Closing the Gap

At 12 years old, Sans seemed almost completely independent. He knew how to cook and clean and was trying to work his way through the bills. Papyrus could only guess that this was around the age that Sans started to work for himself. Sans had always been withdrawn, for as long as Papyrus could remember, but that switch didn't seem very subtle. It made Papyrus worry that something had happened to make Sans want to move out. "Brother, How Would You Like To Go To Grillby's?" Papyrus asked as he helped Sans through bills as the current adult. "grillby's sounds kinda good right now... but do we have the g for that? i mean- does sentry duty really pay that good?" Sans worried, making Papyrus frown. A child shouldn't be worrying about money. "I Get Paid Quite Well, Thank You... Of Course We Have The Money To Go To Grillby's, Sans... I Promise That We Do..." Sans eyelights watched Papyrus for a moment before he sighed and nodded. It was a habit Sans had gotten into ever since they last ran into Undyne. It was another thing that worried Papyrus, but maybe Grillby would know what to do.

Sans wanted to walk alone, but at least he let Papyrus hold his hand. He kinda already missed little Sans. He liked connecting with him. There were no secrets as soon as he'd gained little Sans trust. Now, he could feel the distance between himself and his brother... the one he'd always known when Sans was the big brother. As a side thought, he wondered if Sans missed him being a toddler. Papyrus got the door for his brother and followed Sans in as they were both greeted by everyone. Papyrus never thought he'd see the day he would be a regular like Sans- "i'd like a burg, please." Sans looked up at the startled bartender before he nodded and looked to Papyrus. "He's growing up fast..."
"Nyeh, Tell Me About It. I Was Hoping We Could All Talk While You Eat, If That's Ok With You, Brother?" Papyrus requested. Grillby nodded, and Sans shrugged. "kinda figured you did." The child admitted as he slipped off his stool to head to the back. Papyrus felt anxiety creep up on him. Did Sans mean that in a good way or a bad way? Regardless, he followed.

Grillby set the finished meal in front of Sans and sat opposite of him. "What is on your mind, Papyrus?" Papyrus looked between the skeleton and the fire monster as he started to explain his observations. "Well, There Has Been A Sudden... Distance. I Do Not Know If This Is Normal, And I Was Hoping That... That Nothing Happened Between You Two During This Time In Your Life, Sans." Sans blinked in realization before giving Papyrus an apologetic look. "i- i didn't realize... sorry, bro." Grillby hummed as he thought back. "Nothing... bad, persay. A human had fallen down, if I remember correctly. I often helped to search for then in order to keep them far from Sans, however, that time alone..." Papyrus nodded along, totally understanding now. "grillby wouldn't tell me why he was out, didn't wanna worry me, i guess. i still felt..." Sans paused as he tried to come up with the words. "left out. started to keep to myself. i'm sorry i started doing the same thing, bro..." Sans rubbed his skull and Papyrus smiled. "It Is Alright... Please... Just Talk To Me If You Need, Brother..." Sans nodded. He'd try, at least. "I'm sorry I made you feel left out, Sans, it wasn't my intention..." Sans accepted Grillby's apology.
