Chapter 16

"The boys here are hot," Abbey commented as we lounged around under a tree that we claimed as our new "spot".

"You have a boyfriend," I said.

"So? That doesn't mean I can't look," she retorted. I rolled my eyes at her.

"You know, if Lance ever did that, you would bite his head off," I pointed out.

"Well, Lance would never do that. So I wouldn't have to be forced towards cannibalism," Abbey replied.

"You don't know that he wouldn't do that," I said.

"Yes, I do," she argued.

"Why didn't you tell me you guys did it over the summer?" I asked, blurting the question out abruptly.

Abbey's cheeks flushed with color and she immediately looked away from me. At least she had the decency to feel ashamed and guilty.

"I wanted to tell you in person," she muttered.

"I wanted to hear it from you and not Lance," I said. She frowned.

"I told him not to tell you..." she said.

"Well, clearly he has good listening skills," I said sarcastically.

"Look, I was going to tell you. It's just not something I wanted to discuss over the phone," she said.

"I would have thought that the person you refer to as your best friend would be the first to know of such a landmark stride in your relationship, but I guess I was mistaken," I continued, ignoring what Abbey was saying.

I actually wasn't that angry. I just wanted to see how far I could push Abbey before she would break. I knew it would be soon.

"I told you! I wanted to tell you in person! So that we could discuss it face to face!" she exclaimed, defending herself strongly.

I sighed dramatically.

"It's all right; you don't have to make up excuses. I see how little significance I have in your life. I guess I'm just far too inferior to be in your inner circle. What a shame. And I thought we were best friends," I kept going.

Abbey glared at me now. I kept the serious and hurt expression on mine, although it was difficult to maintain.

"You are such a bull shitter, Caley," she said. I smirked now.

"Seriously, though. I am kind of peeved that I heard it from Lance first and not you," I said.

"It's not my fault he's got a mouth the size of the world," she grumbled. I chuckled.

"I'm only messing with you," I said.

"I know. You're so annoying," she replied. I snickered.

"So, are you going to give me the dirty, juicy details that I don't want to know?" I asked.

"I think secretly you're really fascinated with my love life, but you just don't want to admit your guilty pleasure," she said. I let out a bark of laughter.

"Hah! As if!" I cried.

"Denial," she said simply. I stuck my tongue out at her and she returned the childish gesture.

"What are you girls fighting about now?" Lance asked, coming up with Trey.

"Go away. I'm not speaking with you," I said to him, crossing my arms over my chest.

"I'm guessing she found out," Trey said, chuckling as he sat down next to me. I widened my eyes.

"He knew! Really?! Are you joking?!" I cried.

"Wow, she actually sounds offended this time," Lance noted. I glared at him.

"Caley, you know I've been friends with Trey for a lot longer than I have been friends with you," she said.

"That doesn't mean you tell him about your sex life!" I exclaimed. She clamped a hand over my mouth, her cheeks blushing hard.

"Scream it to the world, why don't you?" Lance hissed. I bit at her hand and she pulled away, meeting my glare with hers.

"Well, as amusing as it is to talk about this, let's change the subject, shall we?" Trey suggested.

"Yes, please," Abbey grumbled.

"Have you gotten your list of classes yet?" Lance asked.

"Yes," Abbey and I replied together.

"Well, let's have them, then. What classes are you in?" Lance questioned.

For the next few minutes, we took out our schedules and compared them, rejoicing when we found we had one together or booing when we found we didn't.

"So we've got Ancient History of Magic, Potions 110, Metamorphosis 110, and Latin 210 together," Trey said, looking over all of our schedules.

"Four classes. Not bad," Lance commented.

"History is a lecture," I pointed out.

"So?" Abbey said.

"There's going to be about 150 people in our class," Trey told her.

"Oh, wow," she said.

"Yeah. It's perfect. That means they won't take attendance," I said giddily.

"Wow, you're already planning on which classes you're going to skip?" Lance said. I shrugged and leaned back against the tree, folding my arms behind my head.

"Ever the slacker," Trey joked, leaning back next to me. I smirked and he kissed the tip of my nose.

