Chapter 99

[Vaes Dothrak]

Daenerys entered Vaes Dothrak with the horde. A mounted Bloodrider nudged her forward. "Hey, Great Khaleesi. Move your ass," he ordered in Dothraki.

As she approached a domed structure, Khal Moro and two Bloodriders awaited her on horseback. "Welcome home, Khaleesi," Khal Moro said. Another Bloodrider guided Daenerys inside.

Inside, she stood before a platform where a middle-aged Dothraki woman waited. Younger Dothraki women surrounded her and spoke in their language. "Go." The Bloodriders left the room.

The older woman nodded to the younger ones, who quickly stripped Daenerys of her clothing. "What are you doing?! Take your hands off me! I will have your heads!" she shouted.

One of the younger women handed Daenerys a simple brown garment. She took it and put it on. "You have made a mistake. One you will regret. I am the wife of the Great Khal."

"We know who you are. I remember you eating the stallion's heart. Why didn't you come to us after Khal Drogo died?" the Dothraki Matron replied.

"Because I am Daenerys Stormborn, the Breaker of Chains, the Queen of Meereen, and the Mother of Dragons. My place is not here with you."

"You were the wife of the Great Khal. You thought he would conquer the world with you at his side. He didn't. I was the wife of Khal Savo. I thought the same. We were all young once. But we understand how things are. You will learn too, if you stay with us."

"Where else would I go? Every khaleesi becomes Dosh Khaleen."

"Yes. But you went out into the world. That is forbidden. All the khalasars returned for the Khalar Vezhven. They will decide which cities will be sacked and which tribes enslaved. And now, they will decide what to do with Khal Drogo's widow. With luck, your place will be here with us, Mother of Dragons. It's the best you can hope for now."

[Meereen Great Pyramid Seaside - Day]

A ship entered the harbor. Tyrion, Varys, Missandei, and Grey Worm stood on the shore, watching it approach.

Grey Worm asked, "You invite the enemy into our city?"

"I did. As a clever man once told me, 'We make peace with our enemies, not our friends,'" Tyrion replied, starting to walk away as the others followed him.

Grey Worm stated, "I don't make peace with the queen's enemies. I kill the queen's enemies."

"Yes, that's the military approach. And how has that worked here in Meereen? I represent the diplomatic approach," Tyrion said as he and Varys ascended the stairs to the Great Pyramid.

Missandei added, "Our queen tried to make peace with the Masters, and they tried to murder her."

Tyrion and Varys turned back to face Missandei and Grey Worm. "We enter these negotiations with open eyes. Trust me. My own recent experience with slavery has taught me the horrors of that institution."

"How many days were you a slave?" Missandei asked.

Tyrion stammered, "Long enough to know."

"Not long enough to understand," she replied.

Tyrion and Varys continued up the steps, followed by Missandei and Grey Worm.

[Council Chamber]

Tyrion, Varys, Missandei, and Grey Worm found themselves in the company of three masters: Yezzan Zo Qaggaz, Razdal Mo Eraz, and Belicho Paenymion.

Yezzan remarked, "I bought this dwarf for a single gold honor. Yet here you are, at the top of the Great Pyramid of Meereen. Quite an achievement."

Tyrion raised his cup, "Here's to reversals of fortune."

Razdal interrupted, "We came to meet the queen but instead were met by a dwarf and a eunuch. Let's make this simple. What do you want?"

Belicho replied, "We want you to leave Slaver's Bay. Take your dragons and mercenaries and go."

Razdal added, "Queen Daenerys won't remain in Meereen forever. She's headed west."

"When we last met, I offered her ships to return to Westeros. She turned them down," Razdal stated.

Missandei defended, "She refused because many still live in chains."

"Just as they have since the dawn of time," Yezzan pointed out.

"Not anymore," Grey Worm countered.

Yezzan shot back, "You believe you're free? You still take orders. Your master just has silver hair and breasts."

"Friends, friends, please," Tyrion interjected.

Grey Worm glared at Yezzan.

"There have always been the wealthy and powerful, and those with nothing. That's how the world works. I'm not here to change it."

"Slavery is the way of our world," Yezzan reiterated.

"You don't need slaves to make money. There haven't been slaves in Westeros for hundreds of years, and I grew up richer than any of you. Our queen realizes she made a mistake by abolishing slavery without a replacement system. Here's her proposal: Slavery will not return to Meereen, but the other cities of Slaver's Bay will have time to adjust."

Tyrion paused. "What does that mean?" Yezzan asked.

"Instead of ending slavery overnight, we will give you seven years to phase it out." The masters exchanged glances.

"Slaveholders will be compensated fairly for their losses. In return, you must stop supporting the Sons of the Harpy," Tyrion continued.

"We do not support the Sons of the Harpy," Yezzan argued.

"Fine, but you will cut off support regardless. I hope you accept this offer. You won't find a better one."

