chapter eleven — stepping into the beasts lair
Mateo lathered more sunscreen onto his arms and chest; the sun was beaming harsher today than any other and he really didn't feel like getting burned by its rays. The older women laying themselves out on their chairs gawked at him while he shifted uncomfortably in his seat. One of them gave him a small seductive wave and he placed his sunglasses back on, ignoring their looks and crossing his arms over his chest.
"Don't they all have husbands or something?" A voice below him asked amusingly and Mateo smiled in recognition. He climbed down from his post to greet his friend.
Sam beamed brightly, a towel draped across his shoulder and a small tote bag tucked beneath it. The pool would never have been his first choice of a hangout spot, but because he had the day off he thought he could give his friend a visit. He hadn't seen the eldest Vasquez in three days.
Mateo grimaced, "It's alarming how many married women have made passes at me." He reached to take his sunglasses off and placed them in his pocket.
"I bet Hargrove loves the attention." Sam rolled his eyes and the two peaked over at Billy who looked anything but normal; he was wearing a long sleeve shirt and a towel draped over his legs. Typically, it was hard to get him to put any shirt on if he didn't have to. Mateo figured it might have something to do with how strange he was acting the other night.
He shook his head and let out a deep exhale, "I hate that guy. Apparently, he was sleeping with one of the moms, or at least attempted to, but now he and Heather are going steady?" Sam drew his eyebrows together, matching his friends' confusion, and scoffed.
"Heather Holloway? Her dad would never let a guy like Billy hang around his daughter and I would know, we grew up together and he was never fond of me hanging around their house." He remarked and Mateo threw his hands up in frustration. He thought it was extremely peculiar how Heather's parents seemed to be wrapped around Billy's finger the previous night. She was always going on about how she loved her dad but hated how he always stuck his nose in her relationships. Maybe Billy was just a really good smooth-talker.
"That's exactly what I was thinking!" He groaned and Sam couldn't help but smile. He noticed the small strands of Mateo's brown hair that turned golden underneath the sunlight, like they were dipped in honey. His skin was tanner then when they first met – which he knew was due to the constant sun exposure.
"What?" Mateo laughed and Sam shook his head, his gentle smile never leaving his face.
"You just look in your element, that's all — like you're fitting right in finally. You look happy." He whispered to which Mateo's smile faltered as he thought of the recent events he found himself in – despite the looming shadow that hovered over him constantly, he was trying to be happy.
If he were to be completely honest, he was glad that he got to go on a detective escapade with his sister and step inside her world for a moment. Life was still chaotic and messy, but he realized that amongst it all they had each other. They always did.
"Well, my sister and I have been getting along really well," He said and Sam raised both his eyebrows in surprise. "Yeah! I took your advice and tried stepping into her shoes and empathizing with her. It reminded me of when we were kids and she was attached to my hip. It's been nice, thanks." He gave his friend a small smile as he shoved his hands into his pockets. Sam placed both his palms on Mateo's shoulders.
"See! I knew deep down inside the tin-can man had a heart. You really oughta start trusting in my advice, Vasquez." He teased, dropping his hands back to his side.
Mateo waved him off, "Yeah, yeah. I gotta get back to work but I'll catch you later." The lifeguard returned to his post, watching Sam walk off toward one of the pool chairs. He then slyly glanced over to his left where he noticed the group of kids hiding behind a car.
El felt a pair of eyes on her the moment they stepped onto the pool grounds, however every direction she looked there was no one to be found. Their presence lingered and even though it didn't scare her, it did annoy her that she couldn't find the source. That was until she turned her gaze to her right and locked eyes with the person that accompanied her and Max the other night. He looked away quickly, blowing his whistle at some kids who were running near the pool.
She nudged her friend's arm, gaining her attention. "He's here today too," She informed Max who looked in the direction she motioned her head toward. "There is something about him that's different, his sister as well."
She felt it the night they drove the two of them back to Max's. Irene seemed out of touch, confused even, as she stared out the window. It felt like they knew something that her and Max didn't; she couldn't help but wonder why they offered so quickly to bring them to Heather's. Even going as far to get off the car with them. It wasn't a scary feeling the two siblings gave her but it was one of mystery. She just wanted to know what they were up to.
