Two shots (II):"The lights shines after a little rain".
It's been years. He is twenty-eight now. So, Gulnar must be twenty-four.
Almost twelve years.
Years since he last saw Gulnar. There wasn't anymore encounter, talks and information about her. After his family Zoya's family off, there was no information he could get.
He wished every time Zoya's father came to do drama that they have Gulnar with them. So, he could just look at her once. But, it never happened.
How long was he supposed to wait for her? Because this wait was killing him every day.
His brother and his wife were happily spending their lives now after all the hurdles. Sometimes he envies them, but mostly he was glad that their problems ended. His grandfather decided to cut Zoya's family off completely about two months ago and he didn't know how to feel anymore.
"I think we should look for a girl". His mother said, as they sit in the lounge, "Now that your elder brother is settled, it's time you get a wife too".
"I am not ready yet". He rejected immediately, "I need time".
"Time for what?" His mother inquired
"Just time to myself". He said, walking out of the room
"Bhai". Ahsan said, standing beside him, "What's wrong? Why are you so upset?"
He sighs, "Nothing. Just business".
"It doesn't look like business to me". Ahsan said, "If there is something I can help with, let me know".
"I will".
Their grandfather called the whole family into the lounge.
"I am planning to divide my property because I want to give Zoya's father, his share. Do you all agree to it?" His grandfather said
"I don't want you to divide mine". His father said, "I don't want our family to divide beside the one who is already gone".
"So, anyone else has an issue?" His grandfather asked as he takes the papers out, "Ahsan, I want you to deliver this to their doorstep and end everything. Can you do that?"
Ahsan nodded, taking the paper, "I will go there tomorrow. Is there anything you want me to say?"
His grandfather shakes his head, sadly, "There are no more words I can say to him".
The next day, he prepares for his work while Ahsan asks him to drop him off at Zoya's parent's place. He decided to wait for Ahsan since it shouldn't take that long.
Ahsan enters the house, after the servant opens the door when he heard shouting.
"I told you I am not interested in that houses men. Why can't you let me live?" Maya screamed, as she starts to move to the stairs and he hides behind the pillar
"You don't understand anything. This is for the best. They have so much money and because of your father's stupidity we lost everything". Her mother said angrily
"No. We lost everything because of what you both did to Zoya and what you made me do to her". Maya snapped, which earned her a slap
"Don't talk back to your mother. You will seduce their men even if you have to, but you will only marry in that house".
"I will run away if you force me, but I will not marry any men of that house". Maya said as she marches off
Ahsan decided it's best if he just leaves the papers to the servant because the atmosphere might just swallow him.
Danish looks at his brother as he drives the car to the office because he looks distracted.
"Is something wrong? Did they say something?" He asked, concerned
"Do you think we could have judge people wrongly?" Ahsan asked confused
"If you mean Zoya's family then no, we did not judge them wrong". He said, tightening his hand on the wheel as he remembers all the time he had to call his brother, "They are the worse".
"But, that was her father and stepmother doings". Ahsan argued, "What about Maya and Gul--".
"Don't take her name". He snapped and Ahsan shuts up, he took a deep breath, "She was not their family. She was not there anything. Do not include that innocent girl in Zoya's family filth".
"Why are you so angry about Gulnar? I haven't seen her in years. This reminds me, I didn't see her when I went to their house".
"Are you sure? Maybe she was somewhere and you didn't notice?"
"Could be. But, it didn't feel like someone else was there. Unless her aunt made her a servant and I can't possibly recognise her. She was a baby back then, she must be all grown up".
He clenches his jaw, "I just hope her aunt wasn't that bad".
"I won't even waste my hope on that woman. She isn't even considerate to her daughter".
He frowns, "What do you mean?"
"Do you think Maya learned to go after our brother by herself? No child can learn or do that on their own". Ahsan pauses, "Unless they are taught to do so".
"I don't want to believe anything. They did what they did to my brother's wife and I will never let them in our house or lives".
He works in his office for long hours when he heard a knock on his door. After granting the permission, his friend (Omar) walks in.