Tyrion rang a bell from the table. "Let us embrace freedom instead of being overwhelmed by it. And as a parting gift to our honored guests..." Three women entered and sat in the laps of the masters. "Give freedom a chance. See if it tastes as good as what came before."

With that, Tyrion left, followed by Varys, Missandei, and Grey Worm.

[Great Pyramid Audience Chamber]

A group of commoner representatives stood at the foot of the throne, whispering in Valyrian. Tyrion, Missandei, and Grey Worm entered the throne platform.

"My friends! Large sorry...you wait so fat time," Tyrion attempted to speak in Valyrian.

"Perhaps I should translate for you," Missandei suggested.

"We speak the Common Tongue," replied the first man.

"Excellent," Tyrion said. "You met with the slavers today."

"I did," confirmed the second man.

"Our brothers and sisters died fighting these scum. Now you invite them to our city and drink wine with them."

"I imagine this room was built so the rulers could intimidate the ruled," Tyrion said as he descended the steps toward the men, with Missandei and Grey Worm following.

"But I am not your ruler. I'm not the Breaker of Chains. I'm not the Unburnt. And I am certainly not the Mother of Dragons."

They reached the bottom of the steps, facing the men.

"You are a stranger here. So why do you represent Meereen in these talks with our enemies?" the first man asked.

"Because our queen chose me as her advisor. Until she returns from her travels—"

"When does she return?" the second man interrupted.

"Soon. You have my word."

"We don't know you. We don't trust you. We know Torgo Nudho. We fight with him against the Masters. We trust him."

"And that is exactly why Grey Worm took part in these negotiations. As commander of the Unsullied, he knows how to defeat the slavers and when to make peace."

"You have made peace with the slavers?"

"We offered terms."

[Great Pyramid Seaside]

Tyrion, Grey Worm, and Missandei walked side by side.

"Do not use me for your lies," Grey Worm warned.

"They respect you," Tyrion replied.

"They respect me because they know who I am. They know I am loyal."

"As do I," Tyrion said.

"I am loyal to my queen, not you. If you betray her work, you are my enemy."

"I am not betraying her work. I am trying to save her city."

"You promised the slavers they could keep slavery," Missandei pointed out.

"For a short time," Tyrion defended.

"Seven years is not a short time for a slave," she countered.

"You're right. Slavery is a horror that should end now. War is a horror that should also end now. I can't do both today."

"You are wrong to trust these men," Grey Worm said.

"I don't trust the Masters. I trust their self-interest. They're reliable as long as they think working with me benefits them."

"You don't know them. You don't understand them. We are not human in their eyes. They see me as a weapon and her as a whore."

"They see me as a misshapen little beast. Their contempt is their weakness. They'll underestimate us, and we will use that."

"You will not use them. They will use you. That is what they do."

[Vaes Dothrak - Night]

Dothraki men and women celebrated in the streets. Meanwhile, Jorah and Daario slipped through the stables. They crouched by a railing and saw a Dothraki couple in the act of intimacy.

"I should have been born a Dothraki," Daario joked.

They sneaked into an alley but soon spotted two Dothraki men approaching. Jorah pulled Daario aside. "Come on." They stepped forward to meet the men, speaking in Dothraki. "My friends... We wandered off from the Western Market and got lost. Could you show us the way back?" Jorah said.

"What do you sell?" one Dothraki man asked. "Wine. Come to my stall tomorrow, I'll give you a cask of the Arbor's finest."

"You're not merchants." The first Dothraki man nodded to his companion. "Get the others." The second man dashed down the alley. Daario chased after him. Jorah swung at the first man but missed. The Dothraki retaliated, kneeing Jorah in the face and sending him to the ground.

As Daario pursued the fleeing Dothraki, Jorah struck his opponent twice, both hits blocked. The Dothraki responded with a punch that knocked Jorah back. In the alley, Daario caught up to the other man, covered his mouth, and broke his neck.

Jorah struggled again, trying to throw sand at his foe, but missed. The Dothraki grabbed him by the throat, choking him. Just then, Daario stabbed the man from behind, killing him. "Told you, I'm very attached to this knife," he said, slipping the dagger into his shirt.

Jorah got back on his feet. "You all right?"

"If they find a body with a stab wound, the whole city will be looking for us."

Daario picked up a rock and smashed the dead Dothraki several times. "Huh."

[Temple Of The Dosh Khaleen]

Daenerys sat among the Dosh Khaleen. The women whispered amongst themselves, while the leader was next to her. They began to speak in Dothraki.

"Some think Dothraki shouldn't mix with outsiders. They are foolish. They forget we've always mixed our blood. This one is Lhazareen. Her Khal found her hiding in a well after he burned her village. How old were you?" the leader asked.

"Twelve." The Lhazareen woman answered.

"A year later, she had a daughter. How did he show his happiness?"

"He broke my ribs."

