Breakdown

Right now it's 10:00. Everyone in the house is asleep, apart from my brother and I.

I had emptied the contents of the hessian bag. The only object the bag contained was a dagger.

The dagger was like any other ordinary dagger, except the blade had peculiar symbols engraved into the metal.

"I'm beginning to think that Molly is doing something she shouldn't be messing with", Alex informed me, with a hint of concern in his voice.

"I agree".

"OK, so what do we know so far?", I questioned my brother, while looking at the lined page of information we had written down.

"OK, we know that your dreams are connected. We also know the name of the woman that went missing. She's probably dead if you're seeing her ghost", Alex said, putting the tip of the pen into his mouth.

"What about the piece of paper I had in my hand, the first time I had a dream?"

I got up and went over to my dresser, where I had hidden the peace of paper there, away from prying eyes.
I picked it up and read it loud enough that my brother could hear, but not too loud that everyone in the house could hear.

"She didn't kill your sister, cat lady did".
"What do you think it means?", my brother admitted, taking the piece of paper from my hand.

"Well...by what you overheard our parents say, it sounds like she was murdered by our aunt."

" The only thing we know about Aunt Dahlia is that she was definitely a cat lady but Molly is to..."

"Hm, well, there are definitely more than two people with an excessive amount of cats in this world. We don't know enough about Molly. Did she even know us before we came to the house?", my brother grunted out, the thought of Molly and Dahlia making him grumpy.

"I'm really not sure, but the book we found has the initials 'A.D.C' emblazoned on it. We do know that Molly's full name is 'Molly Rose McBree' ", I replied, getting confused with all the loose ends.

"Wait", Alex said, realising something I had not.

"Elise's boyfriend's name is Aidan and in the book the first Initial is 'A' ".

My eyes nearly popped out of my head, realising that we might be getting somewhere. " Aidan was the last person to see Elise before she went missing. But then again, there are many people in the world whose name starts with an 'A' ", I thought to myself.

"But we don't know his full name. Maybe if we can find out, we might find out who the book belongs to."

My brother nodded his head in agreement, but then he abruptly stood up.
"Whats wrong?" I questioned him.

"I think we need to look into the history of the house if we want to get more information about the book".

"OK, we'll go back to the library tomorrow and look up the history of the house; maybe there is a specific name for the creature that's haunting my dreams", I say, hoping that we will finally get answers.

"There will be no need to go to the library."

"Why?" I question my brother, in confusion.

"The internet should be up and running tomorrow, around one o'clock, maybe a bit after."

"Thank God", I reply, with relief, not wanting to walk all the way back to the library.

"OK, I think we're getting somewhere, but I advise we get some sleep, do you agree?" Alex queried me.

"I agree".
~~~
I snuck out into the hall, my bare feet cold against the hard wood floor of the dimly lit hallway.
I tiptoed up to the bathroom door, my pyjamas in my right hand, my left hand on the door handle. I was hesitant of going into the bathroom as memories flashed back into my mind of the faceless creature. I gently slapped myself across the face, forcing myself to open the bathroom door.
"Its just a door, Brook, JUST A DOOR", I said to myself.
I eventually gained enough courage to open the door. I stepped inside the bathroom, facing away from the mirror.
Once I got my pyjamas on, I turned to the sink, avoiding looking into the mirror. I started to brush my teeth and do my night routine when I heard the same disembodied voice as before whisper "look into the mirror" .
I freaked out and ran from the bathroom and back to my bedroom.
"I think you should wait until morning to do your teeth", I told my brother, trickles of sweat running down my forehead.
"Why?"
"I think you know why Alex", I told him in a dead tone.
"O-oh ye sorry", Alex replied, rubbing the back of his head.
I got into my bed and Alex got into his makeshift one.
"Good night".
"Good night".
I looked up at the ceiling, worried if anything else would happen. After a while, the ceiling began to darken as my eyes began to droop. Soon, I was asleep.
~~~
I felt the warmth of the sun hit against my pale skin. As I moved to sit up, I felt someone's hand upon my shoulder.

"Brook, dear, you must get up before it gets here", I heard a soothing voice say to me.

I stirred a bit more, but opened my eyes to be met with dark emerald green eyes, which were similar to mine.
"W-where am I?", I asked, as I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes.

"Oh dear, you have grown so much", the brunette said, while giving me a closed eye smile, tears running down her freckled face.

"If only I was there for you".
I looked at the girl in confusion.