"What is the occasion? Your smile is not regular". He said smiling, as he leans in his chair
"I am getting married". Omar said and he grins, "I found a beautiful bride".
"Congratulations. When are you getting married?" He asked genuinely happy
"In a week. Everything happened so fast. I want you to join all the functions". Omar said, handing him to envelope, "I am sure we will enjoy" it.
"I will join, of course". He said, looking at the card, "Destination wedding?"
Omar shrugged, "It was my future wife's dream. So, we decided to go to northern areas".
"I have to pack my bags". He said thoughtfully, "And, pass my work on".
"You do that". Omar said, standing, "I have few things to prepare too. I will send you the detail of the hotel everyone will stay in".
"Perfect".
He knocks at his brother office, entering when he had permission. He found Zoya and his brother whose eyes were trained on her every movement as she reads something off her laptop.
He cleared his throat and his brother turns to him, "What is it?"
"My friend is getting married in a week". He started, nervously, "It's a destination wedding so I--".
"Just go, Danish. I will handle everything". His brother said, waving his hand
"Are you sure?" He asked worriedly
His brother raises his eyebrows, "Are you saying I am not capable enough?"
He chuckles, "No. Not that. The pressure will be doubled".
"As long as you can enjoy a week, I don't care". His brother said softly, "Go and have fun".
"Yes, sir".
He packs his bags, after informing his parents and the next two days he looks over the works that need him then he left.
He arrives at the hotel the next morning, it wasn't that long flight, but the delay did it. He was dying to lay down.
He asks the receptionist for the keys as he moves to the elevator. Just as he was about to enter, he found a girl, looking at her phone like her life depends on it.
"Dammit! These peoples". She curses and he looks around to find no one who heard her, then her eyes connected to him and he felt something passing through him, "Are you going to waste our time standing there?"
"N-No, I am sorry". He said stuttering as he enters the elevator, "I am-".
"I don't care".
He shuts his mouth as they exit on the same floor and move to the same door.
"This is my room". She said, tapping her feet on the ground impatiently
"But, I have the key to this door". He said frowning as he finds the same number on his keys, "There must be a mistake".
She rolls her eyes, "I can't believe this. I have an important meeting".
She pressing on the elevator buttons thousands of times in a minute. As soon as they enter the elevator, the silence follows.
Why does she look familiar? Her face was that of an angel and he felt the need to be near her. To continue to look at how innocent she looks beside when she opens her mouth, that is.
"Can you keep your eyes to yourself? I don't appreciate them on me". She snapped
He purses his lips, cursing himself for being rude, "I am sorry".
She exits the elevator on the ground floor as she moves to the receptionist informing her of the issue. It took about ten minutes to know that he was given the wrong keys. She didn't even wait for him this time as she took the elevator to her floor and he was on the same floor.
He went straight to bed because of the exhaustion and woke up when the doorbell wouldn't stop ringing. He groans, messing his hair, as he walks half-asleep to the door.
"If you are here to sleep, why did you travel so long for?" He heard her voice as he opens his eyes to find her in a beautiful green dress that brightens her eyes, "Hello?"
"The function is starting?" He asked confused
"It's been two hours already". She said, shaking her head, "The groom requested that I call you before you miss the whole thing".
He slammed the door at her face and curse himself when he realised what he did. He opens the door with a sheepishly smile to apologise when he find her glaring at him, so he closes the door at her face again.
He is an idiot.
Since, it was henna so everyone was in green dresses. He enters the venue trying to stay invisible especially from the woman he had embarrassed himself.
He met Omar and his wife as he hides in the corner, watching people enjoy. Once the music starts to irk his ear, almost making them bleed, he decided he needs fresh air. He carefully exits the hall, walking to the backside of the hotel. He sits on the bench as he looks at the pool where the children were playing.
"Sometimes I wish I don't have to go to function, but we get all the delicious food from it". He heard her voice and he almost went to hide, but she saw him, "Great".
"I am not even that bad". He said frowning
"That implies that you are bad at most part".
"I-No what?"
She shrugged, as she sits with a plate in her hand, filled with food, "You will miss the food if you don't leave now".
