Chapter IX - Date Night
"Who would have thought, Jughead Jones actually cares about impressing a girl."
He was nervous. Jughead's palms were sweating, something he definitely was not used to. Not that he had never gone out with a girl before, none of the girls were Betty Cooper. He didn't want to impress her because she was perfect, Jughead didn't even know why he wanted to impress her.
Fidgeting with his crown beanie on his head, Jughead looked at himself in the mirror for the final time. No. Something still looked off. He wanted to punch the reflection, but that was irrational. Brushing it off, he picked up his jean jacket and put it on. There were many things he could have done differently, but taking off his beanie, he refused to do. He opened the door to his trailer house and walked out, making sure that he would make it on time to Betty's house. Of course, he was not allowed to go up to it and knock, the Coopers would never let him take their daughter out. He would end up waiting two streets away until Betty came.
Stopping where he should, Jughead checked his wrist watch. He did own a phone, but he didn't have any friends, so what would he use it for anyway? Pacing around the street corner nervously, he peeked at Betty's street from time to time. The blonde walked out of her house and quickly rushed to the next street. Jughead was already waiting for her with a smile on his face.
Betty stopped, admiring the view of Jughead Jone's nervously smiling at her like a little boy who gave his crush a valentine's day card at school. She herself was already smiling and walked up closer to him, "you clean up well Mr. Jones," she said sarcastically, his outfit didn't change, aside from his t-shirt and jean jacket.
"Thanks, I tried as you can tell," he suddenly looked down, "I wish this could be normal. I'd knock on your front door, your mom would answer and your dad would give me a stern look as I offer you my arm and promise them I'll have you back by nine."
"I didn't think you were one for the cliche courting technique," she took him by the arm without him offering it.
Jughead started walking, "I'm not usually, it takes a special kind of person to bring this out of me," he smirked.
"So I'm a special kind of person?" Betty looked up at him.
Jughead didn't answer, he didn't know how. Of course, he had his charm and flirted with girls, but with Betty his confidence was either very strong or completely gone. Running his eyes across the street he tried to find a new topic, but Betty was already ahead of him.
"Where are you taking me after Pop's?" She forgot to ask.
Jughead didn't even think of taking her anywhere, he figured they'd just spend the time talking, "who says I'll take you somewhere after that?"
"Why Jughead, every boy knows that after a nice dinner you take a girl somewhere...for whatever reason," Betty tried to hint to him, but he was impossible.
He knew that he had to come up with something quick. Jughead was out of ideas and felt stupid for the first time, he smiled at Betty to conceal the fact that he was not prepared in the slightest.
When they neared Pop's Jughead jumped ahead and opened the door for her.
"Who would have thought, Jughead Jones actually cares about impressing a girl." Betty giggled at his behavior, although she didn't know him too well she still couldn't imagine him as the guy who takes out girls on proper dates. She wondered if there was a lot she didn't know about him, a lot she misjudged, as well as everyone else at their school. The second she walked into Pop's she turned around to bump into Jughead's chest. Laughing at her reaction, he took her by the shoulders and detached her from himself.
"What's wrong?" He asked, a smile still fresh on his face.
Betty shook her head, "nothing!" But it was too later, Jughead looked around and noticed Veronica Lodge and Archie Andrews as well as some other people gathered around in a booth. Understanding that she didn't want to be seen with her hurt him, but he didn't let it show. Jughead wasn't going to ruin this night.
"We can leave?" He offered, ready to open the door.
Suddenly, Betty took him by the hand and stopped him, "No," she turned around to look at her friends, "I need to face this."
Betty walked straight towards her friends table, Jughead followed behind her. Archie was the first to notice her and greeted her with a warm smile, but his expression started to change when he saw Jughead behind her. Veronica was her protective self and analyzed the whole situation.
"Betty, are you okay? Creep won't stop following you? Archiekins can beat him up for you, right?" Veronica smiled and turned to Archie who nodded.
Feeling uncomfortable from her best friends comment Betty shook her head, "no...Actually," she took Jughead by the hand and pulled him closer, "he's with me."
Not bothering to explain anything to them Betty continued to walk until she picked a booth for the both of them. Her heart was beating with wild panic, she just committed social suicide. What bothered her more was that she loved it. Pulling Jughead down to sit next to her she squeezed his hand a bit too tight.
"You sure you okay there, Betty?" He asked, holding up their intertwined fingers and the white around her knuckles.
Betty's cheeks flushed pink and she let go, "I'm so sorry."
"Don't be, you know I can take pain," he tried to sound daring. Jughead turned around and looked at Betty's friends, who were staring at them, "as much as I like your usual stalkers, your friends are making me uncomfortable."
Betty sighed, "all they know how to do is stare and judge. But, I am the new and improved Betty, remember?"
Jughead smirked, "you wanna live life on the edge right?"
She nodded.
"Step number two Betty Cooper, kiss me." He knew that she would never do that in front of her friends, she still had an excuse the next day and say that he forced her to come to Pop's with him. However, Betty did come to him for help, to make her the bad girl and show her the life on the edge. He was willing to do whatever to change her like he promised.
Hesitating, she glanced at her friends. A thought came rushing through her mind, would Archie be jealous? Looking into Jughead's eyes she realized that she didn't care if Archie would be jealous. With two hands on his cheeks, Betty pulled Jughead in and kissed his lips with her pink ones. They both closed their eyes, and Betty tried to enjoy every taste and sensation. Her friends were not on her mind anymore, the only thing that was were Jughead's surprisingly soft lips. She could smell his peppermint skin and feel his hands roaming around her sides. Parting her lips and pulling apart she looked at him. His eyes were still closed, a priceless expression on his face. Betty never thought she would make anyone like her, but Jughead was sure good at looking like he did.
When he finally opened his eyes she was looking at him with a small smile forming on her lips. Jughead put a lose strand of hair behind her ear, as if the night couldn't get anymore cliche. He wondered for a second how the strand got out of that perfect pony tale of hers.
"Now, don't look at them Betty, don't even let your mind wonder to them," he said as he applied his palm to her cheek, caressing it with his thumb.
A waiter walked up to them and Jughead turned to him, "I'll have fries, and a strawberry milkshake."
The waiter wrote it down, "and you?" He looked at Betty.
Turning to Jughead with a smile she answered, "I'll have the same."
She could hear them whispering, talking about her and Jughead. Betty tried hard to only think of the boy she was with and the wonderful night she was having. Suddenly Jughead took her hand, distracting her from her own head.
After Pop's and leaving her friends with mixed feelings, Betty found herself walking down the street with Jughead by her side, telling her of some story. She noticed that he loved doing that, telling stories. She watched his mouth move and eyes glow with excitement as he was describing some World War II soldier in his jet plane. The night was chilly and she moved in closer to him, listening to the sound of his voice walking her through the details of the soldiers life.
"Well, this is me," Betty looked at the street that lead her to her house.
Jughead stopped, releasing her hand. He rolled his eyes to himself, as if convincing himself of something, then kissed her on the cheek, "goodnight, Betty."
She was astonished. Smiling Betty could tell that he wanted to just kiss her like he would, and she wanted the exact same thing. Pulling him into a kiss she fulfilled both their wishes. Then she hugged him, letting her perfume take over his senses.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Jughead," she started walking down her street to her house.
Jughead smirked, "you just might make an honest man out of me, Betty."
She giggled to herself and skipped down her street.
