stop David from spoiling me anytime soon. He had a lot to make up for.
Speaking of, "So David... When do you want to talk?" I asked hesitantly.
For once, David wasn't smiling, "Whenever you're ready Robin, I'll explain everything." He sounded shaky and sad.
"I've been ready to talk to you ever since I learned about you."
