Chapter 8: He's coming

Hollow's pov

Itachi stared at me a little while longer as I watched Yahiko-san and Shisui bicker. They were in a heated argument about who was the hottest, although this hideout-area is quite cold.

"There's no way you're hotter than I am." Yahiko said.

"Bitch, I use the fireball jutsu. I'm hotter." Shisui thrust his thumb into his chest. Yahiko scowled. I do not understand. They are both dead. They do not produce body heat, nor do they feel the chill they produce!

I wonder if they have forgotten the difference between the two temperatures, and have somehow convinced themselves that the area they are in is indeed heated, and that their bodies can physically feel it!

"So, what do we do with him now?" Kisame questioned, scratching the back of his neck lightly. Itachi glanced at him before turning his gaze to me. I shrunk back instantly, my hand finding Rin's.

"It's okay, Hollow. Itachi is a good man." Sasodai assured.

"He's right. He wouldn't do anything to hurt you intentionally." Midori smiled at me in what I supposed was a soothing way.

"A-Ah, yes." I looked down. Itachi's eyebrows flickered up briefly, but he didn't ask questions. He just stared, as though maybe that would tell him who I was and where I came from. I fidgeted lightly under his cold gaze. Rin squeezed my hand in a reassuring sort of way. I offered a weak smile in return. She is too kind.

"Are you guys fucking done yet? I'm supposed to watch the brat. There's no way I'm getting beaten because you fuckers hogged him." Hidan strode back into the room. He wasn't wearing his cloak, nor did he have his scythe. He wore a plain shirt and plain bottoms. I  noticed he was barefoot. Did the cold ground not bother him, or did he not feel it?

I know he is a Jashinist. Hikari has taught me about many of the Gods and Goddesses that exist, most outside of this realm. Jashin, while briefly mentioned, still protruded in my mind, the memory of our short chat over him bubbling to the surface. I felt my face drain of any and all color. This was no good. Not at all.

"Back off." Shisui sighed, although he could not be heard.

"Hey, don't ignore me!" Yahiko screeched, shaking his fist angrily at the Uchiha. I flinched slightly at the sheer volume of his voice. He was so boisterous, especially or someone so dead.

"Not so loud, Yahiko!" Midori scolded, shaking her finger at him in an almost menacing way.

"Yeah, you're scaring Hollow." Rin pulled me closer to her, rubbing my shoulder affectionately in attempts to soothe me. Sasodai grunted.

"I believe leader-sama would be fine with me watching her." Itachi stood up, staring at Hidan with a stoic coldness that reminded me of Pein.

"Shit's about to go down." I heard Shisui whisper.

"Do you think they'll fight?" Sasodai's question went unanswered. Tension filled the air.

"Why do you care anyway? It's not like you want to see or talk to your fucking family; you fucking killed them all!" Hidan threw his hands up in the air. I winced, recoiling immediately. Shisui hissed.

"You act like he had a choice, dipshit!" Shisui backed up so he was in front of me, next to the coolly-calm Itachi. There was something about his icy stare that was absolutely terrifying. It struck fear into me, even though it was clearly directed at the now nervous Hidan.

"Hey man, just give me the fucking brat." Shisui picked me up when he heard Hidan's words, his eyes narrowing suspiciously. I shivered, watching as Rin stepped in front of Shisui and I, as though trying to shield her. The ghosts had their eyes narrowed in suspicion.

"I don't trust him." Sasodai said simply.

"None of us do. Who would?" Yahiko scoffed.

"He's up to something." Sasodai shook his head.

"You don't think he'd sacrifice Hollow... do you?" Midori looked scared. Not for herself, but for me.

"I don't think he'd kill her, not after Pein told him not to. Hurt her... I wouldn't put it past him." Rin grimaced, shaking her head as though disappointed. Or maybe just... maybe she was just filled with dread. I am unsure.

"Over my dead body." Yahiko gritted out.

"Yahiko, you're dead." Shisui said.

"Well I'm still here, aren't I?!" He is very loud.

There was the sound of a door flying open, and Deidara groaned. "This dumb TV isn't working, un!" He shrieked.

"Shut up, we're having a fucking standoff!" Hidan called back, not removing his eyes from Itachi's. Kakazu snorted, mumbling something about them being idiots. He never removed his eyes from his money. At least, not that I saw.

"This whole thing is stupid." Kisame yawned as though this were normal. Boring. I looked around. Sasori was gone. I wonder why Midori and Sasodai didn't follow him.

There was the sound of running footsteps, and my ears twitched.

"S-Someone is a-a-approaching." The footsteps were very faint, but I had no doubt that they were there. Rin turned to me with wide eyes.

"F-Footsteps? Running?" Midori looked fearful.

"Y-Yes, ma'am." I answered in a quiet, meek tone. Sasodai let out a hiss through his clenched teeth, and Yahiko looked away. Shisui's grip on me tightened. I looked up at him with a questioning look.

"This isn't good." Rin ran a ghostly hand through her shoulder-length hair.

"W-What is wr-wrong?" I murmured. Midori and Sasodai exchanged jittery looks.

"It's... it's..." Yahiko swallowed hard, even though ghosts aren't really meant to swallow.

"Tobi senses chakra!"

"Shut the fuck up, un!"
