45.3:"Measuring the worth".
She stumbles back as the people crowded around him praising him and she turned to no one in a blink of an eye.
She watches him taking steps towards her painting in the middle but before that his eyes turned to meet her and she feels her breathing knocking off.
"Take a deep breath". Hamza said standing beside her, "Don't look like you lost something".
She breath heavily turning to look at Hamza as she tries to calm herself down.
"D-Did you call him--". She started when she found Shah Nawaz standing in front of them
"I want to buy that masterpiece". Shah Nawaz said
"It isn't for sale". He said clenching his hands
Shah Nawaz smiles, "Is it not?. There is always a price for everything, I am sure you can sell that to me".
His eyes turned hard as he moves to stand in front of her hiding her away from Shah Nawaz vision, "Not everything has a price, something is too valuable to be sold".
Shah Nawaz laughs wholeheartedly and the dumb people follow behind him for no reason.
"I bought it once". Shah Nawaz said as his voice darkened
He chuckles, "That was when no one knows about how valuable it can be. A diamond takes time to be discovered in a coal mine".
"Are you sure your diamond is precious?". Shah Nawaz asked, "Because all I know is, it lost it's worth becoming nothing".
Her eyes met with her ex-husband who didn't look ashamed of anything he had put her through. She feels the burning inside of her body and this is the first time she wanted to truly scream at him.
"The more I see the more I feel like there will be no worth ever for this so-called diamond of yours". Shah Nawaz said straightening his expensive suit, "Keep it safe or someone might take it away".
Shah Nawaz walked out of the gallery and she stumbles hitting the wall behind her. She doesn't know it was all planned and she wasn't even looking forward to coming face to face with anyone from that house.
She raised her head looking at Hamza accusing, "Why did you do that?".
"I wanted to show you". He said calmly which only added to her annoyance
"Who gave you the right to interfere in my life?". She snapped as she pushed him aside running out of the gallery
She runs for a long time until she finally got tired of her running falling on the ground. She started to cry as the people just walk by her but then she saw a familiar pair of shoe in her sight.
She raised her head to find her ex-husband standing in front of her looking at her with disgust.
"I cannot believe you did everything just to become this miserable. I was hoping at least you will be more...". Shah Nawaz said looking at her over, "Stronger?. Since you acted like that before. If this is what you wanted to come down to, why did you do act up?".
"GET LOST". She screamed angrily bringing attention to them, "Get your disgusting face out of my sight".
She turned around starting to run when she finds Hamza standing in a distance looking at her shaking his head.
She looked back at Shah Nawaz as her fist clench, "You and your family took everything away from me yet you dare to speak down on me?".
"Haven't you heard that the population of women is increasing every single day?. What made you so sure that your leaving will even hurt a hair on our head?. There are hundreds of women who want to be in your place". Shah Nawaz said smirking
Her eyes turned hard, "Is that so?. A scum like your deserve to have a woman similar to you. I hope you find someone like that instead of ruining innocent women".
She turned around fiercely walking back in slower steps this time as he followed behind her quietly. She enters inside her bakery walking to wear her apparel standing on the counter as he stands in front of her looking down guilty.
"Will you speak to me now?". He asked softly and she sighs
"I don't want to hear from you at least for today". She said truthfully because a visit from her past has shaken her
He nodded understanding, "Please don't be mad at me for long. I will stay here and keep coming back here until you hear me".
"You don't know half of what my past is. How can you?". She asked hurt by his actions
"I am sorry". He said concerned, "I shouldn't have done that but I just- I know I had to do it for you to see clearly".
"See what?". She asked screaming, "Do you realise what you stirred?. He is not someone I can go against with or I would have done that already. I would have done that when I lost my--".
She falls on the ground as she feels the tightening in her chest. She chokes trying to grasp onto something until she found the sleeve of the jacket and she held onto it tightly.
She looks at him trying to understand what he was saying to her because every time she had an attack, she would be alone dealing with it all on her own so she never had anyone telling her anything.
"You are ok. You are going to be ok if you start to breathe like I am. Just follow me". He said gently that she feels him coaxing her into a world that is perfect with only the two of them in it
She leans back after taking a deep long breath moving her hand away from his jacket. She closes her eyes feeling the need to cry but was there any use of doing that.
"I might not know the intensity of the pain they have caused". He said and she looks at him, "But there is no way I am going to allow you to live in this pain. I have seen people doing and causing pain to an innocent soul to the point that they were close to dying. I am not watching it all over again".
She frowns, "Are you pitying me?".
He shakes his head with a smile, "I don't have to pity any woman who had fought a battle and is fighting one. I am simply supporting and rooting for you so I can see how much of an amazing woman you can be when you are given power".
She smiles, "You make me seem like a superwoman".
"I believe most women are super-women, they just don't know what they are capable of". He said shrugging, "My Ammi Jaan is one".
"Was she the one who suffered?". She asked curiously
He nodded, "She is my stepmother but my birth mother is the one who made her life miserable in front of my eyes while I was helpless".
She wanted to move forward and comfort him instead she takes out a small pastry forwarding it to him. He laughs shaking his head at her attics taking the sweet from her cutting it in half and giving it to her.