"Hey, freshman!" we heard a shout. We all looked up to see Matt walking towards us with a tall girl that had dark skin and glowing amber eyes. It was she who called out to us.

"I told you not to call them that," Matt said, rolling his eyes as they approached us.

"Hi, Matt," I said cheerily. Trey glared at him, his jaw square.

"You were right, Matty. She is a pretty one," the exotic looking girl said with a sly smile.

"Oralie," Matt hissed. I chuckled, feeling my cheeks redden slightly.

"What?" she asked innocently. I noticed she had a bit of an accent. It wasn't completely European, that was for sure. Perhaps it was African of some sort. Mixed with French.

"I'm Oralie, by the way," she said, extending out a long, skinny arm. I took the hand she offered and shook it.

"I'm Caley," I replied.

"So I've heard," she said with a smirk.

"Will you shut up?" Matt asked, rolling his eyes.

"You must be the boyfriend," Oralie said, turning towards Trey with a smile.

"You are correct. I'm Trey," Trey said, nodding at her.

"He's handsome. You've got competition," Oralie noted. Lance, Abbey and I snorted as Trey and Matt glared at each other.

"There's no competition, if he knows what's best for him," Lance chuckled.

"What do you mean?" Oralie asked, tilting her head so her long braided hair cascaded to the side.

"They're in love," Abbey said in a shrill, high-pitched voice. I made sure to punch her extra hard when I did. She let out a yelp, sending me a glare.

"Ah. Young romance," Oralie noted, her yellow amber eyes glittering in the sunlight. "Anyway, it was nice meeting you, freshmen. I may be seeing you around," Oralie said.

"Why?" I asked.

"She's the assistant to the professor in freshman Potions. She's amazing with herbs," Matt explained. Oralie smiled proudly.

"Impressive," I said.

"Goodbye, Caley," Oralie said, beginning to walk away. Matt trailed away after her and I waved to them.

"She's different," I said.

"She's hot," Lance added. Abbey and I smacked him.

"He's a pain in the ass," Trey muttered.

"Right? Lance, why are you so irritating?" I asked.

"I was talking about Matt," Trey said. I bit my lip.

"Oh," I said. Lance smacked me upside the head and I glared at him.

"Trey, you've seriously got nothing to worry about," I assured him.

"Really? Because judging from the way he was looking at you, I think there is," Trey snapped.

"He's totally jealous," Lance said. Abbey shot him a glare and then stood up, dragging him up with her.

"We'll see you two at dinner," Abbey said, pulling Lance away.

Now Trey and I were alone.

"Why are you so bothered by him?" I asked after a brief moment of silence.

"Are you seeing the same person I am?" he retorted.

"Yes, I am," I replied. "And he's nothing compared to you. You have nothing to worry about," I told him, my voice soft, placing a hand on his arm.  He smiled gently at me and then leaned in and kissed my lips.

"Sorry I was being irrational," he said after pulling away.

"It's ok. I'm a pretty good catch. I'd be worried if I were you, too," I replied jokingly. He laughed and pecked my lips.  We settled back against the trunk of the tree, letting the warm afternoon air envelope us in its serenity.

