"You sure this is going to work?" Jessica asks for the umpteenth time.
My gaze moves from the door where it's been burning holes, waiting for Damian to return, it's been almost two hours. Between Jessica creating a fake map using her illusion spell and me trying to remember the spell that found the body of the Roman in the first place, we couldn't keep track of the time and it's almost midnight. If we get started now, we should be able to find him before tomorrow evening.
"It worked the last time and since this is an illusion, it'll give us an actual place to pinpoint," I reply and sit criss cross on the floor with Jessica kneeling on one knee in front of me, her hands on the floor as she keeps the maps stable. I think I know how her powers work, she connects with nature and can control it. She tends to get focus when she's feeling the surface of the earth. Now the hard surface floor is made of woods and even though it's gone through some process before it becomes the woodwork it is now, it was made from tree and it's part of the earth.
"Light 'em up," she says, tilting her head to the side.
We don't have chalk or candle to keep the circle enclosed, and we have nothing magical to use as a beacon, so we improvised, using bread crumbs. No one said it was compulsory to use chalk and candles. Jessica graceful created an elven star enclosed in a circle using the bread crumbs and the paper bags to shock each point of the star. I'm sitting in the middle with the fake map in front of me.
"Ignisia." I whisper and the paper bags lights up. We don't have much time, we can only do the spell until the paper burn out. Jessica is doing two things: making the map appear and keeping the bread crumbs from blowing away.
"Now! Cami."
I cut my palm with the paper cutter we found in one of the drawers and squeeze the blood on the fake map, the blood passed through it and drops on the floor because the map isn't really here but it will still point us to the right direction.
I close my eyes and say the spell, "Klunz dy alyi gufutin locoso Roman Benedict."
The blood begins to move and it does someone different this time, unlike last time when it split into four places, all the drops of blood I was about to squeeze in form together before moving in a single direction, Concord Hills.
"Concord Hills, I was right. It's here." I look at Jessica to see her struggling. It's draining her because the floor isn't exactly what she needs and it's taking everything in her to keep everything stable.
"Can you tell where?" She asks, stretching her neck to see but she can't get the actual image.
"If the map was enlarged, I think I can," I look at her and like she already know what I'm about to say, she gives me the 'do not' look but I can't not do it. "Do you think you can zoom in, please?" I beg, giving her the puppy eyes.
She groans and drops her second hand on the floor. "You realize this isn't Google map," she mutters and spread her fingers, the map begins to zoom in on the location.
I lean my head closer to see clearly. "It looks like a Cafe, and it's just the one." I tell her and lean away.
"Are you sure?" She asks.
I nod. "I'm very sure. You can cut it out."
She removes her hand from the ground and everything disappears, the crumbs blows away. "It's just a cafe, how hard can it be?" Jessica asks.
"How hard can it be? I mean there can't be that many Cafe in Concord Hills... Right?"
"You remember the direction of the cafe, we'll trace it." She says.
"Yeah, I do." I sigh and look at the door again, shaking my head when the person I want to see desperately refuses to walk through. "We should clean up and get some sleep, God knows we need it since we'll be doing much walk tomorrow."
****
I can't sleep. It's the feeling I get before every test or exam. I'm anxious and nervous. I'm going searching for a ghost and Damian might be right and I might not like what I find but I have to try. If there's any chance that this could answer my question about his spirit that I've been seeing, I need to know. Also, I need to say goodbye properly. I have something I'd like to get off my chest and it would be nice to be free of the burden and guilt I've been carrying since he died.
Tossing around, I settle on my side and watch the couch where Damian is meant to be sleeping but see an empty space. Where did he go? Is he really that angry at the situation? It's–
The door cracks open slowly. My eyes widen in excitement as I watch him enter the room quietly in the dark. He steps into the room and shut the door, being careful not to wake us. He thought we're asleep.
I close my eyes when he walks through towards me. I feel his hand on my face as he pushes the hair falling off my face. "Don't hate me," he whispers and leans down to press a kiss against my cheek before departing.
Don't hate me.
What does he mean by that?
*****
"Are you sure this is the place?" Damian asks behind me.
