Chapter Seven
*edited*
Lincoln's POV
I mindlinked my father and told him to come to my office in the packhouse, we desperately needed to talk about the pills he's been giving Brielle and the whole witch thing I promised her. I waited a few more minutes before there was finally a knock on the door.
"Come in."
He walked in and took a seat in one of the leather chairs in front of my desk.
"First, tell me everything about those pills she's been taking." I said getting right to the point not caring for any pleasantries.
"Well I found a witch living not too far from the outskirts of our pack and I knew it was risky but I had to trust her with Brielle's secret. She was losing control of her powers at a rapid pace a few years ago, I remember this one time she had a bad nightmare and I walked in and half of the things in the room were destroyed. The sad thing was that she didn't even realize that she did it." He frowned. "I was running out of options and she wasn't getting better with control, now I just fear that if she continues to grow in power, nothing will be able to keep the demon at bay."
"Brielle has no idea you've been giving her a pill to cut off her demon side, does she?" I asked even though deep down I already knew the answer to that question.
" I don't want to scare her with that stuff. She's been through too much already." He frowned. It's true based off the stories we've heard we have been able to pinpoint where she came from. Apparently, one of the most gruesome battles took place about fifteen minutes away from our pack border. They couldn't have really even been considered a pack they were so small in numbers, but rumor has it they were still incredibly powerful. They were attacked by Hunters and Rogues who worked together to destroy something supposedly in a prophecy, I think it was, I was still young at the time.
I still remember that day I found her hiding under that tree in the woods, terrified. Little did I know I probably found the girl that the Rogues and Hunters were trying to kill. I clenched my fists at the thought of anyone hurting her.
"As much as I want to protect her from this, she has the right to know. I mean you've been lying to her, telling her those were just vitamins, that's not fair to her even if they are meant to help." I said rubbing my temples to ease the headache that was quickly brewing.
"Yesterday after the meeting she was confronted by one of the guards and he was planning on bringing her to the dungeons, so she got scared and accidentally did something to him. He's in the pack hospital now in and out of consciousness. But Dad— when I found him, all the grass surrounding him was dead, that's how I pieced it together that it was her." I frowned and when I met his eyes they were filled with nothing but pity and frustration.
"She brought something up about wanting to get help from a witch, do you trust that witch enough to let her see Brielle?" I asked.
"I do." He frowned. "I was hoping it wouldn't come to that, but clearly I was wrong."
"By the way if I ever find out you are working with another supernatural species without notifying me first there will be consequences, regardless if you are my father or not." I needed him to know that just because he is my father doesn't make him above any of the laws in this pack. If it was anyone else they would have been in the dungeons already.
"Okay, I will give the witch a call to see if she would be willing to help." He said before standing up, the chair screeching on the wood floors.
He didn't spare me another glance before he walked out the door. I rolled my eyes at his behavior and decided to just finish some more of my pack work. The rogues have been getting further into my territory than is acceptable by any means. We are one of the strongest packs, this shouldn't be happening and it will end. I needed to sort through the ranks and weed out the incompetent soldiers who aren't doing their one fucking job.
I suddenly heard a soft knock on the door and my wolf immediately picked up on her intoxicating scent.
"Hey." I said to her as she walked in.
She gave me a small smile, nearly causing my wolf to go feral, and took a seat across from me.
"Is my wolf supposed to go this crazy when I'm not near you?" I laughed at that. We always feel the constant pull to be near each other. That's why when anyone loses a mate it's told to be torturous and painful. Death is said to be a better fate. My father would know.
"Believe me, mine goes just as insane when you aren't next to me." Her cheeks reddened as a shy smile graced her lips.
"I was wondering if you would like to come with me to James' today? I was planning on practicing some magic?" She said looking up at me through her long lashes.
"Sure." I said closing one of the many reports I had opened from one of my commanding warriors.
She gave me a smile and stood up quickly, pushing in the chair James left out.
"Ready?" I asked her and she nodded. We walked out of the pack house and towards that cottage on the outskirts.
"James!" She called once we got in. Silence. Why wouldn't he be home. He never goes anywhere.
