The Timeless Ship

This is the first story I wrote. English isn't my first language so if  you find any mistakes please tell me.

They were gazing at the dipping sun, that bled a multitude of colors into the calm sea. David embraced her lovingly, her head rested against his chest as he laid his chin atop of her head.

"I'm glad you pushed me into agreeing to go into this month long trip over seas, Mrs Jones."

The young woman giggled as she replied " I'm not a Jones, not yet."

The sun gleamed on her ring as she turned around, gently holding her arms around his shoulder. He looked down at her with his loving hazel eyes as the breeze ruffled her curly auburn hair.

"Soon," he promised " the wedding is after the trip,Mia."

Amelia tightened her hold as he bend down, connecting his forehead with hers. He was so close she could count the individual dark lashes, spot the golden freckles that was dusted on his face. She closed her grey eyes as he brushed his lips against hers. Devotion filled every fiber of her being.

A wolf whistle broke their kiss. Looking over the couple found the person responsible for the sound, a young dark skinned sailor was grinning teasingly at them as he carried a crate across the deck.

"Don't let me interrupt."

She buried her face in David's shoulder embarrassingly when the sailor mischievously winked as he left. David laughed when she blushed. It's going to be a interesting trip he thought fondly, as he looked at his fiancé in his arms.

It was chaos.

Pure and utter chaos. Men were screaming, ordering each other around as the ship dangerously titled to a side. Dark clouds were billowing the night sky, pelting them with water droplets. The ocean furiously pushed the ship, massive waves crashing against each other as far as the eye could see.

" Amelia?" shouted a man over the panicking crew, " Mia!"

David desperately looked around for his betrothed. In the distance lightning roared bringing with it a much appreciated flash of light. Her red hair was a beacon in the night, quickly coming to her side. David clutched her wrist tightly, his concern was visible as he scanned her soaked form for any injury. He pushed her in-front of him towards the stairs.

"Come on, quickly" he urged her.

With one last glance towards the enraged sea, Mia stepped down the stairs with David closely behind her. She pitched forward, losing her balance but David quickly grasped her waist supporting her body weight. He corrected her stance yet his arm remained around her waist.

"You ok?" He questioned worryingly.

When she nodded they continued in silence until they reached a small room. He gently pushed her on the only bed in there.

"What's gonna happen now?"

She looked up at him with her tear stricken face. He took a moment to soothing wipe the tears with his thumb before he replied,

"...I don't know" he looked into her grey eyes that was filled with panic, framed by her wet auburn hair. He pulled the blanket from the bed and wrapped it around her shivering form.

"What I know is that your going to stay right here, while I'll go help the crew on the deck."

He continued above her desperate denials by firmly saying "You can't go, you'll only slow down the crew because you know nothing about sailing...and I'll admit I don't want you up there"

He embraced the women and kissed the top of her head as he whispered "I don't want you getting hurt, Mia."

Amelia grabbed his face with her pale hands, watching as he gazed at her intently, as if seeing her for the last time, tattooing her features on his heart.

"You can't...I wouldn't..don't leave me!" She mumbled miserably. David closed his eyes in regret but he was determined in helping the crew.

He kissed her passionately converting all his feelings and unspoken words into her. Mia pulled him closer until there soaked bodies pressed against each other. Their love for the other tangled around them.

In that moment the world faded away, everything but the sensation of each other disappeared.

Until lightning flashed, the sound rumbling and crashing. The ship lurched sideways and the men's screams echoed in the silent room.

David stepped back, loosening Mia's hold on him. He held her hand guiding it to his face, kissing her fingertips.

"This isn't a goodbye, I'll come back to you, love, I always do" he promised. Smiling affectionately at her, he rushed to join the chaos above. Leaving her behind, where she cried herself to sleep.

. o0o . .o0o. .o0o.

Seagull's squawking woke her from her restless slumber. Mia opened her eyes, turning in her bed to greet David, but found the bed vacant. Sitting up, the young woman looked around the room with confusion.