"I am not interested in food".
"Ok. You are blacklisted".
"From what?"
"People who I can't ever be in contact with".
"For what reason am I in this list of yours?"
"Number one on that list is the person who does not appreciate the different foods and just food in the world".
"That's stupid".
"You are stupid. Don't call my foodie instinct stupid".
He rolls his eyes as she looks through her phone and he curiously looks at her, "Who are you?"
She turns to him, "What do you mean?"
"Whose side are you on?"
"I am the bride's sister".
He frowns, "You are from Europe?"
"Why? I can't be from there?"
"No. No. You don't--".
"Yeah. No personal questions".
"Right. Sorry".
She continued to munch on the food and he looks at her. She looks beautiful. He remembers how Gulnar used to go crazy over food.
He chuckles.
"Why are you laughing?" She asked confused
"I just remember someone who loves foods like you".
"Can I be their friend. You are boring".
"You didn't even give me a chance. And, no, you can't be her friend".
"Why? Who is she?"
He sighs, "She is someone I know or maybe I don't anymore".
"That looks complicated. And, I don't like complicated things".
He smiles slightly, "You are weird".
"Thank you".
"Advia, why are you here?" He heard some girl yell at her, "Everyone is looking for you".
She groans, "All I wanted to do is eat my food peacefully".
She stomps her feet as she follows the girl inside and he chuckles. The night went away almost in a blur. Before he knows it, the next day arrived with responsibility.
The marriage.
He was asked to look over the arrangements and he tries to function his mind of the details he received last minute.
"If my sister saw these flowers, she might run away from her wedding". He heard her stressed voice as he turns to find her, standing in a distance with the flower man, "Are there no other flowers? We can take any flowers beside these yellow ones".
"What did yellow ever do to you?" He asked, as he stands in front of them
"Try living in an English country". She said sighing, "People always associate you with yellow or some other popping colour".
He makes a face, "Why did you live there then?"
She gives him a blank face, "Like I had a choice". She turns to the flowers, "No. Never. I will not have these flowers. I will just go buy some other".
He watches her march off as he asks the man to look at the arrangements as he follows behind her.
"Wait wait". He called her and she halts
"What is it?"
"Do you even know the ways and people around here?"
"Well, do you?"
"Not exactly. But, I am familiar with the place so I can help".
She looks at her watch, "Ok. We don't have much time".
He nodded, hailing a taxi since he didn't bring his car here.
"Don't you have to get ready?" He asked because she was in her jeans and white shirt with a black scarf
"I do". She said, nodding, "But, I choose to work outside because if I was in one room with my sister, I might lose my mind".
"Why?"
"She will complain, cry, laugh, complain, cry and so on". She said groaning, "Don't even remind me. She has a bad anxiety that she almost took a flight back. Her parents and I had to drag her here".
"Her parents? Aren't they yours?"
She clears her throat, "Yeah. I mean ours".
"We are here". The driver said
She nodded, as she exits the taxi, looking at the flowers. She finds all the colours pretty so she has no idea which one to buy.
"You can buy all of them". He suggested, watching her struggling
"Can we even take them all back?"
"It shouldn't be that hard".
"How about we look around when we are already out? I didn't get a chance to roam around and I will have to take a flight after the wedding".
He shrugged, "I don't mind".
She grins, "Let's go, partner".
She brought food all the way saying that she never tried them and she has to try them. He did warn her that she might get sick because of it, but she ignores his words.
He stops bothering her at one point because she genuinely looks happy while eating. She stops at a store, looking at something gleefully and it wasn't it as gleefully as she was while eating, this was different.
He moves forward, standing behind her to look at the henna parlour. He looks at her hands which didn't have any henna and he wonders why she didn't put any yesterday.
"I was too busy eating". She confessed, a little embarrassed, "Plus, it was either food or henna. I didn't want to sacrifice food, but..".
"But you didn't want to sacrifice henna, too". He said smiling, "Just go and get it now. We have hours before function".
"How will we work?" She asked confused
"I will work. You can get what you want".
"Are you sure?"
