C36
Later that evening, I grab my tray with both hands and turn around, I freeze when my eyes searches the room and stops on my table. They're all sitting there, waiting for me or at least I think that's why they haven't started eating. I can't go to that table now because I'm not very good at hiding my feelings and Caleb would definitely sense something's wrong the moment I start using strain tone to address him.
Besides I want to give Jessica some time to think about what we talked about. I can't be friends with someone that can't make up her mind about me, and I'm so sick and tired of spiraling when it comes to her.
Nate's feelings for me has changed, he doesn't see me as the badass girl that lost control during a game anymore, he sees me as a danger to him and everyone around me and I'm smart to know when someone is trying to draw line in our friendship.
Alicia, on the other hand seems to be on my side but for how long because Jessica started the exact same way.
Caleb is an imposter that I don't want to spend another second with without gathering more intel.
Shaking my head, I turn around and head towards the exit. Dinner doesn't finish until another hour, I still have enough time to set up my research station at the library.
I don't miss the look on the students entering the cafeteria faces as I walk past them to the hallway. We aren't supposed to eat anywhere else but fuck the rules. I make my own rules and it's not as if anyone would catch me, most of the staff have turned in for the night, so I'm in the clear.
The hallway that leads to the library is quiet, it's no surprise because student hardly go into the library. I walk into the library without anyone seeing me. Mr. Groff is nowhere to be found, he's probably taking the House supervisor role seriously and with the female's tournament coming up, I'm sure they are all busy making preparation especially since the special guests and outside judges will be arriving tomorrow.
The library is darker than usual, the only light available is the one reflecting from the florescent lights above. I make my way to the roll of monitors that I hardly ever use, mainly because I prefer to go through textbooks and search anything I need on my phone but today I know I won't find anything about Caleb Sinclair on my phone because I've already checked, which leaves me no choice but to use this, besides the computers aren't filtered for anything magic, so it's perfect for this.
I balance my tray on one hand before pulling out the chair in front of the third monitor and sit. I drop my tray on my lap and turn on the monitor, knowing it isn't idle to eat in the library or around the computer but I'll be super careful not to get any food on the keyboard.
While I eat for the computer to boot, I make a mental note on what to search. Caleb Sinclair.
It doesn't take long for the system to load and connect to internet. I drop the spoon and move my hand to the mouse and click on the browser.
I look left and right, searching for a place to put my tray, it's time to get to work and I need enough room. My eyes glue on the chair next mine, shrugging, I reach to pull it backward and move my tray on it before raising my butt up to grab my phone in my back. I unlock it and scroll down the apps until I see what I'm looking, I click on the clock icon and set an alarm for the next forty five minutes.
When I do things like this, I tend to lose time and my punishment starts today, so I need to be early and present especially after I missed yesterday's.
I place my phone on the desk and drop my hands on the seat before lifting myself up a little to be able to push the chair forward, I stop when my chest hit the edge of the desk before leaning back against the chair, leaving enough space between the screen and me.
I move the mouse to the search bar and type in 'Caleb and Claire Sinclair 1984', and click the enter button. The search takes a while to load because the browser isn't updated, why would they update it when everyone has phone, nobody uses the old thing anyway.
The search results appears on the screen and there are lots of articles about them. I click on the first one because it says 'Witch Hunt'. The page appears and I begin to read.
"Why are googling Caleb?" I yelp, jumping out of my seat at the sound of Alicia's voice after some minutes of reading. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," she apologizes and comes to stand behind me, she bends her body and drop her hand on the desk to get a closer look at the screen.
"Don't ever sneak up on me like that," I warn her after freaking out a little. "What are you doing here?" I demand and move the mouse to click on the minimize button to hide the page.
"Why were you reading about Caleb? And what are those things about a massacre?" She leans away after firing her questions.
"What are you doing here, Alicia?"
"I saw you leave the cafeteria and waited for you to come back. I thought you forgot something and when you didn't, I followed behind." She shrugs.
"How did you know I was here?"
"You're always here. So answer my question, why are you reading about Caleb?"
I frown and pick up my phone to check the time, I have like ten more minutes. I better round up before I get there late.
"Cami–"
"It's none of your fucking business!" I snap and she gasps in response. I close my eyes and clench my fist before opening my eyes and turning my head to look at her. "Alicia, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap at you. I have a lot on my mind and I don't–" I stop to sigh because frankly I don't know what's going on and with what I just read, I'm just having a hard time dealing with it and it's not fair to take it out on her, she didn't do anything. "I'm sorry."
"It's fine. It's okay, it's my bad. I shouldn't have sneaked up on you like that, I should be the one apologizing." She shrugs like it doesn't matter but her eyes betrays her. "Anyway, I'll leave you to it," she says and turns her heels and walk away.
"Oh fuck." I mutter and quickly stand up from my seat and go after her. "Alicia, wait!" I call after her and she stops. "Listen, I'm sorry, okay? I shouldn't have–" she cut me off.