"David?"

Then the memories came back. Gasping as she remembered last night she shot out of bed, running out of the room and up the stairs. Not noticing the dry bed behind her or the dry floor. She slammed the door open to see an empty deck, devoid of humans.

She raised her hand, shading her eyes from the glaring sun. Sea gulls flew in the clear blue sky. The calm sea reflected the afternoon sun, making it shimmer a soft golden color. There was no hint of yesterday's storm.

"David?" She called desperately.

Amelia raced across the deck, slamming every door open searching for David.

"David! Love, if this is a prank it's not funny."

She searched the whole ship, yet there was no one there. Minutes passes as she researched one, two...three times but the result remained the same.

Maybe they went to an island and forgot to awake her, she thought. Or maybe men came to rescue them and David was too tired to tell them about her. Different scenarios and maybes crossed her mind, each one worse then the last.

Mia noted everything she could about the trip. At the beginning David was reluctant but she persuaded him into it. It being a month long trip From Florida to the Bahamas. They were going to have the time of their life. Today was supposed to be the eleventh day. After the trip they're have their highly anticipated wedding. Then they'll move into an average-sized apartment.

David will come, it may take a day or two. But he'll come, he always does.

She sat at the front of the ship, never wondering how the ship's sailing without a captain. Amelia watched as the sun sank and the moon raised. She watched as the moon slept and the sun woke, convinced that David will return, he always does.

. o0o . .o0o. .o0o.

Four days passed yet he didn't return. She went through the days without thought. She woke, rinsed, ate, slept, repeating the process automatically. The time left was spent between gazing at the sun and searching the ship for clues, entertainment or supplies. Like right now, where Mia is searching for food in the empty kitchen.

If she calculated correctly, the food supply, which mostly consists of fruits, breads, fishes and eggs, will last for about a month. Which is more than enough cause she wouldn't stay more than a week maximum.

She took a fresh red apple from the fruit basket and left the kitchen silently. Rubbing it with her shirt, she took a bite from the apple, the sweet flavor filling her up with faith.

She sat looking at the bright sun. The gentle sway of the ship made her drowsy. Comforted by the thought of he will come, that's what she would've done. She laid down on the deck, closing her eyes. she dozed off, the sound of the moving ship washing over her like a soft blanket in a cold lonely night.

. o0o . .o0o. .o0o.

Hours bleed into days, days bleed into weeks until fifteen days passed. Two weeks passed yet David didn't come, why didn't he come rescue her from this abandoned ship. Half a month is more than enough time to find her. If it was him here...

She stopped herself from continuing the thought. She couldn't ever dream of him being deserted in this lonely ship instead of her. She resumed dusting the clear floor, trying to not think on her unfortunate situation.

David's green shirt hung on her shoulder, it was a size too big, the ends reached her mid thigh, but it was his. Her auburn hair was tied in a messy bun, strands falling free from all the work she did.

After awhile of it failing, she placed the bloom against the wall. Humming, Mia walked towards the captain's room, her bare feet making a soft dull sound every step of the way as they hit the cold floor. She started to despise the silence, it emphasizes the point that she's alone.

Entering the room, she headed to the back where bookshelves were located, covering part of a wall. Sunlight streamed from the window, casting the room in warm colors. Her fingers grazed the book spines as she thought of what to pick. The shelves were filled with a variety of books, mostly classics. Her hands stopped at Pride and Prejudice. Gently taking it out, she silently apologized to the absent captain as she went outside.

A few clouds floated in the blue sky, reflecting on the vast open sea. Sitting down on the floor, she crossed her legs, getting comfortable as she reread the novel. Letting her mind wonder, she remembered the first time they met in university, the...

October wind Rustled the aflame leaves, making a few gently fall down, dancing in the breeze that followed. One copper colored leave sank into the young woman's hair, quickly getting tangled with her messy auburn hair, going unnoticed by the said women.