"Yes". He said confidently, "Go on".
"Ok. I will be back". She said smiling widely as she enters the parlour
He stands at the side of the shop, looking at the people passing by as he calls some worker from home so they can take the flowers and start the work.
He decided to go and confirm the flowers that she wanted so he left with the worker to the shop.
The rain starts to pour. She exits the shop, looking around for him, but she didn't find him. The henna didn't allow her to talk to anyone on call just yet. She sulks as she wonders if she was abandoned.
"What's with the face?" She heard his voice as he brings the umbrella over them, stopping the rain
"You are here". She said smiling as her heart did a flip
"Of course, madam. Apko liyay bagair wapis jata toh apne dost k sath sath apki family se bhi meri tabiyat saaf hoti". (If I went back without you, then along with my friend, your family will have my head)
She laughs, "That's true".
"Let's go?" He asked, "Or do you want to explore more?"
"As tempting as that sounds, no. I have to go back now".
He nodded. He places a larger side of the umbrella over her as they walk through the narrow path to the taxi. He moves to her left side when he saw a group of men looking at her in a bad manner. He glared at the men who shatter away as they pass by.
Once they arrive back at the hotel, he opens the door for her and she exits the taxi.
"You know the rain might have caused problems in arrangements?" He said wondering if she is upset about it
She nodded, smiling, "It's fine. The lights come after a little rain".
He smiles as they enter the elevator.
"Thank you". She said softly as she enters her room
His eyes widen as he looks at her entering the venue before the bride. He did know she is beautiful without a doubt, but she looks exceptionally beautiful.
He narrows his eyes when a man their age stops her way.
"Are you from the bride side?" The man asks her
"Why?"
"I just want to know".
"I don't want to tell you".
"Your accent tells me that you are not from here".
"Why do you care?" She snapped because she didn't like the way he looks at her
The man eyes darkened at her words and he steps forward as she steps back until someone places a hand on the man shoulder, turning him around.
She sighs when she found him.
"Do you have any problem?" He asked in a tone that even scares her
"N-No". The man said, running away
She chuckles, looking at him, "Thanks. You are here early?"
"I can say the same to you".
"Let's just say family drama".
"What kind?"
"The cousins wanting to take the chance to walk along with my sister so I said whatever and walked away".
"Your sister didn't mind?"
"She isn't my biggest fan". She said shrugging, "Look".
He looks at her hand that has a dark shade of henna, "Your husband will love you".
She rolls her eyes, "You believe in that?"
He laughs, "It's not about believing in it. It's just fun to have somethings like that in our culture".
She wrinkles her nose, "If my husband doesn't love me, I will have your head".
"Yes, Ma'am".
The next couple of hours went by in a hurry. He always found his eyes following her around as she jokes, teases and laughs with a few people. He saw how everyone was amazed by her and he can't even say he wasn't.
The next day was the reception.
He enters the venue early hoping to have a few words with her. But, the event started and he didn't find her anywhere. He wonders if she is sick or worse, hurt? The thoughts start occupying his mind so after a full debate he decided to speak to his friend.
"Where is your wife's sister?"
"Sister? What sister?" Omar said confused, "Oh, you mean her stepsister? She left".
"Left?" He asked, taken back
Omar nodded, "She was here for two days. I don't know the details, but that is what I know".
He nodded dejectedly. She could have told him. Or said goodbyes? She just left? And, wait, stepsister?
He left the place almost feeling hopeless. He shouldn't have stayed near her. She is just as dangerous as she looks.
He heard his phone ringing when he exits at the airport.
"Bhai". Ahsan yelled as he runs towards him, "You have to come with me".
"Why?"
He wasn't in the mood for anything.
"Come on, please". Ahsan said eagerly
"If it's something stupid, I will kill you".
"If it's the opposite, you will have to help me out". Ahsan said as they drive out
"I won't promise you anything".
"Please".
"Fine".
He sulks as he waits for whatever this is to end so he can go back to his boring life. He rolls his eyes when he remembers that she called him boring too.
Dammit! He is thinking about her again.
