WINIFRED SHELBY was the first in the family to have a bright future in front of her. She was on her way to finish schooling and head off to university to study business. Winnie wanted nothing more than to help her family succeed more than it had already begun to do at the time.

But things in Small Heath are never that easy or simple. It wasn't going to be something Winnie could get without consequence. She knew it would require hard work and determination but despite all her efforts, she still slipped up and found a distraction.

He was a sweet boy with a funny voice. Winnie found him to be so interesting and quickly became enamored with him. Even though she grew up hearing warnings and horror stories about the way men treat women, Winnie couldn't help but like him. He made her laugh.

Winnie found that with him, she forgot about the bullshit surrounding her family. She didn't think about how Arthur was losing his mind or how Tommy was a knob for ignoring his one chance at love. And she definitely didn't think about her poor excuse of a father, Arthur Senior.

It was like she found peace with the boy. She loved it, she loved him even. But all good things must come to an end at some point, right?