She had her back against the rough tree, it's branches twisted over her, like a giant umbrella, shading her from the view of many. She was reading a novel, waiting for her friend to finish her work, so they may go home together.

"Pride and Prejudice."

She jumped, startled by an unfamiliar voice. Looking up Amelia found a young man with blond hair, staring down at her with hazel eyes. When she continued staring at him with confusion he nodded his head toward the book clutched between her hand.

She stared at the front cover, where the title was written. Before replying " oh, yeah...the title."

" do you like classic books?"

"Umm no, I mean..I guess...I'm ok with it, it's...it's for an assignment" she mumbled as his smile grew.

"Is this seat taken?"

She looked at the empty benches near the university entrance then at the grass she's sitting on, piled with the autumn leaves then at the young man about her age with his gentle smile. Then said

"Sure,...ok, I mean, uhh no" when he raised his eyebrows, she hurriedly said " I mean you can sit...if you want, that is"

Blushing, she shoved her things to the side, making room for him when he nodded. Sitting down next to her, he laid his textbook and some notebooks on the ground besides him.

"David Jones" he said confidently, " third year."

She stared at him as he expectedly looked back at her before realizing it's her turn.

"Oh, right...Amelia...Amelia Miller."

"Well Amelia," he said teasingly " which year are you?"

"I'm...this is my first year" she answered shyly, looking down at her closed book.

"Figures"

When she looked back at him, he clarified " it's hard to miss a hair like this" stretching his hand, David gently tugged a strand of her hair," what color do you call it?"

Blushing harder, Amelia said softly " it's, reddish-brown...auburn."

Amelia was clearly uncomfortable, so David tried to lighten the mood. Humming he thoughtfully inspected the strand before jokingly saying as he dropped it

"I don't know, it looks like a tomato shade to me."

She quickly looked at his golden blond hair before saying without thinking " well, yours look like a potato shade to me"

David joyfully laughed while saying " I guess I deserved it, huh"

He continued this childish joke as Amelia joined in giggling, " at least everyone loves potatoes... French fries, chips it's all thanks to me."

Amelia playfully quipped back, " maybe, that's why your so common...at least I'm special this way."

The time passed quickly with them talking and joking about nothing in particular and when Amelia spotted her friend Mary exit the university she took her time taking her stuff and standing.

"There's my ride" she said sadly as Mary approached her, standing a fair distance away, curiously watching them.

"I'll see you soon?" He asked hopefully.

When Amelia started walking away without replying, David's shoulder slumped, until she looked back at him and grinned, saying with all the confidence she could muster

"Call me Lia, that's what my friends call me."

"Oh no," he replied dramatically " you're a tomato, you're special so you need a special nickname from me...how about Mia."

"Very original," yet she still nodded. Waving in goodbye as she rushed to her friend's side, who then untangled the leave from her hair much to the embarrassment of Amelia. David laughed, the sound following her...

... Into reality. Blinking, she looked down at the page she was on, the words blurred together and the page had a few water droplets on. She glanced at the sky, checking to see if it started raining. But the few white clouds there were, innocently passing by.

Slowly reaching for her cheek, she flinched as her fingers brushed her wet face. Tears were streaming down her face, dripping into the book. Setting the book aside, she quickly wiped the tears away. Yet as soon as she wiped them new tears poured out of her eyes, quickly replacing the lost ones.

" I...I miss you, David...so, so much." She sobbed, letting all her contained emotions flowing free. "I...I N-need you,I...I can't, not without you...not you..Y-you promised."

She wailed at the sky. She wished the wind would howl over her screams, she begged the clouds to spill their contents, so it could hide her tears.

So she wouldn't be the only one crying aguishly in this lonely sea.

. o0o . .o0o. .o0o.