                                                           ~~~~~~~~~~~
"Remind me why I decided to take a 9 am class with you again," I grumbled to Abbey the first day of class.
"Because it's Careers in Magic and we both have no idea what the hell to do with our lives," Abbey responded in her chipper voice. I glared at her. It was much too early to be so full of energy.
"Why did I think that was a good enough reason?" I asked.
"Stop being a sour puss," she told me sternly, poking my cheek with her finger. I mumbled under my breath to myself as we walked across campus to our first class of the day.
To be honest, I was really nervous for the first day of classes. Some of the classes we were taking, such as the one we were walking to right now, were classes with upperclassmen. Already we were admist hundreds of talented and strong witches and wizards. During the past few days, as I walked around on campus, I noticed people performing magic just for the purpose of doing magic. I would see people levitating their books, transfiguring pencils into pens, changing their outfits with a flick of their wrists. It was amazing and I couldn't wait to work on my everyday magical skills.
Yes, I was fairly adequate at defensive and offensive spells now, thanks to all the training I had gotten from Elijah over the summer. But I still didn't know some of the basic things, like how to change one object to another. Transfiguration, or metamorphosis, would be one of the newer things we would learn at TUM. This was a completely foreign aspect of magic to me; it was something that even Elijah hadn't taught me. He had brushed it off saying that metamorphosis was a very difficult part of magic and that it would be better if I learned in at school from professionals.
"Oh, hot damn," Abbey said when we walked into the lecture class. I looked at her, confused. She took my face in her hand and turned it towards the front of the classroom. There stood the most handsome man I had ever laid eyes on.
"Hmm..." I said.
"Worth waking up at 9 am for?" Abbey asked me, a smug look on her face.
"Oh, most definitely. Let's sit up front, shall we?" I suggested.
"It's like you read my mind," she replied. We skipped to the front of the lecture hall, seating ourselves directly in front of the professor. The teacher looked up, shooting us a smile.
"Ah, my first students," he said, his accent evident. I couldn't help but smile.
"Well, you know. We just wanted to make a good first impression," I said casually.
"The mark of an intelligent student," he replied. Abbey giggled and I smirked. Perhaps this wouldn't be so bad.
The class began filling up in the next few minutes. I looked around and noted that the majority of the people in the class were girls. A few overly dressed and made up girls came and sat beside us, flashing the professor a look of their enhanced cleavage.
"Do you think people would be so shallow as to enhance their chests?" I asked loudly enough for the girls to hear me. Fortunately, the professor also heard this. Although he didn't say anything, he chuckled lightly to himself. The slutty girls glared at me. I looked back at them defiantly.
"Why do you have to be so infinitely irritating?" Abbey asked.
"What do you mean?" I questioned innocently.
"You don't have to voice every thought that comes to your mind. It's like the filter between your brain and mouth is broken," she replied.
"Hey, if I have an opinion, I like to say it," I argued. She rolled her eyes at me, shaking her head.
Soon after, class began. The professor introduced himself as Professor Kevin Nemtin. He was born, raised, and had attended school in London. He had golden brown hair and nice hazel eyes, but the most notable characteristic about him was his smile. His lips curled up adorably in a way that reached his eyes, making anyone smile just looking at him.
Professor Nemtin was young, having himself graduated from TUM only a few years back. He had decided to pursue studying magical education and was now a professor. He taught our class and a few classes specifically for those who wished to study magical education, since that was his area of expertise.
"I think I might be an education major," Abbey whispered to me. I chuckled under my breath.
"Me, too," I replied.
After Careers, we had Spells at 10:00. We practically had to run across campus to get to class on time. The campus was divided in order of magical usage. The classes that actually used magic were on the West side of campus. The lecture based classes were on the North side of campus. The regular classes were on the East side. The dormitories and housing were on the South campus.
Careers was on the North campus and it was a ten minute walk to the West campus, where Spells was. We rushed into the class, just on time.
"Oh my God, I thought we would be late," Abbey panted.
"Me too," I replied. I wasn't as winded as she was. I was used to running long distances.
"I kind of wish the boys were in this class with us," Abbey said as we took our seats.
The class was set up so that it looked almost like a forum. There were seats on a raised platform which was about 3 feet up from the ground. The platform went around the room and below it was a flat area. At the head of the class, there was a podium and desk, where no doubt the professor would be teaching us. I guess the rest of the space was reserved for the students to practice the spells.
"What do they have right now?" I asked.
