Chapter VIII - The Queen Falls
"I got your queen stuck in the corner, there's no way out."
She flinched when he applied his hand to her cheek. Of course, she wouldn't be able to hide it, not from him at least. Betty looked at him with innocent eyes and his were filled with worry and concern.
"What happened to you?" Jughead asked, carefully rubbing his thumb against the sensitive skin.
They were both at school and Betty was worried about what others would think if they see Jughead Jones caressing her cheek. She quickly took his hand off her cheek and smiled, trying to make nothing out of something. "I just fell in the bathtub okay, nothing to worry about."
When she walked off, taking everything she needed out of her locker, he followed her. They were both silent, not feeling safe to talk in front of people. Everyone wasn't staring at Betty Cooper like they always did, they were staring at Jughead who was so close by her side. Betty felt anxious and guilty at the same time. What would her friends think? But at the same time, how dare she ignore Jughead who has been there for her?
"Betty!" Veronica took her by the wrist and pulled her back. Jughead spun around to watch the scene unravel.
Rolling her eyes Veronica forced herself to turn to him, "um, I don't know what you want from my best friend but I think you'd better leave."
Jughead knitted his eyebrows together, more in pain than disgust, "I was just walking Betty to class."
Veronica laughed, "you? Umm, I don't think she'd want that, right Betty?"
This was her chance, she could reveal that Jughead was her friend and even more, but Betty didn't have that much courage in her, "please leave me alone," she said quietly, looking at Jughead.
With a smile of victory on her face Veronica tilted her head to the side, "did you hear that? Leave my best friend alone, freak."
He could have fought back, but what would he have said? He couldn't do anything, especially with Betty's innocent eyes looking helplessly into his. Swallowing his pride, Jughead turned around and started walking with nothing to say. He could still hear Veronica giggle at her victory and it irritated him to the bone.
Veronica turned to Betty, "now that I saved you from him, how are you?"
Instead of sharing in her friend's victory, Betty started walking, "I'm fine, I've been thinking a lot."
"Thinking about what? Archie?" Veronica joked. It was evident that Betty liked him, sometimes she thought that even Archie himself knew, but he denied it because he didn't feel the same way.
"If you have to know, no. I was not thinking of Archie," Betty spun back around and her pony tale hit her face.
Veronica raised her eyebrows, "another young man in your life?" Then suddenly her best friend noticed her bruise, "oh my God, did he do that!?" She raised her voice.
Betty, shocked, pulled Veronica closer to quite her down, "no of course not! Jughead would never hurt me-"
"Jughead would never hurt you?" Veronica raised her eyebrows, "what is that supposed to mean? Also where were you yesterday! You left me with those brainless cheerleaders."
The thought of that made Betty smile, but she couldn't show it. Shaking her head she simply walked off. Veronica wouldn't understand her anyway. In class she scanned the room for a place to sit. Her usual spot next to Archie was opened, and another one next to Jughead. His crown beanie was noticeable out of the crowd. She looked into his kind, but hurt, eyes. Then she looked at Archie, who pulled out a chair for her and she sat down next to him. She looked back at Jughead, who was not looking at her. He was staring out onto the black board, clearly avoiding her gaze.
Knowing that her behavior towards him was uncalled for, Betty was mad at herself, but what else could she do? Kevin, their friend, joined them soon after the bell rang and blocked her view of Jughead.
The entire day, Betty tried to catch a glance of Jughead, but he never looked back. He was good at avoiding her, and it hurt her. Of course, she blamed the entire thing on herself. Betty could have told Veronica that she was going to call with Jughead, instead of turning him down.
School ended and Archie invited Betty to join the gang in the lounge room. Archie and Kevin were in a heated match of chess and Betty and Veronica usually observed as they talked. This time Betty was not feeling very chatty and Ronnie noticed. Even though she asked many times, Betty would not tell her what was bothering her.
The outburst of Kevin distracted everyone, "see Archie I have your queen stuck in the corner, you can't move! I win!"
Betty and Veronica clapped and Kevin and Archie shook hands. Looking outside and then at the clock which read 3:46 pm, Betty suddenly got a worried feeling. It seemed unusual to her now, not being with Jughead and doing something absurd. The gang was talking about going to Pop's after this, but Betty was too distracted to listen to them.
"Betty you coming?" Archie asked, smiling at her being lost in thought.
Finally, Betty Cooper had the chance to turn them down, "not this time, I just remembered there's something I need to do!" She grabbed her backpack and rushed out of the room.
Her friends wondered what it was that Betty Cooper had to do, and they didn't know about it. Slowly she turned into a mystery, and that was unusual.
From her bad memory, Betty got to the old cinema drive in. She knew that Jughead would be there and she had to apologize for her behavior. Walking past the old cars, Betty finally got to the red pick-up that Jughead used to always sit in. She climbed in and noticed the boy sitting in the drivers seat. He didn't turn around to greet her.
"What are you doing here, Betty?" He didn't turn around as he addressed her.
She sighed, "I'm sorry okay, I couldn't do it. You know how they are-"
"No, I don't know. I don't know them. I know you." He finally turned around, his blue eyes filled with pain and hurt. Betty couldn't handle him in that state, and she hated that she caused it.
Moving a bit closer to him she tried to smile, "I'm really sorry Jughead."
He breathed out, "I forgive you. Now, tell me what really happened with that cheek of yours?" He couldn't stay mad at her. Not her.
Betty didn't want to talk about it, but this was Jughead, someone she could trust. Closing her eyes, she smiled, "my mom found out you were a real gentleman and walked me home."
"And-she-slapped you?" He asked, not wanting to say or imagine it.
She nodded her head, "you know it's okay, she just really wants me to be with Archie, the Coopers and the Andrews have always been friends. I was supposed to be with Archie even before I was born-"
He didn't let her finish her sentence, he couldn't hear anymore of the whole Andrews and Coopers talk. Taking her by the shoulders, Jughead pressed his lips against hers to stop her from talking. Her lips parted and he softly reattached his to hers, kissing her over and over. Betty tasted like strawberries, or at least her lip gloss did. When she flinched and pulled back he looked at her with concern as she grabbed her cheek.
"I'm sorry," he whispered and rubbed her shoulders.
Betty smiled, "it's not your fault, you weren't the one slapping me!"
He felt guilty nonetheless, he caused it. Closing his eyes, Jughead pulled back. He put his hand on the wheel and banged it with his fist. Realizing that she was scared by the sudden outburst, he smiled and turned to look at her. Innocent eyes. Like always.
"I know I'm no Archie Andrews, but would you maybe want to go out with me sometime?" He was a bit nervous, although he didn't think she'd say no.
Nodding her head with a smile on her face, Betty said, "yes, I'd love to." She wasn't allowed to see him, yes, but Betty didn't care. Her mother had too much control over her life, and Jughead was her only escape.
"Pop's tonight?" Jughead asked, searching her eyes for an answer.
Betty smiled, "Pop's tonight."