"I don't ever understand why all good women ended up with such faith?". He said sighing deeply, "All I know is they deserve the world how is the people don't see it?".
"You mean to say a world that those dark-hearted created?. A woman doesn't deserve anything as temporary as this world perhaps that's why our Lord put us through worse here to grant us the access to a world without any pain and the one that will last forever. This is nothing compared to what is prepared in the end for us and the monster like them". She said clenching her hands as she thinks maybe he went to heaven too
"Don't you want to rest today?". He said standing from his place stretching his body, "Do you want to meet my Ammi?".
"Why would I do that?". She asked shocked, "Do you randomly take women to meet your mother?. I would have a heart attack if my son brings woman every other day to meet me".
He laughs wholeheartedly and she observes closely at how his laughter adds youthfulness to him.
"My Ammi will send me off to Antarctica if I bring random women to my house". He said smiling, "Even when she is a soft-hearted woman, she still might hang my head on the dining table for a display to what she doesn't want in her house to happen".
She chuckles, "Sounds like an amazing woman to me".
"Oh, she is one. And she met you already in the women shelter". He said softly, "Don't you remember?".
She frowns as her mind registered the elderly woman, "That was her?".
He nodded, "She is concerned about you and constantly talks about you. I think if she sees you today looking like this, she might be at ease".
"Do I look that bad?". She asked brushing her hair to make the proper
He smiles beautifully, "You look like a wounded wolf who is more lethal to others".
"That's a good thing?". She asked confused
"For someone who is going to fight, yes". He said heading towards the door as he turned around to look at her, "You look beautiful today just like all the other just an extra for your efforts".
She smiles genuinely packing a few sweets to take with her. She closes the shop heading to his car conscious of the people observing her but when he waves his hand asking her to get in, she gets inside his car.
The drive remains silent as they headed towards his house and just as the car stops in front of a beautiful house, she knows it is something he fits in.
She enters inside following behind him to find an elderly couple waiting for her and his mother immediately embrace her in her arms.
"You look so beautiful". His mother praises making her cheeks pinkish
"Who is she?". They heard another voice say and they all turn to a young woman coming downstairs and into his father arms
"This is our guest, Roha". His mother said looking at her daughter, "This is our daughter and Hamza's sister".
She looks at Hamza because he never spoke about his sister to find him shrugging, "I never had a chance to speak about her".
"You didn't tell her about the most important person in your life and probably your first love at that". His sister said fake hurt
"You are not my first love". He said pushing past his sister to sit on the couch
"Then who is it?". His sister asked curiously then she looked at her and she looks back at her confused, "Is it--".
"Ammi". He said hurriedly, "She is my first love, now stop it".
As she watches them bickering back and forth while their parents continued to look at them with a fond smile that's when she realised that home she was taught about was real and rare. A home is not based on a woman who does everything but it is based on every single person in the house contributing to their best to make it a beautiful place to live in.
That's exactly when she felt the warmth of a house that everyone desires to live in and that was the first time she ever felt the desire of something else besides the living.
"Do you want to stay over?". His sister asked who had been speaking non-stop with her, "Please?".
She thought for a moment and it isn't like she likes staying at the shelter and maybe just maybe for one night, she can stay in this place to collect enough comfort to live on the rest of the days in.
So she stayed in with his sister in her room which was prettier than the whole house. She can see each of the family member adding their touches to her room.
"You like it?". His sister asked sitting beside her on the bed
She nodded meekly.
"It looks unrealistic". His sister said and she turns to her confused, "A home that is out of the fantasy with everything perfect".
She nodded as his sister continued, "Nothing comes without a price. There is something someone loses at the cost of others to be happy".
"He lost something". She stated knowing it right away
His sister nodded, "He is the only one who lost something".
They didn't speak after that while his sister slept beside her, she remained awake wanting to feel the comfort. She moves out of the room taking slow steps downstairs when something passes by her making her shriek but she mutes the sound when he came in front of her.
He chuckles, "You are easy to scare".
She really wanted to hit him over his head but refrained, "Stop scaring me".
"Are you scared of the ghost?". He asked enjoying every moment with her
She rolls her eyes, "I have seen the monster in human form and that is enough. I don't wish to see ghost now".
"Tsk tsk". He said shaking his head, "Here I thought you will say you are not".
She narrows her eyes at him, "If you scare me one more time-".
He grinned, "You will do what?".
"You don't want to know". She said huffing
"Look a ghost". He said as she screams hiding behind him while he laughed, "I did it. Now what?".
She stomped her feet angrily looking at him, "I will get back to you".
Before she could leave she turns around at the top stair looking back at him, "What did you wanted to show me today?".
He walks closer to her, "I wanted to show how those who have done you wrong hold their head high looking unapologetic and mighty wherever they go then why someone who went through all the suffering had to hold her head down?".
She nodded thoughtful then she narrow her eyes at him, "I am still getting back at you".
He laughs as he watches her leaving while he went back to his room not knowing what is going to follow him the next day.
"Why is my hair all blue?". He screamed looking at himself in the mirror
He exited the room ready to find the culprit when the culprit walked right to him and he stopped his words when she spoke.
She clenched her phone in her hand tightly pressing it to her chest as tears roll down her face, "Help me".
She said not pleading but with determination to ruining everything that ruined her.
