C23
Damian and I walk back into the house hand in hand. Jessica and Ray are standing so far away from each other. I don't miss the surprise look on her face when she sees us enter together and her eyes goes wide as they falls on our conjuncted hands.
"You two might have settled whatever it was that was going on between the both of you"–Ray pointing his fingers at Damian and I–"but the tension still lingers on. You need to make up with her before we talk about our plan."
I don't have to ask to know who her is. Aside from the fact that Jessica is the only other woman here, Ray saw the bickering that happened between us before I went out. And he's right, I should talk to Jessica. We need to have a serious talk where I'm not angry and she isn't being a bitch. That's the only way we can move past this. I can't promise forgiveness because I struggle with letting things go but I'll try because it's Jessica. She's my best friend and I need her more than anything.
"Our plan?" Damian steps in front of me, not releasing my hand but blocking me from Ray's gaze. "I think you're missing the point here, Raymond Dark. There is no 'our', there's just Camille, Jessica and me."
I step beside him, not letting him keep me benched. Damian says so many things without opening his mouth, that's one of the things I find hard to read because his face shows all. Ray strike me as a man with little words and no face story. He and Damian are alike in a way. Something happened between these two and I need to know just how much they can't tolerate each other, but first I need to study the way they relate. When Damian and Roman had that face off at the library, I knew that Roman hated Damian. I'm not getting that kind of vibe here.
"Damian, always showing up when he's never needed. Tell me, didn't your queen warn you about me?" Ray lips curls up in a wicked smirk. He's trying to annoy Damian but he doesn't know Damian doesn't get annoyed easily.
Damian tightens his grip around my hand. I'm not sure if he's doing this consciously or I'm wrong and Ray is getting to him. "Lee, was it?" That wipe the smirk off Ray's face. Okay this is getting interesting. "That was name you used when you lived with Kai..." I watch Ray's face, it grows hard and angry. Whatever Damian said is working, it's a breaking point for him. "Zazie. That was her name. Zazie."
"You keep her name out of your mouth!" Ray's face goes red as he takes a step forward and waves his hands before directing it at Damian. I remove my hand from his and look around as the house begins to shake. Out of nowhere, knifes begins to burst out of the wall and heading straight for Damian.
I step in front of him and raise my hands up to stop them with my telekinesis power before they reach us, but the moment I opened my mind and controlled the flying object I knew Ray's power is too strong and I can't take him.
"I wanted to help you, Camille. I promised myself that I wouldn't let what happened to them happen to you but now I see that you're as just as blind as they were. She was right about you. You are your family's legacy. You are a daughter of El. I'm sorry but this is where I break my vow and let you fend for yourself. I've seen your mind. I've searched your head. I know what you dream about that you don't remember when you wake. They are lying to you. They're just using you and when the time comes you'll see I'm right but I will be on the other side of the coin. Farewell, Camille."
He claps his hands and a big powerful energy surge blast through the room. My back hitting something is the last thing I see before everything goes black.
*****
'Zazie. That was her name. Zazie.'
'She was right there you.'
"Cami." A distant distorted voice calls as hands shakes my body. "Cami? Cami, are you awake? Can you hear me?" The voice sounds clear now and I can hear them calling me.
I blink my eyes open, it's going from blur to clear visual to see Jessica hovering over me. "Oh, thank God, you're okay." She closes her eyes and exhale like she's been holding her breath for long.
"Fuck!" I mutter as I try to keep my eyes opened. What is that light?
"What happened?" I ask, squeezing my eyes shut before rubbing my hands over my face.
"You hit your head and some of the knife went through you," she answers.
Argh! Again!
I open my eyes and shift upward, moving to sit and rest my back against the headboard. "That's why it hurt like a bitch," it doesn't actually hurt but I get the gist, "can't say I miss the feeling." I look past Jessica's head to see an old model LG television and I'm talking the ancient ones with the butt.
Placing my palms flat on the hard bed–now I know where the body ache came from. I push myself up slightly to sit comfortably before reaching for the pillow beside me and placing it behind me because the wooden headboard is really digging into my back.
When I'm comfortable enough, I prop my feet and look at Jessica, asking, "where are we?"
"A Motel," she answers and adds, "Ray destroyed the house."
"Oh snap!" He told me he was renovating, I guess he'll just build from the ground.
I take a quick look around the room again and frown. Something is missing or someone. "Where's Damian?"
"He went to get us something to eat."
That makes sense.
"Oh, cool." I nod and look away from here. This is awkward as fuck.
"How do you feel?" She asks.
I straighten my back as I take in a deep breath, and slouch before exhaling. "Good. I feel good actually. I expected more pain but I'm all healed up, the only pain I feel is from this bed, what is it made of, stones?" Trying to be funny.
