Chapter Five
1740
The pounding echo of my heart marched in tune with the pounding ache of my head. The soft sound of classical music could be heard faintly in the distance.
The air filled heavily with the smell of cedar wood, cigars and the scent of wax candles burning.Starting to feel my senses come back, I slowly open my eyes while a groan bellows within my throat.
Lifting my face up from the hard dirt ground I feel my stomach turn as If I had been thrown around on a rollercoaster. Inhaling sharply my wobbly legs try to push myself up from the help of a nearby wooden table.
Looking around I noticed I was in a tent, when all of a sudden my memories start flashing back. A dizziness quickly soon approaches while pure panic starts to set in, quickly turning around I eye out my surroundings.
The last thing I remember is getting her cards read by that crazy fortune teller at the Greenwich Carnival. When a human is put into an unimaginable situation the brain will to convince itself of reasoning but in this situation I had nothing.
Trying to convince myself of something logical, anything that would make sense. I quickly start to walk over to the exit while trying to feel the back of my head for any injuries.Light was radiating through the tent, could I have possibly been knocked out for a whole day?.
Cody & Olivia must be freaking out, surely they wouldn't of left me here. Brielle's right hand was holding the tent open as it started to shake when a cold shiver dropped down her spine.
"You're not in Kansas anymore Dorothy" I whispered to my self.
BRIELLE
Everything was gone. The rides, the Game shops and all the big food stands instead stood Many wooden stalls some selling food and fruit, Even on stall was selling soap. But thats not what caught my attention in complete sickness.
In the dusty distance she spotted a woman dressed elegantly in what looked like something out of the Victorian era.The woman held umbrella's while the men had top hats and a waist coat. Little children were in groups playing with ribbons and eating corn on the cob.
The more I peaked out the more people I noticed. It was if a Jane Austen book had come to life. The acting, the beautiful costumes and the scenery. It must be an reenactment of some sort.
Stepping out of the tent, I silently remind myself not to trip over the many ropes and pegs that were impeded into the ground.
I cautiously start making my way over to the big crowd of people when I notice the weird looks I was getting from the dressed up actors.
An older man dressed in fine attire was standing right at the back of the crowd while looking straight ahead .Utter shock was expressed when I made my presence know.
" Hi,, I'm so sorry t-to bother you, I know you guys are doing this reenactment thing and all, and must I say your acting is so life like," I chuckle nervously forcing a smile.
"but would you have a phone I could borrow, you see my friends left m-" .
A bold voice interrupted me as a man made his way slowly up three steps with a cane onto the platform. He looked like he could have been the mayor back in the day with many badges presented across his uniformed chest.
Directing my attention back to the man he shook his head in disgust as if I was shaming the very ground he walked on. Sighing in frustration I cross my arms and divert my attention back to the front of the stage.
"Lords and Ladies, I welcome you to the new year our God, One thousand ,seven hundred and Forty in Grand honour we celebrate.Generously hosted by the Earl of Greenwich, his Lord Dalton II ,the first ever Greenwich Fair."
Cheers radiated amoungst the large crowd while hearing people shout out "Bravo-Bravo". The applause is soon faded to a mute by the racing thoughts I was coming to terms with.Did he just say 1740?.
A crack of lightning jolts me from my scheming thoughts as rain starts trickling down my face . The large group of actors start to scatter like running ants.
It's time to get the hell out of here, I tell my self . Feeling my phone in my hidden front pocket on my dress I feel a sense of security.
I'll just get a taxi and call Olivia & Cody when I reach home ,and everything will be fine I start convincing myself.Drastically turning around I start searching for cover.
I suddenly see the tent that I awoke in earlier.Picking up speed, I try to dodge the rain when I'm suddenly met with a force.
Hit back,I'm faced with the muddy ground as dirt is flicked across my cheek and the burning scrape of skin removed from my knee. I immediately start to notice my bloodied knee and the sharp grey rock impeded into the ground.
Looking up ,I notice a tall muscular man dress in traditional mid century attire hoarding over me. Pulling my self up from the ground I see nothing but his angry looming scowl.
"Hi, I'm sorry about that" with an apologetic look and with a slight nod to address a farewell to the scowling stranger.
I start turning around to sprint back to the tent when his big arm grabs mine.
"What the hell do you think your doing?Let me go you Bastard!, its raining",I shout over while struggling to get out of his grip.
He dragged me over to the tent where we were both protected from the rain.Letting go of my hand I flicked his hand off like it was poison.
Nothing now could be heard but drops of water seeping from our drenched clothing and the beating drum of my racing heart. His height towered over me as my arms were crossed and my chin pointed high.
I must admit his presence did seem quite intimidating but I wouldn't let him know that. His silence was alarming, like he was trying to scope me out.
If I was being completley honest he looked liked he belonged on the cover of a mens magazine. His Eyes where a dark stormy grey, thick eyes brows and eyelashes and even though his facade was tough I saw warmth within his eyes.
A clean shaven face with a strong jaw line with a strong broad muscular frame filled out the traditional era clothing.
"I have never in all my years, encountered such disgusting fowl language from a mere girl. I demand you to tell me your name !?" he spat.
My face turned red with anger."Firstly You can stop with the stupid act, that ended a long time ago when you dragged me all the way here. How dare you .!"I shout while poking his chest.
I take back what I said about the warmth in his eyes, I was completely wrong. His eyes now turned cold as ice."How Dare I?," Letting out a malicious laugh. This made my anger rage even more.
"My Patience is wearing thin girl ,you are lucky I haven't cut your tongue out and thrown you in the stocks. Who do you answer to , Your father or is it your husband? how shameful you must be to them."
His face now closer to mine creating a degrading stance between the two of us.If he thinks he can belittle me and scare me well he has another thing coming. I poke my finger hard into his chest. The tension starts to rise while my heart starts to pound, when I start to notice how close we are standing .
" I don't answer to anyone, nor do I bloody answer to you".Turning my back to his face I cross my arms while staring out past the falling rain. "Such a waste" he sighed ."what did you say !"I shot back.
"Your employer is probably looking for his lowly maid, I presume by your filthy attire you work here, so you will do well to heed my word and head back to your little train cart immediately or where ever that it is you come from."
he curtly dismissed me while brushing down his jacket."Oh and mark my words , if I ever come across you again,I will make your life a living hell, do you understand.?" retreating back he gave me a stern look.
Rolling my eyes ,I release a long extended sigh.Just let it go Brielle, you will never have to see that prick ever again, he isn't worth it, just stay focused and go home.
"Look. it's been a real long and crazy day,I really don't have time for this, and don't worry I intend to stay away far away from you as I possibly can, , you repulsive jerk".
I start walking out into the rain without a further glance.I see a clearing where other people were exiting the grounds. The rain pelted down as I walked down the pebbled footpath. Not one car was in sight ,nor was there a single electric street light.
The Buildings were beautifully vintage but looked perfectly new as carriages pulled by horses raced through the town .
Then It Suddenly hit me, the dream I had a week ago,the stories of time travel my grandmother told me continously while growing up ? could it be true. Did that crazy fortune teller just send me 278 Years into the Past!.The year 1740 ?!!.
