Unexpected Change

The bet was the only thing on my mind that night. I was both frightened and excited. What if we really did win. What if I actually had a chance with him. That thought dripped into my dreams, making it a wonderful night.

I woke up to the piercing sound of my alarm clock blaring in my ears. It was louder than usual, extremely, to the point it hurt. I instantly sprang to my knees, clutching my ears as tight as humanly possible. It felt as if a fire alarm was pressed against my ear. I dove across the bed for the night stand. Quickly pressing down on the off button. The painful ringing finally stopped. I fell down onto my bed in the relieving silence. A sweet smell suddenly came into my room. I sat up, sniffing the air, it smelt like...pancakes. I stood up following the sent. Was dad making them? No, he was gone. I followed the scent to the window. I cracked it open and the smell instantly increased. I looked through the open window, but no sign of pancakes. I ignored the delicious smell, and got on with my day.

I pulled on a shirt and some jeans, and put on some light makeup. Braiding my hair, I went down stairs to get some cereal. Finishing breakfast I went out of the front door, with my backpack draped over my shoulder. I walked past a couple of houses before stopping at Jennifer's. The pancake scent was strangely growing.

"Hey Sky." I heard Jennifer's voice. She ran to catch up with me. "What's up?" It sounded like she yelled.

"Why are you talking so loud?" I said quieter than normal.

"I'm not talking loud, well, not louder than usual." She looked at me questioningly. "What, you hung over, or something." She said jokingly, but her face quickly became serious. "Wait, are you?"

"Of course not!" I said quickly, cutting off any ideas she might have been having. "I've just been having a...weird day." The smell of pancakes was now really strong. I paused. "I have been smelling pancakes all morning. Can you smell anything?"

"No...." She gave me a puzzled look. "But, it is funny you mentioned pancakes, because we actually had pancakes for breakfast. I don't smell like pancakes...do I?" She smelled her shirt, searching for any trace of pancake. Was that really where I was smelling it? From three houses!? No, that's...crazy! Promptly I ignored the unrealistic thought, and focused on the day ahead.

The day was normal, like another, except for my new found super senses. My hearing and smell were going wild! I was suddenly jumping at the school bell, and be able to accurately guess exactly what we were having for lunch! Something was off, and as hard as I tried to hide it, it didn't work. Jennifer could tell something was up. She kept asking me if something was up, if I was alright, and giving curious looks when she thought I wasn't looking. I couldn't judge her, something was up, and I don't think I could have been more obvious. During the day, I began to get paranoid by everything I could smell and hear. I was jumping at the now alarming sound of lockers closing, and making faces of disgust at random moments. At the end of the day, I broke.

"Jennifer," I said while pulling her out of the crowd of teenagers. "Meet me at my my house tonight. It's urgent."

I got home as quick as I could trying think of logical explanation, but couldn't think of any. My head was spinning. Maybe I just need some sleep. I was going with that.

When I got home and flopped on my bed. I know had a massive headache. The week just not going very well for me. I laid in my bed and slowly dozed off.

"Skyler?" I felt a hand shaking my shoulder. "Skyler, it's me, Jennifer."

I slowly began to open my eyes to see Jennifer's large brown eyes over me.

"I'm awake, I'm awake."

"Wow, you invite me over than fall asleep."

"Well, I'm awake now."

"So what did you need to talk to me about?" Jennifer said while moving to sit at the end of my bed.

After getting some sleep, I actually felt fine. I guess sleep was really the answer! I guess I was just over reacting. The question was should I tell Jennifer? It sounded weird, and random. Maybe I shouldn't tell her. I was just having an off day. Besides I sounded absolutely crazy! What was I going to tell her, that my senses were having random mood swings? No. I decided that nothing, was better than crazy.

"Nothing." I finally replied.

"Nothing?" Jennifer gave me a questioning look.

"Nothing." I repeated.

"So...nothing is urgent?"

"Yep."

"What is going on with you today? All day you have been acting weird all day, than come to me saying to meet at your house and that it was argent, and now you're saying nothing's wrong? Why won't you just tell me?"

"Nothings wrong. I have just been having an off day, that's all." I replied. She slightly rolled her eyes, and gave out a small, "Fine, don't tell me." I decided to just to drop the subject, instead of replying.

"Well I'm going to go home then." She said while walking out of my room.

After she left, I sat there on my bed thinking if I just should have told her. It wasn't really a big deal anyway. Well, she'll get over it tomorrow. I then went downstairs, ate some dinner, did homework, made myself some camomile tea, drank it, and went back to bed.

The next morning, I woke up refreshed. No head aches, no weird senses, and I woke up earlier than my alarm ready for the day. I got up testing my sense of smell by sniffing the air, just to be sure, but smelt nothing. I tested my hearing by slightly slamming the door seeing how loud it was, and it too was normal. Everything was, once again, normal, except for the fact I looked ridiculous randomly sniffing the air and slamming doors. Good thing there was no one around to see me.

That morning I started out with a quick shower to wash away the remains of yesterday. One thing that was off though, was that my hair felt unusually thick, and full. Maybe it was the universes way of saying sorry for yesterday. I got out of the shower, and after getting dressed, moved to the mirror in my room to do my hair. After grabbing the brush I looked into the mirror. I instantly jumped backwards, making the brush fly from my hand. Was I really seeing this? I blinked a couple times, trying to clear any haze that might have been there, but nothing changed. This couldn't be...my hair. I reached up running my fingers through my hair to confirm its existence. I turned from side to side looking at it from different angels. It had...changed. It was much thicker and fuller, and was layered. It wasn't even the right color! In fact, it was several colors! It was dark brown with midnight black streaks entangled in it, which ended in snow white tips. I stared back at my reflection in awe, when suddenly, I saw nothing new, something glitter. I zoomed in on the mirror examining my eyes. They were...gold! First senses go off the hook, and now my eyes and hair are completely different! What was happening to me?!

