Transpordig

#this story contains vocabulary which is not currently used by our generation. Please refer below for the set of words used in the 30th century:

Telecopters - A vehicle, apparently used in the middle of the 30th century which could be used for teleporting in air. (Could be used only for short distances which are less than 10km in length.)

Drilletors - Machines used to often drill canals underground.

Video book - Written, printed or photographed  work consisting of pages made of copper connected along one side and bound in covers

Trenchestieries: Factories that produce oxygen in big masses, without any by- products.

Morphone - A phone which could be shape shifted into anything.

Mobo - Electrical devices that take orders in a restaurant.

Speenometers - Devices which when attached to a moving object, it's speed could be controlled.

"Are you sure it would work?" Pr. Drake asked over my shoulder. Pr. Drake and I are assigned to make a formula for a chemical that would make trees more useful to mankind. Who wants a useless lump of wood just sitting there, in the mud, giving us oxygen when we already have plenty of trenchestieries, producing them?

"If this chemical wouldn't work, nothing would." Our project was to make a chemical that would give mankind another means of transport (not that we lack telecopters) -  a one that could go through the earth. This way, we could get rid of the big, metallic airplanes. We went towards the big, banyan tree.. According to my predictions, it has to either start turning into a metallic solid, it's growth has increase rapidly or it must burst into explosions. "I call it the chemical 'G'!" I said as I raised the glass tube up, just to make it unnecessarily dramatic.

"Pour it already!" Drake said, impatiently. "Just a drop." I whispered to myself as I did it. I caught my breath as soon as it left the glass tube and started dropping in to the soil next to the tree.

I waited.

Five seconds passed without the slightest of movement. I turned around; sighing as I knew there would be no effect on that gigantic tree. But I was wrong. The sudden shaking of the ground caught me by surprise as I whipped around, only to see the tree half - sunk into the ground. "Are you sure about this, Greg?" Drake asked. I got so irritated, I wanted to say, ' I dunno.' But I knew better than to tense him, so I just nodded. This is what happens when you are the head of the chem. manufacture department. "If this thing stays stuck in the ground, we won't be able to see if my potion worked. Call the people with the Drilletors so we could get it out." I said to Drake, hoping I gave him some hope of this working. He pulled out his morphone, which was currently in it's watch form and dialed a number, then spoke into it, "Please send us a few people with drilletors." The men landed right on the spot we wanted them to. "Get to work. Dig the metal chunk out carefully. Your pay is a thousand dollars." I said. They set off to work.

"Your order is: '1 Jack fruit juice and a bag of French fries.'" Pear, the restaurant mobo said.

"Yeah," I confirmed.

"Are you out of your mind?! How could you be sitting here, eating French fries, while your invention is being dug out of the soil?" Drake exclaimed as he barged into the restaurant with the loudest kick of the door.

"You're right. I must share some French fries with you. Care to have some?" I said, tilting the fries in his direction.

He smacked his head with his hand. "Don't worry; they won't be done digging for an hour from now and I am not going out in that crowd where people have their video books and cameras and mikes. Besides, who could say 'no' to a bag of delicious French fries?

🍟🍟1 HOUR LATER🍟🍟

People crowded around with their video books, cameras and mikes as the workers dug out my invention.  The modified tree looked humongous. What was then a tree is now a full - sized robot with a hole on its head - which I suppose was to give out oxygen. The 'Transpordig' - Which I decided to call it - is in green and brown and it still had its leaves and trunk.  Below, there was a pointy needle - like structure that helps in digging through the earth. The model looked perfect - except, it needed a controlling device. I had to make something that the people could use to steer it and see where they are going. And, I had to do all this, keeping in mind that the tree is a living thing. One small mistake in doing so would kill the tree, making it not able to function. Not only that, I also had to see to it that there are proper tracks for this thing to move. I will have to construct traffic signals, roads and pathways. Sweat trickled down my forehead as I realized that this isn't a job any Tom, Dick or Harry could do.

"Pr. Drake," I called out to him. He nodded, while drinking coffee to show that he was listening. I told him about my thoughts and he agreed with everything I said, nodding at a constant pace as I spoke. I paid the workers and the left off their telecopters. I called Nikhil - my fried and doctor through my morphone and Leo - also my friend and an engineer. I told them about the whole thing, and about how I needed a doctor's help for the 'not - letting - it - die - part' and how I needed an engineer for the 'controlling - and - being - able - to see - where - they - are - going - part'. They all agreed to help and came as soon as I was done talking.