He exits at the restaurant which is famous around here. He frowns at his brother who eagerly asks him to go in. He rolls his eyes, entering inside as he looks around to find a woman. He almost fell, thinking it is her, but she flew back. Right?
His eyes narrow when Maya appears beside the woman, whispering something to her. Just as the woman turned, his eyes widen.
"Adiva?" He asked confused
"Bhai, she is not Adiva". Maya said and he was going to ask her to not speak, "She is your Gulnar".
His eyes widen as he registers those words.
His Gulnar? No way. She is Gulnar.
"Is this a joke?" He snapped at Maya who shrinks back
"Bhai, calm down so we can talk". Ahsan said, standing in front of Maya, "Are you ready to talk?"
"Yes".
He stands with Adiva/Gulnar at a table away from his brother and Maya.
"So?" He asked
"I had no idea you were Danish, I promise".
"No surprise there because you were too busy eating".
She blushes embarrassed, "Yeah. I don't know where to start".
"From the day you left our house".
Her heart stopped at his words. Our?
"Right. I left with them". She said sadly, "After a year, I was told that my aunt placed me in an overseas adoption and that some family decided to take me".
"What?" He shouted and everyone eyes turn to look at him and he apologises, "She did that?"
"Yes. She wanted money off me. Since, my parents had no properties she can't leech off that. She found a family who didn't have a child and they came for me".
"But you have a stepsister?"
"She is adopted too. After my adoption, they took in another girl".
"So, how was it?"
She sighs, "It was better than here. My aunt was not the best person to grow with. At least, my step-parents were better".
"I am glad to hear that".
"Did you look for me?"
"I did for about six months". He said smiling, "I used to ask my driver to drive to your place to see you. But, my parents found out and told me that I shouldn't go near their place".
"It's not a surprise. What they did to Zoya was cruel".
"What they did to you is no less". He said as anger builds in him, "Why did you come here?"
He wanted to ask if it was for him.
She clicks her tongue to her cheeks, "I might have stayed in contact with Maya. She was a good friend of mine when I was at your place and hers. Her mother was mean, she wasn't. So, I decided to see her and..."
"And what?"
"And I thought maybe if you remember me then I will meet you too".
"So, you remembered me all this time?"
"I can't possibly forget someone who helped me the most".
He smiles genuinely for the first time, "I didn't forget a thing about you. I should have known that there is only one person who can be crazy about food and henna".
She smiles, "I love them".
"I know. But why Adiva?"
She shrugged, "My stepmother wanted to name me something. So, she changed my first name to Adiva".
"You still go with Gulnar?"
"Only for the people who love me".
"Ok. It's final. I will call you Gulnar". He said determinedly
"What? I just said--".
"Gulnar". Maya said, looking scared and she turns to her, "I need to speak to you".
She nodded, excusing herself.
"What's wrong?" She asked confused, "Did your mother do something?"
"I think she is marrying me to Danish". Maya said panicking, "I promise I had no idea--".
"Wait. Relax". She said, trying to understand, "Your mother is marrying you to Danish?"
"Yes". Maya said stressed out
"My grandfather is in hospital". Danish dropped the next bomb
They all enter the hospital, worried about everything. Danish went straight to the room his grandfather was and everyone else followed.
"Danish, good that you are here". Maya's mother said, "We have decided to marry my daughter to you to mend our bond".
"What?" He asked shocked as his eyes immediately turn to her, "That is ridiculous. I will never do such a thing".
"I said the same thing". His grandfather said, "I will never marry you to anyone you don't want".
"We can mend our relationship-". Maya's mother started
"No. I said I will never marry in their house". Maya shouted, "Why are you doing this? I told you I will never do this".
"Shut up. You don't understand elders decisions". Maya's mother snapped
"Maybe. But, I understand that you are just greedy". Maya snapped which earn her a slap, "You can try all you want, I will never do this".
Maya runs out of the room as everyone turns to his grandfather.
"Leave". His grandfather said to Zoya's parents and they immediately left after a little more drama
She heard her phone ringing as she went out of the room.
He turns to look at his grandfather, "Are you ok?"