"Maybe it's because you don't know them that well yet," Max tried to reason. "Irene is really nice but also keeps to herself and Billy doesn't really dig her brother, but he seems alright in my book." She let out a soft chuckle while she shrugged, "I wouldn't say they're a duo we should be worried about."
Mateo watched three of the boys from the group race toward the men's locker room and shook his head, still feeling El's eyes burning into the side of his body. Something was up with the five of them and whether he liked it or not, he was going to get caught in the chaos and he'd be lying if he said a part of him wasn't a little excited.
Back at the mall, Irene sat tucked in one of the bathroom stalls trying to signal her brother. Her shaky and sweaty hands gripped her walkie tightly as she paced the tiled floor. Over at Scoops Robin and Dustin were trying their hardest to get Erica Sinclair, Lucas' sister, to help them infiltrate the secret area where the boxes were being kept.
Mateo sighed, "Yes? I'm on the clock, Irene." His voice was low, and she could hear the sounds of pool commotion in the distance.
She gave her walkie a bored look before retorting back, "Oh, I'm sure everyone will survive! I'll make it quick. Okay, this whole mission thing is progressing very quickly and while I don't mind saving the world I'm actually mortified because we could get into some serious trouble and I mean serious. And there's guys with guns. Guns, Teo! I don't know if I can handle this and I don't even know where to begin with letting these people know about my gift, even though they don't seem phased at all by these Russian bad guys, I am still terrified of what they're going to think when I tell them. We have a child, a literal child, that they're bribing right now as we speak. What am I supposed to do, I'm in too deep now. What is mom going to think–"
"Irene!" Her brother's voice crackled loudly in the device. "Breathe," He reminded her and she took a deep breath, letting her body slide down the wall. She held up the walkie to her forehead, trying to find the words to encompass her feelings.
"I just," She shut her eyes tightly. "What are we even doing, Mateo?" She asked in defeat.
"Irene, we did not dig this far so that you could get scared and back out now. Maybe we're not detectives or national heroes, but we're Vasqueze's and when there's a problem we fix it. I didn't let you drag me into this just so we could give up at the first sign of danger." Her brother spoke, his voice full of hope and passion.
She smiled weakly, "You're right and you kinda fell into this mess by your own doing. I wouldn't say I dragged you in." Her brother chuckled on the other end and she pictured him rolling his eyes at her response. His warm ambition brought her some ease and it reminded her of when they were younger and he'd pick her up if she fell and give her little pep talks about 'brushing herself off' and 'getting back out there.' She wasn't used to his sudden burst of kindness, but she didn't mind it at all. For once he was just being her big brother.
"Whatever...I have to go. No real movement here other than the kids showing up, but I'll let you know if anything changes. Keep me updated, over and out." He said and then the channel went silent. Irene took another deep breath, turning the device in her hand off and then placing it back in her bag. As she exited the stall and moved toward the door, her hand hovered over the handle as she mentally prepared herself for what the rest of the afternoon had to bring.
"So she's doing it then?" Irene questioned as she reunited with her co-worker.
Robin scoffed, roughly scooping more ice cream into a cup, "Yeah, for a small fee of free ice cream for life." The girl next to her placed a gentle hand over hers and she looked up. Her face suddenly softened and her shoulders relaxed at the smile her friend wore. She sighed, letting Irene take over.
"What if we get fired or suddenly lose our jobs? I mean the girl's got moxie, but did she think of that?" Irene asked as she finished with the customer, turning to look at the teen that was resting against the counter. Robin shrugged and Irene didn't persist, mainly because not only was she internally stressing over the entire mission but because Robin was externally stressing out. She didn't want to worry herself nor her friend anymore for the time being.
Evening had crept over Hawkins with its soft blanket of darkness and the Vasquez siblings had notified their mother that they would be home late; both of their excuses being they had to help close conveniently on the same day. To their luck their excuses didn't even matter, their mom was stuck at the station filing paperwork for the Driscoll case that she witnessed the day prior.
The two siblings then signaled each other, making sure that they would contact the second things went haywire. Little did they know that the night had other plans.
Robin help up the walkie in her hand and asked, "Erica, do you copy?" Irene crouched beside Dustin, nervously fiddling with the rings on her hand. They all waited for the young girl's response.
