Ed's Torment #5 Part 10

Disclaimer: I do not own Fullmetal Alchemist or Gravity Falls. They belong to Hiromu Arakawa and Alex Hirsch respectively. I only own the OC characters.

-------

The weeks that Edward spent in the hospital passed by without any incident, much to Katelyn's relief. During that time, everyone had stayed close by the young alchemist's side, offering support however they could. Since Alphonse had finally arrived, the older Elric's only other living relative, the hospital asked non-family members to stay the night somewhere else. Micheal, Katelyn, and Rosalin reluctantly agreed to stay in a nearby hotel. Katelyn figured she would take it out of Stanley's revenue.

Every time that Katelyn visited the Elric brothers in the hospital, she would see significant improvement in Edward. The wounds on his body slowly healed into scars, to the point where he no longer needed bandages. He was back up to a healthy weight. He no longer flinched at everyone's touch, including the nurses. The image of the emaciated, broken boy that Katelyn had found seemed like a distant memory.

She remembered one particular afternoon where Katelyn was sitting next Edward on the bed, talking about the things they would do once they returned to the Mystery Shack. Ed even reminisced and shared with her the things he missed back in Amestris. She loved when he opened up to her about where he came from. It was during this that she realized she had a spare hair tie in her pocket. She pulled it out and held it up, so he could take a good look.

"You want to finally fix your hair?" she asked.

Edward stared between the offered hair tie and Katelyn's sincere blue gaze. With an eager smile on his face, the young prodigy nodded silently. Katelyn motioned for him to turn around. Once he was situated, she began delicately intertwining Ed's golden locks between her fingers. The alchemist himself felt comforted throughout the whole process. There was a gentleness that he felt from Katelyn's hands, one that he hadn't felt since his mother passed away. They were hands that he knew he would always be safe in.

Before long, Katelyn tied off Ed's hair, and he felt it with his flesh hand. It was hard to imagine that the same hands that had brutally slayed monsters could braid hair in such a fashion. Honestly, it was better than what he could do himself. The familiar weight of the braid against the back of his neck was something he had missed.

Everyone else had marveled at Katelyn's handiwork when they came back to the room. Alphonse and Rosalin were both praising the younger Johnston of her skills. Katelyn was just glad that Ed looked like his old self again.

It wasn't too long until Ed's release date arrived. Rosalin had driven the old station wagon while her and Alphonse travelled to the hospital. So, it was only natural that Ed rode with Rosalin and his brother in the station wagon. Katelyn followed on her motorcycle, and Micheal did the same with in his Cadillac.

They had left the hospital early in the morning to make the four hour drive back to Gravity Falls. Everyone at the Mystery Shack was informed of when their arrival would be. Everyone pulled up to the rundown building by late morning.

The twins were the first to rush out the door once Edward stepped out of the car. He was slammed into forcefully by two mops of brown hair, two sets of arms wrapping around him. It took him a moment to collect his bearings at the twins' synchronized sobbing. He pat them both on the head, assuring them that he was alright before they let go.

Wendy walked fast up to him before smothering him in her own hug, careful not to squeeze too hard. He returned the embrace. She pulled away, ruffling his hair. "Welcome back, squirt," she said. Ed felt his eyebrow twitch slightly at the nickname.

Soos captured him in a playful headlock, giving his hair a gentle noogie. Despite how intellectually challenged the current owner of the Mystery Shack was, Edward couldn't dismiss the fact of how fun he was to hang around with. Which, he supposed, is why the twins loved having him around. The shack just wasn't the same without Soos.

Stanley gave Ed a pat on the shoulder, gripping it in an almost fatherly manner. "Good to have you back, sport," he said. Ford gave him a nod, one that conveyed his relief to see the young prodigy safe and sound. Ed noticed that the old paranormal scientist held a bundle of cloth in his hands. Ed's eyes lit up at the realization that it was his black leather clothes with his signature red coat. Slowly, Ed took them from Ford, staring at them as if they weren't real. He then rushed into the shack to change out of the gray shoes, sweatpants, and hoodie that the hospital had given him.

