He was just staring at the view for the past ten minutes, as if he was thinking about something.
Finally, he spoke.
"Do you want to know how my dad died?" He asked.
"If you don't mind telling me." Ew, I sounded so... Ew.
"I didn't tell you the whole story yesterday." He said, pressing his palms to his face.
"Go on."
"I was a coward, Chad." He sighed.
"Can we start from the top?" I interrupted.
"I'll start from when he was running down the stairs with his gun pressed to my mom's head. I took my bat and started chasing after him, ignoring my mom's cries for me to run away through the window in my room. Right then, I heard the doorbell ring. That bastard pulled out another gun and shoved it at my head with his left hand. He threatened to kill my mom first and then me if I don't do as he says. He ordered me to drop the bat and open the door. Guess who it was?"
I remained silent. I have never heard so much venom in his voice before.
"Dad." He said and the tears started spelling out.
I gently rubbed his hand, in order for him to continue.
"My dad was obviously shocked. But he ducked, trying to kick him and make him lose his balance. As if one monster wasn't enough, he called out for his team mates and soon we were surrounded by five tall buff guys. They managed to pin us down to chairs in the kitchen.
They tied my parents up and kept asking me this, "Why did you steal them?" I was confused. Steal what? When I didn't reply the said they would shoot my dad in front of me. I racked my brain to remember what I stole. It wasn't easy with their countdown of ten seconds. I should have at least lied and told them that I stole a thousand dollars or something.
They shot my dad after their stupid ten second countdown." He squeezed his eyes shut.
I wasn't sure if I heard the last part right since he was constantly trying to stop his tears.
He continued after releasing the breath he was holding, "I didn't know what to do. My mom told me to run. One of those bulk heads got a call at that time. All I could hear was "I'm sorry, boss. The kid wouldn't tell me anything." He then abruptly ended the call and sprayed this gas I told you about and ran away with my mom." He finished giving in to the tears again.
"C'mon, buddy." I said, wrapping my arms around him. I rubbed his back in a reassuring way, gently patting it so he'd stop crying.
"Breathe." I said, gently hitting his back.
And he did. For what seemed like ten seconds, he just closed his eyes and breathed. He wasn't letting go of the hug so I pulled him away.
"You fine, bro?" I asked, giving him a warm smile.
Billy: You finally called him your brother.
Shut up. It's just a form of speech.
He didn't return it. His frown still stayed and that bothered me.
"This is useless." He sighed before doing a flip and jumping off the edge.
Authors note: THE END.
Naaah, I'm not that evil, don't worry. Sorry, carry on:
I was shocked by his sudden movement and my reflexes are the best when I'm under shock. I swooped down and grabbed his leg. If I let go, he would fall and die.
Billy: No pressure. It's just that his life is in your hands.
"What are you doing? Let go!" He yelled, frustrated.
"Give me one good reason to." I said, sounding sappy.
So I quickly added, "I can think of more painful ways to kill you. Like drowning you in a pool of blue water." I tried to make him laugh at that prank.
I pulled him up carefully, trying not to fall myself.
After we both were standing, I wiped off the tears still on his cheeks. "Killing yourself would not solve anything."
"My dad died. At least I could meet him in heaven. There's no use of me still living here without my dad."
"Your mom?"
"She's going to die anyway."
"Me?" I asked frankly.
What happened to him??
I grabbed his shoulders and started shaking him hard for a couple of times.
"Brad. Do you have any idea what you're saying?" I yelled, hoping that would shake some sense into him.
He just looked down, as if praying for the ground to split up and swallow him.
Not happening while I'm around.
"Listen to me. We're going to save your mom and you're going to live on. You've got to live THIS life, Brad. Screw after life. I get that you're depressed because your dad was killed in front of you, but if you die without even trying to save your mom... Well, that would be pathetic. Be brave, man. Don't give those bastards what they want, okay?" I patted his shoulder. He tried for a smile.
"So, what's the plan?" I asked as we sat down on the edge. One push and we'd fall to our deaths but I sat there for the view.
"Kill them and save my mom." He said.
"That's the spirit. How do you plan on doing that?" I beamed.
"I guess we'll know when we meet Ryder."
"I'll give him a call." I said pulling out my phone. Using the last 10% of the battery, I dialled his number.
"Rakish Ryder speaking. How many bags of awesomeness would like?" I heard him say.
He must have seen the caller ID.
"I think I'm going to explode if I take any more bags of awesomeness." I chuckled before continuing, "Where exactly do we meet up? You said something about Starbucks in the video..."
"Where exactly are you?" He asked.
"We're at the California border from Las Vegas." I said.
"I'll be there in two hours." He said before abruptly hanging up the phone.
"Two hours to kill, then." I mumbled, laying on my back with my hands under my head.
Brad copied me, staring at the clouds, probably thinking about his dad.
