Chapter 9 | Aurora Whittington
Aurora woke up from a loud bang piercing through the silence, followed by a high-pitched scream.
Her head snapped up, though her vision was still distraught.
She carefully stood, putting on her slippers. She glanced at Pebbles, who was still sound asleep in her cage, as she opened her door and peered out.
"Psssttt!" she heard a voice.
"Who's there?" Aurora demanded, still blind from the darkness.
"Lumos," the voice whispered.
A light slowly glowed from the tip of a wand, revealing the face of Lyra Blackwood. Her hair was down and slightly messy.
"What was that sound?" Aurora asked, getting a chill from the cold hallways.
"I don't know," Lyra admitted, keeping her wand in a firm grip. "It's from upstairs where the boys are sleeping."
"The twins," Aurora breathed, remembering "the plan" that they had mentioned. "Do you know who screamed?"
Lyra bit her lip as if she knew the answer but was hiding it. "I-I'm not certain. I was going to go up there, but you can come if you want."
Aurora nodded, fetching her own wand from her room, casting the Lumos spell on it.
Just as the two of them were about to advance up the staircase, a soft voice spoke, "What on Earth was that?"
They turned, seeing Iris Goldinson standing in the hallway, her hair completely messed up, looking like a clown wig on the top of her head.
"We don't know," Lyra said quickly. "Come or stay."
Aurora noticed Iris shaking like a wet cat. She was obviously terrified.
"Iris, just stay in your room," she told her.
Iris nodded frantically and bolted back into her room, locking the door behind her.
Aurora looked at Lyra, they nodded to each other, and started up the stairs.
Once they reached the top, they noticed two doors wide open, except they weren't open normally.
Coming out of the two of the rooms shot floods of multicolored sparks and bangs.
Fireworks...
"MAKE IT STOP!" one voice wailed. "DON'T JUST STAND THERE! DO SOMETHING!"
"WHAT???" another asked cluelessly as another fury of fireworks exploded.
"ANYTHING, YOU IDIOT!" the voice scolded. "GOYLE, HELP HIM!"
There was a slight moment of silence until another fury came, though this time, it caused a figure to tumble out of a room.
The figure was difficult to make out, but the platinum blonde hair was a dead giveaway.
Draco Malfoy blindly backed up on the floor, not knowing her or Lyra were there.
Aurora shined her wand which caused him to whirl around.
His eyes were as wide as saucers and his skin was slightly ashy from the fireworks display inside their rooms. He was wearing black silk pants and a white short-sleeved shirt.
He swatted her wand out of his face and his cold eyes narrowed at her. He then noticed Lyra and his expression softened slightly.
"What is going on???" Lyra asked, helping Malfoy up.
"ASK THEM!" he growled loudly, pointing at a door that was cracked open.
Another blast of fireworks went off and Crabbe and Goyle fell out into the hallway as Aurora peered into the cracked room.
Inside were two red-headed young men giggling uncontrollably and high fiving.
Aurora burst out laughing as the twins opened the door completely.
"Good morning Aurora!" George said cheerfully as the fireworks started fading away.
"GOOD MORNING???" Malfoy shrieked, still notably traumatized. "I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF IT WAS STILL THE NIGHT."
"Actually!" Fred started. "It's not the night!"
"It's 1:30 in the morning!" George finished, smiling widely.
"ARG!" Malfoy desperately pulled out his wand from his pocket. Before he could cast anything, Lyra lowered it, but it was no use. Malfoy shook Lyra's grip off and screamed, "FURNUCULUS!"
A blast of light shot out of Malfoy's wand, straight at the twins.
Fred dove out of the way, but George was too slow.
The spell missed Fred, but struck his brother across the face.
George yelped and collapsed onto the floor. "AW, NOT COOL!"
Malfoy steadied his breathing and stepped back, admiring his work.
Fred and Aurora ran over to George who still had his face covered.
Aurora gulped and lightly touched George's hands, slowly lowering them.
Her stomach sank as she saw him.
All across George's face were dozens of red boils.
"Oh my..." she trailed off.
George whimpered and covered his face again.
Fred stood and advanced toward Malfoy. "You-"
"Hey, don't you dare blame me, Weasley!" Draco raised his wand to keep him away. "You two started this!"
Aurora helped George stand, sat him on his bed, and stepped back into the hallway.
Lyra looked between both of them. "Alright, hang-"
"My father will most certainly hear about this!" Malfoy interrupted. "You filthy blood traitors!"
Fred advanced again, but Aurora held him back and led him over to George.
She, once again, scurried back into the hallway, this time to clean up the rest of the mess.
She looked at Lyra, who genuinely didn't know what to do. She looked like she wanted to try to say something to Draco, but it would be no use. He was far too distressed.
Suddenly, a door creaked open from down the hall and Cedric Diggory stepped out.
"Is everything ok?" he asked, starting to walk towards the scene, but in order for Cedric to get to them, he needed to walk past Draco Malfoy's bedroom...and the door was still open...
Oh no, Aurora managed to think before more chaos broke loose.
As he almost made it past Malfoy's room, a single rogue firework blasted out, plowing straight into Cedric's face.
Even the Slytherins winced at the unfortunate event, given what the boys had to go through.
Cedric crumpled to the floor, clutching his face and chest, where the firework hit. Unluckily for him, Cedric was shirtless, with only a pair of white shorts on.
No one said a word.
The scene was too unreal.
Cedric lay on the ground, writhing in pain. Draco was silent, just breathing heavily and was still gathering himself. Lyra watched, concerned. Fred was comforting a boil-covered George. Crabbe and Goyle tried cleaning themselves, and Aurora stood in the center of the hallway, not knowing at all what to do.
After another long moment, Aurora took a deep breath and helped Cedric up, into the twin's room. She lay him on Fred's bed as George lay on his own.
She glanced back into the hallway to see Lyra, Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle awkwardly standing there.
"Let's-um-let's get you three cleaned up," Lyra suggested, trying to herd them into Malfoy's room.
Draco paused, not moving. His face was hard and filled with rage. He glanced at his three friends, then shook his head. "No, I'm going to bed."
Aurora looked at Lyra who blinked in confusion. "Wait, what?"
"Everyone just go to their rooms," he grumbled, walking back into his room, slamming the door behind him.
There was another pause of silence, until Crabbe and Goyle slouched their shoulders and slumbered into their room.
Lyra lowered her wand, speechless. "Nox," she whispered and her Lumos spell diminished, and something told Aurora she knew why she cancelled the light.
Aurora shifted. "I...I can handle the others. Why don't you get back to your room, yeah?"
Lyra nodded slowly, looking hurt, turned on her heels, and walked back downstairs.
Aurora sighed, genuinely feeling extremely bad for her friend.
"Mew!"
Aurora suddenly jumped, seeing Pebbles trotting over to her, headbutting her leg. She sighed. "How did this mess happen?" she muttered to her cat.
Pebbles purred and meowed again.
She smiled at her new best friend and entered the twin's room. She was no healer, but she knew for a fact that she had a lot of work to do.
