Chapter 14: Yahiko
Third person pov
Muffled screeching caught Pein's attention, but he tried to ignore it. One of the downfall of recruiting S-rank criminals was that they were all either really damaged, or fucked up in the head. There was no in-between. Pein had come to accept this after years of trying to find out what the actual hell was wrong with these people. There were no answers for what was happening in this underground base.
"MIRACLE CHILD-"
Pein looked to Konan, who was standing in the corner just as she always seemed to insist on doing. The blue-haired woman could only shrug, clearly not knowing what to think either. It wasn't Tobi. The chakra signature wasn't the same, nor was the voice. The voice was familiar, but not familiar enough. It was the same with the chakra signature.
"Get the fuck back here, you little shit!" Pein had no doubt that voice belonged their resident religious freak, Hidan. He shared a glance with Konan. Clearly, something was going on with Hollow. What that thing was, Pein wasn't sure, but he hoped they hadn't killed the kid. Seeing ghosts was a useful skill, and Hollow had the ability to see and talk to Yahiko. That was valuable to both Pein and Konan.
"MIRACLE!" Yahiko shrieked, flying at Pein's door with his foot outstretched. He made contact, sending the thick metal slab straight to the ground. Yahiko flew in with all the enthusiasm of a gay barista, rolling on the ground with Hollow still in his arms and hopping to his feet, holding the small, terrified girl up. Hidan's cursing could be heard coming closer down the hall as Pein got to his feet.
"Y...Yahiko." He breathed, his Rinnegan eyes widening more than they ever really had from sheer shock. Yahiko, breathing heavily, held Hollow above his head once more, as though presenting her to his two childhood friends.
"Miracle child has made me visible! I am visible! I can touch all the fuck shit now!" He announced with vulgarities Pein had never heard come from his friend's mouth. Death was changing though, he supposed.
Hidan came skidding through the door, his eyes narrowed, and his fists clenched. Pein stood up, not sure what to do, but feeling as though he should be standing for whatever would be happening next. "Hand her the fuck over!" Hidan demanded angrily, his teeth grinding, and his fists clenched. Yahiko spared him a glance before turning back to his friends Konan and Nagato, who also went by Pein now.
"I can feel her chakra seeping out of me." Yahiko started simply, lowering Hollow to the ground. Her legs shook due to her bloody feet, and her eyes were wide with fear from Pein's presence, and from the heart-stopping ride she'd just gone on. Hidan immediately stepped forward to scoop her up, glaring at Yahiko and muttering vulgarities under his breath. The dead boy continued nonetheless. "This girl, Hollow, is amazing. She is kind, and she doesn't know much about the world yet. She hasn't gotten a chance to live her life. I want you to protect her with everything you have. I want her to be a ninja like we desperately wanted to be as kids, because I know she has the potential for it. If anything happens to her... I will leave, and you will never see, or hear from me again. You'll never feel my presence in the room. You'll have to live knowing that I am silently hating you, and wishing death on your person."
Konan swallowed heavily, while Pein simply nodded. In Ame, he could feel his real body crying. Tears were something he hadn't felt in a long, long time, and yet there they were. He could sense them, rolling down his pale and sunken cheeks. Yahiko wasn't done. "Hollow has potential nobody else does. She's got something sealed inside of her, something that isn't a tailed beast, and something that could potentially save the world, or at least help it. It's something warm, and kind. I felt it when I became like... this. Solid. Here. I think she could fix your body in the future, and help to bring about world peace. She hasn't had time to sin yet. She is as pure as they get right now."
"I... see." Pein's eyes flashed, and something seemed to click as he stared at Hollow. Yahiko was right, this boy, well... he supposed she was a girl, according to his use of pronouns. But Yahiko was right. This girl hadn't done anything wrong yet in this world. She hadn't sinned, or acted selfishly. Her eyes held the innocence of a small child, and the curiosity of one too. But they also held fear, something that in time, he'd have to work to diminish. Yahiko had come to him with this, with this warning, and these instructions. He was not about to ignore them.
Besides, Yahiko was right about another thing too. Hollow did hold something much purer and much kinder than any other tailed beast on this planet. She held something warm, kind and powerful.
Something that could one day guide Hollow to bring about world peace, he felt.
"Hidan," Pein looked the Jashinist in the eye. The man immediately stiffened, offering a slightly bow. He didn't want to jostle Hollow too much. "Call for a meeting. We have some important things to discuss."
When the powerful man looked back to where his dead friend and been standing, he was gone. Physically, but somehow, Pein felt that he could feel him better now. Like now that he knew he was there, he could tell.
The second Hidan left, Konan let her tears fall, and Pein sat down heavily in his chair with his head in his hands as his brain processed the fact that they'd just seen and heard from their childhood friend. At first, Pein would have thought it to be a trick, but there was no denying that that had been Yahiko, and he didn't believe Hollow had the evil in her to play such a trick.
Pein didn't care what Madara said. Their plans were changing, and they were changing now.