"I think they have Anatomy of the Magii," she replied. I nodded.
The professor walked in at the moment and I gasped when I saw who it was.
"Professor Little!" I exclaimed, unable to contain myself. Several students glanced curiously at me. My old Spells professor, and really my favorite professor, from Trinity High looked up.
"Ah! Caley! So nice to see you in my class," Professor Little said.
"I didn't know you were transferring to the University," I said.
"Well, yes. Your father asked me if I'd like a promotion and I thought, why not?" he replied. I smiled at him. At least my father had made one good decision.
For the remainder of class, which was an hour and fifteen minutes, Professor Little introduced himself, gave us some background about himself, and told us what the course would entail. It was just another typical first day class. I found myself tuning out, regardless of him being my favorite professor.
Abbey and I had a short break after Spells. It was almost 11:30 and we were already hungry, since we skipped out on breakfast in the morning. We decided to hit up one of the cafes on campus to get something to eat before we met with the boys to go to History.
"Campus food is kind of disgusting," Abbey said, biting into the raisin bagel she had gotten.
"And pricey," I added, noting the ridiculous prices for the drinks.
"I guess that's one thing that this place has in common with other universities: it tries to cheat money out of you in every way possible," she said.
"And what makes it worse is that it's my father's school," I said. She bit her lip, as if unsure if she offended me. "I really don't care. I think it's dumb, too," I assured her. She nodded, but still seemed uncertain.
"History?" she said.
"History. This class better be good. We got zero to no details about our ancestors. The only reason I'm taking this class is to get more information about my people," I said.
"That, and it's a required course," Abbey pointed out.
"This is true," I said.
We met the boys in History. This class was also a lecture, so it was on the North campus.
"You know, maybe we should have looked at the campus map and our classes before picking them," Abbey said. "We're getting quite the work out going back and forth between the campuses," she said.
"Stop being so lazy. You're just used to the cramped high school campus. This is just more spread out," I replied.
We walked into class, taking our seats.
"Seriously? How are the boys not here yet?" Abbey asked, looking around.
"Is it on this campus, or is it on the East one?" I asked.
"I think it's a lecture. It should be on this side of campus," Abbey replied. I shrugged and leaned back in my seat, closing my eyes for a moment as students trickled in.
"Caley, class hasn't even started yet and you're already asleep," I heard Lance's voice say. I reached out and punched his arm when I made contact with it. He chuckled and I opened my eyes.
"Why are you so completely obnoxious?" I asked him as he sat next to Abbey.
"I'm not obnoxious; I just bring humor into your otherwise boring and colorless life," he responded.
"Is there ever a time when you two aren't breathing fire down each other's necks?" Trey asked.
"I'm not the fire-breather here," I said.
"Right," Lance said, rolling his eyes. I reached across Abbey and smacked him upside the head. He glared at me. "Your girlfriend is so abusive," he mumbled to Trey, who had an amused smirk on his face.
"Stop annoying her, then," Trey replied. I smirked victoriously as Lance mumbled under his breath. I turned towards Trey and smiled at him.
"How have classes been?" I asked him.
"They're all right. It was just a whole bunch of syllabus talk so far," he replied. "What about you?" he asked.
"Same," I replied. "My Careers professor is a hottie," I added, just to see his reaction.
"Already pursuing a forbidden student/teacher relationship?" he asked. I laughed.
"You know what a rebel I am," I said. He chuckled and leaned forward, planting a kiss on the side of my head.
Just as expected, we went over the syllabus for the semester in History as well. The good thing was that we got out about an hour early, because our professor told us he thought we were more than capable of reading through a packet of policies and work for the class by ourselves. After a brief introduction, Professor McDougal let us go.
"Verdict on the first day of classes?" Lance asked as we walked towards our dorms together.
"Well, first of all, it's not even 1:00 and we're already out," Abbey said.
"And we have no homework," Trey added.
"I think it was a pretty good first day," I concluded.
And it was.
A/N: Ok, so I know I've been MIA. And here is my feeble explanation for that.
1. I've had a CRAZY past few weeks. I just got done with my first round of presentations and tests, so now I'm free.
2. I've been updating my other story, The Mail Boy, because one, it's more popular and is getting more attention, and two, I just want to finish it up so I can focus solely on this story.
Those are my reasosn. But this was a nice long update to make up for it (at least I hope!). I know it was kind of boring. I added another character, Oralie. She may or may not be important later on in the third book. I haven't decided yet.
Anywhoo. Please comment and vote. Let me know what you think about their University life so far. I promise it will get more interesting. I believe my favorite chapter is coming up in the near future, so wait for that!
Vote! Comment!