"Mm-hmm. I copy. You nerds in position or what?" Erica asked and it sounded like she was readying herself for whatever she was about to embark on. She could and couldn't believe what she was about to do but considering what she was getting in return, she continued. She just hoped the group would hold up their side of the bargain.
"Yeah, we're in position. It's all quiet here, so you've got the green light." Robin responded as they continued to scout the drop off area that contained the boxes. They all knew how insane the plan and idea itself was, but the anticipation and adrenaline rush they felt doing it made the mission worthwhile. Irene was still sick to her stomach about the entire thing, her intuition was on overdrive. Something just didn't feel right.
"Green light, roger that. Commence Operation: Child Endangerment." She spoke to the four and Irene rolled her eyes. She admired Erica's wit, but it was not needed in times like these.
"Can we maybe not call it that?" Robin asked and Steve nodded beside her. Erica was never going to let them live this down and they could all feel it.
The young girls' voice echoed in their ears, "See you on the other side...Nerds."
Irene reached for her backpack and shuffled through it, her hands slowly pulling out a box of Skittles. Dustin and Steve stared at her in disbelief as she opened it, trying not to make any noise.
She felt eyes on her and looked up, moving the candy out toward them, "Did you guys...want some?" She whispered, placing some in her mouth to ease her nerves.
Steve shook his head and was about to ask something but Dustin beat him to the punch, "How and why do you have so many snacks in your bag? You are quite literally the Mary Poppins of treats, you do know that, right?" He asked and still held his hand out toward her. She shook the box and the rainbow colored candy fell into his palm.
"You can never have too many snacks, " She reasoned. "And I only eat sweets when I'm stressed, which with you guys has been more often than not. I'm not supposed to because sugar just makes me even more nervous, but...I just can't help it and it's not like I eat them a lot..." She admitted and the boys shared a knowing glance before Dustin gently plucked the box out of her hand. She reached for it and when he handed it to Steve who raised his brows at her, like a parent would at their child, she playfully slumped in defeat.
Steve laughed quietly, "We're just messing with you, Rena." And she shook her head, the remnants of a smile ghosted her lips, "You know, for someone who has the biggest sweet tooth, you always seem to let us eat the bulk of your snacks." He said and she nodded her head in agreement; they were always pestering her about the treats in her hand. She never minded though and always gave in. He held out the box for her to take and her face twisted in disgust, that unsettling feeling rising in the pit of her stomach.
"Have at it, I'm too nervous and don't feel like barfing up Skittles in front of you guys." She told them and Dustin grabbed the box, taking most of the candy for himself and handing Irene his binoculars.
Erica's voice soon filled the silence, "Alright, nerds. I'm there."
Robin perked up at sound and asked eagerly, "Do you–Do you see anything?" The other three inched closer to listen to what the young girl had to say.
"Yeah, I see those boring boxes you're so excited about." She deadpanned and Irene chuckled, still surprised at how lively Erica could be knowing what was at stake. Robin questioned if there were any guards and the girl in the vent eased their bubbling anxiety by confirming there were none.
"Booby traps?"
"If I could see them, they'd be pretty shitty traps. Wouldn't they?" Erica snapped and Irene held her breath, her left hand mindlessly tugged at her ear as they waited, her other still held tightly onto Dustin's binoculars.
"Thank you for that." The four of them could hear Erica kicking down the vent and then her feet firmly being planted on the ground.
"I'm in." She said sternly and Steve let out an exaggerated breath beside Robin, a weight was lifted off all of their shoulders. Suddenly the metal doors in the drop off area opened and all of their jaws dropped. They couldn't believe that they were actually going to figure out the mess they were trying to untangle for the past three days. It all felt like a dream.
Something stirred in the depths of Irene as the four of them met Erica at the door. And then it hit her; she wasn't going to make it to The Hideout that night, however that would be something she had to reconcile with Eddie later. There was a world that needed saving and she was standing at the frontlines of a war she knew nothing about.
Whatever Mateo thought he believed to be true about the kids his sister hung around was complete bullshit. He figured that much out when he saw them all sneak into the men's locker room and never walk back out once the pool had closed. He didn't panic though, especially because of the insight his sister gave him about them in her vision — they were there for a reason, he just didn't know what. What spooked him more than the teens was the slithering silent presence of Billy because he never agreed to close with him. Mateo watched as his shadow trudged off toward the locker rooms while he changed out the filter and added more shock to the pool.