Everyone gathered inside the shack to see the young prodigy back in his familiar outfit. It truly was a sight to behold. Katelyn chuckled at what seemed like outright giddiness that Ed seemed to emit as he emerged from the bathroom. Everyone smiled and cheered at the alchemist's transformation. Ed's return was something that everyone mutually agreed was something to be celebrated.

Amidst the joyful times that took place in the shack's breakfast nook, Ford took Katelyn aside from the main group. He motioned for her to follow. This couldn't mean anything good. Ford stopped at the foyer, waiting for Katelyn to join him before speaking.

"You remember telling me to scan for any interdimensional rifts that were open in the area?" he asked.

Katelyn nodded. She had called Ford during Ed's recovery, telling him that Ed's captor had possibly come through a portal that opened in Gravity Falls, like the ones that tend to pop up every now and then. Ford had promised her that he would use one of his devices to see if that portal was still open.

"I found it," Ford continued. "It's right below the old mining track between the two cliffs. The one that was formed by the alien spacecraft."

Katelyn crossed her arms. A portal being open for that long meant it was large, large enough for almost anything to come through. She contained a shudder at the memory of Weirdmageddon, of the giant rift that floated in the red sky above the town. "How do we close it?" she asked.

Ford adjusted his glasses. "For a rift this big, it'll take more than technology to close it. Your powers will be crucial for this."

Katelyn sighed. She knew it, of course. The powers that she still had no idea how to harness. She knew what their purpose was now but learning to use them was like trying to break a wild stallion. It was hard for her to control it.

"We can do it tonight," Ford said. "While everyone's asleep."

Katelyn looked back towards laughter and excitement that could be heard from the other room. Hopefully, by doing this, she would ensure Edward's safety. "Alright," she said with determination. "Let's do it.

She would let the festivities continue. Ed deserved that much anyway.

-------

In the dead of night, two figures snuck quietly from the Mystery Shack, the other residents still asleep inside. The only witness to their exploits were the night creatures that roamed the woods. Their footsteps crunched the on the leaves on the forest floor.

Katelyn could feel the heaviness weigh down on her as her and Ford made their way to the twin cliffs. She glanced up at the mining track, where Gideon's robot had fell from almost two years before. Now it was broken due to a mistake on her part. She huffed quietly to herself at how much trouble she had gotten into with the townsfolk because of that.

A beep from the device Ford was holding sounded. "We're getting close," he stated. They continued their way forward until they breached into the clearing right below the mining track. The feeling here was stronger. Katelyn knew they had found the portal.

What Katelyn saw before her was invisible to Ford. It was a singular black hole that seemed to hover an inch above the ground. The air around it seemed to vibrate. The edges rippled, as if reality was the surface of water.

Ford stepped forward to place a different device on the ground, one that had two antennae sticking up out of it. Ford explained that this would help stabilize the portal as she closed it. The portal itself would need her energy to begin the process. Ford stood up once he was done adjusting the device. He stepped back, motioning for Katelyn to move forward. "Ready when you are," he said.

Katelyn took a deep breath and released it. Slowly, she moved forward until she was right in front of the device Ford had set up. In a flash of yellow light, she reverted to her other form, the metallic parts of her body gleaming in the moonlight. Focusing on the power within her, her eyes lit up with a bright blue fire, engulfing her circular amber orbs. Building it up inside, she released her energy at the portal, a column of bright blue flames shooting right towards the black mass.

As soon as the fire hit the portal, energy exploded around them. The black portal shot out purple sparks as it distorted, like it was fighting to be closed. Eventually, though, it slowly began to shrink. The air around it swirled, like water being sucked down a drain.

At the exact moment that the circle of blackness shut completely, blue light exploded outward in a ring from the spot where it had closed. The light illuminated the clearing for a moment, clearly detailing the shadows around them. A strong wind blew back the trees, making them bend. The two occupants between the cliffs shielded their eyes from the burst of energy.

After everything died down, Katelyn lowered her arm, glancing at the spot where the portal was. She released a breath she didn't know she was holding. Her other form dissipated, leaving her normal once again.

"It's over."
