Chapter 34: Trek to Konoha
Third person pov
They started towards Konoha, Hidan and Meatball Kyle bickering. Hollow kept her eyes on the ground as she tried to think of a way, any way really, to convince the Fourth Hokage to come along with them. She didn't know what kind of guy he was, but she hoped he was nice and understanding. It would not be pretty if they had to force him...
"I can't believe we're actually doing this. I'm a criminal. There's no fucking way they're letting my sorry ass in." Hidan shook his head. He was only here to make sure Hollow didn't die, and to make sure she became a certified badass. So far she was doing alright. She hadn't cried in front of the Raikage, which Hidan would count as a total win.
"Sh-Shisui is from Konoha." Hollow said quietly. The teen grinned down at her, and she offered a small smile back. Shisui ruffled her hair. Hidan's eyebrows shot up, a clear sign he hadn't realized a ghost was with them, or had forgotten.
"Who the hell is Shisui?" Hidan asked. Hollow touched the dead Uchiha's side and pushed some chakra into him.
"Whoa!" Shisui looked at his hands with wide eyes. "This is so cool!"
"Oh, god." Meatball Kyle groaned. "A kid."
"We're fucking screwed if all we have is him." Hidan told Hollow blandly. Hollow looked up at Shisui with worried eyes, but he didn't seem concerned. He simply grinned down at the short girl, hoping that would reassure her at least a little bit.
"I'm Shisui Uchiha. I was known as flash step Shisui when I was still alive." Shisui grinned widely. "I was famous."
"Then why the fuck have I never heard of you, huh?" Hidan retorted. Shisui didn't falter. Hollow supposed that he was used to getting responses like that from Yahiko. The pair of ghosts always seemed to be arguing about something. Hollow couldn't figure out whether they were friends or not. There was really no telling with them.
"I've been dead for years, old man." Shisui shrugged. "Don't ask me. Either way, I'll be recognized in Konoha. I had quite a few friends outside my clan." He grinned widely, putting a hand on Hollow's shoulder. The girl jumped slightly in surprise.
"It doesn't damn well matter. We won't be there for a few days anyway." Meatball Kyle scoffed. Hollow wondered why the pair were so grumpy all the time. Were they sad, maybe? Hollow frowned, looking down. She didn't want them to be sad. She sure hoped she wasn't the one making their moods this way. That would not be good. No, not at all!
"It's not you, Hollow. I promise." Hikari assured. "They're just being men is all."
'Meatball Kyle is no man.' Hollow denied. Meatballs weren't men, no.
They continued to walk, Shisui making it a point to keep Hollow company even when he vanished from Hidan and Meatball Kyle's sight. Hollow was grateful to him for that. Shisui was nice, and she liked nice people. He was nothing like Obito, the other Uchiha in the Akatsuki compound, and he wasn't so blank-faced like Itachi, even if Itachi was a good man.
They stopped at another motel. This one was far nicer than the last, giving Hollow the luxury of a bed, although she hadn't much minded letting Shisui hold her. But she was glad she wouldn't have to bother him this night around. Though, she did have a rather hard time falling asleep. Anxiety over what would happen with Konoha snuck up on her, and she wondered if Minato Namikaze would be willing to listen to anything she had to say at all.
"Hollow, it will be okay." Shisui drifted down so he could look her in the eye. She jumped slightly, scooting back a little out of reflex. He grinned at her. "I can feel the anxiety radiating off of you, but don't worry. I've met Minato, and he's a nice guy. And he'd definitely want world peace."
"What if Konoha doesn't agree to ally with Kumo?" Hollow whispered. "Kumo gave us terms. What if Konoha has none?"
Shisui paused. That was a valid concern. One he hadn't thought of. "The Third Hokage is an understanding and good man. I'm sure he'll come up with something." Shisui assured after a moments pause. The look on Hollow's face told him the girl didn't believe him in the slightest, but she was far too nice to say so, and nodded anyway. He chuckled.
"I have a whole clan in Konoha, Hollow, even if they are dead. They'll vouch for you. The head of the clan was an important man before he died. If you made him visible, I'm sure he'd have nothing but praise to pour on you."
Hollow's cheeks glowed blue, and she glanced down, fingering the edges of the bed's comforter. "What i-if Minato-san doesn't want to leave with us?" Hollow whispered so quietly Shisui barely heard. "What if h-he doesn't wish to be u-uprooted and dragged a-across the great nations j-just to have a race?"
"Then we'll force him."
"O-Oh, okay."
Hollow fell asleep soon after their conversation. The night passed quickly, and the next day they began to walk again. At some point Hidan insisted they run the rest of the way, so Shisui picked up Hollow, and Hollow held Meatball Kyle. They covered a lot more ground that way. Hidan couldn't even really get tired, being immortal and all, and was able to make it pretty far before deciding to stop for a break.
"I think we can make it by lunch." Hidan panted. "If we keep running."
"R-Really? That fast?" Hollow blinked, eyes wide.
"Fuck yeah. I'm am badass, after all." Hidan grinned back.
Hollow smiled a hesitant smile back, cheeks blue. She felt her nerves spike considerably, and she began to panic over what she'd say to the Forth Hokage when they finally found him. All in all, she really couldn't do much but hope for the best, and maybe that was okay.
