56.3:"The broken promises".
There is something wrong.
His mother can't be this happy for no reason. Since Roha left the house his mother is over the top. He decided to send her back and discussed it with his mother because he thought her family can comfort her in better ways. She has lived with them for years, and she should be comfortable at her place.
Right?
But, he didn't feel good when he felt the stiffness in her body when she was getting ready. She didn't even speak a word. She didn't even eat breakfast and by the way, she was bouncing nervously, it didn't feel right.
What is it this time?
He walks to his study as he locates his phone and dials her number a couple of times. The more she didn't answer the worse the fear grows inside him. Maybe he is overreacting? It can't be that bad. She has lived and was brought in that household, she can handle herself just fine.
He tries to hide his nerves when he heard his driver say that they have to leave so they can be on time. He tries to hide that he has asked to google a million times about what time it was. Because all he was waiting for was 8 PM. Why did he tell her that he will come that late? He should have said 5 or something.
He heard someone calling his name as he was about to sit in the car. He just wants to leave. Why is everyone annoying him?
"Ismail?" He heard her voice and his head snapped towards his ex-lover
"Safa?" He asked, confused, "Why are you here?"
Safa let out a laugh, "Is that the first question you want to ask?"
"I need to leave". He said hurriedly as he enters his car asking the driver to drive
She looks at the time and it is already 8:30 PM. She doesn't want to be nosy and call him to ask where he is and they don't even share any relationship, to begin with. What if he gets annoyed? She is not his responsibility.
"Did they send you here forever? Why do you have to be such a shame to us? Her mother cried just like how she has been for past hours, "Do you not understand that your parents are old? Can't you have mercy on us?"
"I didn't do anything".
Her mother grabs her hair, "Do you hear yourself? You sleep all day. You made a son argue with his mother. You don't do any household chores and you insulted your mother-in-law guests. Do I need to say more? I bet you don't even satisfy your husband".
She felt her breathing hitched. She can't be here anymore. She needs to leave. She pulls away from her mother after much difficulty as she runs out of the house. She wraps her hijab properly around her as she skips steps only to land on hard ground and her skin peeling off.
Ignoring the people and her pain she rushes to the taxi she sits in it. She manages to choke out the address to his house and she just hopes the world ends today so she doesn't have to face another day.
He anxiously taps his feet as he waits outside of her door. He rings the bell placing a smile on his face as he heard the door open.
"What are you doing here?" Her father asked rigidly and this isn't the first time he has been hostile to him
"I am here to take your daughter back home". He replied nonchalantly
"She left almost an hour ago". Her father spoke closing the door on his face when he heard the door opening again, "If you can't handle her then throw her in some ditch. Don't send her here".
He dials her number which says it's been switched off. He felt his heart hammering in his chest at the thought of potential danger she could have faced out there alone. Why did they let her leave?
It is all his fault. He shouldn't have stopped when Safa asked him to 'talk'. He should have left on time to reach her. He promised her. He broke the promise. She must be so mad at him.
He enters his house after knowing from his mother that she is back. He enters his room hurriedly as he tries to locate her movement. That's when he heard a snore. It's her. He knows. Because she snores whenever she sleeps.
She is already sleeping? She didn't even scream at him? Nor she asked questions? She just slept? Why?
The whole time he heard her sleeping only seem to make him anxious. He was eagerly waiting for her to be awake. He knows for a fact she won't be awake before noon. Does he have to wait that long with his thoughts? Should he just shake her and have her yell at him?
Gathering the courage he has in store he went towards her. He shakes her a couple of times before she finally groaned pushing his hands away.
"What do you want so early?" She asked hoarsely, "Let me sleep".
"I-I you don't have anything to say to me?"
She frowns, sitting on the couch, "What can I possibly have to say to you?"
"Are you mad at me? I can't tell because I can't see your eyes. So, tell me if you are".
"I am not mad at you. Why will I be?" She asked genuinely confused, "Are you ok? Why are you speaking like this?"
"Why are you not saying anything?" He asked frustrated
"I don't understand what you want from me".
"Just sleep". He said, standing from his place as he brush his finger through his hands, "I am taking you out later".
"Why?"
"What do you mean why? Do I need a reason?"
"I mean if there is a good enough reason I might join otherwise no thank you".
"I never asked".
"You should have".
"Just please?"
"Fine".
She shouldn't have dressed up. She looks out of place. Maybe she doesn't even look good enough. Everyone is glancing at them.
But he did dress up or so she thought. She has never seen him in public but these are definitely not his home style. And, damn, he looks good. Maybe she doesn't look good beside him.
As her self-esteem starts to went downhill she steps a little to the side just so people can't tell she is with him.
He frowns when he didn't feel her familiar warmth around him. It was something that was actually keeping him under control in public. He always freaks out whenever he is in public because at home he knows the order, but not in a public area. He is almost scared to lose her here.
"Roha?" He asked, halting as he moves his hand around to feel her familiar touch, "Where are you?"