Another week passed without any sign of David coming back. That made it the twenty seventh day since that dreaded accident. They would've been back by now, in a few days they were supposed to have their wedding, finally being the wife of David Jones. They would've lived a long happy life together, with their own big family.

She would've never had this feeling in her heart. An emptiness that engulfed her whole being, it stretches as wide as the vast sea. Loneliness gripped her heart with it's mighty claws, tearing her heart every time a day passes with no one to talk to, no want to joke with or comfort you. Where...where's David when you need him.

Mia confusedly frowned at the food supply, that was no where near to ending. In fact, if she was remembering right, the amount remained about the same as it did the last time she checked, which was twenty-seven days ago. It couldn't be right, but as she checked again the results remained the same. No, it's impossible. How can the food not reduce in a month, that's...that's unnatural.

But it's not on her top list of priorities, the first of which is getting out of this ship, followed closely by her mental well-being. She took half a red apple from the fruit basket. Despite it's brown edges it was still as sweet as she remembered.

The sweet taste lingered in her mouth as she got outside, the wind lovingly caressed her. Whispering it's greeting with his voice, declaring his joy and love in the breathe against her neck. Turning around excitedly she cried out,

"David!"

But he was not there. Only his unique scent of coconut and leather mingling with the salty air remained, accompanied her in this forsaken ship.

. o0o . .o0o. .o0o.

Amelia lost track of time. Days and weeks passed until she couldn't tell the difference. Seasons may have passed yet she wouldn't know, stuck here in the middle of the unchanging sea.

She gazed silently at the bright stars. Somewhere out there, David could be watching the same stars, thinking about her. She took comfort in that thought, that no matter where they are, they would always remain in each other's heart

She hoped her family will always remember her as their precious child. She always pushed them to the back of her mind, the thought of their reaction to her disappearance, too painful to bear. She misses them like a missing limb. They were the ones that shaped her into the lady she is today. They were the ones who always took care of her when she was too sick to move. They were the ones that stood by her, through thick and thin. They were the ones who sang lullabies till she slept and bandaged her knee when she fell.

They were the ones who joyfully accepted the marriage, always teasing her about her future grandkids.

Mia turned her head, her copper hair fluttered in the soft breeze that came. Stars danced in her grey eyes as she caught sight of David lounging beside her.

He leaned forward, cupping her face with his gentle hands. Grinning, he whispered, "Miss me?"

"You came back!" She delightfully exclaimed.

"Course I will, I promised, didn't I?"

She reached out her arms, seeking his presence. But she fell forward as she hugged thin air. Landing on her hands she desperately turned around, tears already clouding her eyes.

She hugged her knees, rocking back and forth, mumbling no like a broken record.

The sea took her sense of time, took her blood and heart and now...now her sanity is sinking with it.

. o0o . .o0o. .o0o.

She had enough. Her dull grey eyes reflected against the sharp kitchen knife held in her hands. She stood dispassionately in the redecorated room where she last saw him.

Moonlight shone from the high window, bathing the room in an eerie light. On the night stand was a thin apple, it fitted in, with its brown rotten skin.

She internally apologized to her family and friends but she was not regretting this decision. She couldn't stand not talking with anyone but the hallucinations that hunted her days.

His hands curled around her trembling ones. Leaning into her, he whispered soothing words and sweet promises against her ear as he turned the knife towards her.

Soon, she thought, soon I'll join you on the other side. I wouldn't be alone, I'd be with you, together for eternity. They'll understand, they always stood behind her.

Mia closed her eyes, her heart was beating frantically against her chest, fighting its destiny. He kissed the tears that silently leaked from her eyes. tightening her hold on the knife, she plunging it in her chest.

Welcoming the blackness that enveloped her dying soul.

. o0o . .o0o. .o0o.

Staring blankly at the ceiling, Amelia laid on a bed, that she woke up from. She touched the spot she was sure the knife went into, yet her skin was unblemished and clear, no life-threatening injury in sight.