"It's wasn't that big of a deal. Her mother came home and started drama so I got upset which shot my BP". His grandfather explained, "They all just panicked for no reason".
He smiles, "As long as you are ok".
"I am. Who was that girl?" His grandfather inquired, "She looks familiar".
"That's Gulnar, you remember her?"
"She was a pretty child. How can I forget her? But, she looks different".
He explained the events that went by her life and everyone was shocked just how he was. He still can't make sense of how her aunt can be that heartless.
He sighs.
His grandfather was discharged after an hour and she went away saying something about some work. He can't even hold her back.
"Wait. Why did you call me to meet her?" He asked Ahsan who was busy munching at some snacks
Ahsan looks around, smiling tightly, "Um, cause you like her?"
"How do you know that?"
"You tried to kill me because I took her snacks by mistake".
"I didn't exactly try to kill you, Ahsan. All I said was that it was her snacks and to not eat them".
"Same thing. Taking food away from me is trying to kill me".
"I can't believe Baba was telling me that he will get you married to one of his colleague's daughter".
Ahsan stilled, "What?"
"Why do you look so pale? And, why did you stop eating?"
"I-I- nothing. I am not marrying anyone".
"By the way, when will you speak to everyone for her hand?"
"Possibly soon".
He did speak to everyone. He was nervous, but he had waited for this moment for years and he didn't even know if he will ever have this day.
His parents were the ones who spoke to her parents who adopted her. They agreed to meet at his place since they didn't have any home here and the hotel didn't seem like the best place.
He could feel his heart shaking as he wonders what will happen next. He didn't even ask her. Maybe he should have. What if she rejects him? They were kids back then, what if she likes someone?
"You are overreacting". Ahsan said, as he eats the snacks in his room
He slapped his head, "Try getting married to a woman you like and I will ask you".
Ahsan makes a face, "Yeah, right. As if anyone will let me marry a woman I like".
"You have a woman you like?"
Ahsan shrugged.
He heard everyone voice from downstairs and he pushes Ahsan to look at the environment who never came back to inform him.
"Good thing, I wasn't this nervous". Ahil said, standing beside him
"Don't lie. You freaked out right after saying that you will marry her".
"Sometimes I wonder why I didn't kill you when I had a chance". Ahil said, walking away, "Get down already".
He took a deep breath, as he was about to enter the lounge, the front door opens and in walks Zoya's parents, no Maya this time.
"How can you do this to me?" His aunt screamed at Gulnar who frowns
"What did I do?"
"You know Maya was interested in marrying Danish and you took that away".
She rolls her eyes, "Maya was never interested. You were. She made it clear to everyone in hospital".
Her aunt raises her hand before he could stop it, she holds her hand pushing it away.
"You shouldn't have sent me away if you wanted an obedient dog at your service". She snapped, "I have bear whatever you did to me for years. I am not going to let you walk over me again".
"You are just an ungrateful brat".
"Maybe. Still better than a greedy person who is not even loyal to her daughter".
Her aunt raises her hand again and this time he steps in having enough of this woman. The guilt of years of not being able to guard her and not being strong enough for her has eaten him alive.
"I think we are done". He said stern, "The man in question of this wedding is me. And, I will never marry a woman who hurt my sister (Zoya). You are delusional if you think any of us will ever think of Maya that way when we have seen how she truly is".
Ahsan purse his lips watching his brother speak about Maya. In a few more minutes, they went away cursing Gulnar.
She walks out of the house, feeling suffocated. Her aunt has always been a source of her pain. She didn't even know how she survived so far. She went to lean on a tree as she looks ahead to the beautiful garden.
"You are not crying this time". She heard his voice as he enters her vision, "I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing because I almost wore that cow costume again".
She chuckles, "I don't want to waste tears on her. She is just ridiculous".
"That she is". He agreed, "So, will you be my wife?"
"Isn't that just too direct?"