An hour passed by as the four of us were scribbling down our huge ideas for this new world below the earth. We jotted down the possible disadvantages and here is what we got:

Disadvantages:

1)The movement of the tectonic plates can cause the Transpordig to crash into them.

2)The gravitational pull of the earth changes as we go deeper.

3)There is a very high temperature as we get closer to the core of the earth.

We've gotten only those many disadvantages, but I can bet there will be many. This was when I realized how hard this could actually get. "Why don't we start a company of our own - call it 'The Transpordig manufacturers'?" Nikhil suggested. I got very excited on hearing this.

"One month Later"

"Let's first work on its design. Leo, it needs to have a camera and light for the driver to see where he is going. Nikhil, we need a material that doesn't kill the tree but, can also give light." I said, ruminating as I did. "I don't think a plant can survive electric current passing through it." Nikhil said. There was a long pause as we all started thinking of a solution to this. "The light source needn't be a 'part' of the tree, does it? I don't think the tree will die if we drill a hole in it, - especially a huge banyan tree. We could drill a hole and attach some light source which runs on battery. We could do the same for the driver's seat." Leo said. Drake was jotting down notes and sketching our ideas down. "Good idea," Drake said as his fingers raced on the video book. "I don't think it will need cameras, since the seat in open and has no roof.  It could make its own tracks as it moves, because those tectonic plates can crash into the Transpordig any time." I said. "The tree needs a supply of sunlight and water. From what I know, a plant can't stay without sunlight for about nine to ten days. But, it couldn't stay without water for more than three days." Nikhil said, giving us another problem to solve. "That's perfect! I've read that the record to go around the world was nine days. The transpordig, after going through thw world coul use some sunlight for some days. We should probably leave an open space with fertile soil at where it reaches. Maybe we should construct them after taking all the measurements and.." I said, eyeing Leo and hoping that he got my point and he nodded. I continued, "We'll have to attach a water pipe on the Transpordig, then." "And make it automatically pump out some water after every two days," Nikhil said, completing my thoughts. "Any one has the 'Disadvantages' list which we made two months back?" Drake asked, "That would help."  Leo pulled out the piece of paper, in which we had written it. "Here," he said, holding it out and setting it on the table. I read it out loud:

"Disadvantages:

1)The movement of the tectonic plates can cause the Transpordig to crash into them. Solutions?" I asked and waited as I thought about it myself. "I've got this. My team and I will work on setting up devices which would detect them and make the tree stop within one mile of radius." Leo said. Our company has many teams. One for building the tracks, one for helping out Leo, one for the manufacture of the transpordig and many other teams as we go on. We all nodded.

"2)The gravitational pull of the earth changes as we go deeper." I said and continued, "We could just use the same logic which they used in making rockets and also attach a speenometer." "Leave that to me, again." Leo said.

"3)There is a very high temperature as we get closer to the core of the earth." I recited, waiting for a solution and thinking about it myself. "Leo, do you think you could do this? You're the engineer guy, here." Drake said, eyeing him. "It's easy, you just have to use a - " he stopped for a second and reluctantly continued, "Never mind, but I think I've got this. It would take a really long time to explain it to you.", He said, giving us a look that says, 'I'm not sure about it myself, but I'll try'.

(Third person)

"Transpording number five is racing past number three - and it looks like number seven isn't ready to give up the fight yet as it races past number 2 in the lead - this is it, ladies and gentlemen, this is going to be the best race in the history of transpordig races ever!" Said the commentator, excitedly as the whole crowd was cheering for Transpordig number five.

Everyone watched the race –which was live streamed. The race was to go through the world. the record till now was eight days, but it has only been a year since transpordigs were invented. Everyone watched as they were being shown on a big screen.

"Looks like number five is on the lead and he is almost near the finish line - just two miles more - and he has done it!" The crowd cheered loudly and the commentator continued, "The award goes to - Greg! - Congratulations, Greg."

Greg collected his cup and stood in front of the whole crowd, smiling.