As I looked around, I realised that I'm at the cemetery. It almost seemed calm. The trees were blowing in the wind. The birds chirped their little melodies. The warmth of the sun warmed me up from the cool breeze. The smell of flowers remained in the air, after the breeze had calmed down.

"Look...Brooklyn, I have so much to tell you but... so little time", the girl in front of me said, squeezing my hand.

"W-what do you need to tell me?"
"The pendant, you shouldn't have broken it."

"What do you mean?" I asked in confusion. It was all going so fast. I couldn't comprehend everything that was happening.

"Its too late now...the pendant was so important and was meant to protect you, but that isn't the case now."

"I'm sorry, Miss, but I'm so confused".
The sound of a bloodcurdling scream broke my trance on the brunette's captivating green eyes.

"OK, Brook, I don't have long, but NEVER listen to what it says. Please don't make the same mistake I did, please!" After I heard what she said, her grip on me tightened.

"I'm so sorry, Brook".
I didn't know what to say. Her eyes began to fill with tears, some already rolling down her cheeks. Her eyes began to go red, as a result of all the crying.

"I'm so sorry". Before I could say anything else, the faceless figure let out the same bloodcurdling scream, this time more demented than the last.

The last thing I heard before the creature ran at me was "I'm sorry, Brook". When I turned around, all I was met with was Elise's grave.

As I turned around, the demented, faceless creature had moved from its current position and was now hunched over, face to face with me. I couldn't move nor scream. I was stuck, like I was in a trance I couldn't wake up from. I began to feel excruciating pain in my thigh moving down to my kneecap, followed by the feeling of my pyjamas getting heavier and sticking to my skin. As I managed to evert my eyes from the creature, I looked down, horrified of what I saw. My once dull Ivory pyjamas were now soaked, dyed a deep red. The smell of metallic reached my nostrils, causing my face to pale.

"The closet", the guttural voice whispered into my ear. Before I could look up, I was engulfed into darkness.

As I looked around, the only thing I can see is a dim light in the distance. As I close in on it, I realised it was Elise, with a look of pain and sorrow in her dead eyes.
"Goodbye", she called out in a brittle voice, like she was going to cry. The darkness soon overwhelmed me making me fall into a slumber once again.
~~~
I sat, bolt upright, heaving, while clutching my chest, taking in deep breaths.
I looked around, my brother still sleeping peacefully. But I heard the dreaded noise of a closet creaking. I slowly look towards the closet, shaking. As quiet sobs escape my lips, my vision began to blur from the tears. An abnormally long, malnourished hand, had reached out of the closet, beckoning me to come closer.
My hands began to shake uncontrollably. I threw the blanket over my head. The smell of metallic overwhelmed me. Looking down at my pyjamas bottoms, I noticed that they were covered in dry blood. I touched the fabric. I began to feel a stinging feeling in my leg. As I carefully rolled up my bottoms, I noted four long gash marks going down from my thigh to my kneecap.
"My dream", I thought to myself, my hand covering my mouth. My tears flowed down my face uncontrollably.
I began to feel stuffy, so I carefully peeked over the blanket. The hand had disappeared and the closet door was completely closed.
I jumped off my bed and began to shake my brother rather violently.
"Wake up, please". I began to lose control again, tears rolling down my face.
"Huh,oh,is it mor-", my brother never finished his sentence as he saw the state I was in.
"Oh, my God, Brook, what happened?" my brother said, hugging me. I shook my head, returning my brother's hug.
"What happened to your leg?",  a worried Alex asked.
"I-I had another dream" I say, stuttering from all the crying.
"What happened?"
All I could say was "we shouldn't have broken Dahlia's pendant".
"What do you mean?"
"In my dream, I spoke to a woman. She said we shouldn't have broken the pendant", I told my brother as he was looking at my leg, a worried look on his face.
"The faceless creature...it did that".
"Lets clean you up".
~~~
After I had cleaned up, we hid the bloody sheets in between an array of different shirts and jumpers.

"Brook, Alex, I have some news to tell you", my mother said, clutching something in her hand.

Afterwards, my father came in, placing his hand around our mother.
"Last night...", my mother said, failing to finish her sentence. After one minute, she took a deep breath and finished what she was saying.
"Aunt Dahlia was found dead. Her body was discovered at 2:00 in the morning; muffled screaming was heard emanating from her cell".

My mother then handed me a picture.
"This was your Aunt Dahlia", my mother said, pulling a disgusted face when she mentioned her name.

The picture was of a woman who was wearing a long white hospital gown. Her emerald green eyes were dull, and her brown shoulder length hair was messy; it looked like she had run her hand through it one too many times.

Dahlia was the girl from my dream...