He was actually fulfilling his duties as a closer, perhaps Billy had just stayed to keep him company. He highly doubted that though as he thought of all the times the blond made comments about how all his race was good for was working and making babies. It was always something with him; Mateo was starting to grow tired of the taunting, they weren't children after all.
A loud thud coming from inside the locker rooms brought him out of his thoughts and he dropped the net in his hands and raced toward the building. He reached to swing the door open and was confused to see it had been locked; Billy was still inside and so were the kids. He dug inside his pockets for the keys that one of the other lifeguards gave him and his hands nervously searched for the right one. Once he found it he unlatched the heavy door and ran toward the sound of another bang. His feet took him to the workout room where the five teens were standing and looking toward an enraged Billy locked inside the sauna.
"What the hell?"
Across town in Starcourt, Steve used the pocket knife Dustin handed him to open up one of the mysterious brown boxes. Irene held her breath as he opened the flaps and inside revealed what seemed to be another box but more industrial looking. It was something out of a spy movie. All five of them remained silent while Steve reached in and turned the latch, a faint hissing sound came from it as smoke rose out of the box and into the atmosphere. He removed the top and they all brought their heads forward to peak in; inside were four circles that seemed to be containers with handles.
Steve was the first to fill the silence, "That's definitely not Chinese food."
Irene finally exhaled, rubbing her face as she took a step back and began pacing the elevator. "You guys, I've got a bad feeling about this," She said wearily.
Robin placed a comforting hand on her friends' shoulder, "Hey calm down C-3PO, let's see what's inside first." She said and turned back to Steve who was reaching in to pull on one of the handles.
"Uh, maybe you guys should, you know, stand back." He urged and the three girls followed his orders while Dustin stood glued to his side.
"No." The boy said sternly.
"Just...Just step back, okay?" Steve asked as his hand pushed against Dustin's chest to turn him away. Irene reached to tug at the boys forearm but he moved it out of her arms reach.
"No." Dustin said again, resisting Steve's words. Irene pinched the bridge of her nose as she asked herself, is he seriously doing this right now? She knew the two cared about each other but the more time they wasted bickering, the longer it would be before they stepped out of the hellish elevator. She just wanted to get the evidence and leave.
"Step back. Seriously."
"No! No!" Dustin yelled which yanked Irene back to the present moment, "If you die. I die." He argued and the two held each others' gaze for a moment before Steve finally gave in.
"Okay." He said, curling his fingers around one of the handles and turning it to the left. It clicked and made another hissing noise as more smoke erupted from the box once the tube was lifted.
Steve held up a clear cylinder filled with a green substance that none of them had seen before — at least not in real life. It might've been on a Scooby-Doo episode or even in some Sci-Fi movie, but it clearly wasn't something you'd see going about your everyday routine. Irene felt light-headed as her co-workers voiced their concerns in short sentences because, quite frankly, none of them knew what to say. She swallowed down thickly as the elevator suddenly shook.
Irene's voice shook with fear as they all looked at each other, "Either Skittles started putting extra shit in their candy and I'm tripping out or the room just moved."
"Booby traps." Erica whispered ominously as the elevator continued to rumble and creak.
"You know what? Let's just grab that and go." Robin ordered, snatching the tube from Steve's grasp and placing it inside her backpack.
Dustin moved toward the elevators controls and pushed down on the button that clearly signified it would open the doors, "Which one do I press, Erica?" He asked frantically once he noticed the current button he was pushing wasn't doing anything.
"Just press the damn button, nerd." The young girl retorted and Irene felt herself break into a sweat, her heart raced as she gripped the sides of her shorts.
"Which one?! I'm pressing the button, okay?!"
"Press "open door!"" She said exasperatedly and Dustin quickly matched her emotions as he looked back at her.
"I'm pressing "open door!"" He yelled back and Steve interjected — the two of them began talking over each other as he insisted there's probably just another button that had to be pressed. And then Robin jumped in, telling the two to move so Erica could take over and get the five of them out of there.