"You have nothing to be sorry about, Cami. It's my fault," she says and sniffles but she isn't crying. "Look, I know you're dealing with a lot right now and I just wish you'd talk to me. I'm here for you."
That melts my heart because I always depend on Jessica to be there for me, but she's been pulling away, and that doesn't mean I'm looking to depend on someone else but it'll nice to tell someone else what's going on.
"You're right, I haven't been straight forward with you and I intend to change that. Just promise me that what I'm about to tell you won't leave this room."
I'm playing a dangerous game by telling her but she's given me no choice.
"I promise." She nods.
"Okay, so I... You know how I left school after you guys tried to kill me?" She nods, her face curls in shame and embarrassment, so I reach to touch her shoulder. "I'm not judging or blaming you for anything, I know it wasn't you. Anyway, hmm... I was attacked like four times and they were going to kill me. I found out that there's a bounty on my head. Someone wants me dead and Caleb doesn't make any sense, you know? Everything started right after he arrived and I'm not pointing fingers or anything but I think he's here to kill me."
She gasps and moves her hands to cover her mouth. "Cami..." She looks like she's about to cry before moving forward to wrap around me. "Why would anyone want you dead?"
"Countless reasons," I say with a chuckle. "I'm not sure if you know but I'm fucking annoying and I can be a real fucking bitch when I want to be, which is almost all the time."
She pulls away and shakes her head, she doesn't find me amusing. "And Caleb? Did he show any signs of being a murderer? He seems cool to me."
"I know but he told me his twin sister died. And based on the research I just did, it shows that Caleb and Claire Sinclair died thirty eight years ago."
"It might just be a coincidence," she tells me.
"Oh, Alicia, you have no idea what I've been through. Nothing is a coincidence to me and I need proof to prove that Caleb is a coincidence, hence the research."
She nods. "Anything you need, I'll help you."
I smile. "Thanks, for now I just want to find out more about the Sinclair twins and I don't want Caleb to suspect anything, think you can do that? Be around him and not squirm?"
"Sure. And Cami, I hope one day you can trust me enough to tell me about that past you mentioned."
"I told you about this, I already trust you."
It's easier to tell her what she wants to hear than lie to her.
"Okay, then," she sighs in relief and adds, "so how do we do this?"
"My alarm will go off any moment from now, so tomorrow?" She nods. "Perfect, let me go grab my stuff and fill you in on what I already know on the way to the kitchen."
I head back to the chair to grab the tray and my phone. I return to the browser and close the tab before clearing the history, I don't want anyone knowing anything about this or my involvement in it.
I can't stop thinking about what I just did. Is it wise, telling Alicia about Caleb? For one she's Alyssa's sister and even if they are different and don't get along, I can't just trust her like that. And second, she's friends with Caleb.
I mean, did I just make things worse?
"There are so many articles about the Sinclair twins. They were born witches to human parents. They're parents tried to killed them when they were seven right after they started displaying powers and Claire killed them by setting them on fire. They were into the system after that and moved from house to house until they were eighteen, where they were both killed."
I gave Alicia the summary, leaving the most important part of the story because I don't trust her yet.
"They sound evil and I can't imagine our Caleb doing that, so–"
"Hey guys," Alicia and I freeze at the sound of Caleb's voice. "Where have you been? We've been looking all over for you." He adds as Jessica and Nate comes into view.
"Yeah, Cams, where did you eat your dinner? We didn't see you." Nate asks.
I try not to look at Jessica but I know she's looking at Alicia and I, she's probably wondering what she and I are doing together.
"In the chemistry lab, I like smell of chemicals, can't survive without them."
"You are a very good convincing liar, Cami but that was crap, try again." Nate says.
"I would love to tell you all about the new elements I learned from the periodic table but I have to do the dishes." I spin it.
"Oh, right." He pulls Jessica towards him and presses a kiss on her temple. "Need any help? We are much, so you'll be in there for a while."
"Nothing I can't handle and thanks for offering but no, the headmaster said no help and no magic." I reply.
"Sucks to be you right now, anyway, Caleb here has something for you."
My eyes snaps to Caleb who is staring at the floor. Is he shy? I mean, come on! Is this guy really an imposter? Well, then again the headmaster said he's an actor playing a role. Maybe he's role is to pretend he has a crush on me, in order to get close to me.
"What?" I ask him.
He reaches into his pocket and remove an mp with earphone. "I made you a playlist to listen to when you're work so you won't feel bored."
"Oh, that's thoughtful of you, thank you," I say a fake smile as I reach to collect the mp from him.
Nate clears his throat. "Anything else you want to ask, Cami?"
I look at Caleb who's making his nervousness show and really uncomfortable for me. He scratches the back of his neck and asks, "I was wondering if you'd like to go on a date with me. I know this is a boarding school and all but I have plans already, so what do you say? Go on a date with me?"
What? Definitely not expecting that.
