Chapter 5: The Ame Orphans

Third person pov

Pein emerged from the hallway, looking as cold as ever. With his entrance came silence. None of them wanted to anger or annoy the Rinnegan-wielder. The Akatsuki was comprised of very strong, very notable criminals. But even they knew they weren't stronger than Pein.

Well, maybe Itachi was, but Itachi was on a mission. And like the loyal leaf ninja he was, nothing would stop him from completing the task he set out to do. He would never stop. Not until his death.

"Who is this?" Pein eyed the floating child who looked rather terrified. He seemed to be clinging to something, although there was nothing there. He studied him further. The child was small, with smooth, pale skin and odd multi-colored hair.

He had to wonder what a child was doing in a place like this, but he supposed he hadn't just wandered in. Surely one of the other members had brought him in, although he wasn't sure why. Other than his peculiar hair, this kid was nothing special. Just scared.

Hollow stared fearfully at the man in front of her. Somehow, he didn't seem quite real, and yet he radiated power. Behind him was a very beautiful woman. She had blue hair and a very pretty flower in her hair, although Hollow didn't think it was alive.

It was made out of a substance obtained from trees: paper. Floating next to her was a teenager around Shisui's age, maybe a little younger. He had bright orange hair and soft brown eyes. He looked upset, and a little angry as he stared at the scary man. Looking between them, they actually looked very similar. Hollow's eyebrows furrowed.

"This is Hollow, some fucking kid Kakuzu and I found in the woods. He was one of Orochimaru's experiments or some shit, and can see ghosts." Hidan swallowed his fear and spoke up boldly, simmering the tension in the room down slightly.

"It's going to be okay, kid." Shisui muttered as Hollow's fingers dug into his shoulder. It hurt a little, but it was refreshing. He hadn't felt pain in a long time. He also hadn't had anyone to protect or look after in a while. Maybe, just maybe, he could save this kid. Then maybe his life would be worth more.

"Ghosts?" Pein and Yahiko said in sync. Hollow's eyes met Yahiko's, and he let out a loud gasp.

"Whoa, he can see me!" Yahiko all but screamed.

"Yahiko-kun, please!" Midori hissed when Hollow cowered more.

"Sorry, sorry. But... whoa, so he can see us. And touch us, apparently. Hand him over!" Yahiko drifted forward.

"What? No, I'm holding him!" Shisui said defensively.

"Share! I haven't touched something living in a long time." Yahiko begged.

"So? First come first serve." Shisui said snootily.

"Boys, he's not a toy." Sasodai sighed, shaking his head and massaging his temples. Was he really getting a headache after death? Great.

"I don't believe you." Pein said bluntly, eyeing the floating child.

"He knew the names of Sasori-danna's parents, un." Deidara turned the TV off for the time being; the static noise it was emitting was beginning to get annoying.

"So does Kakuzu. That doesn't mean anything." Pein stepped forward, glaring at Hollow. This boy had to be a spy, and had to know which way Hidan and Kakuzu would take back to the hideout. That had to be it.

"Are you going to kill him then?" Kisame questioned.

"He's already seen too much." Pein grunted.

"Whoa, wait! Don't kill him!" Shisui cried.

"I haven't even got to hold him yet!" Yahiko whined as though it were a puppy he was talking about.

"U-Um..." Hollow gulped, staring up at Pein with wide, fearful eyes as he approached.

"Don't touch him!" Sasodai exclaimed. Midori tried to grab Pein's arm, which of course didn't work. She went right through him, gritting her teeth the whole was as Pein reached towards Hollow.

A pole slid from his sleeve, and Yahiko's eyes widened.

"Nope!" The orange haired boy snatched Hollow out of the way just as the pole shot forward, piercing Shisui. The boy looked down in surprise.

"That was close." The Uchiha admitted. Yahiko hugged a shivering Hollow to his chest as though she were a wet kitten.

"No touchies." He said childishly.

"How many years of death, and you're still like this?" Sasodai looked slightly shaken by Hollow's near death, and Midori, terrified.

"Oh, we must get him out of here!" She wailed. The Akatsuki members watched with minimal interest. Pein turned to Hollow with an emotionless expression plastered on his face.

"Don't struggle. You will only make it more painful for yourself." He said to the crying kid in Yahiko's arms.

"B-But, I-I can see gh-ghosts." Hollow said weakly in an attempt to save her own life. Everyone stared at her with some form of pity, even Sasori.

"Nothing you say will save your life." Pein said.

"Tell him Chibi was a good dog and then we'll see what he thinks." Yahiko grumbled almost before the piercing-covered man could finish. Hollow gulped.

"C-Chibi was a-a-a-a good dog?" Hollow tried, wincing when Pein stiffened. Behind him, Konan sucked in a sharp breath. They both stared at her silently as they thought over the words she'd spoken. There was no way she could have known that. Nobody knew about about Chibi but Jiraiya-sensei, Pein, Konan and-

"Yahiko." Pein mumbled just loud enough for Konan and Hollow to hear. He straightened, turning around and walking towards the hallway. "Hidan, you're in charge of him. Don't let him out of your sight, and make sure nothing happens to him."

"W-What?! Why me?!" Hidan sputtered, staring after his leader with a dumbfounded look on his face.

"Are you defying a direct order?" Pein stopped walked for a second. Hidan hung his head.

"No, sir." The Jashinist mumbled, sending Hollow a sour look.

Then, Rin popped out of the wall.
