Don't Let Go

"Jack," Maddie shook her husband awake, "The police are here again."

"What about Maddie my dear?" Jack grumbled, still as tired as ever.

"They want to charge us a fine because Danny apparently hasn't been to school in over a month!"

"That's impossible! Danny leaves the house every morning at 7:20... just in time to get to school!" Jack protested as Maddie shook her head.

"No, Jack. Danny has been lying to us, I'm telling you. He hasn't been to school for over a month!" Jack finally realized the weight of his wife's words and shot out of bed, heading straight downstairs to speak with the police.

"I'll go get Danny then... so we can all talk about this together." Maddie said to herself, rubbing her temples as she walked up the stairs to get to Danny's room. She knocked a few times, with no answer.

"Oh he must be n Jazz's room again..." Maddie shook her head and walked down the hall to Jazz's room. With a deep breath, Maddie knocked softly.

"Danny? Danny it's me, can I come in?" Her voice was barely above a whisper, yet she knew that Danny could hear her. Her hands shook as she reached for the doorknob for ever since they had learned what Danny had become... Maddie especially, was frightened of her son. The door slowly creaked open but Danny didn't bother to look up as he continued to rock himself back and forth.

"D-Danny?" Maddie called again. She sighed as her son stopped rocking and she carefully knelt down next to him.

"Honey, we have to talk okay?" she paused but Danny said nothing, "The police are here, apparently because you haven't been going to school? Well you leave the house everyday, your father and I both know that.... But if you don't go to school then where do you go?" The silence was uncomfortable for Maddie, she stood.

"We just want to make sure you're safe Danny.... If you don't want to talk now that's fine. But you have to talk to us sooner or later." She glanced around the room and then back at Danny one last time, "We love you Danny. Please don't blame yourself for this."

The next day, Friday. Danny dragged himself off Jazz's bedroom floor and into his own room to change into fresh clothes. The process was quick. He never even bothered to brush out his hair or look in the mirror. What was the point anyway? He had murdered his own sister and he has to live with that. Shoving a few things into his backpack, Danny made his way downstairs and was about to go out the door until Jack called out to him in an angry voice.

"And where are you going Danny?" Jack asked. Danny didn't even turn to face his father, he just shrugged and reached for the door handle. Jack was up in a flash, standing in the way of Danny and the now ajar door.

"I will ask you again... where are you going Danny?" Jack asked more sternly this time.

"S-school." Danny's barely audible voice was heard from under his mess of black hair.

"You better be! Because I will be calling the school today and I will be making sure that you have been there! Trust me Danny my boy, if you haven't been to school today I'm going to-!"

"You're going to what Jack?!" Maddie ran from the kitchen, hearing her husband's yelling. Jack immediately tensed up and moved towards his wife.

"Maddie, you know very well that I would never do anything to hurt Danny. But you have to threaten them very now and again to get your point across!"

"How dare you treat our son like this! You can't yell at him like that and then claim to be trying to help him!" Maddie had tears running down her cheeks, "Jazz's death is tearing us apart. But that is only because we are being so hard on each other and blaming one another for things that we should have done or didn't do... Jack please! Let's just work this out like a family and maybe then we can figure out how to deal with this!" Maddie collapsed in Jack's arms and he held her close.

"I sorry Maddie, I'm so sorry. I just don't know how to deal with this... you're right. We should work this out... together." Jack wiped Maddie's tears away and gave her a small smile.

"Now apologize to Danny and we can all talk this out-" But just as Maddie turned to acknowledge Danny, all they were met with was a closed door.

Danny stood before the large door and knocked carefully, the secret password that the two had made up since Danny had gone there the first time. He shifted uncomfortably as the many locks of the doors were unlocked. Finally the door swung open and a bright face met the young boy's sad and grieving one.

"Little badger, I'm glad you're here again. Please come in and make yourself at home..."
