Chapter 15: A Plan
Third Person Pov
Tobi bounced into the meeting room, the last person to arrive. Hollow shrunk into the large chair she'd been placed in, fear welling up inside of her. The resident ghosts around her stood tall, even though unseen, still ready to protect the small girl in any way they could. Hidan, who was seated next to the girl, had his seat scooted closer to hers. Everyone, especially the ghosts who could lurk unseen and untouched by the rest of the world, knew that Hidan was not a good man. But for some reason, none of them doubted that he'd put himself between her and anything that dared try to harm her. Whether it was because she was a child, or something else, nobody really knew.
"So, leader-sama, why did you call us here? Is it about Hollow?" Kisame asked, leaning back in his seat in a relaxed sort of way.
"Why else would we be here, un?" Deidara yawned loudly, earning an eye-roll from Sasori, who clearly had better places to be, and better places to do.
"Let's just start." Sasori sighed, clearly annoyed. "I don't like waiting."
The ghostly Midori rolled her eyes at him, and Sasodai patted her back, deadpanning sheepishly at his wife's behavior. Shisui floated by Hollow's side, ready to grab her, and Yahiko floated just behind her chair, carefully watching everyone and what they did. Rin had floated through the table to hover by Obito, who'd taken his seat across from the nervous, rainbow-haired girl. Who's feet were still bleeding...
"Silence." Pein didn't have to raise his voice, or yell. He was respected here, in this room. This was his domain.
"We've called you here for a very important reason." Konan joined in. She flanked Pein's chair at the head of the large table, her sharp eyes trailing over the rest of the Akatsuki, who stared back with equally calculating eyes.
"Just tell us why we're here, leader-sama." Kakuzu rumbled, his fingers twitching. He'd almost finished recounting that money too. It was a shame he'd have to start all over again. A real annoyance, really.
"You all know the Akatsuki's... current goal, correct?" Pein checked. Hidan was the one to speak up this time.
"Fuck yeah we do. You mention it every time we fucking meet. Our goal is to get the tailed beasts and to turn the damn things into weapons or some shit. For world peace or some dreamy fuckshit." Hidan shrugged as though it were no big deal, and Hollow flinched, her eyes widening. She was new to this world, but even she knew how bad of an idea that was. Weapons, out of the tailed beasts?! What if they fell into the wrong hands?! Actually, the Akatsuki probably was the wrong hands!
"Well, that is no longer our plan."
Everyone perked up with interest at that, eyeing their leader curiously. Tobi went rigid with what seemed like frustration, or maybe anger. He stared at Pein, who didn't turn to look at him, or meet his gaze. He let his eyes settle on everyone but Tobi, telling Hollow that Pein was definitely cautious of him, if not scared. She really couldn't blame him. Obito, orange-swirly mask and childish person or not, was quite terrifying.
"Then what the fuck are we gonna do?" Hidan piped up again, propping his elbow up on the table, and letting his chin rest on his hand in an almost lazy manner.
"Yeah, what're we gonna do? Getting the tailed beasts was our plan, un. Our goal." Deidara scratched the back of his head in thought, clearly trying to guess what Pein's new course of action would be. He seemed to be drawing a blank, but nobody could blame him. Not even Itachi had the slightest clue what would happen next.
"Is this because of the dead kid that appeared in your office?" Hidan sighed. Sasori's eyebrows raised.
"A ghost?" He looked more interested than before, at least. Kisame leaned forward in his seat a little, almost as though trying to think.
"Tch, can we just get this over with?" Kakuzu spoke before the fish-like man could open his mouth. Clearly, Kakuzu didn't really care what they ended up doing, so long as he got money for it.
"This girl, Hollow," Pein pointed to her. Deidara blinked slightly in surprise. "Is our new plan."
"No offence, leader-sama." Kisame cleared his throat a little. "But how can a... girl be the plan. That's not a plan. She's a person." Kisame nodded to Hollow.
"Well, Kisame, she's... she is a person, yes, but she is our plan. For world peace." Konan spoke coolly, still standing stoically by Pein's chair. The Rinnegan wielder nodded. Because that made total and perfect logical sense. And absolutely no leaps in said logic were made whatsoever. Clearly.
"Does this mean Yahiko's awful speech actually worked?" Shisui whispered, horrified. He was immediately hit and shushed.
"Konan is correct. Hollow is our main priority. She will bring about world peace." Pein assured.
Hollow's eyes widened slightly.
What was she just volunteered for?