"Dad!" I called out, walking into his bedroom, he isn't here.
"Maybe he's getting ice cream or something?" Brielle suggested but you could tell she didn't believe it herself. "I can try a locator spell?"
"Do one just in case." I told her. I mean he was an Alpha but he lost his mate and he's aged. He isn't nearly as powerful as he was.
She walked into his bathroom and pulled out his hairbrush before placing it on the floor in front of her.
"I need a map." She said getting up and digging through a bucket on one of the shelves.
She pulled a torn old one out and quickly grabbed a knife from the kitchen.
She placed everything where it should be and then picked up the knife.
"What are you doing with that?" I asked her getting nervous she would hurt herself.
"I need to spill my blood on the map for this to work." She said. "It's fine it'll heal quickly."
She placed it on her palm and sliced it open letting the blood drip down onto the map, staining it a deep shade of red.
She held her hands together and closed her eyes.
The blood started condensing, moving around on the map until it stopped in a certain spot. Her eyes quickly snapped open.
What is he doing in the woods?
"We should go find him." She said standing up. "He could be hurt." I got up with her and we quickly ran out of the house and into the woods.
"Stay in human form no matter what, if he is in trouble we can't let them know your also a wolf." I said to her as we started running into the woods.
I heard growls up ahead. I stopped and gave Brielle a push getting us both behind the brush scattered in the woods.
"What?" She whispered. I peeked up and saw maybe about eight rusty, orange colored wolves, walking through the woods.
I quickly mindlinked for backup we were outnumbered and I had a gut feeling this wasn't even all of them. My warriors and I really needed to get to the bottom of this issue and fast. This shouldn't be possible, not with the amount of trained warriors I have assigned on the borders.
I glanced over at Brielle and saw that her eyes were closed. I went to shake her when I heard whimpers coming from in front of us. I looked forward to see them all shaking intensely and then loud snaps. She just killed them all without even moving.
"You ok?" I asked and she just nodded.
We got out of our hiding spot and quickly moved onward. We heard even more growls.
"Brielle." I whispered. She must have sensed it too. Suddenly about maybe fifteen wolves came out from behind the bushes and trees, how did I not smell their scents?
I quickly shifted and stood next to her.
One of them started growling and stalking closer to us. We were surrounded.
I saw a wolf take a step closer to Brielle and I immediately snapped my jaws at it. Brielle's eyes were closed again except instead of killing them this time she sent them all flying back.
I quickly had her get on my back and I began sprinting away from them.
I heard multiple footsteps and growls from behind us. I was an alpha so I was faster than them. I could get us out of here...
Out of no where a grey blob rammed into me from the side sending me flying, Brielle flew off my back and I saw her roll and crash into a tree. I growled and stood up making sure this wolf stayed away from her.
It was slightly smaller than me. I growled at it warningly. That's when I heard the other rogues catch up. They were getting too close to Brielle for my liking. She was laying limp on the ground.
I should have had her just shift into wolf form this was all my fault. Again.
They all growled at me. I didn't understand this, none of these rogues had scents. It made no sense. I felt one of them go to nip at me but it was immediately sent flying. I glanced at Brielle to see her leaning against the tree with her hand raised. The rest of the wolves were on the ground writhing in pain. Blood dripped down the side of her face, making me turn murderous.
She was going to overuse her magic. If she hadn't already.
I immediately jumped at the grey wolf that was distracted and locked my jaw around its neck snapping it quickly. As much as I wanted to take my time ripping them apart limb by limb for daring to touch her, my priority was just getting us out of here, preferably alive.
"We need to keep at least one alive for questioning." I called back to her. She nodded and I heard the snaps and then all but one were dead. Well damn.
I heard footsteps running towards us however these were on foot not paw. I backed up towards Brielle and stood protectively in front of her.
I saw James and an older woman emerge from the protection of the trees.
I stepped away from Brielle and laid down for her to be able to get back on my back. She looked exhausted and she was struggling to keep her eyes open.
James and the woman walked over and helped her get up.
"This is Rosa she's the witch I was telling you about." James said and we all hurried to get my mate to the pack hospital.