"12 saal intezar kia hai maine yeh sawaal pochny k liye, Gul. Rozana sochta tha k shayeed yeh waqt aye he nahi. Ab toh mazeed waqt zaya karna bewaqoofi ho gi". (I waited for 12 years to ask this question, Gul. I use to think that maybe I won't get this time. If I waste more time to ask you for marriage, that will be stupidity)
"Ap mujhe tub se pasand karty the?" (You liked me since then?)
He shakes his head, "Pasand nahi, Gul. Mai tum se tub se mohabbat karta tha. Woh toh choti umar thi toh mohabbat bhi kachi se thi lakn jaise jaise umar zayada hoyi toh aur pakki ho gayi". (Not like, Gul. I love you. When I was young my love was not strong enough. But when I grew I realised that my feelings are stronger towards you)
"Toh phir theek hai". She said, smiling, "Agar yeh barosa hai k yeh mohabbat saari umar sath rahy gi toh mujhe yeh shaadi manzoor hai". (Ok, then) (If you have faith that your love will stay alive for the rest of our lives, then I will marry you)
A month.
It's been a month, she was married to someone she had thought about in those long years away from home. She never thought that place was her home. It never felt like it.
All she wondered was what he was doing, how he was doing and if he remembers her. It was safe to say, he did remember her.
In this month, they have been happy. The loneliness and silence that took over him for losing her in the past twelve years vanished, he started being more joyful.
For her, she started to live carefree without expectations and worries. The past years that she spent in being perfect, she didn't have to do that anymore.
He holds her hand, sitting in front of her, as his eyes held admiration for her, "Come on. We have to get henna on your hands".
Her eyes lit up at the name of henna, "Yes. I am going to go".
She starts to move away when he holds her hand, turning her around to face him, "Aren't you just too happy to spend the whole night with the women in our house?"
She grins, nodding, "I have to spend awful nights with you for a month. It's a good change".
He rolls his eyes, "Go on. Before Zoya comes barging in with her husband to have my head".
She laughs, "Keep our snacks hidden from Ahsan".
"You bet".
He never stopped storing snacks in the same place where he used to store them. The stars on his ceiling, that she often used to look at were also there. He never replaced anything, that she once said she liked. Just like his heart that only beats for her.
"Begum, kis ka qatal karny ka erada kiya howa hai?" He said, as his eyes take in his wife who looks beyond beautiful (who are you thinking of killing?)
"Mai kisi ko kaise maar sakti hoon?" (How can I kill someone?)
"Apni adaa-o se". (With your beauty)
She rolls her eyes, opening her palm, "Bataein na banaein aur mujhe meri eidi dain". (Don't talk nonsense and give me my money)
"Begum, yeh choti eid nahi hai jo eidi mile gi". (Wife, this is not the eid where you get money)
"Choti ya bari, mujhe eidi chahiyeh. Nikale jaldi". (Even if it's not, I want my money. Give it to me)
"Yeh asoolo k khilaaf hai". (This is against the rules)
"Theek hai. Phir mai ja kar Ahsan se bolti hoon woh--". (Ok then. I will to ask Ahsan, he will--)
He pulls her closer to him, "Dayta hoon eidi yeh kia mere bhai k naam se blackmail kar rahi ho". He places a strand of her hair away, "Pehle jee bhar k dekhny toh do". (Ok I will give you money why are you blackmailing me with Ahsan's name?) (First let me look at you to my heart content)
She tilts her head with a smile, "Phir toh apne ap per bhi tax lagana ho ga". (I have to put tax on myself)
"I can pay that off".
She slaps his shoulder, "We are getting late because of you".
He moves back, taking out the envelope from his coat, "Here you go".
She grins, taking the envelope, "I am going to buy all the snacks in the market".
"I think we need a hidden room or something because my room is not enough".
"Maybe I should ask Ahsan and hides some in his room".
He makes a face, "Can you stop with Ahsan talks?"
They heard the door knock as they were called downstairs for breakfast.
"I guess, this is when we say, it is the time to say that our lives found their meanings?" She asked, taking his hand
"And, that we lived happily ever after".
"We did".
Just like that, she found a man that her heart agreed to and a man with who she feels comfortable sharing her life.
Just like he said.
That was them.
Gulnar and Danish.
The end.
