Chapter XXXV - Prayer For The Wicked
Alice Cooper stared blankly into the white of her perfectly cleaned and wallpapered wall. The words of the officer in front of her passed her ears. Apparently, her daughter had turned herself in to the police. She shook her head as the officer asked her something again, pulling herself out of her mindless daze. The room around her was spinning, her husband's crossed hands scared her, for the first time he did not wear confidence, he was frightened of what came next.
"Is it true Mrs. Cooper, did she shoot the man in self defense?" The officer asked again, running his eyes up and down Alice, trying to catch some sort of sign that she was listening.
Alice nodded, "of course! My daughter is not a monster, all she wanted to do was protect that boy of hers," Alice sighed, no more lies, no more secrets.
The officer wrote it down, tapping the end of his pencil on the notebook he held, "then how come she takes anti depressants?"
Her eyes widened, "my daughter was very sick when she was young, she would often do strange things, so we put her-"
"But she wasn't sick, upon investigation we found that you never contacted a doctor, it was a self diagnose done by you Mrs. Cooper, Elizabeth only acted out because of her pills." The officer said.
Shaking her head Alice grabbed Hal's hand, he put his other hand on her shoulder and shielded her away from the officer's questions, "Alice had a troubled mother, it was in her genes, when Betty had strange behaviors we decided to tackle the problem before it showed up."
"Those symptoms were not medically approved," the officer continued to press.
"What are you saying, officer, that she killed a man because she went crazy for taking anti depressants, well do you know that she stopped taking them a long time ago, said they made her feel numb, hated them, found ways to get rid of them. They were out of her system." Hal raised his voice, making the officer stand up and take his hat off the dining table.
Looking at a crying Alice, the officer nodded, "good day to you, sorry for the disturbance."
As soon as he left and Hal closed the front door, Alice jumped off her chair and sprinted to the phone. Hal caught her before she could call anyone, preventing her from moving.
"Let me go, Hal, I need to call them and report that I am a witness. I can't let my baby spend another day in prison," she pulled at his finger to release her.
Feeling pain, he released her, "Alice, they already know you're a witness, what are you gonna do for them to release her, say you killed him? They're doing their legal work, it's going to take time."
Alice fell on her husband again, tears streaming down her face, "why did we even try to get her back, she is old enough, she could take care of herself."
"Alice, we couldn't leave her with that criminal-" Hal reminded her of why they tried so hard to get Betty back.
Betty watched the moon through the barred window of her prison cell. She wished she was back in that stupid house they rented with Jughead, wished that it would all go back to normal, whatever version of normal they had. Then she realized whatever they had was not normal, it didn't have a normal start, nor did it look like they would have a normal end.
An officer walked into her cell, cuffing her up. It felt horrible, being pinned down by someone to a wall as they put cuffs on you. She tried not to show fear and trust the police, but after what she witnessed on the road with Jughead, she knew that people could be deceiving.
He lead her out of her cell and into an interrogation room. Jughead sat on a chair, getting up the second she walked in. The officer took the cuffs off and closed to door, leaving them alone.
"I thought visiting hours were over?" Betty asked, hugging Jughead.
He caressed her cheek, "I have connections. You stupid stupid girl," he laughed.
Betty shook her head, "If you're in here they'd never let you go, but I am more trustworthy as a self defense suspect."
"I know, but I don't have to like this," Jughead said, hugging her again, "I don't get it, Rat was literally a drug dealer, you did them a favor by killing him."
"Don't say that-" Betty started to cry, "I felt nothing, I felt numb, as if killing someone was the simplest task in the world for me, what if I am a monster?" She asked. She used to be scared of the pills that made her feel numb, but now she was more afraid of being off the meds and still feeling numb.
Jughead hugged her tighter, "Betty, if you're a monster then I am a saint, and we both know that's not true. You made a mistake, and a damn good one. What if he killed you instead-"
"But he didn't," she interrupted him, "he didn't kill me, or you, I killed him."
He pulled away, looking her in the eyes, "when you get out, I promise we will figure something out."
"I want to join the serpents, Jughead, I want to be in this world of people like me, I can't pretend to be perfect little Betty Cooper." She said.
He shook his head, "then what do you want to be, a flawed serpent princess? Betty you're not that either."
She sighed, "I am something."
"Yeah," Jughead nodded, "you are strong, and you protect those you love, you are dedicated. You are the strongest woman I have ever met, and that strength doesn't come from your ability to kill someone or beat someone, it comes from the heart, the passion to protect," he pointed to her heart.
She laughed, "what can I say, I have my mothers quick thinking. I talked to your dad, by the way, he told me that demons don't control us, we control them."
Jughead raised his eyebrows, "never knew my dad could say something encouraging."
"He loves you, Jughead," she smiled.
He nodded, "in his own way. But, this is not about him. I have to go in a few minutes, promise me you'll be alright and won't get into any trouble."
Betty nodded, and hugged him again. They stayed like that until the officer came back in and it was Jughead's time to leave. Saying their goodbyes he watched her being led back to her prison cell, it reminded him of the times he'd visit his father in prison as a kid. Everyone he loved ended up here sooner or later.
FP walked into the sheriffs office, sitting himself down in front of the man who hated his guts, "I have something for you," he threw a file down onto his table.
The sheriff looked at it, "Rat's personal profile, what you keep this on everyone who works for you, Jones?"
"Worked, he betrayed us, just Nail did," FP said, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
The sheriff nodded, "isn't that the guy that died a few years ago?"
Before FP could answer a worried Alice Cooper barged into his office, he shook his head, "what is this the gathering of the delinquent's parents?"
"FP," Alice squinted her eyes upon seeing the man who almost ruined her election, "sheriff do you know that the serpents attacked the city a couple of months ago?"
"Oh, come on, Alice, is this what you're here for?" FP asked, "pouring more salt on the wound?"
She shook her head, "you're right, all past hate aside, I am here to testify and claim that the man who attacked my daughter and his son was shot in self defense."
The sheriff took a paper out of his desk, "fill this out," he tossed it to her.
FP walked towards the door as he watched Alice sit down and start writing, "you know Alice, maybe we're finally two parents trying to make everything right. I have no idea how my son fell in love with your daughter of all people, I told him to stay away from crazy blonds by the name Cooper, but it happened-"
"Your point, FP?" She rolled her eyes.
"My point is, it's beautiful, love is. I am not planning to destroy their happiness, she's a good kid, that Betty of yours, and thankfully nothing like her mother." He closed the door and walked off.
His words rang in her head, and for the first time she was not angry with FP Jones, in fact she agreed, thank God she was not like her mother.