Irene took a step back, her breaths matching her rapid heartbeat as she surveyed the situation. Her head felt even lighter than before as her legs wobbled, trying to keep her body upright. A large door came sliding down, trapping them inside the elevator. They all jerked downward and screams erupted from inside. She felt the warm crimson liquid stream down her nose and onto her lips, the taste of metal seeped into mouth as she looked helplessly at Steve. He watched her eyes roll back before her knees buckled and she dropped to the floor.
"Max! Let me out of here!" Billy yelled as his hands banged against the metal door. Mateo pushed past the group of teens toward him. As much as he didn't like the guy, he didn't want him to burn to death. He was yanked back by one of the boys.
"What are you kids doing?!" He asked, looking at each of them with both fear and concern. None of them had said anything to him as they watched Billy sweat and burn inside the heated room and he finally had enough, "You need to let him out!"
"You're Mateo, right?! Rena's brother?!" The boy asked frantically, his hair bobbing to the side as he shook his head. His grip was firm, but he wasn't holding onto Mateo in anger or frustration — it was terror that seemed to motivate all of them. Mateo couldn't find the words to respond so he nodded and the group all seemed to collectively heave a breath of relief; all but El.
"Why are you here?" She seethed and Mateo's heart dropped. How was he supposed to tell them? The thought popped into his mind and quickly shook it away as he stared at her.
"First you tell me why you're here and why Billy is in there!" He said in pure confusion and exasperation as he pointed behind him. What was his sister getting him into? Another clang sounded from the sauna room.
"Mateo, let me out!" Billy yelled and he turned but was tugged back again.
"If you trust your sister then you can trust us! Right now we don't have time to explain everything!" Another one of the boys spoke quickly, his eyes moving back and forth from Mateo to Billy. They genuinely seemed terrified and not like they were faking it for some malicious prank and it made the situation far more confusing for the oldest Vasquez. He couldn't rule out whatever they were about to tell him just yet because, he reminded himself, he had a sister with abilities not of the norm. And it seemed like these teens, despite only knowing Irene for a month or two, had formed a strong enough bond for them to know what she would've done. He didn't know what to think or do however — his head was spinning as Billy banged against the metal again.
"You kids...You think this is funny?" He breathed heavily, sweat pouring from him as he stared back at the group. "You think this is some kind of sick prank, huh?" He asked and spat against the glass. Mateo grimaced, looking to his side at the nearest teen who had weary eyes. "You little shits thinks this is funny?! And now, you've got the goddamn spic on your side too!" His face was red and his pupils had dilated which made his eyes look dark and menacing. The group all stared over at Mateo who clenched his jaw but stood glued to his spot beside Will.
"What is this? Open the door. Open the door!" Another bang shook Mateo as fear began to sink in — Billy wasn't in his right mind. Sure, he had issues with his anger and was mean when it was uncalled for, but the rage that he exhibited now was animalistic. "Open the door!" Another bang echoed inside the room. "Open the goddamn door!" Billy's breath fogged up the glass, his face was pushed up against it, as he his fists banged against the metal again.
He disappeared from the window as a pained cry came from him. Will ran up to the thermostat and turned back to the group, "We're at 220." He informed them and Mateo gulped, taking a hesitant step forward. He heard the echoes of Billy's cries against the small walls.
"It's not my fault. It's not my fault. It's not my fault, Max. I promise you it's not my fault." He whimpered and the red-head walked cautiously toward the door, looking through the glass down at her step-brother.
"What's not your fault, Billy?" She asked with shaky breaths.
"I've done things, Max. Really...bad things. I didn't mean to," He cried and the group all stepped froward, Mateo following beside them. What did he mean by that? He thought as he caught a glimpse of the man sitting on the floor, clouds of smoke surrounding him. "He made me do it."
"Who made you do it?" Max asked quietly.
"I don't know, it's like a shadow," Billy whispered and on the other side of the door El and Will shared a certain look. "Like a giant shadow. Please, Max." He cried.
"What did he make you do?"
"It's not my fault, okay?! Max, please! Please believe me, Max, it's not my fault! I tried to stop him okay?! I did!" Billy wailed and Mateo heard the soft cries that came from the red-head. He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder and she flinched.