"We are not queens here, but the khals need our wisdom. Our lives have meaning."

"That is more than most have," Daenerys interjected.

"When the khals gather for Khalar Vezhven tomorrow night, I hope they let you stay with us. The alternatives are not good," the leader continued.

"I need to make water."

"You can't run from Dothraki. You know this."

"I will never run from Dothraki."

"Go, show her," the leader told the Lhazareen woman.

The Lhazareen woman took Daenerys outside the temple. They walked together.

"I needed fresh air. The old women stink," Daenerys said.

"They do stink."

"You must have been very young when your Khal died."

"Sixteen."

"Too bad he didn't die sooner."

Daenerys and the Lhazareen woman exchanged smiles.

"Yes, too bad."

The pair turned a corner, arriving at a hidden spot in the desert.

"Is it true you have three dragons?" the Lhazareen woman asked.

"Mm-hmm."

"And they breathe fire?"

"They do. Would you like to see them one day?"

"I am Dosh Khaleen. I can never leave Vaes Dothrak until I rise as smoke from the pyre on the day I die."

Suddenly, Daario grabbed the Lhazareen woman from behind, covering her mouth and pressing a dagger against her neck. Jorah stood behind Daario.

"No, don't hurt her," Daenerys said.

"She'll give us away," Daario countered.

"We have to go now," Jorah insisted.

Daenerys seized Daario's wrist, making him drop the dagger away from the woman's neck.

"We will never get out of Vaes Dothrak alive."

"All we can do is try," Jorah replied.

"No. We can do more than that. And you're going to help me."

Daenerys turned to the Lhazareen woman, switching to Dothraki. "And you... Have faith in me, Khaleesi. Do not betray me."

The woman nodded.

Daenerys glanced at Daario, who slowly removed his hand from the Lhazareen woman's mouth.

[Temple Of The Dosh Khaleen - Next Day]

The next day in the Temple of the Dosh Khaleen, all the khals met for council. They spoke in Dothraki.

Khal Moro started, "It is forbidden to spill blood or carry weapons in the sacred city."

A khal replied, "So we don't spill blood."

"There's always a little blood," another responded.

"Someone crushed his head with a rock," one noted.

"Aggo belonged to my khalasar. He served me well. Now he's dead. Fuck Aggo," said another khal as he took his seat.

"Bring in Drogo's widow," Khal Moro ordered. Daenerys entered, escorted by a Lhazareen woman and the leader of the Dosh Khaleen. The khals bowed their heads.

"Who cares about her? She's a midget," one khal mocked.

"I like her," another said.

"She's paler than milk," a third chimed in.

"I'd like to know what a khaleesi tastes like," he added.

"Good. You can suck my dick," the first khal retorted, and they all laughed.

"She belongs with the Dosh Khaleen," Khal Moro declared. "The Wise Masters of Yunkai want her. They're offering ten thousand horses for her. What's worth more, one little girl or ten thousand horses?"

"Fuck the Wise Masters. I'll take their horses for myself," Khal Moro cursed.

"Don't you want to know what I think?" Daenerys asked.

All the khals turned to her. "You'd rather be sold into slavery? Or maybe you want to show Rhalko here what you taste like?" Khal Moro quipped.

"No. I don't want either of those things," Daenerys replied.

"We don't care what you want. This is the Temple of the Dosh Khaleen. You have no voice here unless you are Dosh Khaleen. Which you are not, until we decide you are."

"I know where I am. I have been here before. This is where the Dosh Khaleen pronounced my child the Stallion Who Mounts the World."

"And what happened? You trusted a sorceress, like a fool. Your baby is dead because of you. And so is Khal Drogo," another khal said.

"This is where Drogo promised to take his khalasar west, to ride wooden horses across the Black Salt Sea. He swore to me before the Mother of Mountains," Daenerys asserted.

"And you were dumb enough to believe him?"

"And here we are. What great matters do the Great Khals discuss? Which villages to raid? How many girls to take? You are small men. None of you are fit to lead the Dothraki. But I am. So I will," Daenerys stated.

The khals laughed.

"All right. No Dosh Khaleen for you. Instead, we'll take turns with you. Then our bloodriders will too," Khal Moro stood and said. "And if there's anything left of you, we'll let our horses have a turn. You crazy cunt. Did you really think we would serve you?"

Daenerys placed her hand on a fire pit. "You're not going to serve. You're going to die."

One by one, she knocked down the fire pits. The khals shrank back from the flames. As the fire spread, they rushed to escape, but the door was barred.

Outside, Jorah and Daario watched as the temple burned. The Dothraki gathered around the blaze.

Daenerys grabbed the last fire pit and hurled it toward Khal Moro. The fire consumed the temple and the khals within.

When the flames cleared, Daenerys emerged from the inferno, unharmed and naked. The Dothraki bowed to her.

Jorah approached the steps of the burning temple and bowed. Daario stared at her for a moment before following suit.