She was so sure that she died, she desired it so badly, it was her only chance of escape from this unbearable reality. And now, she scowled, now the sea took it. Maybe she's in hell, for her past unknown deeds, stuck here for eternity, longing to be free from this vacant prison floating in this vast open sea. When will the sea grant her peace.

Anger coursed threw her veins, making her see red. Leaping from the bed, she stormed out of the room. How dare it. How dare fate and time mess with her, tormenting her for ages to come. Taking everything that defines her and tearing it apart, one by one.

She snatched a flower vase, sitting on a table in the hall way. She roughly clutched it in her hands, until her knuckles whitened. Before throwing it as hard as she could against the wall.

She watched as it shattered into a million pieces, showering the hall with tiny shards. She looked for anything else to throw to alleviate her anger. Finding nothing she kicked the table multiple times, taking the table leg and snapping it in half between her hands. She stepped into the next room, walking all over the broken glass, not minding as the glass pierced her skin. Rather she felt a sick sort of delight with each sharp sting it produced, at least they couldn't take away her feelings. She screamed her frustration with every thing she wrecked, leaving behind her piles of broken woods and shards.

. o0o . .o0o. .o0o.

She danced below the blinking stars, her bare feet rhythmically tapping against the wooden floor, as she jumped and twirling on the empty ship. Her auburn hair fluttered around her in the gentle breeze. She smiled joyfully at the dark sky.

Her façade slipped away for a moment, revealing a lack of emotion underneath, before the smile returned to her cheerful face.

Who was she fooling? She thought humorlessly, as she continued her graceful dance. There was no one to see her fall with their judging eyes. No one to reprimand and mock her, to belittle her for her past actions. No one to understand her pain and desperation that fueled her entire being. It was just her and the deep sea.

She looked more puppet than human with her lifeless eyes and her carefully constructed mask. Underneath all the layers of her lies lay a broken soul and a fragile heart. She picked all the pieces of her heart and stitched it right back. But there was no mending a broken soul, not with all the cracks and missing parts.

She was caught in her own web of lies with no escape in sight, until she couldn't tell the difference between truth and lies. So she threw them all out, becoming an unfeeling blank puppet, dancing to the tune of time.

The crescent moon shone down on her.

She closed her eyes, remembering the howling wind, the glint of a knife, blood pooling beneath her motionless body, and the warmest hazel eyes. Before she pushed them away, to the back of her mind.

. o0o . .o0o. .o0o.

Humming a tune, she laid on the deck bathing in the sunlight. Loud chatter reached her ears. After awhile she stood up wanting to see what her imagination conjured now.

Following the sound to the other side of the ship. She saw a group of six men entering the ship from another one.

She walked up to them with a smile, giggling as one jumped from shock. She noted their baffled expressions as she happily greeted them. They apologized, saying they didn't expect to find anyone in this abandoned ship. How polite of them, she thought.

"Will you tell me when you'll leave?" She asked.

"Leave?" A man said as the others laughed, "we just found a missing ship we've been searching for, for ages."

The more she talked to them the more real they seemed. She turned, confused but not willing to hope, only to bump into someone. Hazel clashed with hopeful grey eyes as she looked up and saw him, with his blond hair and gentle smile.

"David!" She joyfully exclaimed.

Her heart leaped in her chest, singing a familiar and dearly missed tune. She quickly embraced him. He was firm and there. He was real. Finally he came back to her. She breathed him in, held in his arms, she felt grounded and safe, until he stepped back and gently pushed her away.

He looked at her with foreign eyes. Her heart sank with the realization that her David didn't remember her. After all she's been through she didn't forget. She never forgot him.

understanding sparked in his eyes as he took her in.

"Amelia?" His voice was softer and younger.

She slowly nodded, looking at him harder, she noticed that his hair is darker and his eyes are more brown than hazel.

He smiled, uncertainly extending his hand to her as he said,

"I'm Theo, David's grandchild."