She chuckles. "That's good to hear and I'm sure you've experienced worse."
She isn't wrong.
"Yeah." I reply and clear my throat.
Running my tongue over my lips before tucking my bottom lip inward and swiping my teeth over it as I purse my lips.
I hate this. I'm angry at her but she's here. She's right here with me. I can't say I'm not grateful because I'm happy to see her if even though I will never admit it to her face. But I can only get angry for so long and she's here. I know we need to talk and I believe now is a perfect time.
"Listen, I–"
"Cami, I sw–"
We say at the same time. My eyes meets her as we chuckle nervously. Look at us, behaving like strangers.
"You go first," I say, giving her the floor.
She shakes her head, waving her hands at me at the same. "Oh, no, you go, sounds like what you have to say is important."
I cock my eyebrows. "And yours isn't?" I don't give her the chance to answer the rhetorical question. "Jessica, speak."
Her lips part, she sighs and closes her eyes before speaking. "I'm sorry for everything. First, I'm sorry for having sex on your bed, it was wrong and I'm so sorry for that, you have no idea how sorry I am. Second, I'm sorry about what I said at the lake, your anger were expected and justified, it was wrong of me to dismiss you like that. I was stupid to leave the room. I'm sorry for eating breakfast with Alyssa that day. Nate and I only did that because Alicia didn't want to eat breakfast alone with her sister, you knew I would never do anything to hurt you and I did. And I'm sorry. And today I said somethings I regret. You are not a burden and I only said those things out of anger. I didn't help you because I want something in return."
She shifts on the bed, going on her knees before moving forward. "Please Cami, please forgive me. I miss you. I miss my best friend. Nothing has been the same without you."
I feel bad for how I've treated her because looking at her face now, it's so sad. She looks like she's seconds away from crying and I don't want that.
"Jessica–" she interrupts me.
"Please, I–" I cut her off. She doesn't know what I have to say and she needs to hear it.
"Okay! Fine, I'm sorry too for blowing up on you. Damian rejected me and I came and saw in my bed with Nate, I just got so mad and jealous. You have someone that you love and loves you in return but the guy I like didn't even care but it's all right now." I assure her.
Her face lights up but the expression soon fades as something crosses her mind. "About the killing stuff..." She trails off. My lips parts. She continues. "I didn't know what was going on. But I remember everything. I can't believe I almost killed you, I–"
I reach forward to grab her hand. "That wasn't you." I whisper and keep my gaze on her hand, her long fingers decorated with rings but the distinctive ring in a shape of a snake wraps around her middle finger catches my attention.
I guess I needed to tell her that it wasn't her fault for me to believe it. It wasn't her fault, I know but the idea of having my friends kill me doesn't sit well, even if they were being mind controlled.
"I know but what was it?" She asks curiously.
"Ray said someone put a bounty on my head, seven hundred million, can you believe it? Seven hundred million. Who's got that kind of money? I mean, am I worth that much? More than half a billion fuck–"
"What?" Jessica interrupts me.
"What?" I frown.
"Cami, someone put a bounty on your head."
I wide my eyes but not in a dramatic way, just faking shock. "I know, I just said it." Blinking twice.
"Who would do something like that? Oh, my God! Is that why we almost killed you?" She stands up and begins to pace the room. "Do you know who it is?"
I groan and close my eyes. "Were you even listening? Someone put a bounty on my head. Someone that I don't know. Ray was going help me find them but he split, that coward, anyway, who do you think he meant when he said 'she was right about you'?"
Jessica stops pacing and looks at me like I've grown a second head. "Someone is out there to kill you and you're thinking about what Raymond Dark said. Who cares what Raymond Dark said? His name is freaking Raymond Dark?"
I raise my hand to stop her from freaking out. "Can you stop saying his full name? I know it's weird, you having to explain to people why your last name is Dark but Raymond is a good name."
"Camille, be serious!"
I frown. "Okay, bestie, you've known for like half a minute and you're already acting like I'm dead. Chill, no one is coming here and if they are, they'll lead me to the person I'm looking for and speaking of being serious. I have a question to ask you and I need you to be honest with me."
"Okay, go ahead."
"The spell you gave me on the fake Christmas day, you said it would keep me company. I've been seeing Roman since that day and it's getting worse. I did research on the spell and found nothing. What did you do to me?"
She sighs. "This again, Cami, I already told you. I just wanted to help, you were lonely and Damian thought it would be a good idea to find you something to do like solve a magical mystery. He gave me spell and that's all. I don't know much about it, you're going to have to ask Damian."
"Ask Damian what?"
Our head turns to the direction of his voice, we didn't hear him come in. He standing with three paper bags.
I can't think about anything, only what Jessica said. 'He gave me the spell'.
"Who's hungry?" He asks, looking at me.
Not you, Damian. Anyone but you.
