Chapter XIX - Archie Andrews VS. Jughead Jones; Round 1

"Leave her alone, there are so many girls in Riverdale, why'd you have to choose Betty Cooper to destroy?"

Jughead was the first thing on her mind when she stepped out of her house. She couldn't wait to see him in school, even though she knew he might not show up due to his father's recent reputation. Promising herself that no matter what she would support him and show that she is not ashamed of knowing him, Betty got on the bus. She saw the same thing she did every other day, someone talking, a couple making out in the backseats, people staring out the window. She took a window seat too, putting in her headphones and shutting the world out.

School was always the same as well, the second she walked up to her locker Archie Andrews zoomed to her through the crowd of kids, Veronica following him. They circled around Betty, concerned for the girl who stopped talking to them.

Veronica started talking first, looking at her friend sympathetically, "Archie said he found you barefoot in the woods next to...you know who!" She whispered the last part.

"Jughead Jones?" Betty raised one eyebrow, confused by Ronnie's behavior.

Veronica's eyes widened, "don't say his name! He might be around! Have you heard what his father did a few days ago? The Serpents attacked Riverdale!"

Betty sighed, "Veronica, it wasn't Jughead's fault, we are not our parents." She tried to defend Jughead, but it wasn't working.

Archie, noticing how distressed both Ronnie and Betty were, stepped in between them, "look that doesn't matter anymore, what matters is that Betty is alright. I'm so glad that you came to your senses and sent Jughead away, you don't need that kind of attention. If he bothers you again, I'll step in."

She couldn't believe her ears, her friends were listening to her, but they were not hearing her. Betty pushed Archie's hand, which he managed to place on her during his address to her, off her shoulder, "I don't think you guys get it, Jughead is different and, well, we're friends." She couldn't bring herself to say that she likes him just yet.

Spotting Jughead from across the room, Betty smiled, "I have to go," she moved past her friends.

Veronic and Archie watched as Betty made her way towards Jughead. They saw how he took her hand gently and she embraced him.

"Do you think she's sleeping with the enemy?" Veronica asked Archie, making sure to not take her eyes off Betty and Jughead. She wasn't the only one who was staring at them, the whole high school hallway had their eyes on Betty and Jughead.

Archie sighed, "Ronnie, you know Betty is not like that, but Jughead could have done something bad to her."

"Like what?" Veronica got scared, what could Archie be implying happened to her best friend? Even though Veronica did not support Betty's decisions at all, she couldn't help but feel like Betty was perhaps misunderstood. Archie would not listen to Veronica's reasons.

The hot headed red-head decided to confront the well known Jughead Jones after school about Betty. He was determined to get rid of Jughead once and for all.

Jughead's day went by as usual, no one would talk to him, people would avoid his gaze. The only person who had changed was Betty Cooper, who was no longer afraid to sit next to him during lunch and class. He was a bit concerned about her safety, if people hated him so much, what would they do to her? But, of course, he convinced himself she'd be fine, being the daughter of the town's self proclaimed mayors.

From the corner of the lunch line, Betty innocently strolled towards Jughead with her tray. Her face lit up when she saw him, and she finally was enjoying her day in school for the first time. Setting her tray down, she sat right next to Jughead who would not take his eyes off of her. It sent shivers down her spine, and she loved the feeling. Jughead pulled her up and sat her on his lap.

"Too much?" He asked, smirking and eyeing her up and down.

Betty smiled, "a bit, I think you just like people staring at us." She was concerned, what if he was with her for all the attention, Betty's inner doubts started to emerge.

Nodding his head, Jughead put her down and wrapped his arm around her waist, "I hate people staring at us, I want it to be you and me Betty," he leaned in, whispering into her ear, "you and me."

From the corner of her eye, Betty caught Archie staring at them. Feeling a bit uncomfortable she slid down the lunch table bench and started eating her food. Jughead smiled at her and joined. The glorious 30 minutes passed and Betty had to go to her class. She kissed Jughead on the cheek, being as innocent as always, and walked down the hallway. Jughead didn't have anything for the next 45 minutes of his school day and decided to go out onto the football field like always. He sat at the bleachers and didn't bother anyone, and no one dared bother him. This time, however, a certain red-head by the name of Archie Andrews, dared approach Jughead in his untouchable spot.

Archie cleared his throat, trying to get Jughead's attention. Jughead looked at him confused, but continued to ignore his presence. Realizing that he wasn't going to get his attention, Archie sat down next to him.

"Jughead, I want to talk to you," Jughead couldn't help but feel like Archie was acting as if he were a noble knight in shining armor.

Putting down his laptop, which kept all of the secrets that were in Jughead's head, he smiled, "why what about? Archie Andrews."

"It's about Betty"

"Why am I not surprised," Jughead rolled his eyes.

Archie sighed, "hear me out! Betty doesn't know what she's doing, she's confused. Look, her and I have been in a tough position lately, and I know she feels like she can just forget about me with you, but that's not so. She's using you Jughead."

"I'm sorry, what?" He furrowed his eyebrows, he couldn't believe the words that were coming out of Archie's mouth.

"We all know Betty Cooper is in love with me, so just let it go. It would be much easier for everybody if you broke off whatever it is you two are involved in. She'll come crawling back to me anyway," Jughead wasn't sure if Archie was serious or just fooling around.

Jughead stood up, "look man I don't know what your problem is, but what Betty and I have is-"

"Is special?" Archie interrupted him and laughed.

"No," Jughead glared at him, "it's important. Why don't you just leave her alone huh? Leave her alone, there are so many girls in Riverdale, why'd you have to choose Betty Cooper to destroy?"

Archie composed himself after his laughing session, "I am not destroying her, I am trying to help her."

Jughead was about to leave, but he wanted to give Archie, his old friend, a piece of his mind, "help her? Where were you when she chased after you in 7th grade, where were you when her heart broke because you gave Cheryl Blossom a valentine's day card instead of Betty? Where were you when she needed someone to lean on? When she was madly in love with you and you just pushed her away?" Jughead got into Archie's face, pointing a finger at the red-head.

"And where were you?" Archie asked him.

Sighing Jughead looked down, "not where I was supposed to be. I was a coward sitting in the bleachers, watching it all play out. Well, I'm done playing the coward, she's been in love with you for too long, it's time someone gave her the love back." Jughead took one last look at Archie and picked up his laptop, making his way back to the school building.

"You think she'll ever learn to love you, Jughead? Like you said, she's been in love with me for a long time, you're playing the wrong game Jones."

He could have punched him, he could have ran back and punched Archie Andrews straight in the face, he was strong enough to do that. But, Jughead Jones didn't want to. For once he didn't want to punch anyone, and all because of Betty.

A/N: DOUBLE UPDATE! Alright I'm actually really excited for this! Although my plot is different, it still has the riverdale charm like Betty crushing on Archie forever! Anyway! VOTE AND COMMENT! and have a lovely day.