I went back to my my bed and sat down, taking in, and letting out deep, shaky breaths. I just need to relax. I've changed and I need to accept it. I looked back at the mirror seeing my new found look. Maybe this isn't even a bad change. I mean, my hair is gorgeous! This thought strengthened me, why not embrace and show off my new look. And I mean, my eyes were amazing! Although this change makes me stand out, I look good!

I finished getting ready by brushing out my hair, and wore it freely on my back. I also added some mascara to make my golden eyes pop out. That morning I stepped out the door, into the world, with confidence. But than I wondered what people would think. I could already hear Jessica's icy voice in my head saying, "Trying so hard for people to notice you, you have to completely redo your hair in some crazy way? And what are those? Colored contacts! Way to try too hard!" I could hear her shrill laugh echoing through my head. At that moment I turned back inside, found a large beanie to put my hair up in, and flipped on some sunglasses. I head back out the door for a second time. But quickly stopped. What was I thinking!? I don't care about what Jessica thinks! This was my life! I took off the beanie and glasses, and ran them back inside. I went outside for the third time, only to pause again. On second thought, I don't feel like being humiliated. I went back inside, grabbed the beanie and glasses, and headed out for the last time.

I entered Mrs. Harrison's class with my unexplained changes successfully concealed, but not so much afterwards.

"Hey." I waved to Jennifer as I walked into English. She replied with a small wave, but avoiding eye contact. She must have still been a little ticked off from yesterday, but she'll get over it. The beginning of class was good until we got into our independent work. Until Jessica decided to make "friendly conversation". I would be surprised if anything friendly has come out of that venomous mouth.

"So, what's with the beani and glass? Finally giving the world a break from looking at your hideous features?" I'm not sure hideous is the right word.

"Can you not just back off for once in your pathetic life?" Jennifer spat at her. Jessica's eyes narrowed in response. Jessica turned back around to her work.

"But seriously," Jennifer turned curiously to me. "What is up with the hat and glasses?"

"Oh...it's nothing." A spark of irritation flashed in Jennifer's eyes.

"Oh, so you won't tell me again. Is everything a secret with you now?"

"Okay, okay, I'll tell you what's going on later." I said in attempt to calm her. Some of the other students started glancing at us, secretly listening on.

"Or you could figure out right now. " Jessica turned back to us with a smirk rising slightly.

"Eve's dropping again I see." Ignoring the comment, she continued on. "In fact we can all find out." She raised her voice slightly to the front of the room. "Mrs. Harrison, Skyler is disobeying the rules of no hats or sunglasses inside the school."
Both Jennifer and I shot Jessica a poisonous glare.

"She's right Miss Peterson, take them off." Taking in a deep breath, I pulls off my accessories. Everyone in the room glanced at me, just to come back in double takes of wide eye expressions. Jessica being taken most by surprise. The room went painfully silent. I went hot with everyone's gaze burning into me. My mind raced wondering what people would think. The silence was suddenly disrupted by the bell. I instantly picked up my things walked straight out the door, with my head ducked through the halls.

I went through the rest of the day with other students stealing glances at my new look, with a couple of complements here and there. Jennifer was especially quite. She never talked to me once the rest of the school, till she finally broke the silence when we were walking home.

We walked with a wall between us, with nothing but a window to sneak glances. Till suddenly Jennifer spoke. "So when were you going to tell me?" Taken a tad back that we were out of not talking, I asked "What?" Jennifer rolled her eyes slightly.

"You know," she gestured toward my hair. "The hair thing." I took a deep breath. Would I tell her the whole thing, or try to lie out of it? After juggling out the pros and cons, I decided that the truth was best.

"The truth is, I woke up this morning...and it was like this."

"Seriously, that's what your going tell me? If your going to lie to me, at least make it a believable one."

"I'm telling the truth! I seriously don't know what happened! I just woke up this way." I grabbed her shoulder to keep her from walking away. "You got to believe me." I whispered

She paused looking at me for a moment.

"What were you hiding from me yesterday?" She asked. I deeply considered my next words, attempting to not make the position I was in worse.

"Okay, the truth is, I'm changing. I don't know how, and I don't know what for, but I am. What was happening yesterday was my sense of smell and hearing were going crazy, to the point I thought I was going crazy." I began to let go, and thought I would never stop. The more I said the faster I talked. "Everything has been amplified. I was smelling things houses away, every loud ring sounded like a gun shot in my ears, and then after I slept it all just vanished. That's why I never told you, because I knew you would react like this, and I thought I had imagined the whole thing. And now I woke up with this," I gestured toward my hair. "Which makes me think I didn't imagine anything yesterday, and something weird is going on!" I stopped for a moment staring up at Jennifer's shocked expression. My voice quieted. "I just don't know what's happening to me." The shock slowly faded from Jennifer's face.

"Something weird must be going on for you to be having a brake down like this." She joked. I gave her a small smile. She pulled me into a brief, but tight hug. She let go of me and looked into my eyes. I watched her face change from calm to in wonderment.

"Your eyes," she said. "They're gold!"

"Ya, I figured that out this morning." I said sheepishly.

"And you tried to hide all this!? This is..."

"Weird and unnatural."

"Awesome! I'm mean, you look gorgeous!" Well this was certainly unexpected.

"So does this mean you believe me, and forgive me for not telling you sooner?"

"Of course, what did you think the hug was for?"

"I don't know. Maybe you pitied me horribly at my failed attempt to convince you." Jennifer let out a small laugh, and we walked home together.