He raised his hands slowly as she looked at him, "Take a deep breath." He urged and she nodded, following his suggestion before she turned back and placed her hand on the glass. Mateo took a step back and wrung his hands nervously.
"Billy, it's gonna be okay. It's gonna be okay. We want to help you." Max whimpered and Billy still pleaded softly for her to believe him. Mateo felt a churning sensation in the pit of his stomach and heard one of the boys whisper that someone was activated, while Max continued to reason with her step-brother. And suddenly one of them was screaming for her to move and before Mateo could even think he grabbed the girl to push her out of the way. The window had been shattered and Billy reached his body through as best as he could.
Mateo ushered the girl back toward her group of friends as Billy's voice boomed in his ears, "Let me out you son of a bitch! You fucking piece of shit, let me out! I'll fucking gut you!" He banged against the outside of the door and Mateo staggered backward, falling on his bottom.
Billy dropped the shard of tile in his hand before yanking out the metal rod they were using to keep the door shut. Mateo froze as the two of them locked eyes. Lucas moved Max to stand behind him before his hands reached for his slingshot; he placed a rock on the small pad of cloth and pulled the bungee back before it hit Billy square in the nose, causing him to fly back.
"Come on!" Lucas beckoned to Mateo who scrambled to his feet and rushed toward them. El grabbed him, moving his tall frame behind her and before he could protest the lights began to flicker and whir with electricity. They all looked up, trembling in fear. A loud roar came from the sauna room and Mateo's breath got caught in his throat. Billy began ramming into the door, trying to take it down.
"He can't get out can he?" Max asked to the group.
"No way. No way." Lucas said confidently but there was a slight unsureness to his voice.
"What in the actual hell is going on?" Mateo asked to no one in particular as Billy continued to roar and ram his body toward them. The door popped open and Billy tumbled to the ground, however hopping back onto his feet with ease. He stood in front of them, breathing heavily. His skin was all veiny, and his face was a deep red, but his blood looked dark and sinister like something out of a Stephen King novel.
El protectively placed herself in front of the group and Mateo was about to grab and pull her back but she lifted her hand and the rack of weights beside her lifted with it — without her having to touch it at all. She screamed and flung it toward Billy; his body flew backward against the brick wall. Mateo's mouth hung open and he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
El held another hand out, pushing the weight even further into the wall to trap Billy. Blood began to spill from her nose as she screamed. Billy seemed to be pushing the bar away from him and fighting back against her. In the blink of an eye he threw the bar toward her and she ducked swiftly however she didn't have enough time to run away. He grabbed a handful of her hair and yanked her back.
He stared over at the group for a moment and everything went still before his hand roughly grabbed wrapped itself around El's throat. He choked her and she coughed, pain blooming inside her chest. He then hoisted her body up, his hand still clutching tightly on her throat. His face was dark and evil.
Mateo finally got himself to move as he quickly reached for a weight that was on the floor. He lifted it up at swung with all his might at Billy's frame. The sound it made against his body echoed inside his ears and made him cringe internally, but nonetheless he had knocked him down.
"Leave the girl alone, asshole!" He bellowed, as he dropped the weight and kneeled down throwing his fists at Billy's face. He got in a few good punches before the blond flipped them around and wrapped both his hands around the lifeguards neck. He was squeezing with everything he had and dark spots began to cloud Mateo's vision.
Mike was the next person to jump in as he reached for a metal bar on the ground, swinging it at Billy, "Go to hell, you piece of shit!" The boy yelled as he raised the weapon to hit Billy again but the latter caught it in his hand and threw it to the side. Mateo gasped on the floor, catching his breath before he moved to help up El. She looked at him with a flash of gratitude in her face before it hardened as she turned her eyes toward Billy towering over Mike.
He grunted as his body was lifted in the air, El's hands extended toward him with a look of determination etched in her features. She walked around to face him, blood rapidly running down her nose. Her face was red and she looked like she running on one last dying flame, tears streamed down her cheeks as she and Billy both screamed. She threw his body to the right and it tore through the brick wall.
She fell into Mike's arms and Mateo walked up to the other three, asking if they were alright, searching their faces for any cuts or bruises. They nodded, tear stains evident on their faces. Mateo ran his hand through his hair and looked out the huge hole, watching as Billy ran, trying to piece together what he just witnessed.