"Who do you think you are?" Someone screamed at him and he immediately move his hand back
"I am sorry it was a mistake-". He started
"You men are the reason we can't be in public". The woman shouted and he knows people are watching
But can't they see the cane in his hands? It is pretty visible and he knows it is white so the colour can't go unseen.
"Who do you think you are to insult my husband that way?" She said as she push through the people
She stopped at a shop to look at the beautiful dress and she thought she can catch up to him only to find him gone. She has never felt such fear. She was worried sick until she heard the commotion.
"Husband? You woman defending such men--".
She jabs her finger at the woman's shoulder, "If you have eyes you should put them to use. My husband is blind and he doesn't know what he is touching or where he is walking. Don't even think about accusing him of something so bad or I will--".
She stepped forward when he wrapped his hands around her as he whispers in her ear, "Easy, Begum".
She struggles against him as she shouted, "No. Don't even think about leaving. Apologise to him right now".
"Leave it, Roha". He said trying to pull her away, "It's not worth it".
"What are you talking about?" She asked frustrated, "She was in wrong. If it was anyone else they would have the decency to apologise. She just went away like it was nothing".
"As I said not worth it".
"You are worth it". She shouted because she was losing her patience at his self-loathing, "You don't know because you are not allowing yourself to know just how amazing you are. These people are just the worse to walk among great people like you".
He moved his hand from her hand to her face, "So, why do you let them dictate you?"
"What?"
"Nothing. Just let's go". He said softly, "We didn't come here to ruin our mood because of strangers".
She huffed because if she sees that woman again, she is throwing a punch.
"Don't plan a murder, Begum". He said playfully as he holds her hand, "And don't leave me alone".
"I wasn't planning to".
He hopes so.
"Why are we in a mall?" She asked confused
"Because we have a party to attend".
"What party?"
"We have two which one do you want to know about?"
"None. Why do I have to go in?"
He tugged at her hand, "Because you are my wife".
She snickers, "Forced".
His smile vanishes at her words.
"Nevertheless my wife".
"Yeah. It doesn't make a difference. Forced and unhappy marriages are just as big of an issue as haraam relationships. They are just not talked about enough and glorified".
"The first party is at the orphanage I work for. They have a birthday party for some children".
She squeals, "We have to buy gifts. Tell me how old are they and their genders?"
"We were here to buy dresses".
She rolls her eyes, "I have enough dresses already. We will spend your money on gifts".
"But I want to buy you something".
"You don't have to waste your money".
"Roha--".
"Ismail?" She heard a woman say as she looks at her and her husband stiffen, "You must be his wife. I am Safa".
She heard that name before. She knows this woman. His lover.
"Oh, yes, I am".
"Your name?" Safa asked and she felt her heart squeeze
"I am Roha".
"It's good to meet you". Safa said and she saw the glance she send to her husband and at their hands
She immediately moves her hands away from his hand.
"Likewise".
"Why are you here now?" He asked sighing
"You didn't speak to me properly yesterday". Safa said and she stiffens
She should have known. God, she is so stupid. She should have known. Her heart screams in pain as she kept her face void of those emotions. The pain almost made her want to scream.
"I don't have anything more to say". He said trying to hold her hand but she move away, "Roha?"
"Um, you can talk now. I will go and buy the gifts. Just call me when you are done". She said hurriedly walking to the first shop she found
She can't cry. Not now. She can't cry in public.
"Why are you doing this?" He asked frustrated, "If you saw me with her you shouldn't have come to me. Do you think this is ok?"
"I need an answer".
"What answer?"
"Why did you leave me?"
He sighs, "What do you want me to say? I did what my mother wanted and your parents weren't keen on marrying you to a blind man".
"But I never said I didn't want to marry you".
"I have to find my wife, excuse me".
He dials her number asking her to come out.
"I am here". She said happily
He didn't even say anything as he holds her hand dragging her out of the place towards his car which she directed him to. Once they were inside the car he took a deep breath.
"Why?"
"Why what?"
"Why are you doing this? Why didn't you question me? Why didn't you scream at me yesterday? Why didn't you scream at me? Why didn't you fight? Why, Roha?"
She purses her lips, "Because I know my place and worth. I am not delusional".
"Really?"
"Yes. I know what I am and I am not someone who should question anyone. I don't have any rights".
She opens the door heading outside and she knows she looks like a mess now. Because even when she said she won't cry, she did. She cried out. She had to clean her face and make herself presentable at least.
He walks out trying to find her again which is super hard with people walking around him. He stands beside her.
"Roha-".
"Your husband abused you?" She heard someone say and she gasp, "You don't have to be scared of him".
She turns to find a frown appear on his face and the minute it all register the fury in his eyes was uncanny.
"Someone hit you?" He asked, stepping closer to her as he moved his hand towards her cheeks and he should have felt the difference in her cheeks because this one was swollen, "Who did this to you?"
He was the one planning murders now.
