The heart of the world
"Ah, Shiro! Your ticket?" The Ticketmaster bellowed as I showed him my ticket. "Thank you! Have a wonderful day at school!" I smiled, happily, and took a seat on the edge of the ferry. Fastening the seat belt provided on the seat, I looked down below me. It was kind of difficult to see, but on really clear days you could see the core of the planet, blood red with magma. It was the only thing with enough gravity to keep the islands in place like they were, and not ramming in to the others. Today it was just clear enough you could see the magma, but not much else. It hadn't always been like this. My grandparents once told me that it used to be you could walk everywhere. That was a novel concept to me. Although connected by government funded ferries that would take you wherever you needed to go, the islands we inhabited were very isolated. I heard a rumble from down below. It seems that a plume had shot out of the core. It was fairly common nowadays, the pressure from underneath the core would cause the magma to shoot out, returning back to the core with a rumble. No one knew why it was a rumble, rather than a dull splash, but no one dared venture close enough to the core to find out. This rumble though... It wasn't stopping. The gravitational field shifted, causing our ferry to dip inwards toward the core...
I heard a voice...
It wasn't one of the other passengers, who were screaming as a result of being slowly pulled towards the core. It was a calmer voice, with a majestic presence but a worried tone. "Little one..." it said, taking it's merry sweet time to speak. "Who are you!?" I shouted aloud, though no one could hear me over the growing rumbling below. It was an insistent swelling. It sounded like half a million timpani rolling like thunder. The voice responded. "I am called Aria..." The core burst, dissolving into nothing, and revealed a large, spherical, ball. It, too, burst. Cracks spreading across it, light spreading in every direction, it exploded; taking out some of the other ferries, now visible as we got closer to the non-existent core. A large creature was revealed. It's scales, shining in the morning sun, were like pearls reflecting the sun's rays. Two wings, sprouting from it's back, unfurled, flapping with intense velocity. "What...?" I asked, panicked. "I am what you humans call a Dragon." The voice responded. I assumed that this was this being in front of us. I didn't know what to do, I was stunned. "B-but why and how are you talking to me!?" The sounds were beginning to die down, but it was taking a minute. That said, we were still falling. I felt a shock wave, and everything stopped. "Because, my little one," The 'Dragon' began. "You are the only hope for this world..." The creature's head slowly turned in my direction. "Wait, what-!?" I was completely caught off guard. Only hope?? What does that mean? "The magic keeping this world together, it's gravity, was created by me, but my soul will soon depart, and I will be unable to keep this world intact; I have chosen you as the next soul to take this body." I was very confused... Magic? Souls? I'm going to inhabit the body of the 'dragon'? "What do you mean?" I shouted, even more confused than I was before. "You will become the god of this world, watching over and protecting it. Your first task will be to help the people of this world, all you will have to do is will it, and it shall be done... I was once like you, a young schoolgirl who knew nothing of the world around her, but one day the world burst apart, and a dragon made me inhabit his body. It is strange at first, but it soon becomes natural. You do not have to inhabit the core of this planet, do as you wish..." The dragon burst into fractals as my vision blurred. I couldn't fish anything from the next thing. Everything was blank.
What a nice evening... I thought to myself as I lifted up my head from the ground. I swished my tail, feeling the grass around me. W-wait... tail? Turning my head around, I looked back. My white scales glistened in the sun, navy blue fins jutted up from my spine. My wings folded up against my stomach. What in the world? All the sudden, I gained my memories back from before I took this body. I had made this world whole again. I smiled softly as I remembered what had happened; and shifted in to a human body, the one I had before. After I did so, I heard a voice. "Hey! Shiro!" It was Kuro, a friend from school. He ran towards me and gave me a hug. "Where have you been? Your parents are really worried! I'm glad I found you..." He said, out of breath. "Really?" I said, smiling. "Let's go then." I pulled him along, running in to the sunset.