"Of course." I nod.
The truth is I'm not sure about anything. We've been walking around the town searching for Cafe. I can't exactly tell Jessica and Damian that my map reading skills aren't good. It was visible on the map that his body was in a Cafe but I don't know which one it is and I suck at directions.
"You said that the last five time and here we are. It's not too late to cut this mission off. We can go back to the motel and regroup, I'm tired and hungry. We've been walking for hours. The map said a cafe but how sure are we that his body his here. What do we tell the owner? We're looking for a dead body, have you seen one? The map might not be accurate, I..."
I tune in Jessica's whine when I see a familiar strike stature comes into my view as I look around the cafe from out here. The guy has his back turn to me, he's speaking to someone.
From where I'm standing, the person looks exactly like Roman Benedict. Not just the familiar black shirt he was wearing on the day he died but his stature. I would recognize that head anywhere even if he's buzz off all his hair to a military cut. I still would know it's him. I watch him nod at the person he's speaking to before turning away his face comes to view.
I gasp.
"Roman."
"What?" Jessica asks before coming to stand beside me. "What did you just say?"
Like I'm on autopilot, I raise my finger and point at him. "Roman."
"What the hell? He's alive!"
"Oh, my God! Oh, my God!" The biggest smile appears on my face as I dash into the Cafe. I hear a protest cry from Damian but I don't wait. I open the door and go after Roman.
My hand goes around his neck when I reach his from. "Oh, my God! You're alive. I can't believe you're alive." I tighten my hold against him, burying my head against his chest. I grin when I inhale his familiar scent.
I can't believe this. It's like I'm dreaming. Roman is alive. I don't know what to say.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing right now?" I freeze at the sound of his voice. In the whole time I knew him, he never spoke me to me like this. Cold, distant and foreign.
I unwrap my arms around his neck and take a step back. I shiver when I see the look on his face and just like his tone, this is also cold and foreign. It's like he's not happy to see me.
"Roman, it's me. What are you–"
"What the fuck are you going on about lady? Are you high or something?"
I frown. "Why are you acting like this? Like you don't know me. I'm Cami. Cami."
I sigh like he's done with this conversation. "Saying your name twice won't make it sound important. I don't know who the fuck you think you are but if you have noticed I'm working and who the fuck are you calling Roman."
That the final blow.
What does he mean by that?
I reach to grab his hand to search him memory but before I do anything, he yank his hand off me and glare at me. "Don't make me kick you out, lady."
"Josh? What's going on here?" Another voice chirps in, I don't even bother to look to know the person is talking to Roman.
"I don't know, the woman needs her head checked." He mutters and walks past me, making sure to bump his shoulder with mine, causing me to stagger back before regaining my footing.
No. No, no, no, no, no. This can't be right. It's can't be right.
I curl my fingers inward in a tight fist before walking out. I open the door and my eyes falls on Damian who refuses to meet my gaze.
"Hey, what happened? Is it really him?" Jessica comes to stand in front of me, asking curiously.
I don't answer her, I walk straight to Damian. "It is Roman. But somehow he doesn't know me. He doesn't even know he's Roman because he answered to Josh. He's alive, Damian, and he doesn't know who I am. I wasn't going to say anything about it but now I need to know. You've never lied to me but you've never been completely truthful either. I'm going to ask you something and I need you to tell me the truth. Did you know he was alive?"
He raises his head up and meet my gaze. "Yes."
"What the hell?" Jessica snaps, "you knew he was alive."
"Don't go chasing a ghost. You might not like what you find." I repeat his words to him. "Everytime. Every fucking time."
"I didn't know you were dealing with his death. I thought you were okay." That's his argument.
"It's not about me not dealing with his death. It's about you and your father thinking it's okay to manipulate my life. That's all you've ever done. You say you care about me but to me it's just looks like you want to control ever aspect of my life. And that's not fair, Damian. I never expected this from you. You lied to me."
I can't even begin to think about what's happening right now.
"Camille–"
"I want to know everything. Tell me everything and I mean everything single details regarding Roman."
He takes a deep breath and nods.
Good.
